Brief description of university, faculty, department, number of students:
The Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPLeiria) is a Portuguese public institution of higher education
currently having about 980 teachers, 11.000 students and modern facilities and equipment. The
development of R&D and cooperation activities is a strategic priority for IPLeiria which has been
increasing significantly the number of industrial property requests, fellowships and scientific
publications. IPLeiria develops mainly applied research, has 13 research units and 4 delegations from
other national R&D institutions. Its teachers/researchers are involved in several national, european
and international R&D projects, strengthening partnerships with companies and other education
and research institutions.
IPLeiria has several schools, among which the School of Technology & Management. This school is
also divided in functional units, one of which is its Civil Engineering Department. The Civil
Engineering Department has about 20 teachers/researchers, which are PhD holders on several
scientific areas (structures, construction, urban planning, transportation and mobility, hydraulics,
geothechnics remote sensing and geographic information systems). The Civil Engineering
Department is responsible for lecturing a first cycle degree in Civil Engineering and a Master degree
also in Civil Engineering, both in accordance with the Bologna process. The Civil Engineering
Department is very well equipped with several research facilities.
Currently, IPleiria is proactively involved in several international programs and activities, following a
coherent internationalization strategy. The Civil Engineering Department has been taking part in
some international partnerships such as:
