The complete history of the oldest Thuringian
porcelain manufacturer
‘Volkstedt’ – the oldest Thuringian porcelain manufacturer,
which is still in operation today. Its founder Georg Heinrich
Macheleid reinvented porcelain in Thuringia. In 1760, he
was granted permission by Johann Friedrich, Prince of
Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, to establish a porcelain manufactory in Sitzendorf/Thuringia, Germany. Relocated to
Volkstedt in 1762, its products feature artistic representations of figures. The graceful appearance of the collector’s
items, which include groups of shepherds and female
dancers, is characterised by a great lightness, emotiveness and playful elegance.
This monograph presents for the first time the complete
history of the oldest Thuringian porcelain manufacturer,
which is still in operation. With regard to the eighteenth
century, the publication provides a virtually complete
coverage of figural porcelain and a selection of crockery. In
relation to the nineteenth century, it elucidates the manufacturer’s previously unexplained ownership situation and
its frequently changing names. This is followed by an overview of the modellers and models, as well as of the subsidiaries established in the twentieth century. The publication concludes with contemporary artists’ designs for
porcelain manufacturing in the twenty-first century.

Christoph Fritzsche created an inventory system that enables the clear labelling of the eighteenth-century Volkstedt
figures and therefore a definitive systemisation of all known
forms. Apart from the history of the company, there is a
comprehensive trademark index with regard to the manufacturer and its subsidiaries and an overview of the current
status of research.
First publication covering the entire company history of
the Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur, with a comprehensive index of eighteenth-century figures. A new
standard work on the subject of the history of porcelain in
Thuringia and Germany with approximately 350 illustrations.

Dr. Christoph Fritzsche, born in 1938 in Magdeburg, first
came in touch with Meissen tableware in his parents’ home.
Besides modest porcelain purchases, a collection of literature on porcelain came into being, which has extensively
grown over the years, while studying physics with a subsequent PhD in Physical Chemistry in Mainz.

During a tour of the ‘Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur’, belonging to the Seltmann group, in Volkstedt-Rudolstadt, the idea came up to write a book about this manufactory which is still producing today in Thuringia. In addition to

In addition to the work at the Wallis branch of Basel Chemie
in a branch in Wallis the figurine part of an exhibition catalogue about Fulda porcelain was created in collaboration
with the Museum Vonderau. Through contact with a Basel
collector a catalogue of this collection of Thuringian porcelain, and thus the interest in the Thuringian factories
emerged. Gradually, several works were published in the
journals ‘Weltkunst’ and ‘Keramos’.
