Congratulations LIEP Cohort 1!
Newsletter Licensing International Engineers into the Profession (LIEP) Program News and updates for the LIEP Program Special Edition - October 2013 Congratulations LIEP Cohort 1! On September 19th, almost 100 family members, friends and wellwishers attended a ceremony to honour a group of 40 individuals who have moved a step closer towards their career goals in Ontario. They are the first set of graduates from an innovative program offered at the University of Toronto – Licensing International Engineers into the Profession (LIEP) program. fessional Engineers Ontario (PEO) academic requirements to become a Professional Engineer (P. These 40 engineering professionals have successfully completed this one-year part-time program, which fulfills the Pro- - Phil Schalm, Associate Director, University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies LIEP is a partnership between the School of Continuing Studies (SCS) and Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE) with multi-year funding from the Government of Ontario. LIEP has strong support from PEO, Bombardier Aerospace, OSPE, and an array of other employers and community agencies. I am thrilled with the success of this program, but, I know I am not as thrilled nor as relieved as the grads and their families! Congratulations to them, their instructors, our industry and community partners who have made this program a success. Page 1 What made this program stand out to me and be so unique are two things: First, the short length of the program to complete the courses. This conciseness gave me a clear vision of when I could graduate, complete my goals, and meet PEO’s requirements. Second, the combination of the LIEP program, FASE and SCS put me at the forefront of other candidates and opened the door for me with employers. I have now completed my major hurdles towards my goal of becoming a Licensed Professional Engineer and satisfy my employer’s requirements. The LIEP program was not easy. But I had faith and believed in myself that nothing is impossible. It sure did take a lot of hard work and dedication to be successful and now I feel more confident about myself than I ever was. I sincerely thank my family, colleagues and the faculty at the University of Toronto for all their help and support at all times. - Nadeem Siddique, Cohort 1 Alumnus A year has passed since the University of Toronto has launched the LIEP Program. A year of memories, hopes, strong-will, sincere efforts, and a mix of emotions and reactions from the participants. Thank you to my fellow classmates and study group members who helped make all this possible. And here we are celebrating together, feeling the certificate in our hands, smiling to a brighter future for us in Canada. Last but not least, a special thanks to the Dean of FASE, LIEP Program Manager, the Dean of SCS, and everyone else for contributing their efforts to making my experience and those of my fellow students successful and enjoyable. We must all acknowledge the incredible efforts made by the program’s stakeholders, the University of Toronto, and the LIEP Program team, and we must tell them: “you have made a wonderful achievement and made this a memorable day for us.” - Osama Abdalilah, Cohort 1 Alumnus - Mohamed El-Khouly, Cohort 1 Alumnus The Mechanical Engineering Cohort 1 was a diverse but motivated group that rapidly became a team. We are students originally from Bangladesh, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, India, Iran and Syria. Combined with the engineering subjects we also had the opportunity to be familWebsite: learn.utoronto.ca/liep iarized with the Canadian Workplace Culture and be prepared for the next step, the Professional Practice Exam. On the other hand, the friendships we established during this year will be treasured for the rest of our lives. By the last lectures of Summer 2013, we came to realize that this LIEP journey was coming to an end. But at the same time we were jubilant over the accomplishment, we felt a heavy heart as our almost daily interaction with friends and colleagues was going to be less frequent. - Augusta Marinho-De Sousa, Cohort 1 Alumna The gift of receiving this education from the University of Toronto, supported by PEO and the Industry; along with a grant from the Ontario Government is something we will be grateful forever.
