What can we learn
for Switzerland?
Kanada hat wie die Schweiz ein föderalistisches Schulsystem und einen ähnlichen
Anteil an Kindern mit Migrationshintergrund. Die PISA-Daten sind aber deutlich besser. Heisse Eisen der Schweizer Bildungspolitik, wie die Ganztagesschule oder die
individuelle Förderung, sind in Kanada längst alltäglich. Sport und kreative Gestaltung
geniessen einen hohen Stellenwert. Die Schule ist gleichzeitig Gemeinschaft und fördert das interkulturelle Leben. Das kanadische Modell: Vielversprechend auch für die
Schweiz?
• Was können wir von Kanada lernen?
• Welche Elemente der kanadischen Schule sind auch in der Schweiz prüfenswert?
• Wo liegen die Schwachstellen?
• Wie könnte ein Austausch und Wissenstransfer aussehen?
Dominic Giroux, Deputy Minister aus Ontario, Kanada, ist ein profunder Kenner des
kanadischen Bildungssystems. Er wird die Merkmale des kanadischen Schulsystems
erläutern und insbesondere das Qualitätsmanagement aufzeigen. In der Diskussion
soll geklärt werden, inwiefern kanadische Elemente für unsere Schulen prüfenswert
sind.

Der Referent
Dominic Giroux, Deputy Minister, Ontario, Kanada
Dominic Giroux has been Assistant Deputy Minister with the Ontario Ministry of Education since 2005. He is responsible for a team of about 1,200 employees including
French-language education, aboriginal education, labour relations, governance, regional offices, parent engagement, community use of schools, private schools and provincial schools for deaf/blind/students with severe learning disabilities. Since 2007, he
has a dual reporting relationship to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities,
where he leads French-language and Aboriginal postsecondary education and training.
A member of the Ontario College of Teachers, he has a bachelor’s degree in social
sciences and a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Ottawa, as a well
as an MBA from the École des Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC) in Montreal. Prior
to joining the ministries, Dominic served as Senior Business Official in two Frenchlanguage school boards in Eastern and Southern Ontario. His involvement in education started at the age of 19 when he was elected as school board trustee in Ottawa,
and subsequently as Chair of the Board. He served on the boards of directors of the
Education Quality and Accountability Office, the Montfort Hospital and of the FrenchCanadian Association of Ottawa and is currently a member of the Management Board
of the Canadian Education Association.
