A Tour of the Portuguese Discoveries
The period of the Portuguese discoveries is
one of the most important milestones in the
history of the city of Lagos. With the arrival
and departure of caravels and other sailing
ships, it became possible to find new lands,
latitudes, peoples and cultures.

Esperança” projeta a cultura e a história algarvia no mundo,
assumindo o papel de relevo desempenhado pela região nos
Descobrimentos Portugueses.

“Boa Esperança” caravel replica, 1990s - The caravel “Boa
Esperança” (Good Hope), moored at Lagos Marina since 2001,
launches Algarve’s culture and history in the world, addressing
the prominent role played by the region in the Portuguese
Discoveries.

- This statue was created to celebrate the 400 years of the
elevation of Lagos to a City status.
4. Mercado de Escravos, séculos XV-XVII

Espaço emblemático pela sua ligação aos Descobrimentos, e
onde é destacada a importância de Lagos na chegada a
Portugal dos primeiros escravos, em 1444, oriundos de África.
Slave Market, XV - XVII centuries - An iconic venue for its
connection to the Portuguese Discoveries, and where the
significance of Lagos is noted in that it is where the first slaves
from Africa arrived in Portugal in 1444.

6. Antigo Cais, 2008
Praça Infante D. Henrique
Mais conhecido por Cais das Descobertas, foi “devolvido” ao
olhar do visitante pelos trabalhos arqueológicos ali
desenvolvidos em 2008. É agora possível observar-se a zona
onde desembarcava quem viesse por mar no século XV.
The Old Dock - Better known as Dock of the Discoveries, it was
"returned" to the visitors’ gaze by the archaeological work
which took place there in 2008. Now it is possible to observe
the area where those who travelled by sea in the fifteenth
century disembarked.
7. Janela Manuelina implantada no edifício do
Castelo dos Governadores, 1495-1520

Segundo a tradição, foi a partir desta janela que D. Sebastião
terá assistido, em 1579, a uma última missa antes de partir
para a Batalha de Alcácer-Quibir.
Manueline window at the Castelo dos Governadores (Governors’
Castle), 1495-1520 - According to tradition, it was in front of this
beautiful window that, in 1579, King Sebastião allegedly said
his last prayers before his fateful trip to Africa, to the Battle of
Alcácer Quibir.
8. Estátua a Gil Eanes, 1960

Jardim da Constituição
O monumento homenageia o lacobrigense Gil Eanes,
escudeiro do Infante D. Henrique que em 1434 dobrou o Cabo
Bojador.
Statue of Gil Eanes, 1960 - The statue was created in the 1960s
to honor this Lagos navigator, Prince Henry’s squire, also
responsible for the crossing of Cape Bojador in 1434.
9. Castelo dos Governadores
Jardim da Constituição
De fundação árabe, no século XIV foi aqui estabelecido o
governo militar do Algarve. Embora hoje pouco reste desse
castelo, conserva-se a Janela Manuelina.
Governors’ Castle - Of Arab construction, in the fourteenth
century a military government for the Algarve was settled
here. Nowadays, little remains of this castle, safe for the
Manueline window.
