Center
This competitive grant-funded project was funded by the Town of Purcellville – Northern Virginia.
The goals of this study are to deliver a feasibility study and a business plan that will assess the viability
of the center. Given my expertise, I was invited to join a multidisciplinary team.
The deliverables of this project include: (1) A SWOT Analysis for Northern Virginia wine industry; (2)
a producers survey; (3) an assessment of the regional wine industry; (4) site assessment; (5) Feasibility
study; and (5) a business plan.
• Agritourism in Virginia: Financial Impact
This is a grant-funded research program that will analyze the overall financial feasibility of the
agritourism operations in Virginia.
The goals of this project include: (1) The creation of a comprehensive database that includes all
current agritourism operations in Virginia; (2) administering a survey to agritourism operation to
determine the financial condition and the factors affecting financial feasibility; (3) Identify, develop, and
disseminate tools and strategies to assist agritourism operators in increasing the number of visitors to
agritourism venues; determine the local/regional economic impact of the agritourism industry.
The deliverables of this program consist of: (1) several extension and peer-reviewed journal
publications; (2) an economic impact written report; (3) workshops and educational programs to train

• An Assessment of Web-based Marketing in the Virginia Wine Industry
A total of 184 Virginia wineries were analyzed in this study, and the quality of their Web sites was
measured based on four broad dimensions: (1) general features of a Web site; (2) wine tourism; (3)
direct marketing; and (4) educational.
The goals of this program include: (1) an assessment of each winery’s online marketing strategy; (2) the
identification of the Web site features that enhance the value of the business; (3) and the identification
of potential improvements to the winery’s current Web site.
The deliverables of this program consist of: (1) several extension and peer-reviewed journal
publications; (2) on-site visits to all interested wineries and the presentation of a customized written
report on the quality of their Web site.
• Growing the Future of Local Feedstock Production and Utilization for Smithfield Foods
This is a multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary initiative funded by Smithfield Foods with a focus on
grain production in the mid-Atlantic region.
The goals in this project include: (1) the assessment of current grain storage capacity and grain
transportation in Virginia; (2) the development of a spatial model that identifies possible bottlenecks
and opportunities in the regional grain distribution system; (3) the development of financial decision
support tools that assist producers in evaluating current to alternative crop rotations.
The deliverables of this program consist of: (1) several extension and peer-reviewed journal
publications; (2) cost budgets for grain producers that reflect current and alternative crop rotations for
target regions in Virginia; (3) breakeven cropping system model that computes value at which one
particular crop has net returns equal to another crop; (4) educational programs to train farmers in use
of the model to support strategic planning decisions.
