Minutes of meeting from the biennial conference of RG 7.01.00 “Impacts of Air Pollution and Climate Change on Forest Ecosystems“ Ilhéus, Brazil, September 1-6, 2013 Vegetation Response to Climate Change and Air Pollution - Unifying Research and Evidence from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres Scope During the recent decades, the so‐called emerging countries, mostly of Latin America, Africa and Asia, have faced the challenge of combining an unprecedented economic growth with environmental legislation of increasing stringency. Besides the socio‐environmental problems related to the rapidly growing urban and industrial centres, such as the decline of air quality, countries become concerned also about air pollution and climate change effects on natural and managed forest ecosystems. Harboring ample biological diversity, countries like Brazil bear high responsibility also for significantly contributing to agricultural productivity worldwide. In parallel, substantial advances have become evident in research related to forest and agricultural ecosystem response in the tropics and sub‐tropics to climate change, in particular, as mediated through alterations in precipitation and temperature regimes. Increasing long‐ term scopes of studies conducted in rainforests and savannas of several South American countries begin to yield scientifically solid databases towards mechanistic understanding of vegetation response. In this context, studies that focus on the effects of land‐use change and deforestation on the local and regional climate have gained particular attention. Less representative, although not less important in tropical countries, is long‐term research on the responses of plants and ecosystems to air pollution. What is actually known about the effects of exposure to elevated CO2 and O3 regimes, as well as enhanced N and heavy metal deposition on native and cultivated ecosystems? Is vegetation response under tropical conditions similar to that found in other parts of the world? To which extent are risk modelling and atmospheric pollution thresholds established in northern‐hemispheric countries transferable to the specific edaphic and climatic scenarios of the highly diverse biomes in the southern hemisphere? Evidently, a huge demand exists for exchange of expertise between researchers from Brazil, Latin America as a whole, Africa, Asia and colleagues from the northern hemisphere. Initiated during the preceding conference in Kaunas/Lithuania, a theme which requires continued discussion in our meeting in Rio de Janeiro are the interacting effects of atmospheric pollutants and climate change on plant and ecosystem performance. Changes in temperature and rainfall regimes will undoubtedly affect the regional distribution and functioning of forest ecosystems. Conversely, climate change will influence the emission rates, spreading and deposition of the gaseous agents. As a result, modified plant and ecosystem sensitivity seems to bear the risk of unforeseen changes in species distribution, community structure and associated carbon and water fluxes. Goals The international bi-annual conference of the IUFRO Research Group 7.01 “Impacts of Air Pollution and Climate Change on Forest Ecosystems” scheduled for 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been entitled “Vegetation Response to Climate Change and Air Pollution: Unifying research and evidence across northern and southern hemispheres". The conference aims to provide an attractive stage for fruitful scientific discussion and assessment of the current state of knowledge. The conference focused on identifying research needs, emphasizing the Southern hemisphere and stimulating the trans-hemispheric collaboration. Being held for the first time in South America, the conference initiated scientific interaction between researchers from across the continent, in particular from Brazil, and researchers from the Northern hemisphere. Exchange of expertise and methodological innovations was facilitated for initiating global scientific networking within joint research projects across tropical and temperate zonobiomes. Another outcome from the conference is intended to ascertain scenarios about the effects of climate change and air pollution on health, biodiversity and sustainability of natural and cultivated forests in South America, and across the globe, as well as to foster concepts for mitigation of stress impact. The mission of the conference and its outcome are envisioned to be communicated through mass media to the broad public, including decision makers, and to the scientific community via peer reviewed publications in special issues of international scientific journals. The main sessions were focused on: - Monitoring of environmental pollutants in general, including soil, water and atmosphere, Assessing pollutant effects on native and cultivated vegetation, Multiple‐scale studies related to air pollution and climate change effects on forest ecosystems, Recent accomplishments in plant genetics, ecophysiology, biotic interactions (e.g. competition, mutualism and parasitism), forest growth and productivity, ecosystem performance and modelling related to the conference theme.
