Survivors HOSS’S HERO Bobbi Grim by Bill Campbell Next year we will celebrate our 25th year at Hoss’s. In this issue, you will see the faces of some of the folks who have helped to make twenty-five years in the restaurant industry possible. “Whenever folks ask me what I feel is the reason for Hoss’s success, I always respond that it is our people.” Recently, Bobbi Grim, Assistant “I am totally convinced that we have some of the Manager at Martinsburg Hoss’s, most dedicated, hard working folks in the world performed the Heimlich maneuver working in our company.” on a gentleman who was choking on food. Fortunately, the gentleman When you look at the photos in this issue, you will be able to see some of the folks who have made Hoss’s their vocation. They have stuck with us through good times and bad. They are dedicated Hoss family members who enjoy their job and the folks they work with. They are with us for the long haul. Many of these folks did not start out to make Hoss’s their future and may be surprised at how quickly the years have gone and they are still with us. It was just a job; something they could do until something better came along. Somewhere along the line during the past ten or twenty years, though, they made a commitment to be a part of the success of Hoss’s. The theme for the Years-of-Service Party this year was “Survivor Celebration”. That’s exactly what these folks are — survivors. John Brown told me that he has been trying for years to come up with a more appropriate name for this event. He said that he thinks we inadvertently hit on it this year. I agree. In the future, you will see this event called the “Survivor Celebration” no matter what the theme turns out to be. Many thanks to all of those “survivors” who reached their ten and twenty year milestones this year. We appreciate your dedication and enjoyed celebrating with those of you who were able to attend. recovered and is doing fine. Thank you, Bobbi, for springing into action to help a guest in need! Dear Mr. Grim: I really do not know how to express so much thankfulness. A person by the name of Bobbi Grim, who is an employee at Hoss’s Family Steak House here in Martinsburg, WVA. saved my 46 year old only child’s (son) life at the restaurant. He choked on food. I ran to the register and asked another employee to get help. She went running to the kitchen and before I could blink my eyes, Bobbi was at the table with my son and perfomed the Heimlich procedure! What an act of God. She saved my son’s life. We celebrated the dedication of 60 honorees with a Survivor Themed Party… In keeping with the survivor theme, the field of 80 contestants was narrowed to one soul survivor with games of Master Mind, H20 Relay, All Tied Up, Blind Leading the Blind, Don’t Choquet, Bridging the Gap, Kamikaze, and the dreaded food challenge Survivor Smorgasbord. The competition came down to Steve Herrera from Erie and Mindy Wilmer from Martinsburg vying for the title in the final food competition. With Gourmet meals of dill pickles smothered in peanut butter, sardines, red fish with mustard, pickle juice, alfalfa spouts, hot habanera beef jerky, and baby food, Mindy Wilmer emerged as the sole survivor by outwitting, outlasting, and out playing all other contestants to take home the Survivor title and prize. All of our honorees were entered into a reverse drawing for a Pepsi-sponsored Trip to Las Vegas, Punta Cana, or Cancun, Mexico! Ironically, Steve Herrera from Erie was again in the final two for this prize drawing along with Joe Cool from Hanover. After a grueling fight in the survivor challenge, Steve came out on top with the victory in the reverse drawing for the Pepsi Trip! This statewide survey and a w a r d s program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Pennsylvania, benefiting the state’s economy, its workforce and businesses. The Best Places to Work in PA list is made up of 100 companies split into two groups: 50 medium-sized companies (25-250 employees) and 50 large-sized companies (251 or more employees). Hoss’s Steak and Sea House has been named one of the Best Places to Work in PA in the large category. Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the 100 Best Places to Work in PA. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. Nearly 20,000 Pennsylvania employees filled out the survey. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scored determined the top companies and the final ranking. We will find out our ranking among the 50 “large” organizations at the Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, November 27th. This is actually a very scary fact that we must prepare for. Think about not being able to retire and needing to work your entire life. Personally, I am looking forward to retirement, but I also realize that I will need about 80% of my current income for a comfortable retirement. Are you preparing for your retirement? Are you saving at the rate needed to live comfortably at retirement? Current projections show on average you will need about $1 million in savings. But with inflation and rising health costs, this number is sure to increase. My daughter a few years ago came to me asking for $2,000. One of her college professors told her that if she invested $2,000 now and invested that $2,000 aggressively, at retirement that $2,000 would have turned into $1 million dollars. Kind of cool, right? Basically, what this professor was trying to show was the power of compound interest — $2,000 invested for 45 years would become $1 million dollars. I don’t know if his math was correct, but it does show a very good point. I remember when I got into the 401K Plan. Money was so tight, but I thought that I would start with a 1% deduction. The difference that I saw in net pay was barely noticeable. Try this: invest 1% of your gross pay into the 401K and then every time you get a raise increase your deduction by at least another 1%. In 10 years, you will look at your balance and say, “WOW!” In 20 years, you will SMILE and realize what a smart person you were back then. For more information on Hoss’s 401K Plan, visit http://www.hosspeople.com/ openseason401K.html. Starting a deduction or increasing your current deduction is very easy: Enrolling for the first time?
