Portugal Portugal is a nation in southwestern Europe, occupying the western portion of the Iberian Peninsula. It is bordered on the north and east by Spain, with which it shares the Iberian Peninsula, and to the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean. The Azores (Açores) and the Madeira Islands, both located in the Atlantic, are autonomous regions of Portugal. Portugal is a rapidly urbanizing country, although more than one-third of the population is still rural. The population is densiest along the northern and central coastal areas and in the far south. Lisbon, the capital and largest city, is the leading administrative and services center of Portugal. It is also the nation’s principal port, a crossroads of road and rail routes, an international air hub, and home to many industries. Other important cities include Porto, the second largest city, which is an important seaport and industrial center, Coimbra, an educational and administrative center, Setúbal, also an important seaport and industrial center; Funchal, the capital of the Madeira Islands;a and Faro, in the Algarve resort area. The official language of the country is Portuguese. The monetary unit of Portugal is the single currency of the European Union (EU), the euro. Portugal’s former national currency, the escudo, ceased to be legal in 2002. 4 4. Aveiro Also known as the Portuguese Venice, the city is full of canals, bridges, and painted boats called moliceiros. These boats were used to remove the excess of vegetation in the canals and to carry animals and goods. Nowadays they are a picturesque way to go sightseeing. Due to its proximity to the sea, Aveiro has relied on economic activities related to it like salt production. Many salt beds are now used for fish farming. If you arrive by train take a good look around for you will be seeing the ancient “Fonte Nova” factory which is now the train station. This factory was very popular and produced tiles and other ceramics. Many houses still have the tile panels produced in it. It “disappeared” in a fire in 1937. The avenue you will get to, used to be the main avenue of Aveiro (Avenida Lourenço Peixinho). If you decided on doing a road trip, you may arrive at the very centre of Aveiro. There, you will see the very characteristic Art Nouveau details in some of the buildings (tiles and curves). The bar area is mainly located in “Praça do Peixe” (fish square) which (go figure…) has a fish market in the centre and many bars around. In the 13th century, Aveiro was elevated to the category of village and the settlement developed around the main church dedicated to Saint Miguel, which is now the city hall. Nearby there is the Mercy chapel built in the 16th century during a period of economic failure due to the instability in the communication of the sea with the canals. Water turned unhealthy and many people left Aveiro. Near there is the theater (19th C.). The main museum is installed in the old Convent of Jesus, which received the Infanta D. Joana, daughter of King D. Afonso V. The museum was founded in 1911 to house works of art collected from religious houses and communities that ceased to exist after the dissolution of the religious orders in 1834. 5 Near the museum there is the Sé de Aveiro. Nowadays, the church is the headquarters of the Diocese of Aveiro. There is a beautiful baroque portal, framed by 4 twisted columns, a frieze decorated with plant motifs and the coat of arms of Prince Pedro, the Duke of Coimbra, who was responsible for the monastery of São Domingos being established in the city. In the churchyard in front of the church is a beautiful late 15th-century Gothic cross, standing on a 17th-century pedestal. There is a congress centre that used to be a quite important ceramics factory and a very colourful Stadium, built for Euro 2004, “belonging” now to the local football team, Beira- mar. http://www.visitportugal.com www.eraumavezemaveiro.com 5. University of Aveiro (UA) The University was established in 1973, beginning mostly with engineering courses. Most of the buildings are located on the Santiago campus. In 1986 a team of renowned Portuguese architects designed some new buildings. Three of them are from Álvaro Siza Vieira – who designed the library and the water tank (try to see a ruler, a pencil and an eraser); Vítor Figueiredo - designed the building known as “Caloiródromo” (the round white building); Eduardo Souto Moura - planned the geosciences department. At the moment more courses are available like those related to biosciences, physics, health, chemistry, music, arts, mathematics, and so on. Fun fact: Inauguration of a SexLab took place two years ago ;) The university is not that big, bearing 14 000 students app. You can do download of map of UA at: http://www.ua.pt/PageText.aspx?id=431 6 6.
