MORE ABOUT OUR SPE AKERS + TOPICS
KEYNOTE SPEAKER | A-P HURD – Level the Playing Field
Vice President, Touchstone Development, Runstad Fellow at UW, Co-Author of “The Carbon
Efficient City,” Chapter President of NAIOP
Women still face bias in the workplace and at home, and can benefit from specific strategies to
build a fulfilling career on this still not-so-level playing field. Drawing on research and personal
anecdotes, A-P talks about how to bring your "whole self" to work, and differing strategies that
can be required at different points in one's career. She’ll address the importance of mentoring
received from informal networks of women in our industry and outside the work world.
PANEL DISCUSSION | Shape the Future – and Your Career
Each of our distinguished panelists will give a short presentation on the history, lessons and
passions of their own careers, followed by an open discussion of women’s work issues
facilitated by Jane Mounsey, GLY’s Human Resources Director. Our panelists have been
seminal to the development of innovative project delivery and sustainable thinking in the NW.
KELLI LEITH | Senior Planning + Real Estate Manager, Microsoft
Getting a Seat at the Table
How do you present yourself, market your brand and promote yourself in a way that gets you a
“seat at the table” and “into the conversations?” Everything we do represents who we are and
how we are perceived by others. We can significantly impact how we represent ourselves,
which can lead to an influential “seat at the table.” Several years of participation in Microsoft
focus groups helped hone Kelli’s experience and knowledge about the differences in how
men/women think and what leads them to excel.
KATHLEEN O’BRIEN | Executive Director, The EMERGE Leadership Project
EMERGE: A Leadership Approach that Works for All
How can you serve while not being subservient? Emergent leadership is a model forged in a
male-dominated work culture – the design and construction industry – in order to generate
awareness and change from “business as usual” practice. Although Kathleen resists defining
emergent leadership as a “feminine” form of leadership, it IS very strategic when one does not
have the power of position, or has the position, but not the authority. You’ll learn what an
emergent leader is, how it evolved in the context of Kathleen’s professional life, and how you
might apply it in your role as a professional change agent!
Martha Rose, president, Martha Rose Construction
Pivotal Moments + Setting Yourself Apart
Martha’s long journey in the construction business, from non-union apprentice to residential
construction owner, has given her many priceless insights into the details of career building.
Martha will address those pivotal moments that define a career, including: learning to
recognize and adopt mentors every step of the way, turning negative experiences into positive
outcomes, staying engaged by taking side roads, and using both your attitude and aptitude to
make progress. She’ll also talk about how to set yourself apart, by not worrying about what
others may think, learning continuously as much as you can, following your heart and getting
involved with the industry and giving back.
We encourage you to engage with our panelists, and pick their very fine brains. Depending on
your interest, some potential topics covered in discussion may include:

Making a difference in our industry
Becoming a visionary, pushing the boundaries to shape positive environmental, social
and delivery trends in built environments.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS | TAKING YOUR SKILLS TO THE NEXT LEVEL
At event check-in, please select one of the three BREAKOUT SESSIONS to attend.
1.
DEB WILLARD, Senior Project Manager | Vulcan
JULIE DEDONATO, Project Manager | Vulcan
Entitlement, Preconstruction, Site Preparation, Relationship + Team Building
Our discussion theme will be the importance of the Owner’s involvement in the entitlement
process and building relationships with City reviewers and City utilities. We’ll also expand
on the importance of preparing the site for construction to promote successful construction
kick-off.
2.
SARAH DREGER, Director of Virtual Design and Construction | McKinstry
HEATHER HULL, AIA, Integrated Design Engineer | GLY
Beyond 3D Modeling: Exploring BIM’s 4th + 5th Dimensions
As leaders in integrated project delivery, Sarah and Heather will offer a unique perspective
on Building Information Modeling [BIM] and how to leverage it. Most people today think of
BIM as primarily 3D modeling with clash detection. But as virtual design progresses, we
are starting to involve the fourth and fifth dimensions into the process even more.
Every project comes down to Time and Money. Sarah and Heather will detail how their
companies are using 4D simulation [which is sequencing the construction to a schedule]
and the 5D estimate [which includes calculations and quantities]. They’ll also demonstrate
how coordinated team processes and utilization of BIM throughout the building process
contribute to desired, predictable outcomes and touch on potential and future applications
of BIM-related technologies.
3.
BRENDA NUNES, LEED AP, Managing Broker | Keller Williams Eastside
Climb the “Career Lattice” to the Career You Want
Join Brenda in this facilitated discussion as she helps participants identify their passions
and develop plans for integrating them into their careers. Participants attending this
session will identify what’s important to them in their careers, what strengths they bring to
the table, and how to combine past unrelated experiences into their dream career.
Nunes will also help participants understand the value of relationships and how to
effectively use them so all sides win. She will share strategies for getting the most out of
your current position even though it may not be the dream job. Participants leaving this
learning-based session will have an action plan that will provide a roadmap to getting the
career you want. Brenda will also provide resources for those that want to spend more
time developing their career.
