(gran) "In the past three years alone Kühne + Nagel has created 225,000 sq.m of warehouse space in Germany," said Hans-Georg Brinkmann, Chief Executive Officer of Kühne + Nagel (AG & CO.) KG based in Hamburg on the occasion of the opening of the new warehouse halls in Dubliner Strasse in Rheinhausen at the beginning of September. "The contract logistics business is buzzing," he enthused. K+N is expanding and investing in this business sector. The logistics service provider, actually an all-rounder in sea and airfreight as well as in overland transport and now in contract logistics, is particularly profiting from the trend to outsource logistics services in this division. More and more companies from manufacturing industry and retail are contracting out their warehousing, merchandise distribution and other services, such as packing, to logistics service providers like K+N to save costs and use the specialists' expertise. New campus concept Here K+N uses a campus concept in large logistics centers such as in Duisburg. By concentrating on various logistics facilities for different sectors economies of scale can raise efficiency, create synergies and flexibly manage peaks in demand. Put simply: costs and benefits are optimized for the logistics service provider and the customer. According to K+N a logistics campus basically has three characteristics: a minimum size of around 50,000 sq.m, an excellent location as well as trimodal infrastructure – like in Duisburg. The campus concept has now been implemented in Duisburg for the first time. With around 160,000 sq.m, over 100,000 sq.m of which is in logport in DuisburgRheinhausen, Duisburg has since become the largest K+N location, followed by Hamburg with nearly 150,000 sq.m. An additional logistics campus with an area of 45,000 sq.m initially is being planned in Leipzig. So it's no wonder that the Administrative Board of Kühne + Nagel International AG and numerous customers and business partners came to the official opening. "Internationally operating retail LOGPORT Kühne + Nagel and industrial companies need logistics chains that work seamlessly. The advantages of the Duisburg location as a central logistics turntable for worldwide flows of goods combined with our integrated process expertise make it possible for us to optimally manage our customers' supply chains," said Karl Gernandt, President of the Administrative Board. "We've been among the largest investors in the Duisburg port area for years and this new commitment underlines the significance that the globally operating Kühne + Nagel Group attaches to the location." He can probably count on the agreement of Honorary President and majority shareholder Klaus-Michael Kühne, who was also among the guests. Because he was the person who set course for Duisburg / logport together with port boss Erich Staake in 2000, when they met the state government under then Premier Wolfgang Clement in the old Krupp canteen on the logport site. New expansions planned The extension had only just been inaugurated when K+N already needed more space in Duisburg again. Despite the new expansion the "the end of the line" had not been reached said Staake in any case at the opening ceremony. "We are currently holding discussions with Kühne + Nagel about a new project," said the port boss without giving any details away. Only this much: he wants to set all the machinery in motion to make a new expansion possible for his showcase investor. One obviously satisfied customer there is the computer and printer manufacturer Hewlett Packard (HP) with its central supplies warehouse for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Because Volker Schmitz, Distribution & Logistics Director of the Imaging & Printing Group of HP for the EMEA region, reaffirmed the cor- poration's commitment to the Duisburg location and to their partnership with K+N in his speech at the opening ceremony. In contrast, the repeated expansion in logport has mainly been for the consumer goods corporation Johnson & Johnson. Additional customers include Airberlin and the carrier system manufacturer Thule. Negotiations are currently being held with a new customer from abroad, from the household appliance sector according to reports. "Duisburg is our heart in North Rhine Westphalia and one of our most important handling locations worldwide," said Brinkmann. 750,000 consignments a year are handled for customers in Duisburg every year. The number of jobs in Rheinhausen has risen from 80 to 250 in the last two years. A further 400 employees work in the Kaßlerfeld district. K+N employs around 500 people in contract logistics alone in Duisburg. 5 6 duisport magazine December 2011 PORTRAIT Kühne + Nagel From seaport forwarding to a world corporation For many years in Duisburg: Kühne + Nagel Kühne + Nagel is a global transportation and logistics company, based in Schindellegi in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland. This is the first sentence in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia under the heading Kühne + Nagel. What sounds like a peaceful idyll in the Swiss mountains is actually one of the largest logistics groups in the world and a success story. It has a name: Klaus-Michael Kühne. The company founder's grandson stands for the steep rise of the forwarder to among the best in the world. (gran) The company, founded by Friedrich Nagel and Alfred Kühne as a sea port forwarder in Bremen in 1890, is one of the world's leading logistics service providers today. It has over 61,500 employees at 900 locations in over 100 countries, sales of over 20 billion Swiss franks and is a full service provider in sea and air freight, contract logistics and overland transport. Kühne + Nagel is seen as the Number 1 in sea freight, Number 3 in airfreight and contract logistics and Number 6 in the sector in overland transport in Europe. More than seven million square meters of warehouse space are managed worldwide. Initiating internationalization Already entrusted with running the company in 1966 at the age of 29, Klaus-Michael Kühne and a team of committed executives emphasized the internationalization initiated by his father Alfred in the 50s and the dynamic growth of the corporation. By purchasing his own ships Kühne even attempted to become a shipowner in the 70s and 80s. But the company was shipwrecked and he had to sell parts of the corporation to the British Lonrho Group. But Kühne recovered and was able to buy his shares back and later successfully float them on the stock exchange. Since 1994 Kühne + Nagel has been a publicly owned company and holds investments in over 200 companies worldwide, mostly K+N foreign subsidiaries owned by the corporation. Since then Klaus-Michael Kühne has "passed the baton" to the younger genera- tion. Karl Gernandt, born in 1960, followed him as the President of the Administrative Board of Kühne + Nagel International AG at the beginning of 2011. "Now that we have succeed in placing Kühne + Nagel-Gruppe firmly among world's leading logistics companies and it is on a successful and ambitious course of growth, I would like to place a further part of my responsibilities in younger hands," said Klaus-Michael Kühne back then. Today he is the Honorary President and remains the majority shareholder. Through Kühne Holding AG, which is in the sole ownership of Klaus-Michael Kühne, he holds 53.25 per cent of the shares in Kühne + Nagel International AG. Kühne has lived in Schindellegi on Lake Zurich since 1975. With a fortune estimated at Kühne + Nagel PORTRAIT duisport magazine December 2011 two billion US dollars, he was placed at 277th in the famous Forbes List of the richest people in the world in 2004. Kühne is the sole donor of the charitable Kühne Foundation, to which he contributes five million Swiss franks a year and that will later control the company's assets. Kühne promotes research and education in logistics with the money, as well as medical, cultural and humanitarian projects. Expanding contract logistics In the recent past Kühne + Nagel has primarily expanded business with contract logistics. The purchase of the ACR Group in 2005 paved the way. The acquisition was the largest in the company's history up to that time and catapulted K+N into the Top 5 of global service providers in this division. This offers what might be called all-round support from warehousing, picking and transport up to additional services such as packing and assembly. In the course of globalization and the international division of labor, logistics will more and more become a networked element of global value creation chains. Thus the demand for supply chain management solutions has risen in many globally oriented sectors. As a result, alongside the strong international forwarding business, this has opened up new business opportu- Worldwide growth rate nities for Kühne + Nagel, which can be improved even further by offering additional services, so-called value added services. New takeovers That K+N remains on course for growth has been shown by the acquisition tour in the last few months alone. In mid-July the Brazilian Grupo Eichenberg with 700 employees was taken over to strengthen the Brazilian business. The company employs 260 people and specializes in airfreight with flowers, cut flowers, fruit and vegetables. In October the German company Drude Logistik with 150 employees in overland transport was taken over to build up general cargo logistics. And the contract logistics business is flourishing too. The large customer Danone has just extended is cooperation with K+N in Poland by a further three years in temperature controlled warehousing and packing services for food. In Germany the corporation is based with Kühne + Nagel (AG & CO.) KG in Hamburg. There are 10,000 employees in Germany at 100 locations and storage space of 1.35 million sq.m. In North Rhine Westphalia, Duisburg is the central location for Kühne + Nagel. Nowhere else does Kühne + Nagel operate around 160,000 m² of contract logistics area. Duisburg also has considerable importance to Kühne + Nagel's sea freight business as the largest inland waterway port in the world. Alongside Duisburg the company is represented at a further eight locations in NRW and has been for 57 years. 7 8 duisport magazine December 2011 THE PORT Regionomica study Port of Duisburg is a jobs engine for the whole region The employment market and economic effects of the Duisburg logistics location have been investigated for the third time after 2000 and 2006. The study was carried out by the reputable Berlin market research organization Regionomica. The positive development of the two most important key performance indicators has continued over the past few years. Thus the number of employees directly and indirectly dependent on the port is now over 40,000 (2006: 36,000). The total value creation attributable to the port currently amounts to more than 2.7 billion euros (2006: 2.2 billion euros). (br) "These figures impressively prove that the dynamism of Duisburg as an economic location is uninterrupted," said Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG, with pleasure. "Furthermore, they are proof of the quality of the location, which has continued to develop positively despite the economic crisis in the meantime," continued Staake. Of the over 40,000 jobs 21,660 (2006: 16,700) are accounted for by the city of Duisburg. This is equivalent to almost 14% (2006: 11%) of all jobs in Duisburg. There is a similar weighting in value creation, which stands at nearly 1.5 billion euros for Duisburg. Positive effects are also expected looking ahead. Around 60% of the companies based in the port assume that employment figures will rise in the upcoming three years. Alongside actually transporting and handling goods these companies also process and refine merchandise, thus generating additional value creation. What is new in this year's study is the question of the satisfaction of the companies based in the port with the services offered by Duisburger Hafen AG. Thus, for example. 94% of the companies said they would recommend these services, which according to experience is a sign of high satisfaction with the services offered. "We are pleased that our tailormade services have been so positively evaluated by our partners in the port. This strengthens us in our strategic orientation to further build up our business model as an integrated service provider in all logistics segments, “said Erich Staake. The market research organization Regionomica carried out three extensive com- pany surveys followed by simulations and effects calculations based on these. In doing so technical discussions and interviews with selected companies and relevant players provided supplementary qualitative assessments. These coils will then be further processed in the steel service center that is being built in Duisburg where they will be processed until Europe-wide distribution by rail, road and ship. There is a plan to expand the initially 5,500m² craned hall, which can grow with the company. “We are pleased that the global players Metal One have decided on duisport and that the Japanese community at the location will grow further,” said Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG. “This commitment once again makes it clear that the Port of Duisburg is not only attractive to logistics companies but also to international companies from manufacturing industry,” continued Staake. Construction for the location is starting in the 4th quarter of this year. It is intended to begin operations in Ruhrort as early as mid-2012. (br) In ship and rail handling relevant to revenues in the duisport Group's ports an excellent result of 33 m tonnes is also expected. What is particularly pleasing here is the increase in ship handling of currently over 20%. In term of groups of goods coal, iron and steel as well as chemicals have developed well above average. The duisport Group is on course for a new record for container handling too. From January to October inclusive over 2.1 m TEU were handled on the three modes of transport ship, rail and truck. "We are assuming that the duisport Group will significantly exceed last year's result by the end of the year," added Staake. This extremely positive development has been taken into account in the Port of Duisburg by further expansion and new construction of important infra and superstruc- ture projects. Alongside a new CT terminal, which the duisport Group is building in Hohenbudberg in the south of the logport site, RBH, a wholly owned subsidiary of DB Schenker, is expanding its capacities on the so-called Kohleninsel in the Port of Duisburg. By 2014 capacities here will be significantly extended. Furthermore, Deutsche Bahn is building the first of two so-called mega hubs for combined transport in the whole of Germany in the north of the Port of Duisburg. "This strategic course will create excellent conditions for future growth in goods transport," said Erich Staake. duisport largest inland container port in the world The Port of Duisburg has once again made the list of the “World Top Container Ports” and reached its best ever position at 92nd. As the only inland port on the list duisport reached 92nd place in the English language trade journal “Container Management”. Thus duisport came ahead of ports such as Marseille, Miami or Piraeus and is the largest inland hand- ling location for containers worldwide. This project was successfully concluded with the complete delivery of the construction components to the "Larsemann Hills" building site in the Antarctic at the end of November. "Due to the fact that the time period for assembly is very limited in the Antarctic summer the preparatory logistics processes and the appropriate design and preliminary planning are enormously important, because there aren't any extension days," said Project Manager Daniel Conrad from duisport packing logistics.
