Em março deste ano o Institute for Public Policy, baseado em Londres,
publicou um importante relatório dedicado ao futuro do ensino superior
intitulado: “An avalanche is coming: higher education and the revolution
ahead”.
Os autores, de reconhecida reputação internacional, aplicaram ao ensino
superior a metáfora da montanha branca, coberta de neve, onde aparentemente reina uma tranquilidade imutável, reforçada pela imaculada
brancura da paisagem. Contudo, todos sabemos que existem movimentos
invisíveis, debaixo da superfície, capazes de produzir terríveis avalanches,
com efeitos devastadores e, nesses momentos, a pior atitude é ficar no
mesmo lugar!
Esta mesma situação aplica-se, atualmente, às universidades em todo o
mundo. Por isso, estamos atentos ao que está acontecer a nível global
para podermos, na NOVA, continuar a manter os padrões de excelente
qualidade no ensino, na investigação e nas relações com a comunidade
que nos caracterizam e que são inquestionavelmente reconhecidos em
Portugal e no mundo.
Uma coisa é certa: o modelo tradicional de universidade que tanto contribuiu
para o sucesso da Europa e dos Estados Unidos da América, durante todo
o século XX, está em mudança e, para a universidade ter o mesmo impacto
social no século XXI, vai ter de mudar radicalmente a sua missão e muitos
dos seus objetivos.
É neste panorama de mudança que a NOVA se mantém como uma universidade de sucesso, mas em transformação. Nos últimos anos efetuámos
significativas alterações curriculares e expandimos o ensino em inglês.
Reforçámos a investigação, com especial ênfase para o apoio à formação
multidisciplinar e integrada dos estudantes de doutoramento, através da
recém-criada Doctoral School. Acompanhámos, com legítimo orgulho, o
sucesso do percurso profissional dos nossos graduados. Os nossos estudantes participaram ativamente na “vida da NOVA”, através do Conselho
de Estudantes, onde têm assento as presidências das associações de
estudantes.
Vivemos, em Portugal, um período muito penoso e sabemos bem como
tem sido difícil continuar a fazer mais e melhor, mas não desistimos! Para
isso contamos com toda a comunidade académica da NOVA, professores,
investigadores, funcionários e estudantes.
Esta brochura é, simplesmente, um bilhete-de-visita para quem nos queira
conhecer melhor mas não hesitem em nos abordar no site da NOVA e nas
redes sociais e, como sempre, através de contactos pessoais.
In March this year, the London-based Institute for Public Policy, published a
report focusing on the future of Higher Education entitled: “An avalanche is
coming: higher education and the revolution ahead”.
In this report, the internationally renowned authors used a white mountain
metaphor to characterize the traditional university: a snow-covered and
apparently peaceful mountainside that looks solid. However, we all know that
invisible changes take place under the surface and these movements can
cause avalanches with devastating effects. In such moments the worst attitude
is to stand still!
Today, this metaphor can be applied to universities across the globe.
Therefore, at NOVA, we are very aware of these global changes because
we want to maintain the excellence in teaching, research and service to
community that define us and is unquestionably recognized in Portugal and
abroad.
One thing is certain: the traditional university that contributed for the success
of Europe and the United States of America during the 20th century is
changing. To keep the same social impact in the 21st century, the university
has to radically modify its mission and most of its objectives.
NOVA is a successful university but times are changing and adaptations are
essential. In the last few years, significant developments in the curricular offer
took place and the number of courses taught in english increased. Research
was reinforced, with emphasis on the support for multidisciplinary training
and integration of PhD students, through the newly created Doctoral School.
We have proudly traced the success of our alumni in their professional
activities. Our students actively participated in the “life of NOVA”, through the
Council of Students which includes the presidents of the student´s unions.
We are experiencing, in Portugal, rather challenging times and it has been
difficult to keep doing more and better, but we do not give up! To succeed,
we rely on the academic community of NOVA, professors, researchers,
non-faculty staff and students.
This publication gives a glimpse of NOVA for those who want to know us
better but do not hesitate to browse our website and the social networks
and, as always, using personal contacts.
For all, and especially for those who are now joining NOVA I wish a very
successful academic year of 2013/2014.

O Conselho Geral de uma Universidade não é um mero conselho consultivo
mas, segundo a Lei, o mais importante dos órgãos de governação. No caso
da NOVA, e de acordo com os Estatutos desta, o Conselho compõe-se de
14 membros internos, incluindo três estudantes, e sete membros externos
de entre os quais se elege o Presidente.
According to the Law, the General Council of a University is the most important
of its governance bodies and not a mere consultative council. According
to the Statutes of NOVA, the Council is composed of 14 internal members
including 3 students, and 7 external members, one of which is elected as
its President.
Não só repousa sobre o Conselho a responsabilidade de eleger o Reitor,
como apreciar os atos dos restantes órgãos de governação, aprovar os
quantitativos das propinas, orçamentos e contas e, bem assim, os planos
e relatórios tanto anuais como estratégicos.
The Council elects the Rector, monitors the activity of the other governance
bodies, approves the student fees, the budgets, as well as the annual and
strategic reports and activity plans.
Ao longo do primeiro quadriénio do funcionamento do Conselho, tornou-se evidente a sua eficácia como elemento disciplinador do governo da
Universidade. Não só se aprovaram as várias contas de gerência como
os respetivos planos e orçamentos, e se notaram evidentes melhorias de
ordem técnica na gestão da Instituição.
Em 2012, o processo de aperfeiçoamento continuou: aprovou-se, nomeadamente, o Plano Estratégico para 2012-16 e foram certificadas as contas
consolidadas de 2010 e 2011. Teve-se ainda a satisfação de acompanhar
a implementação do referido Plano.
Infelizmente, e por razões que são estranhas à Universidade, ainda não
foram criadas condições para a adoção pela NOVA do regime de fundação
nele previsto, mas entraram em funcionamento outras componentes
desse Plano, nomeadamente a Escola Doutoral, e deram-se passos no
sentido da internacionalização, do desenvolvimento da investigação e da
formação de recursos humanos, bem como da angariação de receitas.
Em nome do Conselho, agradeço ao Magnífico Reitor e à Equipa Reitoral,
bem como aos Diretores das Unidades Orgânicas, o clima de compreensão
de que nos têm rodeado e o apoio que nos vêm dando. Saúdo, por outro lado,
os professores, estudantes e funcionários, aos quais dirijo uma palavra de
esperança e amizade, sem esquecer as caloiras e caloiros a quem desejo
as maiores felicidades.
In the course of its first four years of activity, the role of the General Council
as a regulatory element in the University´s governance became evident. As
the financial reports and the University plans and budgets were approved,
significant technical improvements in the institution management were
acknowledged.
In 2012, the improvement process was pursued with the approval of the
Strategic Plan 2012-2016 and of the financial reports of 2010 and 2011. The
General Council had also the opportunity to monitor the implementation of
the Strategic Plan.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond the University control, the legal
conditions were not met to adopt the foundation statute as recommended
by the Strategic Plan. Nevertheless, other strategic goals were achieved,
such as the implementation of the Doctoral School, and important steps
were taken to improve internationalization, research excellence, human
resources formation and fundraising.
On behalf of the Council, I would like to thank the Rector Magnificus and
the Rectoral Team, as well as the Deans of the Academic Units for their
cooperation and continued support. I want to greet professors, students
and staff with a word of hope and friendship, and to address a special word
to the freshmen to whom I wish a lot of success.

A Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA) identifica-se como uma instituição

Iniciou a sua atividade em janeiro de 2013, com uma parceria académica com o
Imperial College London, uma colaboração institucional com a Fundação Oriente e o
suporte da Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
Launched on January 2013; it has an academic partnership with the Imperial College
London, an institutional collaboration with Fundação Oriente and is sponsored by
Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
Visa promover boas práticas académicas e reforçar a formação pessoal e profissional
dos doutorandos e orientadores, através de programas de formação de competências
transversais.
It aims at promoting good academic practices and providing additional training to PhD
students and supervisors, enhancing their personal and professional development.

A Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (FCT), localizada no Campus de
Caparica (30 ha), a sul de Lisboa, é uma das escolas públicas portuguesas
mais prestigiadas de ciências e de engenharia, desenvolvendo uma extensa
atividade de investigação, através de 18 centros reconhecidos pela Fundação
para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, envolvendo, de um total de 7 800, 1 600
estudantes de doutoramento e de mestrado.
Com 535 docentes e investigadores (90% doutorados) e 169 funcionários não
docentes, a FCT está estruturada em 14 Departamentos e oito Serviços de Apoio.
Ao abrigo do Programa Erasmus para a mobilidade de estudantes, a FCT
possui 280 acordos bilaterais com instituições europeias de Ensino Superior.
A FCT integra diversas parcerias com universidades estrangeiras, destacando-se a colaboração com o MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), a CMU
(Universidade de Carnegie Mellon) e a UTA (Universidade do Texas em Austin),
na oferta de programas doutorais e de estudos avançados. A FCT reestruturou
a sua abordagem de ensino, introduzindo em todos os cursos de Licenciatura
e de Mestrado Integrado o Perfil Curricular FCT, com o objetivo de dotar os seus
alunos de capacidades vitais para um rápido ingresso no mercado de trabalho,
tais como a formação em soft-skills. A formação em empreendedorismo
aumentou ainda mais o número de iniciativas empresariais dos estudantes e
docentes, levando à criação de spin-offs de sucesso, que contribuem para a
transferência de conhecimento e para a relevância social da sua investigação.
The Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT) is located at the Campus of
Caparica (30 ha), south of Lisbon.
FCT is one of the most prestigious public portuguese engineering and science
schools and it is engaged in extensive research activity developed in 18 research
centres recognized by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and involving
1 600 PhD and Master students of the total enrolment of 7 800.
With a total of 535 academic and research staff (90% holding a PhD) and 169
non-academic staff, FCT is organized in 14 Departments and eight Support
Services.
Under the Erasmus Programme for students’ mobility, FCT has established 280
agreements with European universities.
FCT partners with foreign universities such as Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT), University of Carnegie Mellon, University of Texas at Austin
and offers some of their advanced study programmes. FCT restructured the
undergraduate programs (1st cycle) and integrated masters (2nd cycle) by
implementing the FCT Curricular Profile, with the objective of endowing their
students with vital capacities for a quick labour market admission, such as soft
skills. The education in entrepreneurship increased the entrepreneurial drive of
students and professors, leading to the creation of many successful spin-offs,
that transfer knowledge to the market and help create value and social impact.

The FCT was essential for my career, allowing me to acquire solid technical skills and teaching me how to build a work culture made of rigour and
excellence.The proximity between students and professors was, without any doubt, the greatest factor of success. Associated with this important
aspect, the quality of equipment, that perfectly suited our needs and the concern about its continuous improvement, also played a decisive role.
A solid background was provided by an academic staff with extensive scientific expertise and recognized technical expertise achieved in the
business world. The quality of life on Campus was great, and in addition, it is close to one of the best beaches in the country.

Criada em 1977, a Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH) é
uma unidade interdisciplinar cujos objetivos de ensino e investigação se
caracterizam pela diversidade e criatividade de saberes. Situada no centro de
Lisboa, integra um total de 5 189 alunos, sendo 2 762 de licenciatura, 1 405
de mestrado e pós-graduação e 938 de doutoramento. O corpo docente
conta com 290 membros, na sua quase totalidade doutorados.
Founded in 1977, the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH)
(Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities) is an interdisciplinary unit with
teaching and research objectives, characterized by the diversity and creativity
of knowledge. Located near Lisbon city centre, it hosts a total of 5 189 students,
2 762 in undergraduate programmes, 1 405 in masters and 938 in PhD
programmes. It has 290 professors, almost all holding a PhD degree.
A FCSH disponibiliza 14 licenciaturas (duas das quais em horário pós-laboral),
durante as quais os alunos podem beneficiar de programas de mobilidade
ex.: Erasmus), que envolvem anualmente mais de 350 estudantes. Na formação
pós-graduada, oferece 11 cursos de pós-graduação, 48 cursos de mestrado e
23 de doutoramento, todos lecionados em regime pós-laboral.
FCSH offers 14 undergraduate programmes (two of them in after-work schedule),
during which students can benefit from mobility initiatives (e.g.: Erasmus),
annually involving more than 350 students. In graduate training, FCSH offers 11
postgraduate programmes, 48 masters and 23 PhD programmes, all provided
in after-work schedule.
A excelência na investigação em áreas das Ciências Sociais e Humanas,
uma das vocações da FCSH, é assegurada por 19 unidades de investigação
avaliadas pelos painéis internacionais da Fundação para a Ciência e a
Tecnologia – das quais duas com “Excelente” e 12 com “Muito Bom” - onde
trabalham mais de 600 investigadores. A Faculdade acolhe ainda 204 bolseiros
de doutoramento e 313 de pós-doutoramento.
The excellence of research in Social and Human Sciences, one of the missions
of FCSH, is assured by 19 research centres assessed by international panels
from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia – two of them rated as “Excellent”
and 12 as “Very Good” – that gather more than 600 researchers. The Faculty

Cátia Antunes | Lecturer | Leiden University
Licenciei-me em História na FCSH (1998). Obtive o meu doutoramento (2004) em História Económica e Social pela Universidade de Leiden.
Foi-me atribuído um financiamento de pós-doutoramento (2006) pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia e uma Fulbright Research Grant
(2007-2008) para a Universidade de Yale. Actualmente sou docente do Departamento de História da Universidade de Leiden, especializada
em história de redes multi-culturais de comércio e agência no período Moderno. Em Julho de 2012, foi-me atribuída uma bolsa do Conselho
Europeu de Investigação para o projeto Fighting Monopolies.
I obtained my degree in History from the FCSH (1998). I have a PhD (2004) in Economic and Social History from Leiden University and I was awarded
a postdoctoral grant by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (2006) and a Fulbright Research Grant for Yale University (2007-2008).
I am currently a lecturer at the History Department of Leiden University, specialized in cross-cultural business networks and free agency in the Early
Modern period. In July 2012, I was awarded a Starting Grant (for the research project Fighting Monopolies) by the European Research Council.

A Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (FCM) é uma unidade orgânica da
Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA), desde 1977. Tem 1 651 alunos de
pré-graduação (incluindo 86 em programas de mobilidade) e cerca de 800
alunos de pós-graduação. Conta com 392 docentes e investigadores, dos
quais 30% doutorados.
The Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (Faculty of Medical Sciences) is
Universidade NOVA de Lisboa’s (NOVA) medical school since 1977. With 1 651
undergraduate students (including 86 in mobility programmes), FCM has over
800 postgraduate students and 392 professors and researchers (30% of whom
with a PhD degree).
No ano letivo de 2013/2014 continuará a implementação do Novo Plano
de Estudos, de começo gradual no 1.º ano. O ensino clínico decorre em
instituições de saúde, públicas e privadas, articuladas com a FCM através
de protocolos homologados pelo Ministério da Saúde e pelo Ministério da
Educação e Ciência.
In 2011 we started the implementation of the New Curriculum, which will continue
in 2013/2014. The clinical teaching takes place in various health institutions
(public and private), partners of the medical school through protocols ratified by
the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science.
A FCM oferece um vasto leque de cursos e programas de pós-graduação e
investigação, contando com um número significativo de grupos de excelência
em biomedicina, investigação translacional, investigação clínica e epidemiologia
e serviços.
A abertura do novo pólo de investigação do Campus de Santana, para além
das melhorias às atividades pedagógicas (nova biblioteca e novo centro de
treino em competências clínicas), irá dar um contributo muito importante para
o desenvolvimento da investigação na Faculdade, em estreita colaboração
com o Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (CEDOC).
FCM offers a great diversity of postgraduate courses and programmes in different
health areas. FCM has a significant number of groups of excellence in biomedicine,
translational research, clinical research, and epidemiology and services.
The new research pole opening in Campus Santana will be an important contribution
to the development of the Faculty’s research, in close collaboration with the CEDOC
- Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (Research Centre on Chronic Diseases).
It will also provide improvements to educational activities, with the new library and
the new training center for clinical skills.

A Faculdade de Direito da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa foi fundada em 1996,
como “polo inovador no desenvolvimento da Ciência jurídica”. A escolha
alargada de disciplinas de opção e os cursos em áreas pouco exploradas
(Segurança, Desporto, Justiça, Arbitragem, Imigrantes) acentuam a distinção
da marca FDUNL.
O 1.º ciclo, além das disciplinas na área do Direito, abrange Ciências Sociais
e matérias instrumentais. O 2.º ciclo divide-se em Jurídicas Empresariais,
Forenses, Internacionais, Sociais e Direito Público, podendo os estudantes
escolher entre a elaboração de uma tese ou um relatório de estágio ou projeto,
abrangendo ainda a área do Direito e Segurança. O 3.º ciclo, implicando a
discussão pública do projeto de dissertação e a apresentação de um tema
ao SPEED (Seminário Permanente sobre o Estado e o Estudo do Direito),
permite ultrapassar a mera participação nos tradicionais seminários.
O CEDIS (Centro de Investigação & Desenvolvimento sobre Direito e
Sociedade), o Laboratório LRAL (Resolução de Litígios), a Antígona (Igualdade
e Discriminação), o CPIC (Concorrência e Propriedade Intelectual) têm
congregado a investigação de professores e doutorandos.
The Faculty of Law at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa was founded in 1996, in
order to challenge a rather conservative, traditional way of teaching and learning
law in Portugal.
The Faculty teaches three cycles (Bachelor, Master, PhD). The first takes eight
semesters, the second three and the third from eight up to ten. In all of them the
students are prepared both in core, compulsory subjects and in rather a wide
variety of optional courses.
In order to answer the growing demand by foreign students, some courses,
some seminars (European Master second semester courses, in cooperation
with Universidade de Coimbra) and theses supervision are carried out in English.
CEDIS is our main research centre. We host centres of public (community) service
which also carry out some teaching and research: RAL (Alternative Dispute
Resolution); ANTÍGONA (issues of discrimination, with a view to helping actual
or potential victims); CPIC (copyright and patents legal issues).

O Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical (IHMT) é uma jovem instituição
centenária, ímpar na academia portuguesa. Vocacionado inicialmente para
o estudo, ensino e clínica das doenças tropicais, evoluiu recentemente para
uma abordagem integrada que vai desde o nível molecular aos sistemas
globais de saúde, adotando, sem abandonar a sua vocação tropical, um
forte empenho na resolução dos problemas de saúde que, em todos os
continentes, afligem os mais pobres e os excluídos.
The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine – IHMT is a young centenary
institution, unique in the portuguese academy. Aimed initially at the study,
teaching and medical practice related to tropical diseases, IHMT has recently
evolved towards an integrated approach, ranging from the molecular level to
global health systems, adopting, without abandoning its tropical vocation, a
strong commitment to solving health problems that afflict the poorest and the
excluded in all continents.
Desde a sua origem, o instituto tem estado à frente da investigação das
grandes endemias tropicais, e estas linhas de trabalho continuam atuais,
reforçadas por estudos sobre tuberculose, viroses prevalentes nos trópicos,
saúde dos viajantes ou populações migrantes e sistemas de serviços de
saúde, que lhe emprestam um forte cariz internacional no âmbito de redes e
projetos em parceria.
Since its inception, the institute has been at the forefront of research directed at
tropical endemic diseases, and these lines are still part of its current work, reinforced
by research work on tuberculosis, several viruses prevalent in the tropics, travelers’
and migrant population’s health and health services systems, which confer to IHMT
a strong international character as part of networks and projects in partnership.
O trabalho de investigação está intimamente associado a programas de
doutoramento e mestrado, bem como à assessoria técnica a ministérios
da saúde, em Portugal e outros países. A qualidade do desempenho do
IHMT foi reconhecida pela OMS, quando nos atribuiu o estatuto de Centro
Colaborador para Políticas e Planeamento da Força de Trabalho em Saúde.
The research work is closely linked to several master and doctoral programmes,
but also through its technical assistance work to ministries of health in Portugal
and other countries. The quality of its performance was recognized by the WHO,
when assigned us the status of Collaborating Center for Health Workforce Policy
and Planning.

Assumi a direção política do Ministério da Saúde de Angola em 2008, depois de me licenciar em Medicina pela Universidade Agostinho Neto (1988),
tendo, posteriormente, enriquecido a minha formação na área da saúde com outros cursos, nomeadamente os de Gestão em Saúde Internacional
(1995) e o de Clínica de Doenças Tropicais (1993), ambos ministrados no Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical. Destas passagens pelo IHMT
nasceu o apreço e admiração pela sua qualidade científica e capacidade pedagógica, nasceram também amizades e relações profissionais, que
me levaram a incentivar o papel do IHMT como um parceiro do sistema de saúde angolano, na formação de quadros através dos seus programas
de mestrado e doutoramento em Lisboa, mas também através de cursos locais, oferecidos em várias localidades de Angola, de capacitação em
técnicas laboratoriais, de especialização em saúde pública, gestão de sistemas, serviços e recursos de saúde assim como na assessoria técnica
em áreas chave, como o desenvolvimento de recursos humanos em saúde.
I was appointed as Minister of Health of Angola in 2008, after graduating in Medicine from University Agostinho Neto (1988). Later I enhanced
my education in healthcare with other courses, including International Health Management (1995) and Tropical Diseases Practice (1993) at
the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. I could appreciate the scientific and pedagogical quality of IHMT and had the opportunity to
establish personal and professional relationships that resulted in partnerships of IHMT with the angolan health system: staff training in the
master and doctoral programmes in Lisbon, courses in Angola about laboratory techniques, public health, management of health systems and
health resources and technical advice on key areas, such as the development of human resources in health.

O Instituto Superior de Estatística e Gestão de Informação (ISEGI-NOVA)
da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa foi fundado em 1989 como resposta à
escassez de quadros superiores especialistas na gestão de informação e
à necessidade crescente de utilização de novas tecnologias de informação.
Instalado no Campus de Campolide, o ISEGI-NOVA apresenta infraestruturas
equipadas com as mais modernas tecnologias de informação e de suporte
ao ensino. Hoje, o ISEGI-NOVA proporciona educação de elevado nível a
mais de 700 alunos. A sua oferta inclui duas licenciaturas, seis mestrados,
incluindo um mestrado Erasmus Mundus e um mestrado duplo Europeu, um
doutoramento e diversas pós-graduações.
O ISEGI-NOVA desenvolve investigação de excelência nos domínios da ciência
e dos sistemas de informação. Como resultado desta atividade são produzidas
anualmente mais de uma centena de publicações internacionais de elevado
impacto e mais de 50 dissertações de mestrado e teses de doutoramento.
O ISEGI-NOVA tem igualmente uma forte ligação à sociedade, estabelecendo
protocolos e parcerias com mais de uma centena de instituições públicas e
privadas, para as quais desenvolve investigação aplicada, estudos, projetos
e formação avançada.
The NOVA School of Statistics and Information Management (ISEGI-NOVA) was
founded in 1989 in response to the shortage of senior specialists in information
management and the growing need for using new information technologies.
Installed on Campus Campolide, ISEGI-NOVA has an infrastructure equipped
with the most modern information and teaching support technologies. Today,
ISEGI-NOVA provides high level education to more than 700 students. The offer
includes two bachelor degrees, six master degrees, including an Erasmus
Mundus Master Course and a double degree European Master Course, a
doctorate and several postgraduate courses.
ISEGI-NOVA develops research of excellence in information science and
information systems. As a result of this activity annually produces over a hundred
high-impact international journal papers and more than 50 master dissertations
and doctoral theses.
ISEGI-NOVA also has a strong connection to society, having protocols and
partnerships with more than one hundred public and private institutions, for which
develops applied research, studies, projects and advanced training.
ISEGI-NOVA is member of the most prestigious association of schools in

Como aluna desde 2005, o ISEGI permitiu-me um enriquecimento tanto ao nível profissional como pessoal, acompanhando-me em diversas

acompanhamento das necessidades do mundo atual, permitiu-me ficar empregada ainda antes de terminar a licenciatura. Hoje, com cinco

O ITQB coordena um dos maiores Laboratórios Associados do país, que
inclui também o Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, o Instituto de Biologia
Experimental e Tecnológica e o Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas.
ITQB coordinates one of the largest “Laboratórios Associados” in Portugal,
which also includes the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, the Instituto de Biologia
Experimental e Tecnológica and the Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas.
O carácter multidisciplinar do ITQB torna-o num centro de referência para a
formação avançada de investigadores. Atualmente, acolhe 54 laboratórios
independentes, agrupados em cinco divisões de investigação, num total
de mais de 450 investigadores, com diferentes percursos e interesses
de investigação. Os investigadores usufruem de excelentes instalações,
equipamentos e serviços de apoio, alguns únicos no país.
ITQB’s highly multidisciplinary nature makes it a leading centre for the advanced
training of researchers in Portugal. Currently, it hosts 54 independent laboratories

A Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública (ENSP) é uma instituição vocacionada

Criada em 1966, a ENSP é uma instituição pioneira no ensino da saúde

The mission of the Social Welfare Services of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa
(SASNOVA) is to guarantee that no student is excluded from the university due
to financial difficulties, thus providing direct social support to 1st and 2nd cycle
students: Scholarships and Emergency Support.
Os SASNOVA concedem ainda apoios sociais indiretos a todos os alunos da
NOVA, nomeadamente:

Desporto | apoiando a presença de alunos em campeonatos universitários

Cultura | apoiando iniciativas de alunos e concebendo atividades próprias,
nomeadamente o Concurso de Fotografia da NOVA e o Festival NOVA Música;
Saúde | proporcionando consultas médicas de Clínica Geral, Psiquiatria,
Psicologia Clínica e de Nutrição.
Os SASNOVA são ainda responsáveis pela coordenação do Fundo de Apoio
Social da NOVA, constituído em 2013.
Os SASNOVA asseguram a gestão da marca NOVA UNIVERSITY, em
coordenação com a “Loja da Universidade”, promovendo a imagem da NOVA
através do merchandising.

This semester as an Erasmus student at Nova SBE I realized that there are more efficient ways of teaching through combining

EUROPEAN RESEARCH COUNCIL GRANTS
Elvira Fortunato, professora da FCT, diretora do Centro de Investigação em Materiais (CENIMAT) e do programa doutoral em Engenharia
de Micro e Nanotecnologias, desenvolveu trabalho pioneiro na área da eletrónica transparente, nomeadamente transístores de filme fino
baseados em óxidos semicondutores, tendo provado que estes materiais podem ser utilizados como verdadeiros semicondutores.
Em 2008 obteve uma Bolsa Avancada do ERC para o projeto Invisible.
Professor of Materials Science at FCT, director of the Materials Research Center (CENIMAT) and of the PhD program in Micro and
Nanotechnologies Engineering, Elvira Fortunato pioneered european research on transparent electronics, namely thin-film transistors based
on oxide semiconductors, demonstrating that oxide materials may be used as true semiconductors. In 2008 won an Advanced Grant for the
project Invisible.
Miguel Ferreira – professor da Nova SBE e titular da cátedra Banco BPI em Finanças – obteve em 2012 a primeira bolsa do ERC na área
de Economia e Gestão em Portugal, com o projeto Banca Universal, Controlo Empresarial e Crises. Esta bolsa – no valor de um milhão
e 200 mil euros – é o mais importante financiamento europeu para jovens investigadores. O projeto vai estudar as relações entre os bancos
universais e as empresas, e a forma como estas relações afetam o financiamento, investimento e desempenho da economia real.
BPI Professor of Finance at Nova SBE, Miguel Ferreira, was awarded in 2012 with the first grant from the European Research Council in the
area of Economics and Management in Portugal for the project Universal Banking, Corporate Control and Crisis. This 1.2 million euro
grant is the most important European funding for young researchers. The project explores the relations between universal banks and firms, and
how these relations affect the financing, investment and performance of the real economy.
Rodrigo Rodrigues é professor associado da FCT desde 2012. Anteriormente, liderou o grupo de sistemas fiáveis no Max Planck
Institute for Software Systems. O seu currículo inclui um prémio para o melhor artigo na conferência mais prestigiada na área de sistemas
computacionais, o Symposium on Operating Systems Principles, um prémio de reconhecimento especial do Departamento de Engenharia
Electrotécnica e Informática do MIT e, em 2012, a primeira bolsa ERC na área da Informática em Portugal com o projeto DependableCloud.
Associate professor at FCT since 2012, Rodrigo Rodrigues previously led the Dependable Systems Group at the Max Planck Institute for
Software Systems (MPI-SWS). He won the best paper award at the Symposium on Operating Systems Principles - the flagship conference in
computer systems, a special recognition award from MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and, in 2012, the first
ERC grant in the field of computer science in Portugal, for the project DependableCloud.
Mariana Gomes de Pinho, investigadora auxiliar do ITQB, ganhou uma bolsa ERC na área das Ciências da Vida. O projeto ProteinLocalization
vai investigar como é que as diferentes maquinarias moleculares que constroem a superfície da bactéria patogénica Staphylococcus aureus
se localizam no lugar correto da célula, de modo a que a estrutura da superfície permita à bactéria resistir aos antibióticos e estabelecer
infecções que constituem um importante problema de saúde.
The ITQB researcher Mariana Gomes de Pinho, won an ERC grant in Life Sciences. The project ProteinLocalization will investigate how
the different synthetic machineries that construct the surface of the pathogenic bacterium Staphylococcus aureus find their proper localization,
so that a correct surface is assembled, enabling bacteria to resist antibiotics and establish infections that are a relevant health problem.

Salva de Prata (Ordem dos Médicos de Angola), Medalha de Comandante da Ordem de Madagáscar e Medalha de Ouro da Saúde
Pública (Níger).
Luís Gomes Sambo is Regional Director of WHO for Africa. He qualified as a medical doctor from the Faculty of Medicine of the
University of Angola and obtained a Diploma of specialist in Public Health from the Portuguese Medical Association. He holds a PhD
degree in Management from the University of Hull. He was Vice-Minister of Health of Angola for five years. Dr. Sambo has several
publications in international scientific journals. The recognition of his contribution to public health includes the Certificate - Who’s
Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Kinshasa, Silver Plate award by the Angolan Medical
Association, Commandeur de l’Ordre de Madagascar and the ‘Médaille d’Or de la Santé Publique’ by the Republic of Niger.
Irene Fonseca tem dedicado a sua carreira à investigação, à divulgação e à promoção da Matemática, sendo, desde 1998,
Diretora do Center for Nonlinear Analysis na Universidade de Carnegie Mellon. A sua extensa atividade científica, pedagógica
e de liderança contribuiu para a recente eleição como Presidente da mais importante associação americana de Matemática
Aplicada - Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Foi condecorada com o grau de Grande Oficial da Ordem de Sant’Iago
da Espada, como reconhecimento da contribuição para o progresso científico na União Europeia, e recebeu, em 2004, o
Women of Distinction Award in Math and Technology.
Irene Fonseca has dedicated her career to research and to the promotion of Mathematics, and is, since 1998, Director of the Center
for Nonlinear Analysis at Carnegie Mellon University. Her extensive scientific and pedagogical work and leadership skills contributed
to the recent election as President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, America´s most prestigious scientific society
dedicated to Applied Mathematics. She was awarded the Portuguese Military Order of Sant’Iago da Espada, for her contributions to
scientific progress in the European Union, and received, in 2004, the Women of Distinction Award in Math and Technology.

Nam Pyo Suh é reconhecido na comunidade científica pelas contribuições para o progresso da Ciência e da Engenharia.
A sua carreira está associada ao Massachusets Institute of Technology (MIT), onde detém o título de Ralph E. & Eloise F. Cross
Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering. Atualmente, é o Diretor do MIT Park Center for Complex Systems. Foi também
Fundador e Diretor do MIT-Industry Polymer Processing Program e Diretor-Fundador do MIT Laboratory for Manufacturing and
Productivity. De 2006 a fevereiro de 2013 presidiu ao Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology - KAIST.
Nam Pyo Suh is recognized by the scientific community for his contributions to the progress of Science and Engineering. He has

Karima Benyaich é, desde 2008, Embaixadora do Reino de Marrocos em Portugal. Enquanto diplomata, tem atuado no sentido
de intensificar a cooperação entre as universidades marroquinas e portuguesas e facilitado o estabelecimento de relações entre
os dois países nos domínios económico, científico e cultural. Tem-se destacado no apoio à condição feminina e à proteção da
infância, sendo a Presidente da Associação Voix de Femmes, de Tétouan.
Karima Benyaich, is, since 2008, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco in Portugal. As a diplomat, she has been acting to
intensify cooperation between the universities of Morocco and Portugal and to facilitate the establishment of relations between both
countries in economic, scientific and cultural areas. She has also dedicated her work to women’s rights and child protection, being
the President of the Association Voix de Femmes, Tétouan.
