GERMAN-CANADIAN CENTRE FOR INNOVATION AND RESEARCH 4213 Enterprise Square 10230 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5J 4P6 Tel: 780-492-4287 Company Profiles - Cleantech/Environmental/Energy Alberta-Germany Collaboration Fund Symposium in Germany October 2012 Aquatera Utilities Inc. Aquatera Utilities Inc. is a regional provider of water, wastewater and solid waste services, and is a model of regional co-operation between three municipal shareholders, the City of Grande Prairie, the County of Grande Prairie and the Town of Sexsmith. They deliver waste, wastewater and solid waste services to more than 60,000 people in the Grande Prairie region. They provide a full range of services including operating, maintenance, engineering, and construction. Aquatera owns and operates a Level III Water Treatment Facility and a Level IV Water Distribution System. Aquatera has 32 Operators that hold water and wastewater certification with 16 Operators at Level III or higher. Most of their Operators hold dual certification in water and wastewater treatment or water distribution and wastewater collection. Since being formed in 2003 Aquatera has returned over $28 million to its shareholders through cash dividends and franchise fees. They wish to form working partnerships with German firms in the areas of water, wastewater, solid waste, or biotechnology. They are interested in German expertise in the area of solid waste management. Aquatera has recently approved the construction of a landfill gas to energy project capturing methane gas from their landfill to power their wastewater treatment facility. They are seeking a partner with technology in water treatment and reuse that is suitable across a broad spectrum of applications (municipal, mobile, industrial processed water). They are also very interested in technology that creates pure water, not simply the treatment of it. http://www.aquatera.ca/ Fluid Clarification Inc. Fluid Clarification is an Alberta based business that has been serving the needs of industry for over 20 years, providing separation expertise and technology to Oil Sands, Oil and Gas, Refining, Petro-chemical and a variety of other market segments. Their technologies are used to separate liquids and solids from gas and liquid streams, typically following bulk separation. They have an Permit to Practice, allowing them to practice engineering, as recognized by APEGA. They also have an externally audited Occupational Health and Safety program. Their clients include Suncor, Syncrude, Shell, ExxonMobil, Imperial Oil, Keyera, Atco, Encana, ConocoPhillips, Spectra, Husky, Devon, Cenovus, Talisman, and others. They are interested in new technology or processes to effect separation of contaminants from fluids, including water. http://www.fluidclarification.com/ Frac Rite Environmental Ltd. Frac Rite Environmental Ltd. is a Canadian service company specializing in environmental fracturing to clean-up sites in challenging subsurface environments. Frac Rite has developed a process using hydraulic fracturing technology modified from the petroleum industry (our FRAC RITE™ and BIO-FRAC™ processes) to remediate sites sustainably, without the need for excavation. Fractures create permeable pathways that expedite the recovery of contaminants using fewer extraction wells. Fractures are created by emplacing a sand slurry to produce multiple, interconnected “sheets” of permeable sand pathways in the subsurface. Frac Rite has further developed fracturing and injection technology to emplace various biological amendments to clean-up sites naturally. Treatment amendments, such as biodegradable plant based surfactants, nutrient solutions, or chemical oxidants, can be injected into fractures to convert contaminants into naturally occurring and harmless end products. http://www.fracrite.ca/ Great Northern Power Corporation Great Northern Power is a Calgary-based waste-heat-to-power (WH2P) system engineering and project developer. It is dedicated to producing clean electricity from large reciprocating engines, turbines, SAGD processes, and other sources of containable industrial heat, principally within the oil and gas industries. To that end, GNP has developed its patent-pending Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) based EXPANDER system. GNP is in the process of commissioning its first EXPANDER unit in Alberta. Commissioning is scheduled to be completed this autumn, with several projects in the pipeline following this milestone. GNP is interested in exploring waste heat recovery opportunities. http://www.greatnorthernpower.com Sustainable Energy Technologies Based in Calgary Alberta, Canada, Sustainable Energy Technologies trades under the symbol STG on the TSX Venture Exchange. Sustainable Energy has developed proprietary technologies which enable the conversion of extra low voltage generation and storage systems in grid interactive mode and applications at costs and efficiencies that are materially higher than any other technology in sight. The technologies are protected by more than 30 issued patented claims with further patents pending. Sustainable Energy has commercialized products for fuel cells and solar PV applications. The fuel cell application was developed in partnership with RWE AG which paid about $3M for a limited non-exclusive fuel cell license. For solar PV the products value lies mainly in enabling a “parallel” system architecture for grid interactive solar PV systems at costs which are comparable to conventional high voltage inverters. The company is now applying its innovative power conversion technology to emerging grid tied energy storage markets. Sustainable Energy's R&D focus is currently on grid tied energy storage applications for its patented inverter technology. http://www.sustainableenergy.com/ Western Hydrogen Limited Western Hydrogen Limited is a Canadian company, based in Calgary, Alberta dedicated to the development and commercialization of a new hydrogen manufacturing technology called Molten Salt Catalyzed Gasification (MSG). The Molten Salt Catalyzed Gasification process is projected to have significant economic and environmental advantages over current hydrogen manufacturing technologies including lower hydrogen supply costs, maximum feedstock flexibility and high pressure hydrogen production, leading to the complete elimination of greenhouse gas emissions for hydrogen production and electricity generation. Western Hydrogen Limited has recently patented a zero-carbon hydrogen production method using a renewable, biomass feedstock. The zero-carbon hydrogen can then be used to produce zero-carbon, clean electricity via fuel cells or be used as a fuel for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) being released in the next 2-4 years. Western Hydrogen Limited is interested in developing partnerships and in working towards commercializing MSG in Germany. http://www.westernhydrogen.com/
