On Sunday, March 28, 2010, ISC Adopt-aSchool students presented the 2nd Annual
ISC Benefit Fashion Show to help the
community of Ilha Rasa (Guaraqueçaba
region). The event raised R$ 2,690.00,
which will be used entirely to improve the
education and quality of life for the island
community.
Following tryouts, ISC student models
were chosen for the show which also
included several secondary teachers and
secondary school principal, Ms. Mello.
For more than 10 years, ISC students
have traveled to Ilha Rasa, bringing food,
clothes, school supplies and toys. They
also give educational lectures about
hygiene, health and dental care along
with dental students from Universidade
Positivo,
medical
students
from
Faculdade Evangélica do Paraná, and
ISC parents.

No domingo, dia 28 de março de
2010, os alunos do projeto “Adopt-aSchool” (Adote uma Escola) do ISC
organizaram e apresentaram o 2º
Desfile de Moda Beneficente em prol
da comunidade carente da Ilha Rasa
(região de Guaraqueçaba). O evento
arrecadou a quantia de R$ 2.690,00 que
será inteiramente revertida à educação
e melhoria da qualidade de vida da
comunidade da ilha.
Depois dos testes, os alunos foram
selecionados para o desfile que também
incluiu vários professores e a diretora do
Secondary, Elizabeth Mello.
Há mais de 10 anos, grupos de alunos do
ISC visitam a Ilha Rasa levando comida,
roupas, materiais escolares e brinquedos.

DESFILE DE MODA BENEFICENTE 2010
This year, ISC students worked in partnership with
Shopping Mueller and Crowne Plaza Curitiba, who
sponsored and helped organize the fashion show. The
brands Maria Filó, TOK, Espaço Fashion, Spezzato Teen,
Brooksfield and Brooksfield Junior donated clothing for
the show. Hair styling and make-up was donated by
Torriton Taunay. The printing of posters was donated by
Rosa de Bassi. Prizes for the raffle were donated by O
Boticário, Lafayette, Mundo Egípcio, and Cacau Brasil.
The show was organized by the ISC Adopt-a-School
club under the guidance of CAS Coordinator, Ms. Zélia
Torres Albuquerque. The officers of the club are:

Palestras educativas sobre higiene e saúde bucal são
feitas em parceria com os alunos de Odontologia da
Universidade Positivo e alunos residentes de Medicina
da Faculdade Evangélica do Paraná, além de pais do
ISC.
Este ano, os alunos do ISC contaram com a parceria
do Shopping Mueller e do Hotel Crowne Plaza Curitiba,
que patrocinaram e ajudaram a organizar o desfile.
As marcas Maria Filó, TOK, Espaço Fashion, Spezzato
Teen, Brooksfield e Brooksfield Junior colocaram suas
roupas à disposição para o desfile. Os penteados e

Explorers Living Timeline
História Viva: Linha do Tempo dos Desbravadores
100 dias de aula
Counting, counting, and counting. That’s what the ECC
children did on February, 24 th when they celebrated 100
days of school.
Contar, contar e contar. Foi isso que as crianças do ECC
fizeram no dia 24 de fevereiro, quando comemoraram
100 dias de aula.
The children shared their collections of 100 items with
their friends and teachers. There were all kinds of
collections, such as cars, stickers, buttons and seeds.
Todos mostraram a seus amigos e professores suas
coleções de 100 itens. Havia todos os tipos de coleções
como carrinhos, adesivos, botões e sementes.
The traditional cupcakes were made and decorated by
the children during their cooking classes. After exercising
100 times they were finally eaten, and all the cupcakes
displayed in the form of number 100 were gone.
Os tradicionais “cupcakes” (bolinhos) foram decorados
pelas crianças durante a aula de culinária. Depois de
se exercitarem 100 vezes, todos se deliciaram com os
bolinhos de chocolate, que foram dispostos na forma do
número 100 em cima de uma mesa.
At the end of the first semester, students in grade 5
presented an “Explorers Living Timeline” to their fellow
students and parents. Each student assumed the role of
a different explorer and was positioned in a chronological
timeline setting. With the push of a button, each 'explorer'
came to life and gave a 2-minute presentation about
themselves, telling what he/she accomplished as an
explorer, when and where the expeditions were made,
the importance of the exploration and a few fun facts
about the explorer.

No fim do primeiro semestre, os alunos da 5ª série
apresentaram para seus colegas e pais uma “Linha do
Tempo dos Desbravadores”. Cada aluno escolheu e
interpretou um explorador e ficou posicionado ao longo
de uma linha cronológica. Ao se apertar um botão, o
“explorador” ganhava vida e fazia uma apresentação
de dois minutos sobre si mesmo, contando os seus
grandes feitos, para onde e quando fez suas expedições,
a importância de suas explorações e alguns fatos
divertidos de sua vida.
Wildcat Color Clash
Color Clash
ISC’s third annual Wildcat Color Clash was held on the
last day of the first semester and was a huge success.
Color Clash has developed into a day that students look
forward to with much anticipation.
A terceira edição do Wildcat Color Clash aconteceu no
último dia de aulas do primeiro semestre e foi um grande
sucesso. Todos os anos, os alunos aguardam o dia do
Color Clash com muita animação.
With goals of creating teamwork, sportsmanship, spirit,
and safety while having fun, fun, fun, the morning’s
activities began in the gym with a rousing Spirit Rally.
The games began immediately after, with the four teams
consisting of students from all grades participating
in events such as the toilet plunger relay, a wet sand
relay and many other fun events. All the activities were
designed to include all ages. Not only did all grade 1
to 12 students participate but also all faculty and staff
members as each had a part to play in the running of
the games. ISC seniors played an active role in leading
the activities and making sure that all students were
involved.
Com o objetivo de desenvolver trabalho em equipe,
espírito esportivo e segurança enquanto se divertem
muito, as atividades da manhã iniciaram no ginásio
com um entusiasmado desfile com grito de guerra. A
gincana começou logo em seguida, com a participação
dos quatro times de alunos de todas as séries em
brincadeiras como a corrida do desentupidor de
privada, o revezamento na areia molhada e outros
jogos divertidos. As atividades foram elaboradas para
incluir todas as idades. Não só participaram todos os
alunos da 1ª à 12ª série, como também os professores
e funcionários, pois cada um tinha a sua função durante
os jogos. Os alunos da 12ª série desempenharam um
papel fundamental ao liderar as atividades e garantir a
participação de todos.
The activities ended with a “dance to the rhythm,”
fruitsicles and slideshow in the gym.

It was great to see our Elementary soccer teams out on
the Field! Coaches Goga and Ms. Kennedy have been
doing an amazing job with the Elementary athletes
throughout the year. We certainly have competitive
soccer players who want to win, but also I was
exceptionally impressed with their sportsmanship on
the field! This semester the Elementary Festival will
be on May 22nd, hope all can come and cheer on our
Elementary Wildcats!

their determination by playing soccer in heavy rain and
playing basketball with passion until the end of each

Torneio de Vôlei do Clube Curitibano
This past November, the Curitibano Club hosted a
Volleyball and Mini-Volleyball Tournament. ISC‘s girls
volleyball and girls and boys mini-volleyball teams,
coached by Rogerio Romano, participated in this fun
tournament along with teams from the Curitibano Club,
Paraná Club, Colégio Bom Jesus and Colégio Novo
Ateneu.
Em novembro último, o Clube Curitibano sediou um
Torneio de Vôlei e Minivôlei, do qual participaram as
equipes de Voleibol Feminino e Minivôlei Masculino e
Feminino do ISC, guiadas pelo treinador Rogério Romano
e que competiram com os times do Clube Curitibano,
Paraná Clube, Colégio Bom Jesus e do Colégio Novo
Ateneu.
The tournament was a huge success and fun for all
the participants. According to Coach Rogério, the ISC
athletes represented ISC brilliantly and were the high
spot of the games, especially the 2nd, 3 rd and 5 th graders.
O torneio foi um grande sucesso e todos os participantes
puderam se divertir. Segundo o treinador Rogério,
os alunos do ISC representaram a escola de maneira
brilhante e foram os grandes destaques nos jogos,
principalmente os alunos de 2º e 3º anos e da 5ª série.

Dia da Amizade
Takase, an ISC 6 th grader, took first place honors in
the U13 division while younger sister, Rina, an ISC
4th grader, placed third at a tournament held recently
at the Belém New Golf Club in Porto Alegre. This
tournament is the first step in the National Youth
Golf Tour, which is the main Brazilian Circuit for
young golfers. The tour championship is based on
4 tournaments with competing golfers receiving
national pre-youth and juvenile ranking based on the
point scale.

Takase, aluno da 6ª série do ISC, ficou em primeiro
lugar na divisão U13 enquanto sua irmã mais nova,
Rina, aluna da 4ª série do ISC, ficou em terceiro
lugar em um torneio que aconteceu recentemente no
Belém Novo Golf Club em Porto Alegre. Esse torneio
é o primeiro passo para o Tour Nacional de Golfe
Juvenil, que é o principal circuito brasileiro para
jovens golfistas. O campenato do Tour é composto de
4 torneios e os golfistas são posicionados de acordo
com a sua pontuação.

Valentine’s
It’s always very cute to watch the little children
demonstrate how much they care about their
colleagues. For Valentine’s Day, the ECC children
made cards for their friends and exchanged little gifts
while dressed in red and pick clothes.
É sempre uma graça observar como as crianças
pequenas demonstram seu carinho pelos amigos.
Para o Valentine’s Day (Dia da Amizade) eles fizeram
cartões para os amigos e trocaram presentinhos, todos
devidamente vestidos de rosa e vermelho.

Students Debate the Future of France
Alunos da Turma de História Mundial Debatem o Futuro da França

A Visit to the Neighborhood Pond
Visita ao lago da vizinhança
To introduce a unit on ecology, students visited the
pond in the backyard of the neighbors to the school.
They observed the wildlife and evidence of wildlife
they saw in and around the pond. Students recorded
their observations in their science notebooks, and later
observed water from the pond in the microscopes.
Para iniciar uma matéria sobre ecologia, os alunos
visitaram o lago no quintal da casa vizinha ao ISC.
Eles observaram a natureza e as evidências de vida
que puderam identificar em volta do lago. Os alunos
registraram suas observações nos seus cadernos de
ciências e, mais tarde, estudaram a água do lago através
de um microscópio.
Using the Microscope to Examine the pH Balance
Students practiced their science process skills recently
by examining pH. They tested a variety of objects, from
acidic limes to basic cleaning solutions and learned the
difference between acids and bases. They made pH
scales in their notebook, made predictions about the pH
of different substances, then tested their predictions.
Usando o microscópio para medir o equilíbrio do pH
Recentemente, os alunos exercitaram suas habilidades
de processo científico ao estudar o pH. Eles testaram
diferentes líquidos, do limão ácido ao produto de
limpeza básico e aprenderam sobre a diferença entre
ácidos e bases. Fizeram também uma escala de pH nos

In 1789, the National Constituent Assembly of France
voted to approve The Declaration of Rights of Man
and Citizen. This document promised constitutional
protection to the citizens of France, but the exact
interpretation of the document remained an open
question. Historically, we know that the assembly
divided itself into three factions and debated the political
direction of France. What is the role of the King? Who
should be allowed to vote? What is the definition of a
citizen?
ISC's 9 th grade history class embraced France's dilemma
and debated this critical turning point in World History.
Students were divided into three groups with each group
representing one of the three factions and debated the
merits of the following options:

assumiu o dilema da França e debateu este momento
decisivo da História Mundial. Os alunos foram divididos
em três grupos e cada grupo representou uma das três
facções e debateu o valor das três seguintes opções:
• Conserve the power of the king;
• Manter o poder do rei;
• Liberate France from the old regime;
• Libertar a França do antigo regime;
• Create a constitutional monarchy.
• Criar uma monarquia constitucional.
By role playing and passionate debating, judged by
members of the faculty, ISC's 9th grade resolved France's
future!

Em 1789, a Assembleia Nacional Constituinte Francesa
votou a adoção da Declaração dos Direitos do Homem
e do Cidadão. Esse documento prometia a proteção
constitucional aos cidadãos franceses, porém a
interpretação exata deste documento permaneceu uma
questão em aberto. Historicamente, sabemos que a
assembleia dividiu-se em três grupos e debateu a direção
política da França. Qual seria o papel do Rei? Quem teria
direito ao voto? Qual é a definição de cidadão?
Interpretando personagens e debatendo fervorosamente
enquanto eram avaliados por membros do corpo
docente, os alunos da 9ª série do ISC conseguiram
resolver o futuro da França!

Declamação de Poesia na 4ª Série
Poetry is a shared experience, a gift of time. A poem
recreates a feeling in one’s life. Through poetry we can
feel what other people have felt. In the 4 th grade poetry
unit, students did exactly this. They wrote poems, read
poems, memorized poems, presented and performed
poems; sharing their own experiences with others.
Poesia é uma experiência compartilhada, um presente
atemporal. Um poema recria um sentimento na vida
de alguém. Através da poesia podemos sentir o que
outras pessoas sentiram. Durante o módulo de poesia
da 4ª série, os alunos fizeram exatamente isso. Eles
escreveram, leram, memorizaram, apresentaram e
encenaram suas poesias, compartilhando com a turma
suas próprias experiências.
Congratulations to the Christian American School of
São Paulo (PACA) on their 1st place finish in the AASSA

A total of ten teams competed in the two-day tournament
which consisted of 9 matches followed by the semifinals and final match for the championship. In addition

Franklin, represented ISC in the tournament and finished
with a record of 4 wins and 5 losses. The highlight of
the tournament for ISC came when they decisively beat
Graded in their final match of the tournament by a score
of 15 to 9.
The tournament provided an invaluable opportunity
for all the students to network and meet international
students from other cities and also have loads of fun by
watching games and answering hundreds of questions
on subjects as diverse as Math, Physics and Chemistry,
History, Biology, English, Foreign Languages, Religion,
Music, Sports, and Pop Culture.

com 4 vitórias e 5 derrotas. O melhor momento do
torneio para o ISC foi quando a equipe venceu a Graded
na última partida do campeonato por 15 a 9.
O torneio deu aos alunos uma ótima oportunidade para
se relacionarem e conhecerem alunos internacionais
de outras cidades e também de se divertirem assistindo
aos jogos e respondendo milhares de perguntas sobre
assuntos diversos como matemática, física, química,
história, biologia, inglês, línguas estrangeiras, religião,
música, esportes e cultura popular.
The ISC Garden
O Jardim do ISC

plants are selected in a responsible, educated and
calculated manner to provide symbiosis with the climate,
topography and ecology of Curitiba. In addition to ISC
students learning how their food is produced, the ISC
Garden provides many other curriculum connections
across all school subjects and throughout all grade
levels. As educators we look forward to our students
making those connections in a practical, hands-on
approach.
Recent research shows that child obesity and diabetes
are still on the rise. Globally, school vegetable gardens
are serving an ever more important role in nurturing
lifelong healthy eating habits. The practice of gardening
gives children a firsthand experience to appreciate the
process of plant growth and the rewards of harvesting.
It is also our hope that the vegetables and fruit
harvested from our garden will be donated to some of
our neighbors in need. Students would then be able to
put a face on the issue of hunger as well as experience
the power of taking action to improve our community.
We believe the ISC garden will provide opportunities for
community involvement and social development for our
students, their families and our neighbors, as well as
learning valuable lessons in environmental stewardship
and social responsibility while enhancing our academics
at ISC.
After months of planning and preparation we are very
pleased to announce that the ISC Garden is now a reality.
Two garden beds have been constructed on the Santa
Felicidade campus behind the Multi-Purpose Theater.
Students in Ms. Saatkamp’s 9th grade Geometry class
are currently concluding a unit using their math skills to
design and create their own garden beds. It is our hope
that some of the student designs can be incorporated
into building additional garden beds on the site.
The ISC Garden is being developed by our school’s
first Garden Club. The Garden Club, along with teacher
advisors Ms. Bertille Koehler and Mr. Cesar Daniel,
began meeting weekly after school on Mondays to
follow through on the plans for the new ISC garden.
This included the preparation and planting of a garden
plot for vegetables, herbs, fruit trees and flowers by ISC
students. The garden project is student driven, faculty
guided and administration monitored. The garden
will serve as a “living laboratory” for the study of plant
biology, gardening and the observation of insects.
It will also give ISC students the opportunity to be
involved in advanced biological and scientific research,
community outreach and comprehensive development
of such things as soil science, composting, and irrigation
methodology. The research by students will be important
to ensure that the methods of gardening and types of

Após meses de planejamento e preparação estamos
felizes em poder anunciar que o Jardim do ISC agora é
uma realidade. Dois canteiros foram construídos na sede
de Santa Felicidade atrás do Auditório MP. Os alunos de
Geometria da 9ª série, orientados pela Ms. Saatkamp,
estão no momento concluindo uma unidade usando
seus conhecimentos matemáticos para desenharem e
criarem seus próprios canteiros. Esperamos que alguns
dos desenhos possam ser incorporados na construção
de mais canteiros no jardim.
Next year the garden will be used by elementary grade
levels to support their respective units related to plants.
In the meantime, we hope parents of students in grades
3-8 will encourage their children to join the current
garden members for the weekly ISC Garden Club
every Monday after school. It is still not too late to join
this unique after school activity. We would like to thank
ISC parent Marina Poggi for donating plants to the ISC
Garden project. Contact Paul Combs, the elementary
school principal at ISC, if you would like to also donate
plans or trees to the new ISC garden or would like to sign
up your child to join our new Garden Club. We see our
garden as a metaphor for all of life and we anticipate
great things to grow!

de alimentação saudáveis que a criança leve pela
vida toda. A prática da jardinagem dá às crianças uma
experiência em primeira mão para apreciar o processo
de crescimento de uma planta e a recompensa da
colheita. Também esperamos que as verduras e frutas
colhidas no nosso jardim possam ajudar alguns de
nossos vizinhos mais necessitados. Dessa maneira,
os alunos poderiam ter um contato concreto com a
questão da fome, além de vivenciarem o poder de agir
para melhorar nossa comunidade. Acreditamos que o
Jardim do ISC dará oportunidades para o envolvimento
da comunidade e o desenvolvimento social dos nossos
alunos, de suas famílias e de nossos vizinhos, além
de promover lições valiosas em proteção ambiental
e responsabilidade social ao mesmo tempo em que
melhora o nosso programa curricular no ISC.
No ano que vem o Jardim será usado por alunos
do Elementary para apoiar o ensino das unidades
relacionadas a plantas. Neste meio tempo, esperamos
que os pais dos alunos de 3º ano a 8ª série encoragem
seus filhos a se juntarem aos atuais membros do
Clube para as reuniões semanais nas segundas-feiras.
Não é tarde demais para participar dessa atividade
extracurricular única! Agradecemos à mãe Marina Poggi

The National Honor Society is a U.S. based organization
with chapters throughout the world, established in the
1920’s to recognize outstanding high school and middle
school students. More than just an organization that
recognizes academic achievement, NHS and NJHS also
honors students who have demonstrated excellence in
Leadership, Service, Character and Citizenship.
In order to be eligible for induction, ISC students must
have and maintain a grade point average of 85%. From
the pool of eligible students, an ISC faculty advisory
committee met before the ceremony to select the
students for induction into NHS & NJHS based on their
academic record, character, citizenship, service and
leadership qualities demonstrated at school.
The NHS induction ceremony included special music
by Ann-Kathrin Klein on the flute followed later in the
ceremony by the song Fingerprints played by Gabe
Taboada on the drums and Pamela Stürmer on the
guitar, with vocals by Cristiane Heinrichs and Taciana
Pereira. The Chapter History was presented by NHS
Vice-president, Alexandra Malgarini with history teacher,
Mr. George Miller giving the keynote speech. Following
the candle lighting ceremony and presentation of
certificates, NHS President Cristiane Heinrichs led the
new inductees in the NHS pledge.
The NJHS induction ceremony, which followed shortly
after the NHS ceremony, featured a processional and
recessional played by the middle school band and
directed by Ms. Mônica Heinrichs, followed later in the
ceremony by the song, A World of Differences, sung
by Camila and Javiera Diaz Fuenzalida and Mr. Paul
Combs. The chapter history was presented by Mr.
Combs and Mr. Eli Bomfim was the keynote speaker.
Following the candle lighting ceremony and presentation
of certificates, NHS President Cristiane Heinrichs led the
new inductees in the NJHS pledge.
Advisors for NHS are Mr. Eli Bomfim and Ms. Mônica
Heinrichs. NJHS advisor is Ms. Maryann Kuhn.
Following is an extract from Mr. Miller’s speech in which
he connects one of the 5 pillars of NHS to each of the 5
NHS inductees:
“Five Pillars - Five new members of NHS. All of you exude
these five characteristics. I have chosen to elaborate on
one pillar for each of you.
Ricardo Pereira: Leadership
Ricardo, look around the stage. Do you notice anything
unique about your being there? Yes, you are the only
male; surrounded by a group of beautiful young ladies,
now that’s LEADERSHIP! Seriously, Ricardo, you are a
leader and a role model, especially for the other young
men in our school. On the soccer pitch, on the basketball
court, in the classroom, in the hallways, everywhere you
go, people look at what you do. Lead them well.

A National Honor Society é uma organização com
sede nos EUA e com sucursais pelo mundo todo,
estabelecida nos anos 20 em reconhecimento a alunos
que se destacam no high e middle school. Mais do que
apenas uma organização que reconhece o desempenho
acadêmico, o NHS e o NJHS também homenageiam
alunos que demonstram excelência em Liderança,
Serviço Social, Caráter e Cidadania.
Para concorrer, os alunos do ISC devem manter uma
média de aproveitamento de 85%. Um comitê de
supervisão do corpo docente do ISC reuniu-se antes da
cerimônia para eleger, dentre os candidatos, os alunos
que seriam aceitos para o NHS & NJHS, baseando-se
nos critérios de desempenho acadêmico, caráter,
cidadania, serviço social e liderança demonstrados no
colégio.
A cerimônia de ingresso no NHS incluiu performances
musicais de Ann-Kathrin Klein na flauta seguida mais

Projeto Flat Stanley
You want to make 10 dozen standard-size cookies
as specified by a recipe that requires 16oz of butter,
4 eggs, 3 cups of flour, and 4 cups of sugar. In taking
inventory of your supplies, you find that you have 16oz
of butter, 6 eggs, and 3 cups each of flour and sugar.
Which ingredient will limit the number of cookies you can
make?
First Graders at International School of Curitiba have a
special privilege in becoming global citizens. They have
been joining the Flat Stanley Project for 7 years! It is one
of our ISC First Grade traditions.
The project is based on the book Flat Stanley by Jeff
Brown. It is the story of a boy who was flattened when
a bulletin board next to his bed fell on him. Although
Stanley loved taking trips, his family could not afford it.
After becoming flat, Stanley could now travel around the
world for the price of a stamp in a paper envelope!
After reading the book and becoming acquainted with
the story, our students make paper Flat Stanleys and we
mail them to countries around the world, where people
are asked to treat them as visiting guests; take pictures,
take them everywhere they can, and return them to ISC.
Then the fun begins! When the Stanleys arrive back
at ISC in their envelopes, we launch the project and
children plot Flat Stanley’s travels on our big world map.
Within the rich learning environment of our classrooms,
this amazing project provides opportunities for students
to make connections with people all around the world.
They learn a lot about other cultures, languages, food,
and different traditions. In the envelopes when our
Stanleys come back, hosts usually send maps, letters,
postcards, coins, flags, books, sweets, and other
goodies like pencils and chocolate bars. Last month we
received a Flat Stanley from Israel and he brought with
him salt from the Dead Sea, leaves from an olive tree,
and a handmade little camel made of olive tree wood.
The children were delighted!

Curitiba têm um privilégio especial em seu caminho
para se tornarem cidadãos globalizados. Há 7 anos eles
participam do Projeto Flat Stanley, que já se tornou uma
das tradições do 1º ano do ISC.
O Projeto é baseado no livro Flat Stanley, de Jeff Brown,
e conta a história de um garoto que foi achatado por
um quadro de avisos que ficava perto de sua cama.
Stanley adorava viajar, porém a sua família não tinha
muito dinheiro. Após ser achatado, Stanley pôde passar
a viajar o mundo dentro de um envelope de papel pelo
preço de um selo!

is becoming more aware of the fact that chemistry is
much more than what he/she studies in the classroom.
Chemistry has applications all around us in our everyday
world. The chocolate chip cookie lab provides students
with an everyday application of the concept of limiting
reagents to the real life examples of baking. Students not
only have fun making and eating cookies but are also
reinforcing chemistry concepts.

dá aos alunos a oportunidade de aplicar na realidade o
conceito de limitação de reagentes. Os alunos não só se
divertem fazendo e comendo os cookies, mas também
reforçam e fixam conceitos teóricos da química.
Após lerem o livro e conhecerem a história, nossos
alunos então fazem Stanleys de papel e os enviam pelo
correio para diferentes países. Quando o destinatário
recebe a carta, pedimos que o tratem como um hóspede,
tirando fotos e levando-o a todos os lugares possíveis,
e que depois o reenviem ao ISC. Aí começa a diversão!
Quando os envelopes com os Stanleys voltam para o
ISC, nós iniciamos o projeto e as crianças marcam as
viagens do Flat Stanley em um grande mapa do mundo.
Dentro do rico ambiente educativo das nossas salas de
aula, esse maravilhoso projeto proporciona aos alunos a
oportunidade de se conectarem com pessoas ao redor
do mundo. Eles aprendem sobre diferentes culturas,
línguas, comidas e tradições. Nos envelopes em que os
Stanleys voltam, nossos anfitriões geralmente enviam
mapas, cartas, cartões-postais, moedas, bandeiras,
livros, doces e outras coisinhas como lápis e chocolate.
No mês passado nós recebemos um Flat Stanley de
Israel, que trouxe com ele sal do Mar Morto, folhas de
uma oliveira, e um pequeno camelo feito à mão a partir
da madeira da oliveira. As crianças ficaram extasiadas!

High School drama students delivered a poignant
message in their moving performance of the Pulitzer
Prize winning play, "The Effect of Gamma Rays on ManIn-The-Moon Marigolds". The play featured three ISC
students, Meghan Andrzejewski, Julia Wuestefeld, and
Katie Silva. Ninth grader Meghan Andrzejewski won the
hearts of the audience in her role of Tillie, a young girl
who struggled to escape from the chaos of her home.
Education became the focus of her dream for a better
life as she strove to succeed in the school science fair
and receive positive recognition for her man-in-themoon marigolds. Eleventh grader, Julia Wuestefeld, was
very convincing in her role as Tillie's mother Beatrice,
a bitter and cruel woman who was desperate for her
daughters' love. The third main character in the play,
Ruth, was played by 11th grader Katie Silva who delivered
an emotionally charged performance. As an epileptic,
she alternated between supporting her sister and
creating discord with their mother. On the night of the
school science fair, Ruth insulted their mother, setting off
a chain of events that brought the play to its troubling
conclusion. Senior Nick Ortiz added a touch of comedy
to this otherwise very serious play by playing Nanny,
the elderly woman who shared the home with the three
women. Although he didn’t speak a word, his presence
was enough to lighten the atmosphere.

comovente apresentação da peça ganhadora do Prêmio
Pulitzer, "O Efeito dos Raios Gama nas Margaridas
do Campo". A peça foi protagonizada por três alunas
do ISC, Meghan Andrzejewski, Julia Wuestefeld e
Katie Silva. A aluna da 9ª série, Meghan Andrzejewski,
conquistou os corações da plateia no papel de Tillie,
uma jovem que tenta escapar do caos que é a sua vida
familiar. O estudo torna-se o foco do seu sonho por uma
vida melhor quando ela tenta se destacar na feira de
ciências do colégio e ser reconhecida pelo seu trabalho
com as margaridas do campo. Julia Wuestefeld, da
11ª série, foi muito convincente no papel de Beatrice,
a mãe de Tillie, uma mulher amarga e cruel, mas que
anseia pelo amor de suas filhas. Katie Silva, da 11ª série,
numa performance carregada de emoção, interpretou
a terceira personagem da peça, Ruth. Ela é epitélica e
alterna seu comportamento entre apoiar sua irmã e criar
discórdia entre ela e a mãe. Na noite da feira de ciências,
Ruth insulta a mãe, iniciando uma série de eventos que
levam a peça a um final perturbador. O aluno da 12ª,
Nicholas Ortiz, contribuiu com um toque cômico para a
peça ao interpretar Nanny, uma senhora de idade que
divide a casa com as outras três mulheres. Apesar de
não ter falas, a sua presença foi o suficiente para aliviar o
tom pesado da história.

Holiday Programs
Festejos de Fim de Ano
Ninety “packages” eagerly awaited their parents
underneath the Christmas tree at the Vila Schaffer when
ECC students performed their annual Holiday program
in December. They sang a selection of Christmas tree
songs, including The Magic of a Christmas Tree, Time
to Decorate the Tree, Oh Christmas Tree, and Rockin’
Around the Christmas Tree, ending the program with an
enthusiastic, We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
The ECC program was directed by ECC music teacher,
Ms. Marilene Nascimento.
