Os Olhares do Mediterrâneo - Cinema no feminino
promovem a exibição de filmes oriundos da bacia
mediterrânica, com o objectivo de estimular o
conhecimento das cinematografias provenientes
desta zona geográfica. O Festival pretende divulgar
o papel da mulher na produção cinematográfica,
dando visibilidade ao seu trabalho e promovendo
o intercâmbio com os profissionais do cinema em
Portugal.

O Festival é um projecto do grupo Olhares do Mediterrâneo
e do CRIA (Centro em Rede de Investigação em
Antropologia).

Todos os filmes são exibidos na sua versão original. Os
filmes estrangeiros são legendados em português e os
portugueses, sempre que possível, são legendados em
inglês.
Algumas das 15 sessões são seguidas por debates com
convidados; outras são apresentadas pelas realizadoras,
elementos da equipa criativa ou por protagonistas dos
filmes (assinaladas com um *). O programa pode sofrer
alterações por razões alheias à Organização.
Olhares do Mediterrâneo - Cinema no feminino
promotes the screening of films from the
Mediterranean Basin, with the aim of furthering
the knowledge of the cinematography from this
geographical area. The Festival aims to present
itself as a showcase of the role of women in film
production, giving visibility to their work and
stimulating exchanges with film professionals in
Portugal.
The Festival is a project of the group Olhares do
Mediterrâneo and CRIA (Centre for Research in
Anthropology).
All films are screened in their original version. Portuguese
films are subtitled in English, whenever possible, and
foreign films are subtitled in Portuguese.
Some of the 15 sessions will be followed by debates with
guests; other sessions will be presented by the directors or
members of the creative film crew (marked with an *). The
programme may change for reasons of force majeure.

Como se define este Mediterrâneo
nos olhares que trazemos até ao público?
Na 3ª edição de Olhares do Mediterrâneo - Cinema no feminino, temos novamente o prazer e a alegria de
receber filmes que reflectem uma visão plural do Mediterrâneo trazida até nós pela mão de realizadoras
e produtoras de diferentes países. Esta multiplicidade de olhares revela ecos de problemáticas e vivências
que nos são comuns mas também distantes, familiares mas simultaneamente estranhas; vivências e
desafios que, sendo transversais, são vivenciados de forma distinta consoante as latitudes e expressas
diferentemente em resultado do contexto de cada olhar.
Dada a actual intensificação dos fluxos populacionais que ligam as margens do Mediterrâneo, com desfechos
amiúde trágicos, cremos que é urgente conhecer a multiplicidade de formas de viver nas margens deste mar
que, sendo tão único, é tão heterogéneo.
Através de um conjunto de filmes e actividades paralelas, a programação dos Olhares do Mediterrâneo
de 2016 pretende continuar a questionar os estereótipos e preconceitos e dar a conhecer a pluralidade
das formas de viver e os diferentes olhares sobre o mundo que nos rodeia. O conhecimento é uma arma
poderosa, uma bagagem colectiva que nos permite compreender a diferença para melhor viver com as suas
múltiplas especificidades. Com isso em mente, continuamos empenhados em criar um espaço de partilha e
reflexão, um festival de olhares diferenciados que apele à criatividade e à consciencialização da igualdade na
diversidade.

Construir a programação de um festival é um desafio
interessante e gratificante
E porque este é um festival de exploração e conquista, é também um palco de experiências e aprendizagens.
Nesta edição, alargamos o âmbito dos nossos critérios de selecção, abrindo-o ao desempenho da mulher na
equipa criativa em filmes de ficção, documentário, animação ou experimental. Assim, temos alguns filmes
realizados por homens, mas onde uma mulher teve um papel-chave no argumento, produção, direcção de
fotografia ou montagem, ou mesmo na representação. Consideramos importante olhar esses lugares da
mulher na cinematografia produzida recentemente na bacia mediterrânica.
Este ano recebemos a submissão de mais do triplo de filmes do que na edição anterior. A programação
que apresentamos em 2016 vai ao encontro das preocupações e motivações reflectidas nas propostas que
recebemos porque pensamos que o Festival se deve moldar aos filmes que nos confiam.
Na transversalidade de imaginários que nos foram propostos, independentemente da origem geográfica
ou do género cinematográfico escolhido, nos filmes que seleccionamos surgem temas recorrentes como a
morte, o sofrimento, o suicídio, a crise económica, problemas de habitação, mas também a família, o amor, a
amizade e o envelhecimento. Porque um dos temas mais recorrentes é a problemática dos refugiados e das
migrações forçadas em muitas das suas vertentes, e pela importância social desta questão, definimos este
ano uma secção temática a ela especialmente dedicada a que chamámos Travessias.
Nesta 3ª edição do festival Olhares do Mediterrâneo – Cinema no feminino, procuramos trazer ao público
um vislumbre do que consideramos representativo dos filmes que os realizadores entenderam partilhar
connosco e assim divulgar os olhares que eles representam.

Composing the programme of a film festival
is an exciting and rewarding challenge
In the 3rd edition of Olhares do Mediterrâneo - Cinema no feminino, we again have the pleasure and the joy
of screening films that reflect a pluralistic view of the Mediterranean Basin brought to us by the hand of
filmmakers and producers from different countries.
Besides being an arena of exploration and conquest, this Festival is also a stage for experiments and learning.
In this edition, we decided to enlarge the scope of our selection criteria, expanding our interest in women’s
roles in the creative process of the making of fiction, documentary, animation or experimental productions
to other areas than that of director. As a result, some of the presented films were directed by a man, but
were nevertheless selected because of the relevant role played by a woman in the film crew, either as a
scriptwriter, a producer, a director of photography or an editor. We think this is important in getting a general
idea of the role women play in the total of the creative process of the recent film productions from the
Mediterranean Basin.
This multiplicity of perspectives reveals echoes of issues and experiences that we are familiar with and yet
are simultaneously alien to us; transversal experiences and challenges lived in unique ways depending on the
different latitudes and exceptionally expressed as a result of each contextual approach.
In comparison with the previous edition, the number of film submissions has tripled. It is indispensable to
shape the Festival’s programme in accordance with the films that are entrusted to us, as we aim to provide a
space for the concerns and motivations reflected in them.
Given the current intensification of population flows connecting the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, with
often tragic outcomes, we believe there is an urgent need to get to know the different lifestyles around the
Mediterranean which is unique but heterogeneous.
Regardless of the film genre, there are recurring themes such as death, suicide, the economic crisis, housing
problems, but also family, love, friendship and aging. Needless to say, one of the recurring themes is the
issue of refugees and forced migration in many of its dimensions. Given the social importance of this issue,
we have created a special section of the Festival - Travessias.
How is the Mediterranean defined
through the films we bring to the audience?
Expressed in a set of films and parallel activities, this year’s programme of Olhares do Mediterrâneo
continues to challenge the stereotypes and prejudices and to showcase the diverse ways of living and the
different perspectives on the world around us. Knowledge is a powerful weapon; a collective baggage that
allows us to better understand the difference and the multiplicity of lifestyles. With that in mind, we remain
committed to creating a space for sharing and reflection, a festival of differentiated approaches that will
appeal to creativity and raise awareness of the equality of diversity.

Nesta edição, alterámos o formato do Festival e introduzimos um espaço privilegiado para temas que
consideramos importante debater de uma forma mais extensa. Consolidando uma preocupação e um
interesse que tem estado patente desde a 1ª edição do Festival, tanto em filmes como em debates, nascem
as Travessias. Este é um espaço multifacetado, que combina a exibição de filmes com uma série de
actividades associadas à questão dos refugiados e das migrações forçadas. Nesta secção, teremos ainda
uma exposição de fotografia e o acolhimentp da SOS Méditerranée, uma ONG que se dedica a tentar impedir
que pessoas morram neste mar, ao mesmo tempo tão generoso e tão perigoso. Os filmes das Travessias
estarão em competição para o prémio com o mesmo nome, numa iniciativa que pretende chamar a atenção
para a importância e a urgência de nos posicionarmos como parte duma futura solução para este problema.
Muitas ondas teremos ainda de transpor até chegar a bom porto…
In this edition, we have changed the format of the Festival and created a special, separate place for issues
which in our opinion deserve to be discussed more extensively. Thus, as an enhancement of a concern and an
interest that has been manifest since the 1st edition of the Festival, both in films and in debates, Travessias
[Crossings] is born. This is a multifaceted space, combining film screenings with a series of activities related
to the issues of refugees and forced migration. Among its activities, Travessias also features a photography
exhibition and the very special hosting of SOS Méditerranée, an NGO dedicated to try to prevent people
from drowning in this sea which is simultaneously so generous and so dangerous. The films presented in
Travessias will compete for its namesake prize, an initiative that aims to draw attention to the urgent need to
adopt a position as part of a future solution to this problem.
We all have yet to navigate many waves before we might reach a safe harbour…

É também vice-presidente da

Tomás Baltazar tem uma
pós-graduação em Edição de
Cinema e Televisão e é licenciado
em Som e Imagem. É realizador e

prémios. Colabora desde 2014 com o
Doclisboa, como membro da equipa
de programação da competição
internacional do Festival.
Nasceu em Lisboa em 1970.
É licenciado em Arquitectura pela
Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.
É vereador do Pelouro dos Direitos
Sociais da Câmara Municipal de
Lisboa, com competências nas áreas
de Cidadania, Direitos Humanos,
entre outros. Preside ao Conselho
Local de Acção Social (Lisboa) e é o
representante da cidade de Lisboa na
União das Cidades Capitais de Língua
Portuguesa (UCCLA) na área dos
Direitos Sociais.

Adriano Smaldone, born in Italy, lives
in Lisbon, where he works. His main
occupation is film programming,
having a broad experience with
several film festivals and cultural
events, among them DocLisboa and
8 1⁄2 Festa do Cinema Italiano. He is
also vice-president of the Il Sorpasso
Association, where he is responsible
for the programming and film
distribution.

Tomás Baltazar has a post-graduation
in Television and Cinema Editing and
is graduated in Sound and Image. He
is a director and an editor and the
films he has worked on have won
several prizes, both in Portugal and
abroad. Since 2014, he works as a
programmer for the International
Competition of DocLisboa.
Born in Lisbon in 1970. Graduated in
Architecture. Municipal Councilman
for Social Rights, presiding in areas
such as Citizenship, Human Rights,
among others. Chairman of the city’s
Social Action’s Local Council and
representative of Lisbon in the Union
of Portuguese Speaking City Capitals
(UCCLA) in the area of Social Rights.

programadora de curtas metragens
do festival IndieLisboa e directora

a internacionalização do cinema

Graduated in Social Anthropology,
Margarida Moz is both University
teacher and programmer at
IndieLisboa. She is also the CEO
of Portugal Film, an agency that
promotes Portuguese cinema
worldwide.
Raquel Freire nasceu no Porto. É
cineasta, escritora, argumentista,
produtora, com filmes seleccionados
para os Festivais de Veneza, Turim,
Montreal, entre outros, com estreia
nas salas de cinema em Portugal e em
França e exibidos em televisão. Está
a filmar dois documentários sobre as
lideranças femininas e activistas na
política, e a trans-identidade nacional.
Prepara ainda uma longa de ficção.
Raquel Freire was born in Oporto. She
is a filmmaker, writer, scriptwriter,
producer, and her films have been
screened at Venice Festival, Turim,
Montreal, among others; they had
also theatrical release in Portugal and
France, and on TV. She is filming two
documentaries about the feminine
leaders and political activists and the
national trans-identity, as well as
preparing a long-feature fiction film.

Tudo começou com uma fotografia tirada em Lisboa, em
1974, depois da Revolução. A Caça Revoluções explora a
relação entre duas gerações, dois tempos e duas lutas
diferentes. É a Revolução de Abril a inspirar as gerações
que apenas a conhecem através de relatos dos que a
viveram e das fotografias de que nos apropriamos para a
tornar nossa.
A vida de três artistas sírios no Líbano enquanto actores de
dobragem nas telenovelas turcas que invadiram o mundo
árabe. De onde vêm e para onde continuarão o seu exílio
com todas as suas contradições e as suas diferenças
culturais e políticas? Três histórias relacionadas com a arte,
a música, a migração forçada, a nostalgia e a incerteza do
regresso à pátria.
It all started with a picture taken in 1974 in Lisbon, just after
the Portuguese Revolution. The Revolution Hunter explores
the relationship between two generations, two different
times and two different fights. As if we could transform a
photograph by drawing on it...
The life of three Syrian artists living in Lebanon, through
their work in the dubbing of Turkish soaps that has invaded
the Arab world. Where do they come from and to where
they shall continue their exile with all its contradictions
and their cultural and political differences? Three stories,
related to art, music, displacement, nostalgia, and the
uncertainty of return to motherland.

protecção jurídica de menores, resta-lhes enfrentar o seu
futuro como adultos maduros.
Quando o Coelho e o Texugo se unem, o Cavalo e o Burro
têm de desconfiar dos elogios…
Um homem evoca uma oportunidade perdida de comunicar
com a filha. O breve encontro, após tantos anos, desafia os
limites do seu mundo e torna inúteis as suas palavras.
A man recalls a moment of a lost opportunity to
communicate with his daughter. Their brief meeting after
so many years undermines his world and renders his words
meaningless.

revisitam as suas memórias para compreender o desenvolvimento dos seus corpos.

years. They arrived to Barcelona following their dreams,
alone, illegally, when they were minors. Now, they are no

Dona Fúnfia usa saia desde que se lembra. Um dia resolve
experimentar um par de calças. Motivada pela nova
liberdade de movimentos, decide resgatar a bicicleta da
arrecadação e fazer a sua volta a Portugal. Ela viaja ao
ritmo que as pernas permitem, conhecendo outros lugares
e associando os nomes nos mapas a sítios reais. A música
tradicional portuguesa marca-lhe o ritmo da pedalada e
alegra-lhe as etapas mais silenciosas do caminho.
Mrs. Funfia has been wearing skirts as far as she can
remember. One day, she tries a pair of trousers. Driven by a
new freedom of movement, she retrieves her bicycle from
the storage room and sets off on a tour of Portugal. She
travels at the pace set by her own legs. She finally matches
the names on the map to the actual place. Traditional
Portuguese music sets her pedaling pace and cheers up the
most silent parts of the path.

Eight-year-old Elisa lives alone with her mother Jeanne, in a
small isolated village of the French Alps. The little girl suffers
from her mother’s absence as Jeanne works every night in a bar
in town. Elisa tries to fill her loneliness by constantly wearing a
frightening wolf hand puppet. She is fascinated with this powerful, brave and fearless animal. One morning she sees on TV that

Ao fim de 5 anos de distanciamento, duas irmãs de Istambul

From the Sahara to Melilla, witnesses recount how they narrowly
escaped death, which took away their companions, literally and
symbolically, as migrants drowned at the border. Crossing the
desert on foot, people reach the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla where
they remain trapped in Morocco. The message is delivered by the
survivors, dense and poignant testimonies of migrants speaking for
their more unlucky fellow travelers, alternating with the views of the
head of the Spanish Civil Guard.

Após a guerra pela independência da Croácia, refugiados
croatas vindos da Bósnia são realojados nas casas que
sérvios da Croácia abandonaram durante o conflito. A dada
altura, os sérvios regressam às suas casas e um homem
desaparece sem deixar rasto.
When the Croatian War of Independence ended, the Croatian
refugees from Bosnia were re-housed in the homes of
Croatian Serbs who had left Croatia. Now, Serbs are coming
back, and one man disappears without a trace.

Between the alleys of the poor neighbourhood and the
roads leading to the villas of the luxury compound where
she works, Nawara commutes everyday on her way to

O Circo Shems’y está localizado junto a um dos bairros de lata mais
pobres de Marrocos. Todos os anos, centenas de jovens acorrem
a prestar audições, procurando um futuro no circo. Pirates of Salé
conta a história de quatro destes jovens artistas numa dura viagem de
transformação. É um filme que mostra o que é ser jovem num lugar
com poucas oportunidades e pouco espaço para sonhar.
Cirque Shems’y sits on the edge of one of Morocco’s poorest slums,
and hundreds of teenagers come to audition each year, desperately
hoping to find a new future in the circus. Pirates of Salé tells the
story of four of these young performers on a tough journey of
transformation. This is a film about being young in a place with few
opportunities and daring to dream.

de mulheres refugiadas e migrantes forçadas em Portugal,
com diversas origens e experiências de vida. A intenção das
imagens captadas por cada uma delas terá várias interpretações. Uma será, claramente, a da própria mulher que as
captou. Essa consta na legenda ou num breve comentário
que lhe corresponde. A outra cabe a quem as vê: convidamos o público a deixar o seu comentário em cada fotografia

This exhibition results from a challenge presented to a
group of refugee women in Portugal, who have different
origins and life experiences. The intention of the images
is open to several interpretations. The photographer’s is
stated on the photo subtitle; other interpretations are left

Children’s way of seeing and talking is to magnify things,
interrogating, doubting and wanting to understand the world
around them. In this workshop we will screen a film that
wants to know about these ways of seeing, and afterwards
we will transform words into images through an activity of
cinema and fine arts for all the family!

O que faz o Mediterrâneo não são as suas margens,
mas o trânsito que o atravessa, trânsito de pessoas que
transportam consigo histórias e hábitos sociais e culturais
e, quando podem, os seus bens. No Mediterrâneo cruzamse itinerários profundamente assimétricos: os dos paquetes
e turistas que em geral vão no sentido Norte-Sul (e agora
se retraem), e os dos migrantes e refugiados que vêm no
sentido inverso. Os itinerários cruzam-se, mas as pessoas
não se vêem: uns porque vêm em fuga, ou ofuscados
pelo suposto brilho da margem de cá; outros porque as
lentes da Cultura e do Património deixam, muitas vezes, as
pessoas na sombra.

The Mediterranean is not defined by its margins, but by the
transit that crosses it, transit of people who carry with
them cultural and social customs, stories and, whenever
possible, their assets. Highly assimetrical trajectories cross
each other in the Mediterranean: cruises and turists usually
going from North to South and migrants and refugees that
aim to reach the coveted North. Although their trajectories
cross each other, they don’t see each other: some because
they are on the run or feel bewildered by the alleged
glimmer of the North shores; others because often the lens
of culture and heritage leaves people in the shadow.

A SOS Méditerranée foi fundada em 2015 por um conjunto
de cidadãos europeus. Confrontados com os incontáveis
naufrágios no Mediterrâneo, consideram ser seu dever
organizar missões de salvamento bem como reportar a
situação dos refugiados. O seu barco, Aquarius, cruza o
Mediterrâneo desde Fevereiro de 2016, e já salvou até à
data do Festival mais de 2400 boat people.
Livros, artesanato e sabores convivem num espaço
informal, onde poderá escolher o que deseja levar consigo,
de entre a oferta disponível. Um mercado de requintes
intelectuais e sensoriais.
SOS Méditerranée was founded in 2015 by an assembly
of European citizens. Faced with the many shipwrecks
in the Mediterranean Sea, they consider it their duty to
organize rescue missions and to testify about the situation
of refugees. Their boat, the Aquarius, has been sailing the
Mediterranean Sea since February 2016, rescuing more
than 2400 boat-people.
