WEEKLY BULLETIN – 19TH-23RD SEPTEMBER 2016 We are approaching the end of the second week of the new school year and I am very pleased that we have made a very good and positive start. It´s pleasing to note that the members that are new to our community (staff and students) have been made to feel welcome and they seem to have settled in very quickly. I have been privileged to have been able to visit several classrooms over the last week. I have witnessed some outstanding teaching from our staff and TAs and learning from our students. I have been impressed by what I have seen, but also by the cheerful atmosphere, which contributes to our success. TH WEEKLY BULLETIN 12 -16 TH SEPTEMBER 2016 PAGE 2 ENGLISH WORKSHOPS – FORMS 4 TO 10 On the 21st and 22nd of September the school is delighted to be hosting the writer, comedian and journalist, Dave Smith, who will be conducting a series of creative writing workshops for Forms Four to Ten. This will be a great opportunity for pupils to build on the English curriculum and experience 'lively writing workshops that inspire, educate and entertain, whilst encouraging students to express themselves and overcome the fear of the blank page.' More details can be found on the website: http://www.wordsmith-features.com/ Mark Weeks, Secondary Head of English PRIMARY NOTICES Dear Parents, As the end of the second week comes to an end we can look back on a very positive start to this school year. I have been very impressed with the pupils’ enthusiasm and attitude so far this year. After initial assessment activities the teachers will now be fully into the curriculum for the term; like all terms, there are many activities planned over the coming weeks so please do keep up to date with the school calendar and the individual class teachers announcements. We are continuing to ensure that there is an empty “Lost Property” box by the world map; to help with this task please do ensure that your child’s clothing is named. I would also like to thank the Form 1 parents for allowing their children to enter the Primary building themselves on a morning. Though it may be easier to help your child take off their coat and hang up their bag it is a vital skill that we train the children to achieve this task independently. Many Form 5 pupils took part in House Captain elections on Tuesday and the pupils listened to some very well prepared and passionate election speeches. We now have a very strong and enthusiastic Primary pupil leadership team that can help the student council plan and promote many wonderful events throughout this year. The Primary Pastoral report will list the House Captains for this year. Mark Evans, Head of Primary PRIMARY PASTORAL WEEKLY REPORT The Primary House Captain election took place on Tuesday this week. Many Form 5 pupils tried out for House Captain and there were some really excellent presentations. I am pleased to announce the winners: Windsor: Captains: Tiago Basto and Maria Frederica Furtado Guimarães and Vice-Captain: Jack Graham, Lancaster: Captains: Jorge Eastley Soares and Beatriz Pinho and Vice Captain: Anastasia Gómez de Aguero, Bragança: Captain: Guilheme Lopes and Carlota Carrington and Vice Captain: Francisco Rocha Ferreira. In other pastoral news, each class has elected two pupil council representatives to represent their class at regular pupil council meetings. TH WEEKLY BULLETIN 12 -16 TH SEPTEMBER 2016 PAGE 3 For the week ending 9th September the house point totals were: Windsor 834, Lancaster 882 and Bragança 914. It has been lovely to hear the feedback from our new arrivals expressing how well they have been received and how much they like their new surroundings. The use of mobile phones and tablets is still under trial with the majority of students using them sensibly, not to film or take photos. We have also asked our secondary students not to share with primary and asked them not to use their phones when primary students are on the field. This is each break time and the first part of lunch. Although it has only been a few days since this was implemented it appears to be going well. This week we also held a Meet and Greet for Form 11 & 12 Parents. It was an opportunity to meet parents as well as hear about some of their concerns and feedback. Relating to IB students in F12; they are busy preparing their Extended Essays and completing the preparations for their Theory of Knowledge presentations on 26th September. These are important documents and contribute to the extra points added on to the IB after their subject scores have been finalized. Lunch queues have reduced considerably this week as students have adjusted to the timetable and the canteen has a better feel for student appetites. Students who have permission to leave at break times still need to remember to sign in and out. Those without permission need to remember to bring in a signed permission form so that the list at the gate can be updated. TH WEEKLY BULLETIN 12 -16 TH SEPTEMBER 2016 PAGE 4 Next week we have a visiting author to look forward to. Forms 6 to 8 will be receiving some top writing tips and coaching from David Smith on Wednesday and Thursday Some interesting information about top students in Portugal suggesting that they are considering opting for a university education overseas can be found at this location: http://zap.aeiou.pt/melhor-aluno-entrar-na-universidade-do-porto-desistiu-vai-estrangeiro-129769 Our former F12s have been leaving for universities in the UK and Europe and others will be starting in Portuguese universities next week. A full list of destinations will be published next week. October/ November Examinations The October/November examination schedule is now available. If your child has an examination, please note it may be scheduled during the half-term break. We cannot reschedule these examinations; they are set by IGCSE and IB. All students entered have received their statement of entry and the timetable is on display around the school. Baseline Testing Baseline testing for Forms 6, 9 and 11 will take place over the next fortnight. This testing is designed to help your child's teachers better understand how your child learns including identifying their areas of strength and areas for development. These online tests are designed and marked by the University of Durham's Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring. If you would like to know more, do visit their website at http://www.cem.org/.
