THEATRE OF VOICES
Theatre of Voices wurde 1990 von Paul Hillier gegründet und hat sich als eines der herausragenden
Vokalensembles etabliert. Das Repertoire reicht von Perotin, Dowland und Buxtehude bis zu einem
großen Spektrum zeitgenössischer Musik, mit Werken Arvo Pärt, Luciano Berio, Steve Reich, John
Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen und Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen. Das Ensemble führt seit Beginn
regelmäßig Werke von Arvo Pärt auf und übernimmt auch die Solistenpartien in Arvo Pärts Passio
und Miserere.
Das Ensemble war mehrfach zu Gast in der Carnegie Hall New York zuletzt mit Stockhausens
Stimmung sowie mit der Uraufführung von David Langs The Little Match Girl Passion, beim Edinburgh
International Festival, Barbican Centre London und in der Carnegie Hall und vor kurzem beim Hong
Kong Arts Festival und Bergen International Festival.
Für die Einspielung von The Little Match Girl Passion, erhielt Theatre of Voices 2010 den Grammy in
der Kategorie ‚Beste Darbietung eines Solistenensemble’. Nach der Veröffentlichung der Aufnahme
von Stockhausens Stimmung (Kopenhagener Version), wurde Theatre of Voices auf Wunsch des
Komponisten zu den Berliner Festspielen eingeladen. 2009 brachte das Ensemble die neue
Produktion The Afterlife of Li Jiantong der chinesischen Komponistin Liu Sola im Barbican Centre
London und an der Royal Opera in Kopenhagen zur Aufführung. 2013 debütierte das Ensemble mit
Luciano Berios Sinfonia mit dem Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto. Tourneen und Konzerte führten das
Ensemble nach Deutschland, Großbritannien, Belgien, Niederlande, Polen, Italien, Frankreich,
Dänemark, Schweden, USA, Mexiko und Australien.
Theatre of Voices arbeitet regelmäßig mit herausragenden Instrumentalisten zusammen. Dazu
zählen das Kronos Quartet, mit dem es Gavin Bryars The Stone Arch im Rahmen des Steve Reich
Festivals im Barbican Centre London zur Uraufführung brachte, sowie die London Sinfonietta, mit der
das Ensemble eine Reihe von Konzerten anlässlich des 80. Geburtstags des dänischen Komponisten
Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen aufführt.
Theatre of Voices spielte zahlreiche CDs ein, zuletzt wurden die von den Kritikern hoch gelobte
Aufnahmen Creator Spiritus (harmonia mundi) mit kammermusikalischen Werken von Arvo Pärt
sowie The Christmas Story (harmonia mundi) veröffentlicht. Bei harmonia mundi sind außerdem
David Langs The Little Match Girl Passion, Stockhausens Stimmung (Kopenhagen Version), Werke von
Luciano Berio und anderen zeitgenössischen Komponisten (Stories) sowie Cries of London mit
Werken englischer Komponisten der Renaissance erschienen. Für Dacapo Records arbeitet das
Ensemble an einer Buxtehude-Reihe, die erste von fünf CDs (Scandinavian Cantatas) ist 2010
erschienen. 2014 wurde eine CD mit Werken von Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgren veröffentlicht,
darunter das auf Dowlands berühmtes Lacrimae zurückgehende Werk Song.

Theatre of Voices was founded by its Artistic Director Paul Hillier in 1990 and is widely recognized as
one of Europe’s foremost vocal groups. Current projects include music ranging from Buxtehude to
many of today’s most eminent composers such as Luciano Berio, Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich, John Cage
and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen. The ensemble regularly performs music by Arvo Pärt and covers
the solo parts in Arvo Pärt’s Passio and Miserere.
The group regularly performs at Carnegie Hall New York, lately with Stockhausen’s Stimmung and
David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion which they have premiered in this hall, as well as at the
Edinburgh International Festival, Barbican London and recently at the Hong Kong Arts Festival and
Bergen International Festival.
Their recording of The Little Match Girl Passion was awarded the Grammy in 2010 in the category
‘Best Small Ensemble Performance’. Theatre of Voices’ 2007 recording of Stockhausen’s Stimmung
(Copenhagen Version) led to the invitation to open the 2008 Berliner Festspiele at the composer’s
own request. In 2009 the ensemble presented a new production by Chinese composer Liu Sola at the
Barbican Centre and at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen. In 2013 the ensemble performed Luciano
Berio’s Sinfonia with the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto. The past few years have included tours to
Germany, UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Italy, France, Sweden, Denmark, USA, Mexico and
Australia.
Theatre of Voices works with some of the finest instrumentalists. They are working regularly with the
Kronos Quartet (2009 premiere of Gavin Bryars’s “The Stone Arch” at Barbican Centre’s Steve Reich
Festival). They have been working with London Sinfonietta on a concert and recording series of music
by Danish composer Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen.
Theatre of Voices has recorded numerous CDs. The latest discs include the highly praised recording
Creator Spiritus (harmonia mundi) with chamber music works by Arvo Pärt and the recording of The
Christmas Story (harmonia mundi) based on the traditional Christmas service Nine Lessons and
Carols. For harmonia mundi the ensemble recorded David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion,
Stockhausen’s Stimmung, works by Luciano Berio and other contemporary composers (Stories) and
Cries of London (English renaissance music). On Dacapo-Records Theatre of Voices has released
Buxtehude’s Scandinavian Cantatas – the first in a series of five recordings. In 2014 a CD with pieces
by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen based on Dowland's Lacrimae was released by Dacapo records.
