Quinta Quinta de Sant`Ana is a family run property
James and Ann Frost The family property has 9 hectares of vineyards. Quinta Quinta de Sant’Ana is a family run property situated in Gradil, near Mafra, at the heart of the ‘Estremadura’– the region that traditionally supplied Lisbon with fresh fruit, wine, vegetables, milk and meat. It is an historic estate, directly bordering the 1187-hectare ‘Tapada de Mafra’ – the former hunting estate of the Portuguese kings, today a wildlife park and nature reserve. Quinta de Sant’Ana is divided into 9 hectares of vineyards, 20 hectares of woodland and 12 hectares of orchards and paddocks. Winemaking is their principal activity. Wines Using the most modern equipment in the winery, resident oenologist António Mancanita shows a conservative approach to cellar work and has a sure touch and plenty of taste in the vinification and ageing of the wines. As for red wines, the property grows: Touriga Nacional, Aragonês, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Location By zoning the estate, they have identified different soil types in surprising proximity to one another. They have painstakingly matched each specific site with the appropriate rootstocks, varietals and clone. The first-class location of the vineyards offers ideal geological and microclimatic conditions: the low-lying, cooler locations provide perfect conditions for their whites, while the steeper, warmer southern slopes ripen their reds. Variation in the soil composition and climate lead to very different growth and ripening conditions for the vines and grapes. White wines consist of Fernão Pires, Alvarinho, Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. Climate With around 2750 hours of sunshine, Mafra gets more sun than French Burgundy. In summer, hot temperatures of 30ºC are typical, dropping to 16ºC at night. A unique micro climate of cool nights, misty mornings and hot afternoons is created by the proximity to the Atlantic coast, only 12kms away, and the Quinta’s position adjacent to the wooded hills of Mafra. Regular winds, particularly in summer, prevent the spread of spore-born plant diseases. Winters are generally mild, with temperatures varying between 20ºC and 0ºC with nightly ground frosts. Rainfall is high between November and February. QUINTA DE SANT’ANA 2010 ROSÉ Alcohol: 13.5% Grape Varieties: Touriga Nacional (35%), Aragonês (25%), Merlot (25%), Pinot Noir (15%).
