Revelation 5: A Journey to Joy
Introduction The doctor said, “If you believe in miracles this would be one.”

The doctor was talking about Alcides Moreno. By every law of physics and
medicine Moreno should have died. Moreno was a window washer. He rode
platforms with his brother Edgar high into the sky to wash skyscrapers. From
there he could look down to see the pavement far below where the people looked
like ants. On Dec 7, 2007 catastrophe struck the Moreno family. As the brothers
worked from the 47th story of a high rise, their platform collapsed, and Alcides
and Edgar fell from the sky. If you are a believer in miracles, this would be one.

No Alcides Moreno didn’t land on a passing plane or catch his shirt on a
flagpole or have anything else amazing happen like you see in movies. He fell
the entire forty-seven stories to the pavement below. As would be expected, his
brother Edgar died from the fall, but somehow Alcides did not. He lived. For 2
weeks he hung onto life by a thread. Then, on Christmas Day he spoke and
reached out to touch the nurses face One month later, the doctors said he would
be walking again soon. If you believe in miracles, this would be one.

In the beginning of the human race, Adam also fell from a great height.
From sinless glory in the image of God, Adam rebelled against God and fell into
sin, death, and judgement, and in this terrible fall he brought with him the whole
human race. But “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God the Son
left the heights of heaven and descended to the earth to become a man. He
lived a sinless life and then willingly went to the cross to die for the sins of
mankind. ON the third day he rose again, and in his resurrection he made it
possible for all to rise again and live forever.- This is a miracle.

If you have your Bible turn to Revelation 5 as we look at the worthy miracle
maker. We have been asking the Lord to Move us. 2 Weeks ago we asked
the Lord to move us to be a people of vision, then a people of
submission. This morning I want us to ask the Lord to move us to be a
people of Joy.

I want you to consider some of the happiest moments you have
experienced in life.
For us to really be able to experience Joy or happiness, I think we also
have to have experienced the inverse.
We have to know hopelessness before we know hope. We must
experience the agony of defeat before the great victories of life are as full
as they can be.
This morning I want you to go on a trip with me.
The trip is the Journey of Joy.

1 Then
I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on
the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed
with seven seals.
2 And
I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice,
“Who is worthy1 to open the scroll and break its seals?”
axios: weight, merit, value,
ability. Not just anyone is worthy.
GOD WANTS TO REVEAL HIS WORD TO ME
God has a Word for Me. God has a word that is for you. He has information that
you need. It is life saving information. It is hope giving information.
Mighty Angel- Some have speculated that this is Gabriel but scripture doesn’t
say specifically who this angel is but it is a mighty angel.
APPARENTLY- There are angels and Mighty angels.
This angel asks a startling question. We have the scrolls but who can open
them. Imagine the scene here.

Who is Worthy?... an eerie silence seems deafening.
Its that moment that we need
a knight in shining armor.
a hero. a warrior.
a champion to cheer
These are what we need in that moment but we do not see a hero, warrior,
or champ in that moment.

ABLE/WORTHY
no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth
was able to open the scroll or to look into it,
NONE ARE WORTHY/ ABLE TO REVEAL GODS WORD
1. In Heaven: Heavenly beings/ Angels/ demonic forces
2. In Earth: Those who are currently living
3. Under the Earth: Those that have died
Moses- not a great speaker
Jonah- Ran from God
Jacob- was a liar
Noah- was a drunk
Rahab was a prostitute
David had an affair
Jeremiah depressed
Solomon rich in wisdom but poor
in lifestyle
John Baptist- poor
Gideon and Thomas- doubted
Peter lacked self control
James/John- self righteous
Paul had a temper as did many
that God used.
Even those that were used in a
great way by God were still
sinful, shameful, and flawed.
ONLY JESUS WAS WORTHY
a. none of the great hero’s of the faith are sufficient.
In 2006, two performing artists named Laura Barnett and Sandra Spanna
created an exhibit in a storefront in Manhattan that allowed passerby’s to
alleviate their guilt.

The two women dressed as nineteenth-century washerwomen and sat
in the storefront. One underlined the words on the glass- “Air your dirty
laundry. 100% Confidential, Anonymous, and Free” Onlookers were
encouraged to write their deepest secrets on pieces of paper. The
washerwomen then collected the confessions and displayed them in the
window for all to see.

The sins and secrets ranged from humorous to horrid.
• The hermit crab was still alive when I threw it down the trash shoot
• I make fun of one of my friends all the time, behind her back. She enrages me. I
often wonder what she says about me and if we are really friends.
• Home feels lonely.
• I’ve not visited my parents grave and just cant bring myself to go.
• I am dating a man that is married and has kids. He is compensating me so I don’t
feel guilty. He has millions and I’m 25. I use to feel beautiful.
Barnett said the onlookers are often overwhelmed by the weight of others sins:
“We go there, and the window is empty, and we’re wearing all white. At the
end, the window is full. It’s exhausting. Some of those things are really,
really, sad. And afterward I need to take a bath.”

Years ago an S-4 submarine was rammed by a ship off the coast of
Massachusetts. It sank immediately. The entire crew was trapped in a
prison house of death. Every effort was made to rescue the crew, but
all ultimately failed. Near the end of the ordeal, a deep-sea diver, who
was doing everything in his power to find a way for the crew’s release,
thought he heard a tapping on the steel wall of the sunken sub. He
placed his helmet up against the side of the vessel and realized it was
Morse Code. He listened carefully and got the repeating question. The
question within the sunken sub was, “Is... there... any... hope?”

and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God
sent out into all the earth.

JESUS SECURES ACCESS TO GODS WORD
How do you find joy and life? Its all in who you know.
In 2001 a motorcade carrying the security services chief of Gaza
began receiving fire from Israeli Troops in the midst of the IsraeliArab conflict. The frightened security official called Yasser Arafat
from his car for help. Arafat, immediately in turn called the US
ambassador who then called the US secretary of state Colin
Powell. Powell then called Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. In
turn Sharon ordered the shooting to stop. And it did.
The security chief’s connections eventually saved his life. In a
similar way, Christians have a divine connection to the ultimate
power of the universe and that makes a world of difference in every
situation.

Revelation 5: A Journey to Joy
Jesus- the one who was and is and is to come, the creator, the
sustainer, the redeemer, deliverer, restorer, the Lion and Lamb...
He is the WORTHY ONE.
Jesus is the door, the way, the path, and the only hope you have.
INVITATION:
I began our time together by saying that we would go on a journey
together. That journey had the destination of Joy.
The Joy that can be had today begins and ends with Jesus.
You need Jesus. Realized or not, sin has ruined your life. Every
pain you’ve ever experienced a result of living in a sin sick world.
Jesus will one day right the scales or justice as judge. On the day
of your death you will stand guilty of sin before a judge that knows
more than your actions. He knows your mind and heart.
If you are not walking with Jesus why not make today the day you
make Jesus Lord of your life. This morning if you need Jesus call
out to him now.
