The Braunschweig University of Art is an internationally orientated art university with the right to grant
doctorates and the right of habilitation. With 1200
students in Fine Arts, Design, Aesthetics & Art History,
Media Studies as well as the educational courses of
study Performing Arts and ART.Education, the Braunschweig University of Art is one of the largest art
academies in Europe.
Over 30 excellently equipped studios and laboratories
provide the ideal working conditions for all intellectual, creative and artistic processes. They can be used
around the clock.
The public HBK library assists teaching, studying and
further education with its wide range of holdings in
the fields of art, design and media. Its annex encompassing of parts of the Mexican Pavilion from the
EXPO 2000 has become a landmark of the HBK.

Diploma: Fine Arts (painting, graphics/prints, sculpture/installation, photography, film/video, sound art
and spatial concepts).

Master of Education: Art, secondary school teaching;
Performing Arts, secondary school teaching
A high school leaving certificate qualifying for university entrance is required, furthermore the proof
of special artistic proficiency for the art and design
courses of study (entrance examination). For the diploma, the lack of school leaving certificate can be
offset by demonstrating extraordinary artistic aptitude
in the entrance examination.

The central buildings of the HBK Braunschweig are
located on Johannes-Selenka-Platz (see map). The
university additionally has further project and studio
spaces at its disposal in the city, including the studio
building on Blumenstraße as well as studio and institute building in the ARTmax on Frankfurter Straße.
Exhibitions by teachers and students
The HBK: Facts and Figures
Changing exhibitions by HBK professors are permanently on show in the university’s own gallery. Many
of the exhibitions come in collaboration with students.
The over 1000 m2 large raumLABOR on Hamburger
Straße as well as the Montagehalle (assembly shop)
on campus are available for student exhibitions. Because of its proximity to the centre of town, particularly the raumLABOR establishes a link to the cultural
offerings in the city of Braunschweig.
1,200 students → 49 full-time professors → 37 artistic
and academic associates → 83 lecturers → 83 technical and administrative employees → 7 trainees →
30 studios → nearly 29,000 m 2 total area → almost
18 million euros revenue.
Studios and laboratories (selection)
About 5000 m 2 of studio and laboratory space is
available to all HBK students for innovative and traditional techniques, for example for working with
wood, metal, plastic, paper and ceramic, for sculpture, model building, typography, layout as well as
various printing techniques. There is also a photo studio and laboratories for analogue and digital photography in addition to studios for film and video, sound
art, computer animation and computer-aided (industrial) design.
Students received expert assistance from highly qualified workshop supervisors.
