Cuba used to be a relatively affluent country.
Blessed with mineral resources and fertile soils,
this biggest island in the Caribbean was once the
world’s largest producer of sugar. Its gross national
product was greater than Mexico’s, the number of
doctors per capita was higher than in the United
States, and its educational system was on par with
Western Europe.

Markus Nierth, who stepped down from his office
as local mayor of Tröglitz due to xenophobic agitation, tells about incidents in the southern part of
the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, investigating
the circumstances and structures behind them
which are representative for the state of affairs in
many parts of Germany. He shows the extremism
of the supposed center and uses a concrete example
to expose the mechanisms that, taken together,
have disastrous consequences: the silence of the
majority, growing complicity – secret or openly affirmative – with right-wing radicals, the inactivity
of politicians, and the many, quiet fellow travelers.
He also discusses parallel developments in BadenWürttemberg and Bavaria. The focus of this book
is Nierth’s actual experiences as mayor, which he
combines with political demands to better protect
committed politicians at the communal level and
get people more involved socially.

The History of the Federal Intelligence
Service from Its Founding to 1968
To this very day there are countless myths and legends about the Gehlen Organization and its
successor, the Federal Intelligence Service (BND). The high-level Independent Commission of
Historians (UHK) has been reappraising the history of the BND for the past five years and now
presents a comprehensive scholarly work – a singular publication project, as never before has
an active secret service granted historians open access to its archives. The result is a multifaceted picture of the West German intelligence service, of its development and its activities from
1945 to 1968, the period during which Reinhard Gehlen had a formative influence on this institution shrouded in mystery. Eliminating a blank spot in the historiography of the Federal
Republic, at the same time it offers an insightful new perspective on the ongoing debate since
the Snowden disclosures about the tense relationship between secret services and democracy,
between security and liberty in a democratic state based on the rule of law.
The project comprises thirteen volumes and spans the entire history of the BND. The first four
volumes are being published in September 2016.

The Cold War was also a war between secret
services. For the first time ever, hitherto
unknown files of the West German Federal Intelligence Service and the East German State
Security reveal the background, aims, and especially the consequences of East Berlin’s first
“concentrated strike” against the Gehlen Organization in the fall of 1953. The move resulted
in several hundred alleged spies being arrested
in the GDR, the fates of whom are examined
here through the lens of two secret service agencies. This intelligence war did not take place
behind closed doors. State Security launched an
unprecedented media campaign to publicly
discredit the Gehlen Organization. The Stasi
chalked up a “victory” with its operation,
whereas the future Federal Intelligence Service
was not only forced to remedy security issues in
late 1953, it also had to repair its reputation –
in the Federal Chancellery, with the CIA, and
in the eyes of the West German public.

From the jungles of the Congo to a courtroom in
Germany, this book traces the story of a well-organised armed group which rapes women, loots villages and murders civilians – crimes partly masterminded in Germany. The FDLR (Democratic
Forces for the Liberation of Rwandan) is a Rwandan Hutu militia based in Eastern Congo in which
the perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide
reorganised themselves. Its two most senior political leaders live in Germany. In 2011 they went on
trial in Stuttgart. It was Germany‘s first war crimes
trial under the legislation incorporating the Rome
Statute of the International Criminal Court. It ended in September 2015 with guilty verdicts but the
presiding judge said that „mammoth trials“ like
this were unmanageable under current procedure.
What happened? And what is the nature of the
FDLR war in the Congo?

Censorship in East Germany was abolished on December 1, 1989. This was the green light
for Christoph Links, an employee at East German publishing house Aufbau Verlag at the time,
