SPIELREGELN
“IN DER KLASSE” German 205 is designed to give you practice in all four language skills (speaking,
comprehension, reading, and writing). We will read and discuss a number of modern texts in class as well as
other audio-visual materials (films, cdroms, websites, etc.)
“KONVERSATIONSGRUPPEN” Additional conversation sessions will be conducted by one of our German
teaching assistants. Times to be arranged. NOTE: In order to obtain maximum benefit from the course, thorough
preparation and active participation are essential. Regular attendance both of the class meetings and the
conversation sessions is required, since all material presented is relevant for the exams (familiarity with the
material is your responsibility; no more than two unexcused absences).
WWW Through the Blackboard website for this course (http://blackboard.amherst.edu/), there is a discussion
board where we will discuss various topics throughout the semester. Your active participation in these
discussions is essential; the regularity and frequency (and energy!) of your contributions to the discussion board
will form part of your grade (grammatical accuracy will NOT be graded here, so go for it!). There is also a
Kaleidoskop 7th edition Student Online Study Center website at
http://college.hmco.com/languages/german/moeller/kaleidoskop/7e/site_index.html that offers you web search
activities, grammar exercises, and additional information for each “Thema” in the book.
“GRAMMATIK” We will conduct a comprehensive review of German grammar. The assigned section from
Kaleidoskop should be prepared for each class meeting so that the focus of work in class can be on specific
problems. Grammar will be practiced in class rather than explained in great detail. If, however, you should not
understand a concept completely, please ask for an explanation in class. If you have problems, see Prof.
Gutzmann right away after class or during office hours. NOTE: Audio CDs with grammar drills from Kaleidoskop
are in the Media Center (level A of Frost Library), and online at

resources/course_media_resources/kaleidoskop_7ed You should listen to them DAILY. In addition to the 7th
edition Online Study Center website above, there is a 6th edition CDROM Computer Study Module on the

computers in the Media Center for your independent use to further your mastery of the class material. Do it
DAILY.
Written Homework: You will periodically be expected to do one segment of the grammar assignment in writing
[“Schriftlich”] and hand it in at the beginning of the next class hour. Please TYPE your written work,
TRIPLE SPACED, in 13 or 14 point font size, so Prof. Gutzmann can make corrections clearly.
Homework is due on the day indicated and will NOT be accepted later. This policy is designed to help you make
steady progress and to monitor your understanding of the material.
Classes will make little sense to you if you come unprepared, but if it should happen that you cannot do your
homework for some good reason, tell Prof. Gutzmann before class and she won’t call on you. BUT DO NOT SKIP
CLASS.
“PRÜFUNGEN” There will be a few surprise quizzes, two announced quizzes, and a final exam.
“AUFSÄTZE” You will be expected to hand in five short written compositions (approx. one double-spaced typed
page in length). The first draft will be returned to you with correction symbols, and you will have to rewrite it. Hand
in the corrected version together with the original version during the next class. This version will be graded.
Grammar assignments, written homework, and surprise quizzes will be graded with a check plus, check, or check
minus. Announced quizzes, compositions, and the final exam will receive a letter grade.
“ZEIG’ HER UND ERZÄHL” Each student will give a few short oral presentations (5 minutes) in class. These
(individual and group) presentations may be based on the reading selections or can be on a topic of your choice.
Make it fun and interesting; go wild!
You are required to attend at least one, if not both, of the following weekly social events. If for some reason you
can only attend one of them due to your class schedule, please let me know in advance:
Kaffeeklatsch: Every Tuesday at 9:00pm in Porter House (next to the Lord Jeff Inn). Come for an hour of food,
drink, fun, and German conversation.
German Table: Every Monday 11:45-1pm in the Mezzanine (upstairs) in Valentine. Come for lunch, jokes, and
German conversation!
GRADES
will be based on the following:

Some more tips and tricks on how to study a foreign language effectively:
Develop good study habits: the key to studying a foreign language successfully is consistent practice in small but
frequent doses. Studying daily (including weekends) for 50 minutes is far more effective than studying for 2 hours
every other day. Always spend some time reviewing carefully the material covered in class.
On days when your class meets, you should check your returned and corrected homework. Check your mistakes
and reread those parts where you had difficulties. Next, review everything that was covered in class, and only
then begin to tackle the new assignment.

The following day, you should briefly review again, and then prepare for the next class. Read the assigned
literature passages carefully.
Memorizing vocabulary should be an ongoing process. Write down new words you encounter, and add related
words. Working with flash cards is a great idea. Review now and then the stack of cards that contains those
words you think you know. Add related words. Practice learning words in short bursts several times during the day
instead of trying to do it in one long session.
Try to find a study partner. Set up a time during which you both will do your homework. Discussing your
assignments with a partner is more effective than quietly reading your book. You will remember much more if you
do it aloud and if you can correct and quiz each other.
Don’t be shy in class. Participate, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You can learn from your mistakes, and
you will have much more fun if you actively involve yourself in the class.
Frost Library has a wealth of current German newspapers and magazines, as well as films: make a point of
hanging out in the comfy chairs and reading a newspaper once in a while—you’ll look cool and your vocabulary
will increase exponentially. Almost all of the German films in Frost have English subtitles: bring your friends and
watch them together in one of the screening rooms on A level. Try watching a film and reading the subtitles the
first time through, and then watching it again WITHOUT reading the subtitles:-)
Make use of the wealth of language material you find online. Check out the sites listed through Frost Library
online and through the Amherst College German Department at
https://www.amherst.edu/academiclife/departments/german/resources/internet_resources. Listen to the audio
material daily, constantly! Have it running regularly on your computer while you’re doing something else (and also,
of course, while you’re paying attention to it!). Once again, the files are at:

How to read this syllabus:
During this semester we will cover the first five chapters of Kaleidoskop. (In German 10 in Spring Semester we
will cover the second five chapters of the same book.) The chapters are bolded below.
The first column indicates the date, and the beginning of a new chapter. The second column “Unterricht” tells you
what will be covered in class, and the third column “Hausaufgaben für die nächste Stunde” tells you your
homework assignment which will be due in the next class. The third column usually has two lines. The first line
refers to the text section that is in the first part of the book, the exercises afterwards refer to exercises that relate
to a given text or segment in this first part of the book. The second line usually refers to the grammar section of
the book (the second half of the book) and the exercises that go with it. All assignments are in the textbook unless
otherwise indicated (U = Übungsbuch). All written assignments are in italics.
