Ankündigungen, Witze, Fotos, usw Ein Wort vom Präsident (A Word from the President) Wurstfest Wurstfest time is nearing – the Wurst is curing, the Bier is brewing, and the Ompah Musik is thrilling – our favorite time of year is here. At our October meeting, many of you signed up to work at our German-American Society booth at Wurstfest. We still have some open slots on our sign-up board. If you have not yet signed up to work and you are still interested in helping us, we will have the sign-up board at the November 4th meeting. Of particular importance will be your help with the merchandise Pricing Party at Mary and Barry Irwin’s home on October 31, the Stocking Day at the Wurstfest booth on November 3 (all Day Chairpersons must attend), and finally the Clean-Up Day at the booth on November 17. We need all the help we can get. Christmas Party The Christmas Party is coming together nicely. We have been very successful with volunteers signing up to help. Cindy Coers and Mary Irwin are coordinating the affair scheduled for Tuesday, December 2. We will not have a regular business meeting that night. The night is reserved for fellowship, music, and good food. As we do every year, the meal will be catered and members provide the desserts. May I add that some of the most amazing desserts I have ever tasted are served at the annual German-American Society Christmas Party. Put December 2 on your calendars and start thinking about what kind of dessert you will bring to the party. Wassailfest We are still struggling with volunteers signing up for Wassailfest which will be December 4. The Society Board is working on dividing the responsibilities up into multiple committees to spread the workload out so it isn’t such a burden on any one individual. Wassailfest is an important annual event for two reasons. First, we generate decent revenue as a fundraising event. Second, it is great exposure for us in the community. The German-American Society has established quite a reputation for its renown pork chop- on- a-stick that we sell every year at Wassailfest. Please help us keep the tradition alive by volunteering to help us in this worthy cause. You may sign-up to help at the November 4 GermanAmerican Society meeting. Officer and Board Member Nominations Finally, there is still an opportunity to help on the Nominations Committee. We have a couple of Das Deutsche Amerikanishe Monatsblatt 1 volunteers but are still in need of one or two more members to help recruit members who are willing to serve as officers and board members. Elections are held every year in January at the first regular business meeting of the year. This year the president’s position will be open because my term expires, and First Vice President, Eric Tennyson, cannot assume the position due to career and work related restraints. In addition, John Coers may be stepping down from Publications, Cindy Coers from Secretary, and Mary Irwin from Programs. We really need everyone’s help in assembling a strong slate of officers and board members to carry the German-American Society through 2015. You may contact me if you are interested in serving on the Nominations Committee. My email address is [email protected] , and my cell phone number is (830) 481-6792 and home number is (830) 632-5379. I shall look forward to hearing from you. Auf Wiedersehen! Bill Mikeska Herzlichstes Willkommen zu den neuesten Mitgliedern unseres Vereins! (Fun for all) October Meeting It was wonderful to have our old friends, "The 3rd Generation" play for us at last month's meeting. Those kids have surely grown physically, and musically. It has been our pleasure to be able to watch them progress, and to be able to hear their repertoire grow. Once again, a fabulous job that everyone enjoyed! (Photos at end of Monatsblatt.) November Meeting At our November meeting, we will have something new----the first performance of our very own folk-dance group! Some of our members had expressed an interest in learning folk dances, and Helgard Suhr-Hollis was able to organize this. They will be performing at the Wurstfest, but will try their newly learned dances for us, so this should be a fun time. It might be so much fun that you might find yourself interested in joining them....or not. It will still be a fun night. Mary Irwin Volksmarsch The New Braunfels Marsch und Wandergruppe is sponsoring a 5 and 10 km walk on Saturday, Nov. 8th & Sunday, Nov. 9th. The walk starts at the Schlitterbahn Employee Café on corner of North and Liberty Street between 8 am and noon. The walk must be finished by 3 pm. The fee is $ 3.00 per Das Deutsche Amerikanische Monatsblatt 2 walker and each participant receives a ticket to attend Wurstfest. For more information or a flyer, contact Helgard Suhr Hollis at (830)625-6330. Events & Special Dates Coming Up As in the past, the success of our Society depends on volunteers which have always stepped forward to help. Richie Odorfer 2014 Wurstfest Pin Thanks to Joyce Evans, Karola Lemieux, and Lillian Sands, who submitted ideas for the 2014 German-American Wurstfest pin! All of the ideas were great! The Board voted to accept the design submitted by Karola, and the pin turned out very well. Sprichwörter Arbeite klug, nicht hart. Work smart, not hard. Wer sich im Alter wärmen will, muss sich in der Jugend einen Ofen bauen. He who wants to warm himself in old age must build a fireplace in his youth. John Coers Das Deutsche Amerikanische Monatsblatt 3 Lebensregel Photos of October Meeting featuring the 3rd Generation! Willst du dir ein hübsch Leben zimmern, Mußt dich ums Vergangne nicht bekümmern, Das Wenigste muß dich verdrießen; Mußt stets die Gegenwart genießen, Besonders keinen Menschen hassen Und die Zukunft Gott überlassen. (Johann Wolfgang Goethe) The Rule of Life If thou wouldst live unruffled by care, Let not the past torment thee e'er; As little as possible be thou annoy'd, And let the present be ever enjoy'd; Ne'er let thy breast with hate be supplied, And to God the future confide.
