Konecranes helps Direct Rail
Services remain on track in Scotland
Continuing its long-held
association with national rail fright
operator, Direct Rail Services (DRS),
Konecranes has manufactured and
installed a 110T fixed goliath crane
at their new facility at Georgemas
Junction in the North of Scotland.

As a major rail freight provider to
the nuclear fuels industry, DRS – a
level 5 contract service customer
of the UK’s foremost lifting
equipment manufacturer – is using
the goliath crane, which provides
a lifting height of 11.9 metres, to
tranship flasks from road to rail
transport for delivery to a nuclear
reprocessing plant in Cumbria.
Spanning some 21 metres and
having an overall length of 24
metres, the double girder goliath
Biopharma
crane was installed by a team of
six crane service engineers who
remained on-site for the duration
of the contract. In order to ensure
that the customer could make
the terminal fully operational in
accordance with its contractual
obligations, and despite facing
some extreme weather conditions
in the process, the Konecranes
team spent a combined total of 17
days onsite, often working through
the night. As a result, Konecranes
delivered the project two days
ahead of schedule.
Involving the combined efforts
of Konecranes’ Industrial Cranes,
Modernisations and Crane Service
business units, both the structural
and electrical design of the goliath
crane was undertaken by the
company’s in-house design team at
its crane production plant in East
Kilbride. It is here that the crane was
also built and functionality tested
before being subjected to rigorous
H&S and quality checks.

Bradshaw Electric
Vehicles is Britain’s
largest manufacturer of
industrial electric vehicles,
providing specialist
electric material handling
equipment to a broad
spectrum of household
name companies for a
variety of applications
including waste movement,
manufacturing and
line feed, logistics and
distribution, hospitals, railways and airports. If a client has
the need to transport goods, then we can supply a tailormade vehicle to suit their requirements.
This year’s Recycling and Waste Management exhibition,
held at Birmingham’s NEC, was an excellent opportunity for
Bradshaw to meet key decision makers within the industry.
Bradshaw’s Stand, 5W100, proved popular with a high
footfall across the three days. Sarah Glover, Marketing
Manager at Bradshaw Electric Vehicles commented: “We
enjoyed hosting a busy stand and having the opportunity
to meet up with both existing customers and making new
contacts, being able to speak to them about material
handling solutions we can provide.”
With a range of products displayed on the stand,
including the pedestrian controlled PFB1500 high tip
waste collection, able to carry 1,500KG, as well as the
Bradshaw T450 and T800 tow tractors, which tow up to
4,500KG and 8,000KG respectively, the stand gave visitors
a glimpse of what Bradshaw Electric Vehicles provide.
Bradshaw Electric Vehicles regularly provide solutions for
waste management, most recently supplying an FB1000
load carrier to St James Group. Having used the Bradshaw
FB1000 load carrier for over 6 years at the prestigious and
well-established Grosvenor Waterside development, St
James Group purchased another FB1000 load carrier for
use at Kew Bridge West Development, Brentford, to be
used by the Managing Agents for the site.

EXTERNALLY BEADED
WINDOWS CAN BE
SIMPLY LIKE UNLOCKED
DOORS TO A BURGLAR
Now there is a cost effective solution
Many homes have double glazed
windows where the glass is secured by
a beading on the outside. This can often
easily be removed and is one of the most
common ways that burglars get in. Taking
out the glass is quick and makes no noise.
NO-GO GLASS LOCKS are designed to
be easily fitted to existing windows and
are a very cost effective way to make a
property even more secure.

Good adhesion and high water resistance
Many lubrication points on a ship are in contact
with seawater. Two criteria are particularly
important to prevent the lubricant from being
washed off from time to time affecting the
eco-system: On the one hand, the lubricant
has to be highly adhesive and, on the other
hand, it has to comply with all requirements on
environmental compatibility. With Klüberbio AG
39-602, Klϋber Lubrication has now launched
a new, eco-compatible adhesive lubricant for
open gears and steel cables.
“This speciality grease is targeted for
applications that require adhesion, corrosion
protection,
resistance
to water
washout,
and high
protection
from wear,”
says Dirk
Fabry,
Business Development Manager, Business Unit
Marine, Oil & Gas from Klüber Lubrication. "The
main application areas of Klüberbio AG 39-602
are steel cables and open pinion drives of
winches and cranes."
Klüberbio AG 39-602 contains more than 60%
of renewable raw materials, resulting in reduced
environmental impact in the event of discharge
into water. The new adhesive lubricant is
based on ester oil and complies with the 2013
Vessel General Permit requirements of the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in
terms of biodegradability, minimal toxicity and
bio-accumulation to be met by Environmentally
Acceptable Lubricants.*

New stern tube oils offer longer oil service life
and reduce lubricant consumption
Even very small oil leakage through propeller
water-side seals caused by operational
wear, accidents or incorrect operation can
entail a high environmental impact when
mineral oil-based lubricants are used. Klüber
Lubrication developed the Klüberbio RM 2
series of biodegradable synthetic stern tube
oils especially for the lubrication of propeller
bushes and shaft seals in fixed-pitch and
controllable-pitch propellers. These special
oils contain more than 90% of renewable
raw materials and their biodegradability is at
least 60% according to the OECD 301 F test.
Klüberbio RM 2 oils are non-toxic to marine
organisms.
They bear
the European
Ecolabel
and comply
with the
requirements
of 2013 Vessel
General Permit of the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA).*
"Our new stern tube oils show good resistance
to oxidation and hydrolysis as well as thermal
stability," says Dirk Fabry, Business development

High bay cold store in
the desert
Due to increasing demand for deepfreeze capacity, INL has decided to
change its warehouse concept and
bring the temperature of all 14 aisles
down to -28°C.
This is equivalent to doubling the
space previously available. As general
contractor for the entire facility,
Unitechnik is responsible for the
technical changeover of all logistics
systems in this extraordinary step.
Since its commissioning, INL’s 22 metre
high cold-storage facility has featured
two automated high-bay racking
stores of seven aisles each. To date,
the logistics service provider has used
one warehouse to store dry goods
at +25°C and the other for frozen
products stored at temperatures
down to -28°C. The company plans on
changing the facility over to be able to
respond to the increasing demand for
deep-freeze storage.
Manager, Business Unit Marine, Oil&Gas from
Klüber Lubrication. "This results in extended oil
service life and reduced lubricant consumption
and disposal costs."
Standard elastomers like NBR and FKM are
resistant to Klüberbio RM 2 oils. The new stern
tube oils are approved by leading propeller
shaft seal manufacturers.

As general contractor for the
intralogistics, Unitechnik has
supervised the project at Dubai
Logistics City from the very beginning.
The technical changeover of the
systems used in the former dry goods
section is primarily related to the
control technology of the automatic
stacker cranes and conveyor systems.
In particular, the sensor systems, power
and load handling units are to be
adapted to withstand constant cold.

Hi-Port Controls for PROFIBUS
fault-finding and components
Established by Richard Needham in 1990, Hi Port
Software Limited, started selling ProfiTrace PROFIBUS
analysers in 2004 – and has since evolved
into a dedicated specialist UK distributor
and reseller of this and other PROFIBUS
related equipment for the industrial
process and automation market
place – backing these products
with application advice,
installation audits, fault-finding
services and ProfiTrace User
Training.
Trading now as
Hi-Port Controls,
their PROFIBUS
portfolio addresses
the design, installation,
commissioning and
maintenance requirements for a
wide range of industries from airport
baggage handling, through glass, steel
and paper manufacture to diesel engine assembly
and control of water treatment works. In 2012,
for example, Hi-Port supplied 20 of the Procentec
COMbricks network performance monitoring and
reporting sets to Heathrow to provide low level
fault checking of the control systems, so helping
to ensure the ongoing efficiency and reliability of
the complex automated baggage handling systems.
Similar, COMbricks sets are also now being used
in the manufacture of motor vehicle parts, paper
manufacturing, food, pharmaceuticals and other
automation systems where extremely high control
system reliability needs to be ensured, either for
safety reasons or to avoid the potentially very high
cost of any associated system failures which
might occur. No one wants to loose
a bag within an airport, see
any spills from failure
of a water treatment
works, or even consider
what might happen in
the event of a major
brewery system or food
processing failure!
Hi-Port products include
PROFIBUS cable, strip tools
and connectors to hubs,
repeaters, terminators and
comprehensive traffic analysis
and fault-finding tools – with new
items being added to the catalogue
in response to client suggestions
and demands. Richard added: “All our products are
sourced from internationally recognised industry
leaders and represent the very best equipment
available for the demanding, long life, process control
and automation applications for which they are
needed – and, in the case of our diagnostic tools,
we use these kits for our site audits and trouble –
shooting contracts, so can offer lots of supporting
examples of their effectiveness.”
“But our services don’t simply stop there! As well as
distributors, we are also subject specialists, advising
on the correct and most cost effective product for
specific jobs and applications.
The latest in our catalogue are several
new ProfiHub repeaters, recently
released by Procentec. These add
to their long standing A5 and
B5 5-way PROFIBUS repeaters
which have been successfully
deployed for several years.
The new devices offer
different numbers of

new features such as a

supply options, redundancy
options and embedded diagnostics

anything begin to fail in the
connected control network.
Discussing what 2014
has to hold for Hi Port,
Richard concluded:
“We are looking to
build and develop
the range of
products and
services that
have gained us
recognition todate, looking for
ever more feedback from
clients as to how we can help
them more effectively. Important shop windows
for us are the free PROFIBUS UK seminars
which are held throughout the
country to promote PROFIBUS
technology and at which
we exhibit our equipment.

Established in 1975, Bradshaw Electric
Vehicles is Britain’s largest manufacturer of
industrial electric vehicles. The company
provides specialist electric material handling
equipment to a broad spectrum of household
name companies for a variety of applications
including waste movement and recycling,
manufacturing and line feed, logistics and
distribution, hospitals, railways and airports,
transport and leisure.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary next year, the
company is proud to be the largest UK-based
manufacturer of electric vehicles, growing a
loyal customer base across an ever-increasing
range of industry sectors. Continuing to
develop a showcase of products, Bradshaw is
the preferred supplier for a growing number
of global customers looking for electric tow
tractors, electric tow trucks and electric utility
vehicles.
Drew Bradshaw commented: “These are
exciting times for us, our range of vehicles
The product range includes ride on and
pedestrian controlled tow tractors, load
carriers, utility vehicles and personnel
carriers, together with a range of service
options and vehicles that can be adapted to

and the changing needs may be.
is stronger than ever. In addition to our safe,
robust and versatile product range, we also
offer a bespoke design service. If a client has
the need to transport goods, then we can
supply a tailor-made vehicle to suit their
requirements.”
St James Group recently took delivery of a
new FB1000 vehicle from Bradshaw.
Having used the Bradshaw FB1000 load carrier
for over 6 years at the prestigious and wellestablished Grosvenor Waterside development,
St James Group has now purchased another
FB1000 load carrier for use by the Managing
Agents at Kew Bridge West Development, a
contemporary collection of 1, 2 & 3 bedroom
apartments in Brentford.
The vehicle, with a tow load capacity of
2,000KG, will primarily be used to collect
refuse bins within the basement and then
transport the bins to the refuse collection,
located on the ground floor. With a payload
capacity of 1000KG the vehicle has the
flexibility of also carrying supplies around
the site. Not only do Bradshaw manufacture
and sell vehicles, but the company also offers
electric vehicles for event hire and short-term
hire – anything from one week to five years
– where there may be a temporary upturn in
production or a one-off need.
Drew Bradshaw continued: “Our whole
company ethos is that a complete package
is offered to ensure the customer is always
happy. Our sales team will provide a solution
to a materials handling problem, and the
aftercare and support is always the best we can
give. We have a dedicated support team to
answer all aftersales queries and all members
of the team have many years’ experience with
our products and have been trained on them
as well.”
Kite Packaging’s
Environmentally
Friendly Products
‘Packaging that doesn’t cost
the Earth,’ is the latest range
of environmentally friendly
packaging available on Kite
Packaging’s website, who
supply stock product to
businesses 24/7 and offer
a next day delivery service.
The range has been designed
with the help of WRAP (Waste
Reduction Action Programme)
and fulfils several key aims of
its business customers – waste reduction, cost reduction
and sustainability improvement.
The first product of this range, designed by Kite’s team a
number of years ago, is the Enviro-box. The box is just as
strong as a double-wall carton but manufactured using
single-wall board that has been reinforced to provide that
added strength. The materials used are 7% lighter which
reduces delivery costs, and the manufacturing process
involves 30% less CO2 emissions than regular boxes.

Risk Analysis, Health & Safety News
Risk analysis: myths, confusions
and real sense
Dr. Alexander Fedotov, company “Invar-project,”
Moscow, Russia.
action need to be implemented. In contrary
correction actions are needed.
To arrange routine testing/control and to write
documents? But it is already in GMP!
The paper discusses some hot topics of risk analysis
methods that are forced by EU GMP regulators but
in fact are misleading and scientifically wrong.
But it is a very dangerous approach!
It has three fundamental mistakes:
I. Evaluation criteria and Acceptance level are
appointed by human subjectively. This arbitrary
estimation serves further as a basis for
responsible decision.
II.Values with different sense are multiplied and
the result serves as a basis for conclusion. It is a
huge and obvious methodical mistake.
III. This arbitrary numbers are offered for
estimation with high responsibility on safety,
where no risk is possible!
Risk analysis helps inspector
How? One of inspectors writes that inspector has
not enough time. Papers on risk analysis prepared
by manufacturer make the inspector’s task easier to
understand work of the plant.
The whole paper can be sent by the author on
request to email address: [email protected].
EU GMP and ICH Q9 promises
Part III of EU GMP Guideline. Introduction to EU
GMP says: “The aim of Part III is to clarify regulatory
expectations and it should be viewed as a source of
information on best current practices.”
ICH Q9 Guide says: “Quality risk management
supports a scientific and practical approach to
decision-making.”
These are responsible and promising statements.
But are they true or just cover misleading myths?
Let’s look how risk analysis methods work on
example of FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis).
FMEA method: comparisons of incomparable
It is stated that FMEA gives “Quantity estimation of
risk” making following steps:
1.All risks shall be grouped on evaluation criteria:
- Severity/Impact (I);
- Occurrence or estimation of probability of event (O);
- Detectability (D).
2.Each of criteria has numerical value, for example,
numbers from 1 to 5, where 1 represents the
lowest risk and 5 means the highest risk.
3.Risk Priority Number (RPN) is calculated by
multiplying evaluation criteria: IxOxD. RPN range
is from 1 (all criteria are 1) to 125 (all criteria are
5). RPN grows with increasing of risk.
4.Acceptance level shall be specified in advance.
If RPN <Acceptance level, risk is low and no further
So FMEA method compares incomparable and is not
correct in principle.
Examples
Examples of FMEA application for two events with
airplane are shown in Table 1.

Delay of plane and Crash are equivalent by FMEA!
FMEA application to pharma gives similar results.
Inspections and Mine of delayed action
ICH Q9 (Part III of EU GMP) says that it helps
manufacture and inspector.
How it helps manufacture?
Does it help to construct process flow charts, to
find critical points, to draw HVAC, water treatment
and other schemes? They all shall be in the design!
Risk analysis: Myths, confusions
and real sense
Cleanroom and GMP Consulting
Dr. Alexander Fedotov is Managing Director of company “Invar-project” in Moscow
Russia, that has more than 20 years of experience on cleanroom/GMP design,
construction and testing.
He is author of several books on cleanrooms and GMP in Russian and author of many
articles on important issues like:
• Cleanroom standardization: where does it go?
• Energy saving in cleanrooms
• Air cleanliness for sterile production: statistics of particles concentration and
recommendation to improve normative documents
• Quality assurance vs ISO 9000 standards and other paper on risk analysis is one
of them.
So inspector observes not primary documents
(water treatment schemes, batch records etc.), but
secondary ones, i.e. papers that reflect primary
sources only partly.
A fundamental danger is hidden in this approach!
Inspector makes conclusion on compliance of
manufacture to GMP requirements not on primary
documents, he observes their interpretation.
But GMP set requirements to primary documents,
not to interpretation, that can be not objective.
It cannot be allowed to evaluate manufacture by
extracts from documents or comments, especially
made by manufacture under control.
This is a Delayed-action Mine!
History of Risk analysis
The paper describes how and why formal methods
of risk analysis appeared, why they are not in use in
high-tech responsible industries and why migrated
to food and pharma applications.
Rational sense of risk analysis
Rick analysis has rational sense. For this one must
have deep knowledge on the subject. No general
artificial tools are needed if knowledge is present. In
contrary, mathematical juggling with numbers will
bring wrong result if knowledge is absent.
The paper describes simple recommendations on

risk analysis for existing and new facilities.
Conclusion
GMP rules appeared 50 years ago. At first they were
clear and transparent. Further editions added a
lot of cloudy and confusing texts with zero use for
quality.
Risk analysis is the next step.
It is time to clean GMP from husk and create high
quality normative document.

Blue commented: “The Disability
Discrimination Act did much to facilitate the
less able bodied, the taller and the shorter
presenter but industry seemed to forget
that being hidden from the world behind

“With the M-Power Lectern, allowing students
to see and be seen during school assemblies
or presentations is so simple. The push of a
button lowers or raises the lectern to the ideal
height for any user without disabling any of
the internal infrastructure.”
The lecterns are available in both metal or
wood and come with two anti-vibration
microphone mountings. All cabling is tidily
enclosed within the column of the lectern.
An energy efficient LED reading light is also
part of the package. The range of materials
and finishes allows the company to offer
any colour of powder coating on the metal
lectern and any colour and grain finish on the
wooden model. Adding connection facilities
to the standard model allows the use of
computer screens for preview, touch screen
use and a range of connectivity that includes
VGA, HDMI, CAT5 and video in component or
composite forms.
Asked to discuss plans for the future of the
business, Blue concluded: “Launching a new

the number of actual sales received at the
Education Show 2014 has proven that the
M-Power lectern, with its powered raise and
lower facility, is massively ahead of anything
in the marketplace at this time. In fact, taking
into account all of its added features, it is
completely unique – nobody else can provide
this level connectivity options, combined with
the rise and fall technology.
“Later this year, we will be launching new
products including the N-Able height
adjustable display cabinet, as well as a range
of loudspeakers built to match our oak
products, but that have been scientifically
engineered to produce the full range of the

Attwater & Sons Ltd.
Attwater & Sons Ltd, a world class
manufacturer of industrial laminates,
composite materials and machined
components has invested in an upgrade
to its high voltage testing facility which
will allow the team to put all its materials
through their paces.
A new oil tank has been installed that can
be configured to run a variety of tests,
including maximum voltage capable and
sustained voltage without failure, with a
peak voltage of 100kV as standard going
up to 200kV where required.
The tank is a replacement for Attwater’s
previous unit, which was successfully used
to test a wide range of material formats
to various different test methods. This
was originally installed in 1964 and the
upgrade was commissioned as part of a
wider project of improving the Company’s
testing facilities.
Typical control tests available will include
flatwise electric strength and edgewise
breakdown. The system is easily reconfigurable to accommodate nonstandard material formats.
Improved performance means that the
facility can operate on less energy and
requires less oil to run, meaning that it is
also much greener.
Matt D'Arcy, Attwater’s Technical
Development Engineer, said: “The new
facility not only presents better and
more accurate testing, but will run more
efficiently than the old set-up.
“We will be buying and disposing of
less oil now, which is great for both the
environment and our bottom line, plus it
will be more straightforward to operate –
even the new electrodes are lighter and
easier to handle.”

Oils & Lubrication News
Increased output and reduced
costs in soft drinks production
An increase in machine reliability and the
improvement of lubrication management
practices in order to maximise output
in one of their plants was the objective
of a globally active soft drink producer
when they approached tribology expert
Klüber Lubrication. One of the plant's
seven bottling lines was chosen for
the improvement project. Analysis
was undertaken and this developed a
comprehensive lubrication plan. Following
implementation mechanical breakdown
was reduced, while output increased
significantly.
Increased production output
The plant operates on a three-shift system,
24 hours a day. Theoretical filler speed of
the bottling line is 24,000 bottles per hour.
Prior to consulting Klüber Lubrication,
utilisation was 55%: 1,760 cases were
bottled per hour, equalling 42,240 cases
a day. Klüber Lubrication went ahead
with its proven KlüberEfficiencySupport
package. Within nine months, production
loss due to machine downtime was
reduced from 7.4% to 2.5%, resulting in a
substantial increase of production output:
throughput increased to 72%, equalling
2,304 cases per hour, or 55,296 cases a day
– an increase by roughly 13,000 cases or
32% a day.
The increased production capability
enabled rapid response to order and
delivery schedules and a reduced unit cost
of manufacture. In addition, the number
of different lubricants was decreased
from formerly 47 to 26, resulting in
lower storage costs as well as a reduced
risk of lubricant mix-up; all without
compromising lubricant quality and
standards.
Implementation in practice
The comprehensive approach of
KlüberEfficiencySupport includes the
lubrication of all equipment throughout
the entire bottling line. Klüber Lubrication
proceeded in several steps. Based on a
comprehensive pre-audit, the objectives
to be achieved within a time frame
of 12 months were fixed. The exact
requirements of all persons involved in
the lubrication process were precisely
defined for the first time. In addition,
intensive training sessions on lubrication
matters took place. All this resulted
in increased lubricant awareness and
increased beverage safety.
A comprehensive lubrication plan and
a food-grade lubrication regime for all
lubrication points were implemented.
Oil analyses were conducted as part of
preventative maintenance programme.
In addition, storage conditions for
the lubricants were improved. Klüber
Lubrication also with an HACCP audit
(Hazard Analysis and Critical Control
Points) by implementing only ISO21469
manufacturing site H1 lubricants. Constant
monitoring during the adjustment period
ensured that all measures were fully
implemented and, if need be,adjusted.
Conclusion
This case illustrates the significant
influence lubrication has on the efficiency
of machinery. Typical operating cost
reductions for a food manufacturing plant
can be more than £100,000 per annum.
Implementation time for an advanced
lubrication program is approximately six
months, with payback in nine to twelve
months. For many food processors
it’s worthwhile to partner with Klüber
Lubrication in order to analyse and adapt
lubrication management practices to
reduce costs and increase productivity.

How a cement manufacturer
considerably reduced his operating costs
Energy consumption and maintenance of air
compressors are major elements of operating costs
in the cement industry. This recent example shows
how changing over to a highly efficient compressor
oil increases energy efficiency and extends
maintenance intervals. A leading manufacturer of
cement and related products wanted to increase
the efficiency of his oil-injected screw compressors
and asked the lubricant specialists from Klüber
Lubrication for advice.
and measured
operating
temperature,
energy and
lubricant
consumptions.
After two months, both compressors were cleaned
thoroughly and operation began using Klüber
Summit SH-46.
In this case, the oil change intervals with mineral oil
were 4,000 hours. Klüber Lubrication recommended
to change over to Klüber Summit SH-46, an air
compressor oil based on a synthetic hydrocarbon
mixture, which facilitates oil change intervals of up
to 10,000 operating hours. Klüber Summit SH-46
offers high evaporation stability, ensuring clean
compressed air and reduced cleaning costs while
avoiding gumming and unplanned downtime.
The lifetime of oil filters and separators increases
with reduced oxidation residues, contributing to
considerably lower maintenance costs.
When the measurement results were analysed, it
was found that the efficiency of the compressors
increased significantly when operating with
Klüber Summit SH-46. Operating temperature was
reduced from 96°C to 86°C and overall costs were
reduced by 2,000 euros per year per compressor
due to energy savings, longer oil filter life, reduced
lubricant consumption and maintenance costs.
The plant operates approximately 50 compressors
and thus saves around 100,000 euro per year with
synthetic lubricants. The customer decided to use
Klüber Summit SH-46 also for air compressors in
their other plants.
The cement manufacturer performed comparative
tests over a period of time. They operated selected
compressors with a mineral oil-based lubricant

On the right track with customised solutions:
Klüber Lubrication at the InnoTrans 2014 in Berlin
Powerful speciality lubricants for highly reliable rail traffic
ONE of the world’s leading lubricant specialists will
showcased new products which are industrially
efficient, environmentally friendly and cost-effective
at Inno Trans 2014 in Berlin.
As rail assumes greater importance for industrial and
passenger transport, the demands on rolling stock
and networks is under increasing pressure to perform
and scrutiny to be robust, eco-efficient and safe.
Klüber Lubrication has developed a diverse
portfolio of products that can be customised to
ensure trains and rails work reliably in all weather
conditions. With products that maintain and protect
equipment from train doors through traction
motors or brakes to the entire railway infrastructure
Klüber Lubrication is one of the few organisations
to offer customised solutions.
In addition to future proofing rolling stock
and infrastructure for commercial reasons,
increasingly important to operators is the need to
be environmentaly focussed. Thomas Kamprath,
Market Manager for Rail at Klüber Lubrication said;
"When developing lubricants for the rail sector,
Klüber Lubrication is especially focused on making
them environmentally friendly. This is of particular
importance for friction points where the contact
with water or the ground cannot be ruled out."
As well as being biodegradable, Klüber Lubrication’
pioneering products are designed to deliver greater
protection for longer meaning fewer applications
therefore adding to the eco-efficiency of each
product. The company also strives through
its holistic approach to solutions to mitigate
regular overuse and provide a seamless service to
customers.
The Klüber Lubrication technical team presented
its comprehensive range of powerful speciality
lubricants for the railway industry under the
motto ‘Get on the right track with our customised
solutions’ at the InnoTrans 2014 in Berlin.
An overview of new developments
Klüberrail ALO 32-250 is a new special lubricant
for overhead power lines, which is highly adhesive
to prevent dripping. Highly resistant to water, it
delivers reliable lubrication between the current
collector and the line, leading to lower wear and
hence longer relubrication intervals. Klüberrail
ALO 32 250 also helps reduce overhead line noise
and vibration. The new speciality lubricant is
biodegradable and therefore eco-friendly.
Fully synthetic high-performance gear oil
Klübersynth GE 4 75 W 90 for railway applications
is a fully synthetic high-performance gear oil with
high scuffing load capacity and micropitting
resistance. The base oil's pronounced shear stability
prevents the lubricant film from collapsing even
in the standards DIN 25201 and VDI 2230. This
was confirmed by comprehensive tests performed
with M 16x 100 – 8.8 screws on the screw test rig.
Especially for screws that have to be removed for
equipment inspections it is important that they can
be undone also after a longer period of operation.
This is ensured by the very good resistance to water
and media of STABURAGS NBU 30 PTM.”
under high loads, which is essential to protect both
teeth and rolling bearings. Besides good protection
against corrosion and wear, the oil offers good
low-temperature behaviour as well as a high
resistance to ageing and oxidation, which leads to
considerably less frequent oil changes becoming
necessary. Klübersynth GE 4 75 W 90 is approved by
several gear manufacturers like IG Watteeuw, Voith
Turbo, Siemens-Flender and by the German railway
operator Deutsche Bahn.
STABURAGS NBU 30 PTM is a water-resistant
assembly lubricant containing solid lubricants.
In the rail industry, it is frequently used in bogie
applications. “For the preload force of screw
connections, the total friction co-efficient plays a
decisive role,” Thomas Kamprath explains. “Screws
lubricated with STABURAGS NBU 30 PTM have a
friction co-efficient of 0.09 <µ> 0.14, as stipulated

The wheel flange lubricant Klüberrail LEA 62-2000
ensures good wear protection for wheels and
rails and reduces stick-slip effects on curves to
reduce noise. The fluid grease provides excellent
adhesion, making sure it stays on the wheel, even
at high speeds. Furthermore, it offers very good
water resistance. Klüberrail LEA 62 2000 is rapidly
biodegradable according to OECD 301 F.
Klüberrail AL 32-3000 is a synthetic biodegradable
speciality lubricant for setting railway points with
small forces even at temperatures as low as -30°. It
combines very good resistance to water with good
corrosion protection and a high resistance to UV
radiation, which helps extend relubrication intervals
considerably.

Would you like to

when away from

For some ¼million
children and adults,
this is often the reality, because venues are not properly
accessible or inclusive.
A correctly-designed and specified Changing Place toilet
overcomes those issues, making a location accessible
to anyone who needs a carer when going to the toilet,
giving them back their dignity, and improving hygiene.
With more space than a conventional wheelchairaccessible WC (12m2), a Changing Places toilet further
includes, at least, a peninsular toilet, hoist, adult-sized
height adjustable changing bench, washbasin and
privacy screen. As a result, the user can toilet, and be

Infrarad Limited shortlisted for two industry awards in 2014
Infrarad Limited has been shortlisted for two
industry awards in 2014 with products in the
running for the Electrical Industry Awards and
the House Beautiful Awards reinforcing Infrarad’s
position as infrared brand of choice.
Infrarad Limited offers four infrared radiators;
the Contract, Curve, Designer and Slimline Power
Heater. Stylish, good looking and highly efficient,
they consume half the energy required to run
conventional radiators. They use radiant heat;
the energy is emitted in the form of infrared rays
which heat only the solid objects they land on
including the occupants of the room which then
raises the room temperature.
This means that, whereas a traditional method
of calculating a standard room’s requirement for
heat is based on 50Wm3, with infrared radiators
only 25Wm3 is required. Because the Infrarad units
generate radiant heat rather than convection, they
are more efficient and do not create a stuffiness
inside the room. If a room needs 2KW of standard
gas and electric convector radiators, then with
infrared, it will only need a 1KW radiant model.
The capital cost of Infrarad‘s radiators is lower
than traditional radiators and boilers, and the
cost of installation is considerably less.

Bringing warehousing buyers and sellers together Contract growing projects
are flourishing
UKWA is Britain’s leading trade organisation
representing the third party logistics
(3PL) sector. The Association has over 650
member companies operating nearly 10
million square metres of warehousing from
around 2000 depots across the UK.
While UKWA membership is comprised
predominantly of third party warehousing
and logistics service providers, the
Association’s membership is not restricted
to companies operating in the third party
logistics and warehousing sectors and
this means that retailers, manufacturers
and wholesalers are free to join UKWA. In
addition, UKWA now welcomes members
from outside the United Kingdom's borders
into its membership.
The company’s mission is to protect the
interests and represent the views of its
member companies at the local, national
and international level; to promote best
practice in the logistics industry, and
to support member companies in the
development of their businesses.
With demands for just-in-time delivery on

Langley Tailors solution for
North London Estate
Langley Waterproofing Systems Ltd, the
national roofing and waterproofing expert,
has completed more than 12,500m2 of roof
refurbishment works at a North London
housing estate.
Working in partnership with their approved
contractor, Keepmoat Regeneration Ltd,
Langley used their experience, specialist
design and reporting services to provide
individual cost-effective solutions to
40 separate roof areas earmarked for
refurbishment at Broadwater Farm in
Harringey.
Individual surveys and core sampling were
conducted at each of the 40 areas across
nine blocks, with detailed reports and
specifications drawn up for each. Langley’s
high-performance TA-20 Flat Roofing
bituminous felt membrane system was
selected as the most appropriate system
to act as the basis point for all areas and
provided the overall finish throughout.
Working in this way enabled Langley to
take into account the varying conditions
of all of the existing waterproofing and
create the bespoke specifications which is
far more effective than a ‘one-stop’ system
applied across the estate.
The ambitious project used a combination
of full roof strip-ups and the overlaying
of existing roof covering, where the
roofs condition were deemed acceptable,
providing a number of cost saving benefits.

The new Robohand G100 Grippers Stressed out fleet managers get
helping hand from Volvo
Robohand, a DE-STA-CO brand, introduces the G100
Series blue line of pneumatic parallel grippers. The G100
Series is designed to provide machine builders and
OEMs with higher-quality, low-maintenance grippers for
cost-sensitive applications. The G100 Series is priced the
same as comparable competing grippers, but is built to
higher standards to deliver longer-lasting performance
with reduced warranty claims.
New Volvo Car Business
Centre takes the pressure
off time-poor company car
managers with on-call tailored
advice from dedicated expert
support team.
The Robohand G100 Series has been engineered for
reliability. The grippers’ shielded design protects all
mechanisms and internal linkages from environmental
contaminants, providing continuous smooth rack and
pinion operation with reduced maintenance.
Series gripper family provides substantial benefits.
Twenty different models are available to provide high
grip force with stroke options from 5mm to 50mm.
The G100 gripper actuation speed of 60ms for small
grippers is twice as fast as competitive products,
enabling end customers to improve productivity by
speeding up their production lines.
Robohand’s G100 Series grippers include an extended
jaw option to support finger interchangeability with
third-party grippers. Existing user-designed fingers
can be removed from a high-maintenance third-party
gripper and re-installed on a G100 Series gripper. This
makes it simple for OEMs to substitute G100 Series
grippers in existing machines with minimal design time
and resources.

Charging ahead with
electric bus project
Earlier this year, electrical installers EIC
approached MWA Technology to supply
electricity panel meters for EON’s Nottingham
Electric Bus Project. Meters were required
to gather data on the consumption of
electricity at the “Charging Bollards” at two
of Nottingham Council’s bus terminals;
Sherwood and Queen’s Drive.
With the old, manual system suffering from
transcription errors and consuming extensive
management time when cleansing data, the
expertise and wealth of knowledge offered
by MWA Technology’s Mel Greenfield and
Andrew Brain was welcomed.
Having reviewed the requirements of the
project’s switchboard, Andrew and Mel
concluded that a Multicube Meter system
provided the best solution. As Andrew Brain
explained, “The Multicube Modular Meter
system is designed for applications where
multiple meters are needed. It provides a high
density system with simplified wiring and
many advanced features, its modular design
allow for future expansion, greater flexibility,
offers massive space saving benefits and
the auto-rotation feature allows the meter
to correct any current incorrectly installed
transformers.”
recommendations were submitted to the
projects managers, EON and Nottingham
Council, with both agreeing to the proposed
automated system. Subsequently, following
extensive meetings, it soon became apparent
that more would be required of the system
than was contained in the original brief.
Of the key benefits, Andrew Brain goes on to
say “It’s possible
to save up to
50% per metered
point as well as
enjoying up to
80% reductions
in cabling,
connection and
space; all of which
were essential
requirements of
this project.”
EON also wanted to identify what bus was
at which charger, for what duration and the
quantity of energy consumed. To deliver these
requirements, MWA Technology brought
in trusted contacts EGS who, as specialist
IT solution designers, manufacturers and
integrators, possess extensive expertise in
similar software requirements for this type of
project.

Tape Application LINPAC Elite tray picks
Made Easy
up its 1st award
Tape application does not need to be
a sticky, tedious, seemingly unending
task that consumes precious time that
could be better spent on other more
value-adding activities. Why should
three people be doing what one
person can comfortably accomplish
alone? The right amount of
automation will free up resources and
speed up production while making
the tape application process a little
more enjoyable at the same time.
We produce standard machines for
applying tape to flat surfaces as
well as custom systems for various
industries. Our standard X-treme Light
and X-treme PRO tape application
systems have been designed to
eliminate the annoying problems that
require frequent service and interrupt
production (i.e. air pressure problems,
moving sensors from head to head,
time-consuming adjustment for thicker
products, inability to quickly adjust
roller pressure and blade angle, and
frequent component breakage and
replacement).
The Rfresh Elite® tray for meat and
fish products by LINPAC Packaging
has scooped its first award. The
LINPAC team was presented with
a PackTheFuture Award, which
recognises sustainability in plastic
packaging, at a ceremony held
during Interpack in Dusseldorf.
Rfresh Elite claimed its award in
the Ecodesign category in which
judges considered factors such as
recyclability, source reduction and
weight reduction.
The super lightweight, mono-
material Rfresh Elite tray uses
a new unique, patented sealant
on the tray flange to create a
secure seal with the lidding
film, removing the need for the
industry standard laminated PE
base film and creating a crystal
clear tray which is 100% recyclable
at the end of its service life – a
breakthrough in tray packaging
design.

the 13 and 16 July, Home
& Gift Show 2014 is the
seasonal round-up of the best
in design-led and everyday
gifts, homewares, jewellery
& fashion accessories and
greetings & stationery. With
more than 750 exhibitors, the
exhibition reaffirmed itself as “the retailer’s favourite
buying event.”
Highlighting the Home & Gift Show’s year-on-year
growth, 30% of this year’s exhibitors were new to the
event. Designers and companies exhibited thousands
of products as diverse as cushions and linens, beauty
creams, jewellery and handbags, pottery and handmade
greeting cards.
The historic spa town of Harrogate is easily accessible
by car, train, bus or plane and, with a host of hotels,
planning an overnight visit could hardly be easier. Next
year’s show will take place between 19 and 22 July and
will inevitably be bigger, bolder and better than any of
the shows before. The Home & Gift Show is strictly a
trade-only show.

ooo… it’s peel & sardine
peel & sardine were very pleased
to take up their regular stand in
the Design Point 1 marquee for the
Home & Gift show in Harrogate this
year. Having exhibited there for the
last 10 years we always see Home &
Gift as one of our key shows.
The feel of Home & Gift is very
different to other shows. Its setting
encourages a more laid back
approach... customers take their
time to look round and love to chat
as they place orders... with maybe a
glass of Pimms in between tents if
you feel that way inclined. We always
use the timing of the show to launch
new products and preview stock we
have coming in for Christmas.
This year, we had a great reaction
to our new designs of keepsake tins
& ceramic versions of our hanging
hearts as well as the pre-order
products such as our lockable
journals, money cubes and metal
hanging signs. We will be back next
year to enjoy the sunshine and the
fish & chips.

EnviroPure Food Waste Decomposition
Systems
Food waste represents the largest
part of our refuse that currently
is still being sent to landfill. Every
day, institutional and commercial
kitchens across the UK, along with
supermarkets and food producers,
generate thousands of tonnes of
costly food waste.
To tackle this problem, USA based
EnviroPure Systems has developed
a fully automated, hyper-accelerated
food waste decomposition system
providing rapid break down and
elimination of food waste onsite at the source. First Choice
Environmental Solutions is bringing
the EPW system to the UK market.
The EnviroPure system offers a
simple, easy to implement and
economically attractive way to
dispose of food waste: self-contained,
small footprint, aerobic food waste
decomposition system that eliminates
food waste on-site where it is
generated. Essentially, the system
breaks down the food waste in a
submersed water-base environment
producing a grey water bi-product
that meets or exceeds regulatory
standards for safe disposal into
municipal waste water systems. The
result: complete elimination of food
waste in 24 hours.
