popular events like the Int’l
Open Deep Sea Fishing
contest, Coast-to-Coast running. Lobos-Corralejo swim
contest, FudeNaS Biking,
Int’l ½ Marathon Dunas de
Fuerteventura, Int’l Kite Festival, etc. So, plenty of opportunities to enjoy: for those
who want to participate and
let their muscles work and
for those who want to see
others sweat.
Another event, worth mentioning, is stargazing. With
a bit of luck (in a dark area
and with no clouds), you will
be able to see our galaxy,
the Milky Way, some planets
and maybe even shooting
stars. And for the little ones
who cannot stay out of bed

Tradicionalmente,
esta época del año ofrece
varios eventos populares
como el Concurso Internacional de pesca de altura, la
carrera de costa a costa, la
travesía a nado Lobos- Corralejo, la carrera de bicis
FudeNaS, el ½ maratón
de las Dunas de Corralejo,
el Festival internacional de
cometas, etc. Es decir, un
montón de oportunidades
para disfrutar: bien para
aquellos que quieran participar y mover los músculos
o bien para aquellos que
quieran ver sudar a los demás.
Otro evento que merece la
pena mencionar, es contemplar las estrellas. Con
un poco de suerte (en un
zona oscura y sin nubes),
serás capaz de ver nuestra galaxia, la Vía Láctea,
algunos planetas y tal vez
incluso, estrellas fugaces.
Y los más pequeños, que
no pueden irse tan tarde a
la cama, podrán disfrutar de
las impresionantes puestas
de sol.
Además de visitar los pueblos de Fuerteventura, otros
lugares de interés para visitar son la granja de tortugas
en el puerto de Morro Jable, el jardín botánico de La
Lajita y el Museo de la sal
en “Las Salinas”, cerca de
Caleta de Fuste. La granja

gubernamental para reintroducir las tortugas marinas
en Fuerteventura, una vi-

Ein weiteres erwähnenswertes Ereignis findet täglich
am Sternenhimmel statt. Mit
ein bisschen Glück (in einer
dunklen Gegend und ohne
Wolken), werden Sie unsere
Galaxie, die Milchstraße,
einige Planeten und vielleicht
sogar auch viele Sternschnuppen sehen können. Und für die
Kleinen, die nicht so lange aufbleiben können, gibt es beeindruckende Sonnenuntergänge
zu bewundern.
Ausser den Dörfern von
Fuerteventura gibt es noch
andere Sehenswürdigkeiten
zu besuchen, die für die Insel typisch und wichtig sind,
etwa die Schildkröten-Farm im
Hafen von Morro Jable, den
Botanischen Garten in La Lajita und das Salzmuseum “Las
Salinas” in der Nähe von Caleta de Fuste. Die SchildkrötenFarm ist eine staatliche Initiative zur Wiederbesiedelung
Fuerteventuras mit Meeresschildkröten, ein langfristiges Projekt,

How everything
started.
1998 – on Fuerteventura,
at the edge of Corralejo,
in a screen print factory,
starts the big premiere of
“EXTREME ANIMALS“. For
the first time Helga Palmers
and Helmut Brittig create
what is still today “Extreme”:
Extreme honest handcraft,
extreme good quality and
extremely fine products from
the “Fuerteventura Factory”,
inspired by the idea to create a very extraordinary
look: the Goat Skeleton.

The Apañada
“La Apañada” is the collection by the herds of
all free roaming goats on
Fuerteventura to a central
point in order to return them
to the rightful owner. The
practice of letting the animals run freely is part of the
local folklore, but although
it looks like a disorganised
“letting-go”, it is much controlled by the Fuerteventura
Agricultural Department.
When some goats are not
anymore of major interest
to the farmer for milk production or breeding, then
the farmer lets them go
roaming freely. The majority of the free goats are
masculine. The goats roam
in specific areas that are
controlled by a supervisor
and once a year all of them
are being collected and put
in areas that are surrounded by a stonewall, called
“Gambuesas”. Here they

folclore local, y aunque parezca una práctica desorganizada, está muy controlada por el
Departamento de agricultura

Cuando al ganadero ya no le

la producción de leche o para
la cría, entonces las deja pastar libremente. La mayoría de

Vorgesetzten
kontrolliert
werden, und einmal im Jahr
werden alle eingesammelt
und in Korräle, die von einer
Steinmauer umgeben sind,

for its quality and the export to the UK and USA
was booming during 1890
- 1910. Export to Germany and France followed
soon. Main areas of production on Fuerteventura
were Lajares, La Oliva
and Betancuria. The materials that were used are
linen, batiste, silk and
poplin, depending on the
final product. However,
one of the exporters took
a couple of Canarian lace
makers to Japan to teach
the local workforce the
manufacturing technology
and subsequently the Canary lace making industry
suffered a decline, mainly
due to competition from
Hong-Kong (China) at a
later stage.
Nowadays, the local government supports this craft
by allowing children and
youngsters to learn it in
a workshop in Puerto del
Rosario and by creating
outlets that are specialised in local craft products
(Betancuria, Molino de Antigua, Airport).

Corralejo means “the
smallest corral” where livestock was kept. It is an ancient fishing village with a
modernised town centre. It
was the first holiday destination on Fuerteventura to be
developed and still is one of
the busiest tourist areas on
the island, during the day and
during the night. You may split
Corralejo into 3 main areas:
the Old Town with the Music
Square, Calle La Iglesia and
Muelle Chico are host to many
bars and restaurants; the centre of the town where you have
the main street with a handful
of short side streets that contain many shops, cosy bars,
fine restaurants and where
you also find the Shopping
Centres La Menara and the
new Las Palmeras; and then
the South of Corralejo where
you have last but certainly not
least, the Shopping Centre El
Campanario where they regularly have craft markets and
live music. Nightlife starts at
Shopping Centre Atlantico Sol
and surroundings (in the very
centre of town) and gradually
spreads out to the Waikiki Disco as the apotheosis.

of egg white, sugars, ground
almond or powder. Their
origin could date from 791,

France – where they were
served for the marriage of

Being Timid
According to my memory, I grew
up as a normal kid. However, I have
been mobbed in school and couldn’t
get help from my parents. “Don’t pay
attention” or “it won’t be that bad” they
answered. This situation at school and
the unbelief of my parents resulted in
my shyness. The fear of being marked
as “weird”, led to my social isolation. I
became a timid person. Then, after education, I have been mobbed at work
to such an extent that, at occasions, I
had suicidal thoughts. I wondered “Is
this going to be my life?”
The moment that I really hit the bottom
of my misery, at the age of 27, I met my
future wife. She invited me for a drink
and I remember that I was very silent,
being afraid to make errors and stupid remarks. I couldn’t imagine that a
woman would be interested in me. My
self-esteem was at such a low level.
She became my first date.
Thanks to her perseverance, I slowly
but steadily crawled out of the pit. She
constantly mentioned to me that I had
a lot to offer and that I was a loving
person.
I went in therapy and in group sessions. Also that helped me a lot. We
trained ourselves to look into others
people’s eyes for a couple of minutes.
And we learned to start and maintain
a conversation without being afraid of
silent moments. I know now that these
silent moments can be part of a good
dialogue.
I still have to work on myself but my
self-esteem has grown substantially
since. It’s a long way to go but I have
sufficient self-confidence now to make
these steps.

Meiner Erinnerung nach wuchs ich
wie ein normales Kind auf. Allerdings
wurde ich in der Schule gemobbt und
bekam keine Hilfe von meinen Eltern.
“Einfach ignorieren”oder “es wird
nicht so schlimm sein”, antworteten
sie. Diese Situation in der Schule
und der mangelnde Glauben meiner
Eltern führten zu meiner Schüchternheit. Die Angst, als “seltsam” zu
gelten, führte in die soziale Isloation.
Ich wurde ein schüchterner Mensch.
Dann, nach der Ausbildung, wurde
ich auch bei der Arbeit gemobbt, und
zwar so, dass ich Selbstmordgedanken hatte. Ich fragte mich: “Kann das
mein Leben sein?”
In dem Moment, als ich wirklich den
Boden meines Elends erreicht hatte,
im Alter von 27, traf ich meine zukünftige Frau. Sie lud mich auf einem
Drink ein, und ich erinnere mich,
dass ich sehr stumm war, aus Angst,
Fehler und dumme Bemerkungen zu
machen. Ich konnte mir nicht vorstellen, dass eine Frau an mir interessiert
sein könnte. Mein Selbstwertgefühl
war auf einem so niedrigen Niveau.
Sie wurde mein erstes Date.
Dank ihrer Beharrlichkeit, kroch ich
langsam, aber stetig aus meinem
Loch. Sie sagte mir ständig, dass ich
viel zu bieten hätte und dass ich ein
liebenswerter Mensch sei. Ich ging in
Therapie und in Gruppensitzungen.
Auch das half mir sehr. Wir lernten
anderen Menschen für ein paar Minuten in die Augen zu sehen. Und wir
lernten ein Gespräch ohne Angst zu
beginnen und zu führen ohne Angst
vor stillen Momenten. Ich weiß jetzt,
dass diese stillen Momente Teil eines
guten Dialogs sein können.
Ich habe immer noch an mir zu arbeiten, aber mein Selbstwertgefühl hat
sich sehr verbessert.
Es ist ein langer Weg, aber ich
habe genügend Selbstvertrauen,
um diese Schritte zu gehen.

oldest remains of volcanic activity on the Canary Islands.
When Jean de Béthencourt
from Normandy and his friend
knight Gadifer de la Salle
set foot on Fuerteventura
at the beach of Puerto de la

Cuando Juan de Béthencourt
de Normandía y su amigo el

pusieron el pie en Fuerteven-

The marine turtles visit the
Canary Islands on their migration from the US coasts
to Africa. Although they visit
these islands all year, the
peak is in the summer.
There are 8 species known
of the marine turtles that are
found in the subtropical and
tropical seas. These species
originated from about 60-10
million years ago and developed from a much more
ancient ancestor, some 200
million years ago. About 130
million years ago, they were
abundant and managed to
survive cataclysmic events,
unlike the dinosaurs. But
since then, they have not
changed significantly. They
have a characteristic shape
due to their bone shell that
covers the viscera and efficiently protects them.
Turtles are classified as
reptiles and although they
are well adapted to their
marine environment, they
have to surface to breathe
and the females have to go
on land to nest their eggs.
They can live for about 100
years, but are now an endangered species due to the

There are four species that
are regularly visiting the Canary Islands:
The Leatherback Sea Turtle:
the oldest of the 8 species.
It does not have a hard shell
like the other ones, but is
covered with a leather-like
skin. Its predominant colour
is black. Can measure up to
2 metres long and weight up
to 500kg. Mainly eats jelly
fish.
The Green Sea Turtle: the
shell can measure up to
1,4m and the weight can
reach up to 250kg. The predominant colour is greenish
or brownish. The carapace
has 5 vertebral and 4 costal
elements. It feeds on jelly

hasta 500kg de peso. Principalmente come medusas.
La tortuga marina verde:

Wirbel- und fünf Rippenelemente und ist eher oval. Ihre
Nahrung besteht aus Krabben, Fischen und Quallen.
Die Paarung findet im offenen Ozean statt und kann
mehrfach sein, wobei die
Befruchtung der Eier hinausgezögert wird, wenn nötig,
sogar für Jahre. Die Paarungszeit ist von April bis

and/or destroyed by crabs
and the hatchlings, on their
way to the sea, can be captured by birds. Once in the
sea, they can be eaten by
fish. This all result in a high

the fact that turtles can act
slowly when they are on the
surface as they might be
thermo-regulating (warming
up). If the turtle still needs
help after your intervention,
take it slowly out of the water, keep it in the shade and
rinse constantly with seawater to keep it cool. Call the

peces. Todo esto tiene como
resultado una elevada tasa
de mortalidad en las crías.
Una vez adultas, la tortuga
apenas tiene depredadores,
salvo una excepción... el
hombre. La captura de tortugas hembras para el consumo humano, el robo de huevos,
la degradación de las zonas
de reproducción, debido a la
industria del turismo, la captura accidental por redes de
pesca da como resultado
que de unos 1000 huevos
solo 1 o 2 tortugas consigan
alcanzar la edad adulta. Otra
amenaza son las bolsas de

day decided to do something
different and left his home in

living the life of a beach bum

use of long exposures. With
this technique and his quest
for the perfect light and framing he is able to produce
