ANESTHESIOLOGY GENERAL DESCRIPTION
ANESTHESIOLOGY
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
ANESTHESIOLOGY IS A COMPLEX MEDICAL SPECIALTY. IT DEALS WITH HUMAN
BEINGS OF HOURS TO ABOVE A CENTURY OF AGE. IT DEALS WITH PROCEDURE
LASTING MINUTES OR A DAY LONG…
THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ANESTHESIA PRACTICE RELATES TO THE UNIVERSAL
BIOMEDICINE KNOWLEDGE OF ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY, AS
WELL AS TO THE MOST RECENT GUIDELINE FOR THE BEST CLINICAL CARE.
NOTWITHSTANDING, THOSE UPDATES PERTAIN TO AMBULATORY CARE IN AS MUCH
AS INTENSIVE CARE.
THE ANESTHESIOLOGISTSD DEAL WITH SIMPLE PROCEDURES LIKE A VENIPUNCTURE
TO A ULTRASONOGRAPHY DIRECTED NERVOUS PLEXUS BLOCKADE. THEY STUDY
PROCEDURES WELL KNOWN AS A HERNIA REPAIRING AS WELL AS THOSE MORE
COMPLEX LIKE THE CARE OF A TRAUMA.
THE TECHNOLOGY HAS CONTRIBUTED A GREAT DEAL TO THIS SPECIALTY, FROM
BEST DEVICES TO SECURE A PATENT AIRWAY TO ULTRASONOGRAPHY TO LOCALIZE
ORGANS AND SYSTEMS PRECISELY.
TOPICS TO BE DEVELOPED:
 AIRWAY MANAGEMENT
 VOLEMIC REPLACEMENT
 MECHANICAL VENTILATION
 PERIOPERATIVE MONITORING
 ANESTHETICS MECHANISMS
 PERIOPERATIVE PAIN TREATMENT
ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, THE ANESTHESIOLOGY COURSE PROPOSES TO PRESENT
EXPERIENCES TO THOSE ATTENDING:
1. ANESTHESIA FOR EMERGENCE PROCEDURES AND TRAUMA (2 DAYS)
2. ANESTHESIA FOR CARDIAC PROCEDURES (2 DAYS)
3. ANESTHESIA FOR ONCOLOGIC PROCEDURES (2 DAYS)
4. ULTRASSONOGRAPY DIRECTED BLOCKADES FOR ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY (2
DAYS)
THESE EXPERIENCES WILL BE ALWAYS UNDER SUPERVISION OF A PROFESSOR
FROM THE DISCIPLINE OF ANESTHESIOLOGY, A SENIOR MEDICAL RESIDENT AND AN
EXPERIENCED ANESTHESIOLOGIST FROM THE “HOSPITAL DAS CLINICAS” (CLINICS
HOSPITAL) STAFF.
1
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. INTRODUCE THE PARTICIPANT TO THE SURGICAL CENTER ENVIRONMENT AND
PROVIDE CLEAR INSIGHTS ABOUT THE PRACTICE OF ANESTHESIOLOGY;
2. DEMONSTRATE ALL PROCEDURES RELATED TO THE PRACTICE OF
ANESTHESIOLOGY FOCUSING ON PATIENT SAFETY;
3. PRESENT TO PARTICIPANTS SOME SURGICAL SPECIALTIES AND THE
PHYSIOLOGIC & PHARMACOLOGIC CONSIDERATIONS BEHIND EACH
PROTOCOL;
4. PRESENT AND DISCUSS PRINCIPLES OF ANESTHESIA RECOVERY
TEACHING METHODS
1. FIRST WEEK, FIRST DAY: STUDENTS WILL TOUR THE INSTITUTIONS
(ORTOPEDIC, HEART AND CANCER INSTITUTES AND CENTRAL HOSPITAL).
2. FIRST WEEK AND SECOND WEEK, DURING TWO DAYS STUDENTS WILL BE
ALLOCATED IN FOUR ROTATIONAL GROUPS AND PARTICIPATE AS OBSERVERS
DURING MORNING ACTIVITIES IN THE SURGICAL THEATRES OF THE FOUR
INSTITUTIONS UNDER SUPERVISION. THESE SUPERVISED PRACTICES WITH A
FMUSP PROFESSOR, AN STAFF ANESTHESIOLOGIST AND A SENIOR RESIDENT
WILL ALLOW AT LEAST ONE COMPLETE PROCEDURE PER DAY.
3. STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO PREPARE A SHORT CASE REPORT FROM
ONE OF THE EXPERIENCED PROCEDURES TO BE PRESENTED IN A JOINT
DISCUSSION (FOURS SESSIONS).
4. SKILLS LABORATORY ON MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS AFTERNOON.
5. MORGUE – DISSECTION: THURSDAYS
