The project seeks to enhance the concepts of the urban plan, related to urban integration and activities. The desired efficiency in the performance of the building on operational and technical level, is crucial in the choices made regarding its internal organization and its constructive setup, which are reflected immediately in the comfort for the users within their spatial characteristics. The general design of the building sustains itself on two main ideas. The first is the internal organization of the spaces throughout the distributive scheme of the building, defining the ranking of the spaces - between the auditorium and the classrooms or the library and the offices of teachers and areas of research etc ... -- With full respect to the program initially provided. The second idea is that of maturation of a typology of organizational efficiency, in functional and modular terms regarding the spatial program. The functional rationalization, as well as compositional and constructive, is reflected in the compactness of the building and even in the treatment of its surroundings. .1991/02 NOVAS INSTALAÇÕES DO INSTITUTO SUPERIOR DE CIÊNCIAS SOCIAIS E POLÍTICAS - ISCSP Edifício de 16 000 m² integrado no Campus Universitário da Ajuda, em Lisboa. Construction completed. A fachada transparente e a própria organização interna do espaço modelam a luz e a relação visual com o exterior caraterizando o espaço público e privado. The new central edifice of the University, completes the lengthy building process of the University Campus, which has involved a number of well-known architects of the Oporto school of architects. The building spatially and functionally represents the closing act in the construction of the University Campus, completed by the Rectory and the Aula Magna and, spatially representing the centre of the entire Campus. The interior reflects the complexity of university life, transforming the edifice into a microcosm where a number of activities affecting the exterior coexist. This edifice reveals the coexistence between large and small spaces and volumes, and may be compared to a micro-city or a monastery, The corridors and cloisters, projected as “streets” or “squares” establish the hierarchy of the spaces themselves. The transparent façade and the internal organization of the space, model the light and the visual relationship with the exterior, characterizing the public and private space. This complexity, as complex and complementary as the activities of the University community that it houses, symbolizes the “Mother House” of the entire university. Effectively it constitutes the centre of all the diverse competences and services, within perfectly identifiable spaces, representing in a contemporary way the historical analogy of, for example, a convent. 1992/02 REITORIA DA UNIVERSIDADE DE AVEIRO Edifício com área total de 11 479 m², destinado à Reitoria, Assessorias, Órgãos de Coordenação, Actos Académicos, Administração e Gestão, Serviços Técnicos e de Apoio Geral. – 6.750.000, euros 1992/02 CHANCELLERY OF AVEIRO UNIVERSITY A building with a total area of 11,479 m², for the Chancellery, Consultancies, Coordination Bodies, Academic Acts, Administration and Management, Technical Departments and General Support Services. The Building C8 of the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon University, is set in a rather undefined context, in which the conditionings caused by the demands of the terrain and neighbouring buildings are added to the lack of definition at the planning level of this area of the University City of Lisbon. The new building takes on this reality and to a certain extent transforms it, introducing new meaning to the earlier context, characterizing the surrounding urban space more precisely as well as the relationship with the surrounding buildings and spaces. This project has led to a process of choices and options aimed at optimising three vectors: . The relationship of the edifice with the context of an indefinite, complex time and the demands of usable terrain in relation to the dimension of the programme itself. . The choice for this building was strongly influenced by the functional commitment to its programmatic contents in which the laboratory component predominates with all the complexity-flexibility necessary to underpin the various networks and installation systems. . Constructive economy and environmental control, translated into some compacting of the building, modular rationality of structural grids, the continuity of duct systems, but also in the control of surroundings and exterior bays or even in options for constructive systems and applied materials. 1993/99 EDIFÍCIO C8 DA FACULDADE DE CIÊNCIAS DA UNIVERSIDADE DE LISBOA Edifício para os Departamentos de Química e Física, no Campus Universitário da Faculdade de Ciências em Lisboa, 18 076 m². – 9.000.000 euros 1993/99 C8 BUILDING FOR THE FACULTY OF SCIENCES OF LISBON UNIVERSITY. Understanding the current configuration of the town of Alcobaça and its main square means understanding not only the genesis of its Cistercian Abbey but also the relationship of its creation within the territory, its development, interaction and even modification down through the centuries. The project seeks to liberate the relationship of complementarity between the town and the monastery, bringing the two closer together in the area surrounding the monument and proposing the concretization of that relationship in the town’s monumental main square. The design options made have always sought to accentuate the immanent character of the pre-existing elements in relation to the content of the new programme. This was achieved discreetly, placing the new support and service spaces on the sides, as well as the systems and networks necessary for their diverse functions. The new materials were chosen with a view to emphasising a certain hieratic despoilment that is subjacent in Cistercian architecture, where working with natural light was both systematic and all-important. It is indeed in the light, architecture’s raw material par excellence, and in its revealing / epiphanic quality that the bond between time and space resides. It is above all the light that introduces the sequentialness, the alternation, the diachronism of time. The truth is that the signs left by time have revealed, in that magnificent space, some of the coherences lost and even some of the intrusive processes it was subject to, which the project has dared to correct. MUSEUM OF THE MONASTERY OF ALCOBAÇA AND CONVERSION OF THE SURROUNDING AREA Remodelling of the North and South Naves of the Monastery of Alcobaça to establish cultural and museum spaces. Designing a plan to safeguard the surrounding areas of the Monastery. 2.075.507 euros + 5.366.726 euros 21 22 Reconversão de um Quarteirão no Chiado Conversion of a City Block in the Chiado Quarter of Lisbon O contexto urbano é fundamentalmente constituído por edifícios do seculo XIX, formando ruas com frentes contínuas e uniformes. The urban context is fundamentally formed by buildings from the XIX century, which provides a continuous and uniform street façade. A single public building, the Sacramento Church from 1772, makes a strong statement in the inside of the block, revealing the choir and the baroque tower. In the court there is also a small and intimate rectangular garden. The intervention involves eight buildings (belonging to an insurance company), as well as the court between them, integrating several aspects: - (Re)-introduction of a global functional programme obtained essentially by the reinforcement of the residential and business component, as well as the implementation of parking and office spaces. - Redesigning of the interior of the block, reorganizing the court and revealing its most significant elements: the church tower and the rectangular garden. - Recuperation of the “Pre-Pombal” passages, allowing the passage through the inside of the block. With the redefinition of the central court, a public space is established surrounding the rectangular garden, as well as an exterior area to the shopping area, permitting to enjoy the visual relation with the garden and the church tower, until now imperceptible. – 13.500.000 euros 1994/02 CONVERSION OF A CITY BLOCK IN THE CHIADO QUARTER OF LISBON Project for the partial remodelling of a city block in the Chiado quarter, including shopping areas, offices, housing and parking facilities, with a total area of 25,000 m². – 13.500.000 euros 23 24 Novas instalações do inst. The Superior Institute of Economics and Management (ISEG) has been installed in the Convent of the Inglesinhas for some 80 years and forms part of the urban scenery of this area of Lisbon. In planning to extend the ISEG installations, the upgrading of its “historic” installations had to be taken into consideration and, at the same time, the re-qualification of the entire urban perimeter. The proposal considers an urban solution for the implementation of the buildings, that would respect two basic principles: on the one hand to free up the entire area of ISEG for public use and circulation, introducing new pathways that will link the surrounding streets and levels and reduce the walking-distances, on the other hand opening the space between the buildings, by widening the visual links with Garden of the Francesinhas and extending this garden throughout the almost vertical embankment of the street of Rua Miguel Lupi. This opening to the city is accentuated further by the implantation of the Library building in an outstanding position highlighting its character as a public equipment for collective use. 13.500.000 euros + 4.953.398 euros 1990/06 LISBON SUPERIOR INSTITUTE OF ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT (ISEG) -LISBON Buildings with a total area of 16,770 m² in the grounds adjoining the current premises of the Convent of the Inglesinhas, including an area with 5,110 m² for the recovery of the Convent itself. Due to its function and the geographic position it occupies, this building assumes an exceptional presence in the relationship between the city of Lisbon and the River Tagus. It risks ritualizing the entrance to the city via the river, where its dominant verticality is suggestive of the theme of control that gave rise to it. That relationship aims at dominating the horizontal dimension, the dimension of the horizon and the sea, and of the water with which it is intimately connected, which is indeed the site of the activities to be controlled. It’s dominating vertical line also ritualizes the relationship between the land and the air – the vertical dimension of the land that rises up to the sky. A rooted element, the tower assertively joins the ranks of other symbolic constructions which, down through the centuries, have occupied the river front in Lisbon, from the mouth of the Tagus to the Vasco da Gama Bridge. Similar to these works, and indeed assuming its inheritance from them, the Traffic Control Tower dares to represent its time, leaving its mark on the river bank. Its nature will always be that of an earth element, an object that progressively dematerializes, born out of the solidity of the stone, clad in its copper covering, to be finished off in the lightness and transparency of the glass and, finally, the Hertzian waves that only the antennas understand. A new central area was planned along the platform of the railway canal next to the limits of the historical centre of Leuven, in which the new seat of the Government of the Province of Flemish Brabant is a point of reference. The main façade of the tower sets the point where the Circular Boulevard touches the railway canal, and, facing the tower, a square, reflecting the upright projection, connects with the city’s public space. The ground floor of the building, seven meters above the railway canal, reaches from the square to the garden at the end of the opposite side, where patios open to the railway in alternation with the body of the building. These patios, as topographical stabilizers, intersperse the several functional bodies of the building, linking and allowing the external dispersal of the programmatic areas. The border between the private and the public areas is intentionally airy, uses transparency and opacity as a changing background, in an interactive space which reacts to the adjoining landscape, to the sky, and to the fleeting movement of the trains. 35.163.499 euros 1998/03 SEAT OF THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT IN LEUVEN, BELGIUM Project for a building with an area of approximately 28,000 m², to house the Headquarters of the Provincial Government of Vlaams-Brabant, including assembly hall, auditorium, multipurpose hall, restaurant and library, administrative zones and public services, common services and technical support. The Faro Municipal Theatre shows as a compact and introverted volume next to the new entrance of the city. Its volume of stained stone stands on a black platform, cutting the point-of-contact from a generically dispersed and uncharacteristic territory. Parallel to the railway line, the only disciplining element of the uncontrolled expansion of the suburbs, the building offers its flank to the lagoon or the Faro River, trying to redeem architectural fragments from its surrounding, violently cut from its origin - to the Gardens of Ourives, an agricultural property from the end of the eighteenth century organized around the chapel of the Senhor do Bonfim, in a curious mixture of traditional and baroque architecture. The recovery of that heritage by the city of Faro allowed to host the Regional Orchestra of Faro, as well as the cultural office of the City so that, along with the new theatre, a new nucleus of cultural activities and performing arts was created in this part of the city. As pivotal of the new set, the building extends his podium / square to the exterior, allowing an area of high valence regarding outdoor recreational activities. The scale of its exterior - public space - is the same as of its interior. The relation exterior / interior is diluted by the opening of its foyer to the square, substituting only the sky by a roof. With an auditorium with about 800 seats and a scenic stage, the building may be interpreted as a "boite à merveilles" which hides itself to let shine the shows it offers. 2000/05 TEATRO MUNICIPAL DE FARO Projecto de construção do Teatro Municipal de Faro. - 6.000.000 euros 2000/05 FARO MUNICIPAL THEATRE Construction of a Municipal Theatre in Faro. - 6.000.000 euros 31 32 Planos urbanos Urban planning Plano de Pormenor da Cava de Viriato e Áreas Envolventes Detailed Planning of Cava de Viriato and Surrounding Areas Revisão do Plano de Pormenor da Ajuda Review of the Ajuda Detailed Planning Plano Pormenor da Cidade de Argel-Argélia Urban Requalification Project for the City of Algiers - Algeria 33 Plano de Pormenor da Cava de Viriato e Áreas Envolventes Detailed Planning of Cava de Viriato and Surrounding Areas 1999/...
