Strokes affect the arteries within the brain. They can be caused by a clot or by ruptured blood vessels, both of which prevent or obstruct blood flowing to the brain. According to the American Stroke Association, strokes are the fourth leading cause of death. About 795,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. About 40 percent of deaths related to strokes are men, and 60 percent are women. Kathy Erickson, a nurse at Goodland Regional Medical Center, said the hospital was recently designated as an “Emergent Stroke Ready Facility.” This means that it has the capability of diagnosing and treating stroke patients before sending them to a more specialized facility for further care. “It means we have certain tools in place,” she said. “We have protocols in place to administer clot buster medicine. This helps break up the blood clot causing the stroke.” The hospital also has the ability to do CAT scans and bloodwork. These services are available 24 hours a day, every day. Erickson said most stroke patients are sent to the stroke center in Denver after being treated in Goodland. Erickson said there is a new app for Apple devices called FAST from the American Stroke Association, which is an acronym for: “Face dropping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911.” These are the three main symptoms of a stroke, she said, and there is a time limit to get to the hospital since Band, cheerleaders entertain at final home football game The Goodland High School marching band (above) and color guard (below) performed music from the computer game “World of Warcraft” during half time at the football game on Friday. Afterward the high school cheerleaders (right) performed a routine. The cheerleaders were joined on the sidelines by junior cheerleaders. The game was the annual Pink Out, in which the public and students were encouraged to wear pink for breast cancer awareness. It was also senior night. Senior football players and cheerleaders along with their parents were recognized before the game. Friday’s game was the final home football game for the regular season. They plan ahead, they fulfill their responsibilities. Congress must stop resolving one crisis by setting up another a few months down the road. One of the more amazing spectacles in the days after the government shutdown ended was the obsession in Washington with who won and who lost in the showdown. Yes, the capital is focused on next year’s elections, but honestly! There was only one real loser, and that was the American people. Why? Because nothing got resolved. The agreement leaves the government open only until mid-January, and gives the Treasury the ability to borrow through early February. All that effort secured us the barest minimum that we needed. Tax reform, spending, entitlements, jobs and economic growth: we’re no better off than we were before a small faction in Congress brought us to the brink of an unnecessary disaster. So the question is, can we avoid a similar crisis down the road? The record of the recent past gives no ground for optimism, though members of Congress may now recognize the enormous economic costs to the nation of a shutdown and near-default. To avoid repeating their recent sorry spectacle, however, they will have to confront three challenges. First, Congress has to break its habit of governing by crisis. Second, its members need to take a leaf from this most recent experience and remember that the essence of legislating is negotiation. Finally, they need to recognize that every time Congress fails to assert itself, other institutions gain more power at its expense. Great democracies do not lurch from doomsday moment to doomsday moment. They plan ahead, confront and resolve their challenges, fulfill their responsibilities abroad, and respond to their own people’s needs. Congress can do none of these things so long as its members insist on resolving one crisis by setting up another a few months down the road. Congress only works well when its members understand some key things: that each party has to walk away with something; that it’s crucial to preserve flexibility and avoid pandering and scorched-earth rhetoric; that it needs to address the issues Americans care about most; that to avoid failure all the key players need to be at the table; and that they need the fortitude not to walk away from talks when things are going poorly. Years ago, key players in serious negotiations went out to Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington, and were confined to the compound until they came to a resolution. We need legislators who are willing to roll up their sleeves and commit that fully to the process. By its inaction, Congress has given power to the President, who can use executive actions to enact policy. It has strengthened the federal bureaucracy by leaving regulatory decisions to federal agencies with very little direction or oversight. It has given massive economic power to the Federal Reserve, since someone has to promote economic growth in the face of congressional failure to deal with our fiscal issues. And it has allowed the Supreme Court to become the central policy-making body on controversial issues from campaign finance to affirmative action to environmental regulation. “Any society that relies on nine unelected judges to resolve the most serious issues of the day is not a functioning democracy,” Justice Anthony Kennedy said in a recent speech. I’m sorry to say that he’s talking about us. – Lee Hamilton, director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University. The Goodland Star-News (USPS No. 222-460. This should not surprise us, as the vast majority of the press, excepting FOX News, has never been friendly toward this movement. The view that it instead may be soaring is treated nowhere in their coverage. That Senator Ted Cruz, a Tea Party senator, received an eight minutes standing ovation from a large crowd when he returned to Texas is unheard of and certainly supports the view that many seem favorable to a member of Congress finally willing to fight; that he isn’t just there to protect his party or job. So who is the so-called Tea Party? I know a little about it because I helped form it – as did you. It was one of the most spontaneous political movements in U.S. History somewhat similar to the spontaneous rise of the Republican Party, where people united in the 1850’s in their opposition to the extension of slavery; or the Populist Party movement in the 1890’s, based largely on its opposition to the gold standard and supported the Free Silver movement. In each, as with the Tea Party, there were no known original leaders. Tea Party founders, you and I, loved the Constitution, which limits government, and the free market philosophy, that together made us the freest most productive and prosperous nation on earth. Understood also was that both parties must get back to these philosophies lest freedom and prosperity be lost to future generations. Actually the movement began in opposition to George W. Bush’s $700 billion stimulus bailout package at the end of his term, which received bi-partisan support from PresidentElect Barack Obama and the Democrats. Both parties were on the same page and taking us in the wrong direction – bigger government and debt insanity. Tea Party groups began to spring up everywhere in early February 2009, each with their own leaders. Three city leaders in the from other pens • dr. harold pease East, learning of the simultaneous rise of sister cites, contacted each other to compare notes. They liked the name Tea Party because they wished, by that name, to emulate our founding philosophy. Even so, they were uncertain what their core values should be so they invited Internet submissions from the thousands who felt similarly. Still, there was no known single leader. My daily submissions encouraged getting back to the Constitution. The three most frequently submitted core values, and the one’s selected, were: limited constitutional government, free market and fiscal responsibility – precisely the collective views of our Founders. In my community the leader of the movement was Julie Demos, a second grade teacher, who had had no prior political experience. She was perfect. This was the gathering of the people who no longer wished to use political party, but the Founders core values, in promoting good government. Between three and five thousand folks gathered at the Liberty Bell in April 15, 2009, many spoke, including myself. Over 600 cities throughout the nation had similar gatherings. The movement was not party based. We wished to attract those who wished to get back to these core values. Our own Congressman Kevin McCarthy and House Speaker John Boehner, were denied the podium for that reason. They attended and viewed the proceedings as spectators as did everyone else. This was not a Republican Party rally! Fifteen thousand heard myself and others speak on getting back to the Constitution at the Tulare Ag Center on July 4th in support of over a million who gathered in Washington DC. Two other times such numbers gathered in the capitol before years end. When I was young I assumed that I would have been with the patriots at Lexington and Concord when the British came to take their guns, or with Patrick Henry when he gave his famous speech that was highlighted by the phrase, “Give me liberty or give me death.” I would have been at Valley Forge with George Washington. When I learned much later that only a third of the people were patriots, another third too apathetic to care, and yet another third Tories, who actually assisted the British during the war, I wondered whether I would have had the clarity of thought to have picked the right side. Would have you? It comes to this, if you share the core values of the Founding Fathers you will befriend the Tea Party movement, then and now; if you do not, then it is likely that you would have been a Tory, then and now. The Tea Party fight is not just about defunding Obamacare, which turns over to the federal government one-seventh of the economy, it is this and so many other things that have been taken over by the federal government without clear constitutional language as per Article I, Section 8. Any other approach weakens the Constitution. It is about over-taxing one part of the population to feed the other. It is about over-spending to the point that the entire economy collapses. It is about liberty itself. Tories in the American Revolution could not see any of this and opposed liberty. Tories today, from both parties, are equally blind. Some of us value movements and people, like Ted Cruse, that actually fight for liberty and that is why he received the eight-minute standing ovation. So please don’t be angry at the Tea Party for standing for our founding principles, instead be angry with those who demean them. Dr. Harold Pease is an expert on the United States Constitution. He has taught history and political science from this perspective for over 25 years at Taft College. To read more of his weekly articles, please visit www.LibertyUnderFire.org. For whom the horn blows I had been working as a landscape laborer, digging ditches, laying sod, and all sorts of physical labor. But as school started in the fall, the cold set in, and there was very little of that type of work to be had. I checked the employment board at the university twice each day trying to be the first one in line for any new job that might open. I did odd jobs of all kinds, but continued to look for more constant work. Then, finally, I saw a posting for someone to drive a mail truck around campus. I hurried and filled out the application, and soon had the job. Each afternoon at 1:00, after I finished my classes, I would bike over to the campus mail center. Afternoon classes were still in full swing, and it was often a slow drive to the buildings in the center of campus since I had to make my way down busy sidewalks. I drove the last mail run of the day, and I collected and dropped off mail at every building’s mail room. Seldom did I have to sort the mail into the separate mail boxes, as that was someone else’s job. But once in a while, when we were shorthanded, I would receive a sorting assignment in a few of the buildings. One day, a few of our mail sorters had the flu, and everyone needed to do extra work. In the center of campus the three biggest and busiest buildings were laid out in a triangle, and it was in them that I was assigned to sort the mail after I dropped it off. I decided, for efficiency, to haul the bins of mail from the truck into each building, and then work my way back, sorting as I went. I had just finished hauling the mail to the last of the three buildings when a vehicle’s from other pens • daris howard horn started to blare. It was so loud I could hear it clear into the mail room in the center of the building, and its tone was grating and obnoxious. The horn blared the whole time I sorted, and I couldn’t believe its owner didn’t get it stopped. As I stepped from the building, the horn was so loud that I knew it had to be heard all over the campus. I quickly sorted the mail in the next two buildings with the horn blaring the whole time. I finally finished and headed back to my truck. As I approached it, to my dismay, I found it surrounded by hundreds of people, and, worst of all, it had its horn stuck on. Curious students were leaning out the windows of all of the surrounding buildings. A half dozen campus security cars were there, and the officers were trying to control the crowd and deal with the situation. The police had set up temporary barricades around my truck to keep back those who were agitated and threatening harm to it. People were yelling and waving their arms, trying to be understood above the noise. I worked my way through the crowd and reached the police barricade. The officer there saw the mail bins I carried and let me through. When the officer that was trying to break into my truck saw me, he moved aside, and I unlocked it. I popped the hood and quickly pulled a wire from the horn. Suddenly, everything was quiet. I turned with a sheepish grin to face the crowd. The students, who were happy to miss class, were laughing, but the professors, whose classes the noise had disrupted, looked like they wanted my blood. I saw one professor I knew. Trying to diffuse the situation, I joked to him, “I was wondering who it was who let his horn blare like that.” Before he turned to go back to salvage what he could of his class, he glared at me and replied, “Well, I guess now we all know who the idiot is, don’t we?” where to write U.S. Sen. By Kevin Bottrell [email protected] The Goodland High School varsity football team secured a spot in the Bi-District games with a 43-0 shutout of the Concordia Panthers on Friday at Cowboy Stadium. The Cowboys have one remaining district game at Colby on Thursday, but with two wins and the large point total, they will come out ahead of Concordia, Clay Center and Colby no matter the results of that game. Bi-Districts will be Tuesday, Nov. 5. If the Cowboys win there, Class 4A Regional football is Saturday, Nov. 9, with sectionals on Friday, Nov. 15, sub-state on Friday, Nov. 22, and state on Saturday, Nov. 30. On the opening possession, the Cowboys drove to the 46, then Dax Ruhs made a catch at the Concordia 30 and ran it in for a touchdown. However, holding was called on the offense, negating the score. The Cowboys had three straight penalties on that drive, resulting in second down and 42 to go. A complete pass brought Goodland back up to third and seventh, but they were unable to convert the third down. Concordia took over on the five yardline after a punt. The Cowboy defense forced a three and out. Ruhs received the punt and ran it back to the 22 yardline. On the next play Taylen Smith caught a pass and ran it in for a 74-yard touchdown play. An extra point gave the Cowboys a 7-0 lead. On the next drive, Concordia fumbled. John Peden recovered the ball for the Cowboys, who drove to the Red Zone as the quarter ended. The Cowboys scored a touchdown early in the second quarter. A two-point conversion made it 15-0. Ruhs then recovered a fumble deep in Concordia territory and ran it in for a second touchdown. An extra point kick made it 22-0. Ruhs was called for two defensive hits, one of which was waved off. The Cowboys weren’t able to score again in the quarter, but kept hammering the Panther defense. In the third quarter, Goodland scored a touchdown on a pass from Trey Teeter caught by Ruhs. They put in another touchdown on a run by Austin Hernandez, resulting in a 36-0 lead going into the fourth quarter. With one quarter remaining, Hernandez made an interception. The Cowboys drove to the goal line, then Hernandez made the final touchdown of the game on a one-yard Dax Ruhs scooped up a fumble during Friday’s football game run. Teeter put in the extra point to against Concordia, running it in for a touchdown. Photo by Kevin Bottrell/The Goodland Star-News give the Cowboys a final 43-0 win.
