Lya Luft Multiple Choice Lya convokes the reader to an essential ritual: thinking of life’s multiple choices. With lucidity and clarity, she approaches the key-elements in our daily life: oldness and youth, the new dilemmas and taboos of sexuality, family changes, virtual communication, the borders between public and private, violence, drugs, ethics and affections. A beautiful essay that reflects the paths in our times. Dodô Azevedo On the road Again This is the story of Eduardo and Mariana, alter egos of writer Dodô Azevedo and photographer Luiza Leite, who decided to revisit the route American writer Jack Kerouac covered in the 1950s, leading to the classic On the Road. They aimed at finding what still lingered of beatnik and countercultural in 21st Century America. Inexperienced in the travelling field and with little money on their pockets, the task proved to be an adventure. He plunges into the individual’s building process, in an effort to measure what might, after all, remain from a time of plenitude and liberty. 2010 2011 Sergio Rodrigues Arthur Dapieve Elza Black Music João Silvério Trevisan Maria Valéria Rezende Livia Garcia-Roza The Flight of The Red Ibis Milamor The Scent King The Scent King follows Ruan Carlos, a poor countryside boy that goes to the capital to make fortune. Ruan produces cosmetics at the back of his store, notably a deodorant whose scent would have aphrodisiac effects. He becomes a great businessman in this field, known as the Scent King - but success comes at its price. The book depicts a pungent panel of the Brazilian reality today. Cintia Moscovich Claudia Tajes Why am i fat, mommy? Crazy for men Carlos Domingos Disguised Opportunities Gladis Brun Mine, Yours & Ours Luiz Eduardo Soares Marcelo Ferroni Elite Squad 2 Practical Guerrilla Warfare: a Manual Elite Squad 2 revisits themes and characters from Elite Squad (Objetiva, 2006) as well as from the homonymous film from 2007, fictionally narrating the contemporary story of Rio de Janeiro’s milícias, which are formed by policemen, act as the mob and elect politicians. Besides the Police backstage, the plot shows the ambiguous role loyalty plays in human acts and emotions, defying other values and beliefs. The book dialogues with the film Elite Squad 2 (simoultaneous lauching date October, 2010) and their interlocution is marked by a kaleidoscope of similarities and differences, echoes, references and surprising inversions. The name Che Guevara is not unfamiliar, but few know the details that led to his downfall in 1966 and 1967. Isolated in Tanzania and depressed with the recent guerrilla failure in the Congo, he gathers his most faithful followers to plot a new revolution. His goal is now Bolivia. Tired of the Cuban bureaucracy, he wants things done his way: no deals, no concessions, and with the unbeatable method he himself created. Practical Guerrilla Warfare is a work of fiction. It is a novel of ambition and madness based on true events — the last revolutionary expedition of Che Guevara —, but which subverts documented history, recreating characters and scenarios. It’s also a love story, and a pastiche, of the few who remained by the fighter’s side until his final moments. Beatriz Bracher Marina Colasanti Antonio My War of Theirs Benjamim is about to become a father, and discovers a family secret. He then decides to find out how everything happened from the ones involved. Three of them – his grandmother, Isabel; Haroldo, his grandfather’s friend; and Raul, his parents’ friend – will tell him their versions of the facts, and by gathering these pieces of memory, Benjamim will solve the puzzle of the history of his family. In this polyphonic narrative, Beatriz articulates general and private, individual and historical, building characters that are simultaneously unique and identifiable in their social context. Both protagonist and reader are moved listeners to the story. In this moving memoir whose reminiscences shift from dramatic to sweet, historical to emotive, Marina tells of WWII seen through the eyes of a child. The book opens with her parent’s wedding, travels to Africa with her family, the years in Italy during the War, and watches their arrival to Brazil. The author highlights the inner strength of the women around her, like her mother and her baby-sitter, who kept their heads up in the hardest circumstances. Her father, a happy and generous man, volunteered at the war. Marina tries to grasp the source of his passion, and this questioning and the consequences of the conflict in her family’s life are the substance with which she crafts this outstanding book. Luis Fernando Verissimo The Snakes Tony Bellotto Down In the Hole Tony Bellotto is a rock musician and writer – his new book, Down in the Hole, (lauching date October 2010), is in the intersection of Tony’s two main talents. Narrated in first person, the book tells the misadventures of Teo Zanquis, a decadent rocker in his fifties who took part of a one hit band in the 1980s. He tells of his frantic life on the road, in the golden times, and of his recent passion for a young Korean girl he met at a record shop in São Paulo. With extraordinary dialogues, the story is full of humour, sex, drugs, and rock’ n roll. There are many musical references from the 1980s and backwards, which may spark varied (and pleasant) doses of nostalgia. Flavio Carneiro The Championship André will not settle down professionally due to his uncontrollable compulsion to reading detective novels. Inspired by characters such as Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot, he decides to take a detective distance course which will send him into a bizarre investigation of a competition called “The Championship”. André goes through streets and bars in Rio de Janeiro, and is Flavio Carneiro’s homage to the city, as well as to mystery novels, and to his favourite authors – Rubem Fonseca, especially. The book’s protagonist, all in all, is the detective novel itself, object of passion of heroes and criminals. Letícia Wierzchowski The Getka Andrzej is a writer who wants to find a start to his new book after the end of his marriage. Locked in his office, trying to write, his memories take him to the time when he was a boy and spent the summers with the family in a desert beach. Their summers were shared with the Getka, and there was Lylia, the brave and beautiful youngest daughter of Josef and Danya Getka. Lylia, the childhood love Andrzej will never forget. Fantasy and reality, past and present, are conjugated and illuminated in this beautiful book, showing that life is capricious: the doors it opens may close with no previous warning, and no compass can ever make sure we will reach the destination of our dreams. Leticia Wierzchowski presents us the story of a man that loved a woman, and the story of a boy who discovers love. This book presents The Snakes, the protagonists of the comic strips Luiz Fernando Verissimo created in the 1970’s, during the Brazilian Dictatorship. The Snakes surprise, captivate, feel fear, but then decide to be strong and defy God, the football coach and the politicians - only to discover they are nothing after all. The Spies Still recovering from the weekend’s hangover, an employee of a small publishing house receives an envelope with the first pages of an unfinished confessions book written by someone called Ariadne, who promises to tell her story with a secret lover and then commit suicide. Tormented by romantic dreams, this frustrated bohemian decides to find out who Ariadne is and try to save her from her imminent death.
