We aim to establish a Canadian audience and supply them with an intense and continual high quality program, while creating a new perspective for Brazilian films in Canada. By bringing Brazilian film productions to Canada we hope to stimulate and foster project co-operation and film distribution between the two countries. Dates and Location The first edition of the Brazil Film Fest took place at the Rotunda Theatre, Royal Ontario Museum on 7th to 10th of December 2007. The theatre was chosen as the first edition!s venue because it is one of Toronto!s, and Canada!s for that matter, most representative cultural landmarks. It also hosts other important film festivals such as TIFF and Hot Docs. In addition, the venue is well located on one of Toronto!s main streets with easy access to the subway. The festival presents 12 features, half drama and half documentary, and opens today with a screening at 7 p.m. in the Royal Ontario Museum of The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, directed by Cao Hamburger. The feature is set in 1970, as a military dictatorship is taking over the Brazil and a 12-year-old boy is separated from his parents during the World Cup playoffs. Brazil is a country of extremes of wealth and poverty and those who live without a permanent roof over their heads are nowhere more numerous than in São Paulo, where more than 10,000 people live in the streets and tens of thousands more occupy slum dwellings. In House-warming Party, Ryerson film graduate Toni Venturi and co-director Pablo Georgieff profile four women co-ordinators of Movement of the Homeless of the Centre of São Paulo and follow them on a night when the homeless organize a mass occupation of vacant downtown buildings. The documentary screens on Sunday at 1 p.m. Ginga gets its name from the word for all the things that make Brazilians so good at soccer: dribbling, passing, scoring and putting everything you have into the game. The documentary covers the country to show how a national passion gets played out, from beach, to dirt lo, to full stadium, among all classes of Brazilians. Ginga will be shown on Saturday at 5 p.m. The man who brought capoeira to the world's attention is celebrated in Mestre Bimba, a documentary that begins with the history of capoeira as a martial art the slaves invented to oppose their masters. Born in 1899, Mestre Bimba – Manuel dos Reis Machado – devised a teaching method and helped elevate capoeira to a dance and musical form practised by men and women around the globe. The film screens Sunday at 3 p.m. and Monday at 1 p.m. Women of Brazil is directed by Malu De Martino, who interweaves fiction and documentary to give a portrait of Brazil through five women writers. Their stories are the basis for vignettes about Brazilian women living in five different cities. It runs Sunday at 7 p.m. Antônia is a film that has also been a popular Brazilian TV series, about four young women in São Paulo who form a rap group in their poor neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city. Female director Tata Amaral directs four fantastic actor/singers in a drama that shows the women struggling amid poverty, male violence and machismo in the music business. 1 of 2 7/12/07 14:26 TheStar.com - entertainment - What's On: Other Screens http://www.thestar.com/printArticle/282905 What's On: Other Screens December 06, 2007 Brazil Film Fest of Toronto features six feature films and six documentaries showcasing the new wave of Brazilian filmmaking. Never mind that the singersongwriting Swede's lyrical style and musicianship have more in common with Billy Bragg than Elton John. Gonzalez's latest album, In Our Nature, has him spinning deceptively simple melodies -- but his vocals ache from the weight of lyrics that grapple with the worst in human nature. Dec. 7. 7 p.m. Mod Club, 722 College St. $20. Tickets available from Rotate This, Soundscapes, Ticketmaster. 2 Temperatures may be cold, but the Brazil Film Fest heats things up cinematically. Six features and six documentaries will carry off audiences to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, the slums of Sao Paulo and, of course, the soccer pitch. Or, if music transports you more than scenery, check out Cartola, a history of one of Brazil's most important samba composers. Dec. 7 to 10. ROM Rotunda Theatre, 100 Queen's Pk. Screenings: $7. In a world of ice, one fragment pierces the soul of a boy who is then spirited away by the mythical queen to live in frozen isolation. The tale follows his best friend's quest to rescue him. With a score for string quartet by Canadian composer Patrick Cardy, director Alon Nashman's rendition of this classic will draw a new generation into the magic of this winter yarn. Dec. 4 to 15. Young Centre for the Performing Arts, 55 Mill St. $30. For more information, visit youngcentre.ca or call 416-866-8666. 4 If the tempest at the mall has you feeling down, then consider giving a piece of original art. Photorama showcases some of the most cutting-edge work in contemporary art, with most pieces priced below $600. Among the many artists with work on sale today at the 21st edition of this fundraiser for Gallery TPW are Cecilia Berkovic, Edward Burtynsky, Simon Glass, Nina Levitt and Arthur Renwick. Dec. 1 and Dec. 4 to 8, noon to 5 p.m. Gallery TPW, 56 Ossington Ave. Visit gallerytpw.ca for details. 5 If your idea of Santa Claus coming to town involves, well, a town -- as opposed to a bunch of skyscrapers -- then the Unionville Old Tyme Christmas Parade is just the ticket. Santa rides through old downtown (in a sleigh, no less) on Friday night, while shops and bistros will stay open late after the parade. And it's only 20 minutes north of Toronto (much better than spending 20 minutes waiting for a parking spot at Yorkdale mall). Dec. 7. 7 p.m. Festival continues through Dec. 9. Free. --Brazilian Film Festival 15/11 7 pm - Yansan (Yansan) / Fabricating Tom Ze (Fabricando Tom Zé) 16/11 7 pm - Birth (Passo) / Oficina Perdiz (Oficina Perdiz) / Rio Negro (Histórias do Rio Negro) 9:30 pm - OD – Digital Overdose (OD – Overdose digital) / Red Carpet (Tapete vermelho) 17/11 4:30 pm - Saliva (Saliva) / Red Carpet (Tapete vermelho) 7 pm - Mr. And Mrs. Martins (O Sr. e a Sra. For the first time in Canada comes a film festival fully dedicated to Brazilian cinema: the first annual Brazil Film Fest (BRAFF). In recognition of the recent surge of Brazilian film productions being recognized internationally for its quality and diversity, BRAFF aims to bring some of the best recent fares from the Brazilian new wave to Toronto’s film savvy audience. The Festival will open with Cao Hamburger’s THE YEAR MY PARENTS WENT ON VACATION (Brazil’s official entry for the Oscars for 2008) and will close with Tata Amaral’s ANTONIA. The first edition of the annual BRAFF takes place in Toronto December 7-10, 2007 at the Royal Ontario Museum (100 Queen’s Park). All films in Portugese with English subtitles. Tickets and detailed film lineup information at http://www.brazilfilmfest.net Through a selection of 12 recent feature-length films, the first annual BRAFF explores the delights and intricacies of multi-faceted contemporary Brazil: from the sandy beaches of Rio de Janeiro, to a pit stop at the poor neighbourhoods of megacity São Paulo, to a visit into an imaginary city in the country’s arid northeast; from classic samba to hip hop beats to energetic capoeira; and from the “ginga” way of soccer life to the plight impoverished women struggling to make a living in the big city. Films: Opening Night Film: THE YEAR MY PARENTS WENT ON VACATION, directed by Cao Hamburger Closing Night Film: ANTONIA, directed by Tata Amaral CARTOLA directed by Lírio Ferreira and Hilton Lacerda DRAINED directed by Heitor Dhalia THE FOREIGN EYE by Lúcia Murat GINGA by Hank Levine, Marcelo Machado and Tocha Alves HOUSE-WARMING PARTY by Toni Venturi and Pablo Georgieff THE MACHINE directed by João Falcão MARIA’S PLACE directed by Sérgio Goldenberg MEET YOU AT THE BEACH by Daniela Kallmann and Flávia Lins e Silva MESTRE BIMBA, THE ENLIGHTENED CAPOEIRA by Luiz Fernando Goulart WOMEN OF BRAZIL directed by Malu de Martino Three of the films are reviewed below. The opening night film has a commercial release in 2008. Most of the others do not. ANTONIA (Brazil 2006) *** Directed by Tata Amaral ANTONIA is the name of the rap group formed of four black girls (Negra Li, Cindy, Leilah Moreno, Queylenah, Marcus Vinicius Kamau). They fulfill their dream of performing as the main attraction in and out of the Sao Paul music circuit but not without balancing problems of their own that include abusive boyfriends, poverty and gang fights most of which are not found outside Brazil. What is neat about director Amaral’s film is that the audience is given a tour of what life is like – though mainly unpleasant – in and out of Sao Paulo. No need to watch a documentary for this purpose. As an added bonus, the film is enlivened by the rap songs. The best sequence is the four part harmony rendition of the song “Killing Me Softly”. DRAINED (O CHEIRO DO RALO) (Brazil 2006) ***1/2 Directed by Heitor Dhalai DRAINED would arguably be the weirdest film screened at the Brazilian Film Festival. For one, it begins and ends with shots of the a*s of actress Paula Braun, the protagonist’s object of desire. DRAINED centres on the drainage of Lourenco’s (Selton Mello) toilet. It is blocked with the result of his place of work Prologue for "The Dark Knight" Weekend Box Office (Dec 7 -9) This Week's Film Reviews (Dec 7) Brazilian Film Festival in Toronto Weekend Box Office (Nov 30 - Dec 2) This Week's Film Reviews (Nov 30th) Canadian Sneak Previews for "The Golden Compass" Weekend Box Office (Nov 23 - 25) Current Reviews The Golden Compass Walk All Over Me Atonement My Dinner with Jimi Poor Boy's Game 100 Films and a Funeral I'm Not There This Christmas Hitman Margot at the Wedding The Mist How to Cook Your Life L'Avocat de la Terreur Redacted Citizen Duane Breakfast with Scot Lourenco’s (Selton Mello) toilet. It is blocked with the result of his place of work smelling of s***. Whether or not it stands for a metaphor on his life, the stink is a reality for Lourenco who buys and resells goods from people undergoing hard times. Dhalai’s film works well primarily because he knows how to play his protagonist right. Lou is initially despised as an extremely dislikeable character. He ditches his fiancée pitilessly and preys on helpless victims. But Dhalai shows that this man at least has the guts to make good and stand up for he believes in or craves for – even though it may be the a*s of the girl serving the worst food at the stall next door. Never boring and full of unpredictable humour, DRAINED finally convinces the audience that even the most despicable person deserves a certain redemption. And in a twist ending, Dhalai delivers the goods on what he thinks. Brilliant! Love in the Time of Cholera Beowulf Before the Devil Knows Your're Dead Fred Claus P2 No Country for Old Men Bee Movie HOUSE-WARMING PARTY (DIA DE FESTA) (Brazil 2005) **1/2 Directed by Pablo Georgieff and Toni Venturi This is England The documentary HOUSE-WARMING PARTY briefly traces the lives of four Sao Paulo women with one thing in common. They are coordinators of the Movement of the Homeless Centre of Sao Paulo. The talking heads reveal their suffering from childhood to the present culminating in the need for a decent place to stay. If you have no home, you have nothing as one retorts. Through the eyes of the four and the house-warming party one night, the audience is educated and grilled through the hardships. The camera also takes a disturbing look at a confrontation with the police during a riot. All of what is presented from the slums and flophouses to squat buildings is informative but one wishes directors Georgieff and Venturi provide some viable solutions or insight on how to elevate the housing problems.
