The Lost Gutenbergs
The Discovery of 128 Unbound Original Cooper Square Gutenberg Bibles
2011 marks the 50th Anniversary of the printing of the Gutenberg Bible in North America.
The Cooper Square Gutenberg Bible facsimile was printed in the United States in 1961 and
limited to only 1000 copies. Of these, 128 copies were never sold and remained in storage
virtually forgotten and lost to the world for nearly half a century.
Appropriately named The Lost Gutenbergs, this remnant of the famous printing was discovered
in storage boxes as unbound printed sheets and purchased by W. Timothy Yancey and Michael L.
Chrisman of Bookbinders Workshop, Inc. Once the sheets were thoroughly inventoried, the
men were faced with the reality and responsibility of developing a proper binding. Drawing
from solid historical precedence and sound principles of conservation, Chrisman and Yancey
decided the protective armor encasing the masterwork should be equally impressive as the
printed text but must also be reflective of Gutenberg’s era. The Lost Gutenbergs provide a
unique platform and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to commemorate the skills of the master
craftsmen of the fifteenth century on such a grand scale.
This two-volume set, Number 48 of 128, has
been provided to The Gutenberg Museum in
honor of the 48 known copies of the Gutenberg
Bible throughout the world. This Cooper
Square/Bookbinders Workshop Edition has
unique documentation commemorating its
exhibition at the Gutenberg Museum and will be
sold at auction in late 2011. Proceeds from the
sale will be donated to the Gutenberg Museum
and used for the continued preservation of the
museum's original Gutenberg Bibles.

Die Entdeckung von 128 ungebundenen original Cooper Square- Gutenberg- Bibeln
Im Jahr 2011 jährt sich zum 50. Mal der Druck der Gutenberg- Bibel in Nordamerika. Das
Cooper Square-Faksimile der Gutenberg-Bibel wurde 1961 in den USA gedruckt und auf 1000
Exemplare begrenzt. 128 dieser Exemplare sind nie verkauft worden und waren fast ein halbes
Jahrhundert lang eingelagert, mehr oder weniger vergessen und für die Welt verloren.
Treffend als Die Verlorenen Gutenbergs bezeichnet, wurden diese Reste der berühmten Ausgabe
in Lagerkisten als ungebundene gedruckte Blätter entdeckt und von W. Timothy Yancey und
Michael L. Chrisman von Bookbinders Workshop, Inc. gekauft. Nach der gründlichen
Inventarisierung der Blätter sahen sich die Beiden mit der Realität und der Verantwortung
konfrontiert, eine angemessene Bindung zu entwickeln. Auf der Basis solider historischer
Vorbilder und fundierter Grundsätze der Erhaltung beschlossen die Herren Chrisman und
Yancey, dass der das Meisterwerk umgebende Schutzpanzer ebenso eindrucksvoll wie der
gedruckte Text sein sollte, aber auch auf die Epoche Gutenbergs Bezug nehmen musste.
Die Verlorenen Gutenbergs bieten eine einzigartige Plattform und die einmalige Gelegenheit, in
solch umfassenden Maße an das Können der Handwerksmeister des fünfzehnten Jahrhunderts
zu erinnern.
Dieses zweibändige Set, Nummer 48 von 128, wird
dem Gutenberg-Museum zu Ehren der 48 bekannten
Exemplare der Gutenberg-Bibel zur Verfügung gestellt.
Diese Cooper “Square/Bookbinders Workshop Ausgabe“
beinhaltet auch einmalige Dokumente anlässlich der
Ausstellung im Gutenberg-Museum und wird Ende
2011 versteigert werden. Der Erlös des Verkaufs geht
als Spende an das Gutenberg-Museum und wird für den
weiteren Erhalt der originalen Gutenberg-Bibeln des
Museums eingesetzt.
