BLACK YELLOW MAGENTA CYAN Page 118 .go Now you can get the city’s freshest vegetables, dairies, flowers, meat and fish in any of the European-looking open markets. Just fifteen minutes away, some of the best restaurants in town (Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Gotham), a super-bookstore (Barnes & Noble), some of the priciest stores and some of the best bargains (DSW and Filene’s). After shopping your fill, check out the Coffee Shop, a meeting point of models and photographers. NOUVEAU RICHE In 1993, when I went to Harlem to shoot a story for TV Cultura on the district’s rebirth, you could buy an old house for $100 thousand, spend another $200 thousand on renovations and sell it for US$ 600 thousand. Now an apartment in many of the Harlem’s various areas goes for over $ 1 million. The neighborhood doesn’t know whether to fight or celebrate the invasion of wealthy people of all skin colors. CHANGE OF HABIT Times Square changed most of all. A shopping mall of crime, drugs and prostitution of the 1960s, now it’s difficult to make your way through the crowds on matinee afternoons and after theater, at 11 PM, children and teens are everywhere. HOLLYWOOD NO HUDSON For marketing purposes, real state agents have renamed old areas, and now we have Alphabet City, Flatiron District, Meatpacking, Garment District, Murray Hill, NoHo, SoHo, Nolita, Tribeca and others in Harlem. And we still haven’t set foot out of Manhattan, but in New York, I love You, the setting for most stories is Brooklyn, a district that now regains its fame. SUBTITLES In the ‘90s, immigrants saved Queens and pulled Nova York out of economic crisis. Now, ethnicities change every five blocks. Here, Greeks; there. Brazilians. Cross the street and smell Indians and Pakistanis cooking curry. When the Dutch founded it in the 17th Century, one of them wrote of the cosmopolitan nature of a city where he identified 18 different languages. Now, more than 180 are spoken in Queens schools alone. 10.06.2008 09:20
