We intend to provide you with as much information as possible about student life in Regensburg with this booklet. Therefore this guide is divided into four areas: • “Your campus” starting at page 10 gives you some orientation on the campus and how to arrive there best. • “Your studies” groups important information about studying at Ostbayeri- sche Technische Hochschule Regensburg. It doesn‘t matter, whether you‘re searching for a copier, a book or important dates - after reading page 38, you‘ll know how to organise your studies. • “Your student‘s life” gives you an idea of what to do in your free time. With sport, parties and night life tips starting at page 54 your day is planed quickly. There is also a tip how to find a flat or where to buy a bicycle. • “Your student‘s union” does not only try to write some guides in English, but also offers considerably more. Page 66 and following include contact information of fellow students and information about the organisational structure of the students government as well as how to become part of it. No worries - it is possible to master studies and the new life in Regensburg without this guide and don‘t start memorizing all of it. It shall be an easy reading and a reference for finding answers. Make use of the freshmen offers of the students’ union and you‘ll find new people very quickly. You can visit us in our offices (see page 66), where we voluntarily help you with questions and concerns. Next to almost every office is a timetable, where you can look up opening hours. This guide is result of hard work. Unfortunately some information is changing really fast. If you’re not quite sure about the texts, just stop by and ask! We wish you good luck, endurance and above all a lot of fun during your studies at Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg! If you desist from the buildings in Prüfeninger Staße - whose users shall relocate sooner or later - Hochschule and university share a huge interconnected campus which ranges from Seybothstraße to the university’s clinical centre. The next pages should be of help to find your way. Ways in Regensburg Part of the callback contribution that has to be paid every term is intended for the “Semesterticket”. Hence your student ID is valid as a ticket in the public local traffic. It is valid throughout the area of the RVV (see page12), that’s why you don’t need to purchase a ticket for the busses, trains of DB or other railway companies as long as it’s a means of transportation in local traffic. The current ticket is priced at 72€, starting from summer term 2014 the ticket costs 75€, the following summer term the price increases to 77€. The agreement between RVV and the Studentenwerk ends in the winter term 2015/2016 with the price at 79€. That means that you can go to Neumarkt as well as from Fischmarkt to Uni Mensa stress less and for free. The semester ticket is valid - like the student ID - during the whole semester and therefore the lecturefree time, too. Having a bike is worth a lot in Regensburg - some ways are really short then. If you consider buying one you can find a small assortment of traders on page 65. Promenades through the historic centre or bike tours through rural environment have their charm, too. There are also guided city tours in Regensburg which are not intended to go a very long distance and to hear a lot of things in very short time. If you’re interested in an alternative city tour, have a look on the following site: http://www.regensburg.de/tourismus/de/. Registering Regensburg as a second residence provides you with a gift coupon for a guided city tour. You see, there’s no need to have a car in Regensburg, because you’re very flexible and mobile by foot, bike and busses. 10 Study Guide of Student Representatives of OTH Regensburg – WS 13/14 YOUR CAMPUS Ways in Regensburg Adresse: Franz KASSECKER GmbH, Bauunternehmen 95652 Waldsassen, Egerer Straße 36, Tel. We tried to give a summary about the most common ways for being on your way to the university. by foot …it is often the fastest way through the historic centre - compared to other means of transportation - if you know your way through the multitudinous alleyways and backyards. Moreover, the routes in Regensburg seem longer as they actually are: if you have to wait ten minutes for the bus at the university, you can also walk and arrive at the same time the bus does at the central station. Taking the „Schleichweg“ behind the canteen to Street Bischof-Konrad saves you time as well. by bicycle …A good choice to get fast from A to B. If your destiny is across the Donau it’s much easier going there by bicycle since you can use both „Steinerne Brücke“ and „Eiserner Steg“ to cross the river, which is denied to other means of transport. Hence, you save half the time in comparison to bus and car. Additionally, you are more flexible by bike because you are not dependent of some time tables or getting one of the rare parking spots. The only counterargument is the weather dependence. As the respect for foreign bikes is rather notorious than famous, you need to take good precautions against thieving. Apart from that, going by bike is the best solution to make your way through the city. by bus …As long as you calculate on more time in the mornings, RVV is a good option, too. RVV also managed some extra busses during the rush hours of the university’s lecture period (unfortunately they did not gear to our lecture period). Problem is going home after partying: on weekdays there’s no bus after midnight. Friday and Saturday night the „Nachtschwärmer“ busses are available after midnight. Most students prefer the bus, which causes a nerve-wracking capacity overload. If you want to arrive on time, you should take an earlier bus since the busses are completely overloaded in the mornings, which causes delays. Reason is that sometimes there are light barriers which some passengers are not aware of. That’s why closing the doors sometimes takes up to five minutes. bus lines Bus lines leading to the campus are 2B, 4, 6, 11 and 19. For going to Prüfening you take line 1 or 4. During lecture time (of the UR, of course...) those bus lines, except for line 19, go more often, especially during peak times. Further12 Study Guide of Student Representatives of OTH Regensburg – WS 13/14 YOUR CAMPUS Ways in Regensburg more, there are extra bus lines during lecture period: C1 is reinforcing line 11, C2 is reinforcing line 2, C4 is reinforcing line 4 and C6 is reinforcing line 6. For exact schedules and further information try the RVV customer centre, Hemauerstr. 1, near the bus terminal Albertstraße. There’s the chance to purchase a bus schedule, or you simply download relevant ones from: http://www.rvv.de. On pages 14 are some of the schedules above listed. by car ...Parking lot affliction influences the picture of Regensburg, at the university as well as in the city centre. Wrecking services are at „sites of crime“ right away. Our suggestion is to use your car only for emergency situations! Do not park at lawns, they are no parking areas. Additionally, mind the road signs. If your car is towed, however, the following website might help: http://www-verwaltung.uniregensburg.de/Abschleppdienst.htm. Nevertheless, if you need a parking lot in the city centre, you can try the Donaumarkt or parking decks (for example the parking deck at Dachauplatz). At parking areas on the campus, the headlamps of a brand new car of a professor as well as some radios etc were stolen in broad daylight. Thus, it is not to be suggested to use the campus as durable parking position. /KVFGO488\WT6GEJPKUEJGP *QEJUEJWNG4GIGPUDWTI &KG6GEJPKUEJG*QEJUEJWNGKUVOKVFGO488DGUVGPUGTTGKEJDCT >%CORWU5G[DQVJUVTCGKUVÒDGTFKG*CNVGUVGNNGPō*QEJUEJWNGŋ .KPKGP%WPFWPFō)CNIGPDGTIŋ .KPKGP%WPFCPIGDWP FGP&GP5VCPFQTVKPFGT2TÒHGPKPIGT5VTCGGTTGKEJVOCPÒDGT FKG*CNVGUVGNNGō.GUUKPIUVTCGŋ .KPKGPWPF 0·JGTG+PHQTOCVKQPGPWPVGTYYYTXXFGQFGT FGPPGDGPUVGJGFGP%QFGUECPPGP 488-WPFGP\GPVTWO*GOCWGTUVT6GN (CZMW\"TXXFG Study Guide of Student Representatives of OTH Regensburg – WS 13/14 13 14 Ba Die hn in Oberwinzer 10 Study Guide of Student Representatives of OTH Regensburg – WS 13/14 Pentling 8 P. It’s not only your student ID but also your ticket in the local traffic, your library card, your sports centre using empowerment as well as your canteen card. For using the HS.R card to purchase meals or snacks in the cafeterias you have to charge it. This happens on one of the charging stations all around the campus (e.g. in the canteen’s entrance, in some cafeterias ...). Be aware that you have to feed all of these charging stations with cash, except for one that’s located in the canteen’s entrance. You don’t have to remove the card from your wallet as long as there’s no other RFID card in it. Do not remove the card from the display when it’s still charging! If you’ve lost your HS.R card, inform the students’ administration in Prüfening (Room P024, Tel: 0941- 1050), where you get a new card in exchange for 10€. If you’re facing problems charging your card, contact the service office in the university’s canteen’s building. Study Guide of Student Representatives of OTH Regensburg – WS 13/14 25 Getting some food YOUR CAMPUS Using your card Locations All in all there are three canteens for all of Regensburg’s students. One is located in the Building in Seybothstraße, another is in the basement of the building in Prüfeningerstraße, and another at Uni-Campus (AlbertusMagnus-Straße). If you just want to have a snack, you can visit one of the eight cafeterias spread all over the campus (there is at least one in each bigger building). Taste It‘s up to you to decide, if you like the food served in the canteen or not. Nevertheless, the price-quality-ratio is student friendly and the variety in the daily range of meals is more than just ok. The friendly personal and good atmosphere is also attracting students from Uni (though their canteen has recently been renovated). This leads to a waiting time of up to 15 minutes during rush hour. It is recommended to spare the canteen during 12:00 am - 01:00 pm to avoid this inconvienience unless you like queuing up to the library‘s entrance. Menu If you need a decision making help for whether you head for the canteen instead of the cafeteria, there are current menus put up in the cafeterias and you can also look them up at the following site: http://www.stwno.de/joomla/de/gastronomie/speiseplan/hs-regensburg 26 Study Guide of Student Representatives of OTH Regensburg – WS 13/14 YOUR CAMPUS Getting some food prices in the canteen Soup: ca. 0,50€ Meals: 1,80€ to 3,00€ Side dishes/desserts 0,60€ to 0,70€ Salad bar 2,00€ Special offered meal (sometimes) for 1 Euro. The following pages contain a compilation of useful information that will help you through your first days at the university. The Change Poorly, university is not like school, where newsletters were sent to your parents and information material is handed out. It happened more than once, that a completely unsuspecting and innocent student was exmatriculated simply because nobody told that unlucky guy/girl that it was time to pay the fees for confirmation. In other cases exams could not be written as the student was not registered and the deadline has been some time ago. The easiest way to avoid inconvenience like this is to check your email account provided by Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg (see page 42) regularly and to have a look at the HS‘ homepage. If you need peculiar information but don’t know whom to ask, it is best to contact professors of your faculty. Also, the secretary of the faculty is a good place to go. Whether you like sports, going to a concert, partying or enjoying spiritual events- there is plenty of opportunity to get through a day in the city of Regensburg as well as on the campus itself. You will find some activities on the following pages. Cultural activities on the campus There are a lot of students beyond the students‘ council of each faculty committed to (inter-)cultural activities. Particularly worth mentioning is the students‘ stage, which is supported by the Studentenwerk Niederbayern/Oberpfalz and located at the Uni Regensburg‘s theatre. Not only modern but also new as well as serious plays are regularly staged there. Now and then the mostly student actors perform a play in the original language and text. If you are interested about any plays and dates, you can get a leaflet called “Kultur auf dem Campus” from the Studentenwerk within the current program. Kneipenrallye Every term there’s a bar hop (that means Kneipenrallye in “German”) for all the new starters in Regensburg. It is organised by USO and it usually starts at the Dome. You get a guide-sheet with several bars, pubs and clubs with a fun question for you to answer. Winner is the student with most correct answered questions and stamps on the sheet. FH-Fest USO also organises this indoor- party. About 60 students set up seven different bars and three floors within the Seybothstraße-building. Admission is by ticket only! The advance booking usually is on Monday of the same week the party takes place in the students’ representatives offices. You have to be an early bird, because they are quickly sold out. 54 Study Guide of Student Representatives of OTH Regensburg – WS 13/14 www.bechtle.com/karriere www.fee.de RAUM FÜR ZUKUNFT ELEKTROTECH ENGINEERING Zielstrebig. Below you find an abstract of your students’ representatives’ higher education policies. Autonomy Autonomy means that the university can make its own decisions as long as they’re not going against the Ministry of Science’s course. Some topics cause longer discussions and nothing’s let through on the nod. …academic All members of the university take part in decision making. Decisions are made in elected bodies and by bare majority. Students are able to take up position and show different perspectives, which other body members were not aware of. Academic autonomy is divided in eight faculties, which gather similar study paths. The administrative body is controlled by one central point, where decisions concerning the university are made. Persons in charge do the routine business and implement the bodies’ decisions. For your faculty it’s the dean, for the university altogether it’s the university’s president. …student Students` representatives are organised in bodies, as the Bavarian Higher Education Act provides. These bodies are: spokesmen, students’ convention, faculty’s spokesmen and faculty’s representatives. In opposite to academic autonomy there’s no classification in superiors and subordinates. Students’ representatives try to shape the habitat campus along with the students. The student convention as well as the faculty’s representatives is elected by all students. Their spokesmen are elected by the student’s convention. University’s elections Every summer term elections are taking place, to elect the student representatives for every body of academic autonomy. Professors and employees are elected every second year. Study Guide of Student Representatives of OTH Regensburg – WS 13/14 67 Self administration in detail YOUR STUDENTS‘ REPRESENTATION Even if you’re not interested in higher education politics you should take your time to vote. It’s easier to discuss with deans and the university’s management with a high voter participation that authorises a student representative. You’re always free to ask the candidates about their work- we don’t see ourselves as politicians, we just try to implement your ideas and make the daily life on our campus more valuable. (e.g. by installing water coolers) Self administration in detail Academic self administration Standards are decided in a key department. The university’s key bodies are the university’s management, the university’s extended management and the senate. The bodies consist of student and staff representatives as well as professors. Chairman is the university’s president and the university’s management with its vice president and chancellor. Together they decide standards for the university’s extended management and the senate. The university’s extended management consists of the university’s management and the deans of all faculties. They discuss university-wide matters and decide measures. Senate and university’s councillors are the last resort where decisions get determined. The senate decides statutes and regulations for governing the university and public relations, whereas the university’s councillors strategic decisions such as the initiation of a new study path. For student representatives these two bodies are really important, because they’re getting the latest news from the ministry first hand. The senate decides matters, which were assigned by the Bavarian Higher Education Act, such as The university’s enacted legal regulations Ideas for repealing, changing or establishing study paths (Approving of the university’s councillors needed.) Research focuses and matters of promotion of scientific and artistic procreation Among the university’s councillors are all of the senate’s members as well as the same number of extern people. Student representatives are two out of 20. 68 Study Guide of Student Representatives of OTH Regensburg – WS 13/14 YOUR STUDENTS‘ REPRESENTATION Self administration in detail University’s councilors consist of field experts in science or economy as well as outstanding local personalities. They consult in matters of site development and decide e.g. : The university’s strategy and profile. Initiation of new study paths. Changes in the university’s constitution. Furthermore they elect the president and the vice presidents. Besides they comment on various topics such as the estimated budget and much more. In other respects the faculties manage themselves. The dean is responsible for daily affairs and chairman of the faculty council at the same time. In about five meetings the faculty council, consisting of employees, students and professors, decides about matters around the faculty. The faculty council is the means of academic self administration and student codetermination within the faculty. Within the faculty council there are several workgroups that consider particular topics. For instance, the study path committee arranges changes or establishing study paths, it develops examination and study regulations, and so on. Student self administration The Bavarian Higher Education Act regulates responsibility as well as the structure of your student representatives. There’s no AStA1 in Bavaria. The student representatives are responsible for cultural, social, technical and sporting matters and rep their students’ interests in university’s policies. Student self administration has key bodies, too. The key bodies are for instance the student convention and the speakers council. The student convention is a student parliament which elects its chairman by itself. Furthermore it elects four speakers from various faculties, the socalled speakers council. 1 Algemeiner Studierendenausschuss. Constituted student body with financial and constitutional sovereignity Study Guide of Student Representatives of OTH Regensburg – WS 13/14 69 Self administration in detail YOUR STUDENTS‘ REPRESENTATION The speakers‘ council consists of six students that represent all the student representatives and perform current business. By default both senators are members of the speakers‘ council. Two of the other four members are elected by the student convention; the other two members get elected by the student representatives. These six students represent the social, political and cultural interests externally. The university funds the student convention. As soon as the election is over, it decides a yearly budget, which schedules the resources to several sections. The university’s administration checks every claim before it’s executed. The student convention consists of both senators, the faculties‘ student representatives and 16 immediate elected students. It’s the university’s student parliament with the same scopes as the student speakers’ council. Besides key student bodies there’s a student association in each faculty. By law a student association of a faculty consists of the seven students that gathered most votes in the latest election, the first four of them are members of the faculty council. It’s a main task of the student association to inform their students and represent their interests. Furthermore they’re members of the faculty council. The student association is not only politically motivated. In fact they’re organising tournaments, tutors, office hours for questions of every kind, parties and similar things. That’s why some more students join the students association without being authorised by election. Sie begeistern sich für smart solutions? Kommen Sie in unser Team! Dynamics e.V. is the Formula Student Team of the OTH Regensburg that actually consists of 60 students of all faculties and semesters. The common enthusiasm for racing and the manifested aim to arrange for an improved quality of education at the Hochschule Regensburg caused twenty students to found Dynamics e.V. in December 2006. Since then, with support of OTH Regensburg and economy, three own racing cars were designed, constructed and produced. These participated at various official competitions of Formula Student in Europe against international teams of other universities with success. Every year, the team was able to build the racing car more innovative and reliable and was thus able to increase the performance on the events. Formula Student is a construction competition of the automotive industry. The planning, constructing and producing of a racing car is a great challenge. The project is run exclusively by students, they gain an intensive high practical orientation and are able to apply their learned theoretical knowledge. Students gain the soft skills like interdisciplinary teamwork, time management and competence of methods which are more and more important in the modern working life, too.
