Sloane`s Portuguese Books
Sloane’s Portuguese Books Júlio Costa I. Introduction Much has been written about the life, work and legacy of Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753).1 This paper will focus on a specific topic, which follows on from an earlier, related, article.2 It aims to analyse the collection of books printed at Portuguese presses which once belonged to Sloane’s personal library, scattered after his death and, since 2008, the subject of a reconstruction project.3 ‘Portuguese books’ (or Portuguese printing) are here defined as early books and other materials printed in Portugal including the overseas territories during the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries regardless of whether the authors are Portuguese or foreign and whether the works are written in Portuguese or another language (Latin, Spanish and Italian). Deliberately out of scope are books by Portuguese authors printed at other European presses, of which Sloane had considerable numbers. However, we should point out the existence in Sloane’s library of such noteworthy authors as Álvaro Tomás, Amato Lusitano, Rodrigo de Castro, Aquiles Estaço or Diogo de Teive, who became well known in Europe (and published their works at European presses) in important domains such as science, medicine or humanism. This article makes use of the Sloane Printed Books Catalogue,4 an important source of information brought together, managed and kept by the British Library. This data (as of 1 January 2015) is the starting point for the study. I searched all pertinent catalogue entries, bibliographic descriptions (collating them with identical references in other library catalogues, mainly Portuguese) and analysed several features of the data extracted from the Sloane database (see Appendix A). Finally, I composed a list that reunites all the Portuguese printed titles in Sloane’s personal library (see Appendix B). The bibliography on Sloane is, fortunately, abundant. Three titles may be cited as an example: Michael Hunter, Arthur MacGregor and Alison Walker (eds.), From Books to Bezoars: Sir Hans Sloane and His Collections (London, 2012); Giles Mandelbrote and Barry Taylor (eds.), Libraries within the Library: The Origins of the British Library’s Printed Collections (London, 2009); Arthur MacGregor (ed.), Sir Hans Sloane: Collector, Scientist, Antiquary, Founding Father of the British Museum (London, 1994). A select list of works relating to Sloane’s library compiled by the Sloane Printed Books project team can be accessed at: http://www.bl.uk/catalogues/sloane/References.aspx 2 Júlio Costa, ‘No rasto português da biblioteca científico-médica de Hans Sloane: problemas e evidências’, Páginas a&b: Arquivos e Bibliotecas, ix (2012), pp. 91-108. This paper (‘The Portuguese trail of the scientific and medical library of Hans Sloane: issues and evidence’) identifies several dispersed Sloane books in Oporto Municipal Public Library and argues for a close connection between these books and a subsequent owner: Luís Pinto de Sousa Coutinho (1735-1804), 1st Visconde de Balsemão. 3 On this specific aspect, see Alison Walker, ‘The Library of Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753): Creating a Catalogue of a Dispersed Library’, paper presented at World Library and Information Congress: 75th IFLA General Conference and Assembly, ‘Libraries create futures: Building on cultural heritage’, 23-27 August 2009, Milan, Italy. Portuguese printing (sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries) in Sloane’s library From a total of one hundred and forty-two bibliographical items from Portuguese presses, one hundred and ten undoubtedly belonged to Sloane’s library and the remaining thirtytwo present a probable high degree of attribution (see Appendix A, fig.1). In this group, multiple characteristics allow us to identify Sloane’s ownership.5 Generally, and as expected, the incidence of Portuguese typography is not very numerous when compared to the many Portuguese editions published abroad, which occupy an important place in Sloane’s library. It is not surprising that the British Library is the depository of the majority of the Portuguese books. Nevertheless, some titles are held by other libraries (see Appendix A, fig. 2). The location of the major Portuguese presses unveils a well-known reality: Lisbon is the centre of production followed at a long distance by Coimbra. Évora and Braga in comparison have a meagre editorial output. We shall also draw attention to the special cases of Portuguese Jesuit editions from presses located in the Orient, particularly in Goa (Appendix B, 50) and Macau (Appendix B, 112), at the time part of the Portuguese Empire, and the absence of any printed book from Oporto (see Appendix A, fig. 3). The distribution and the chronological evolution of the editions (see Appendix A, fig. 4) reveal an obvious predominance of volumes published in the seventeenth century (75% of the total) with a special emphasis in the 1640s and 1680s. As we would expect, the titles in the Portuguese language (and by Portuguese authors) are the most numerous (see Appendix A, fig. 5). The twenty-six titles in Castilian outnumber the titles in Latin (the most common language in the scientific and medical literature of the time). One main reason, but not the only one, is the union of the Portuguese and Spanish monarchies between 1580 and 1640.6 Two of the three titles written in Italian celebrating the history of Portugal and the recovery of sovereignty (1640) were by João Pinto Ribeiro, one of the main agents in the Portuguese rebellion against Philip IV of Spain (III of Portugal). The remaining title is the first Italian edition (translated and adapted by Carlo Antonio Paggi) of Camões’s epic poem, Os Lusíadas. Books of a secular nature (75%) outnumber religious themed books7 (see Appendix A, fig. 6) which is not surprising considering the characteristics of Hans Sloane’s library. As regards the main areas of knowledge represented in the library (see Appendix A, fig.7) we can see that Sloane’s Portuguese books specialize in history and politics (including law), science and medicine, language, literature and geography including reports of expeditions. The titles on politics, institutions and Portuguese history as well as reports about expeditions to Africa and Asia, little known in England, represent a third of the total of the Portuguese books in Sloane’s library. Portuguese titles also include prominent works by important Portuguese physicians such as António Luís, Tomás Rodrigues da Veiga, Duarte Madeira Arrais, João Ferreira da Rosa and João Curvo Semedo.8 Other areas like mathematics, astronomy, nautical and navigational sciences are represented by significant books by Pedro Nunes (Appendix B, 86), Manuel de Figueiredo (Appendix B, 52), António de Nájera (Appendix B, 79) and Luís Serrão Pimentel (Appendix B, 97). A good summary of these, somewhat complex, identification procedures can be found at: http://www.bl.uk/catalogues/ sloane/Identifiers.aspx . The documents are complicated by the participation of ‘many hands’: see Amy Blakeway, ‘The Library Catalogues of Sir Hans Sloane: Their Authors, Organization, and Functions’, Electronic British Library Journal (2011), art. 16, pp. 1-49. [http://www.bl.uk/eblj/2011articles/pdf/ebljarticle162011.pdf, accessed 22 Nov. 2014]. 6 Sixteen of the twenty-six books written in Castilian, identified here, were published in Portugal during the period of the Iberian Union (1580-1640). On the importance of the Castilian language (and even of the Portuguese-Castilian bilingualism) in early modern Portugal see Ana Isabel Buescu, ‘Aspectos do bilinguismo Português-Castelhano na época moderna’, Hispania: revista española de historia, lxiv (2004), pp. 13-38. 7 I have identified a total of thirty-five titles of religious and theological content; of these, more than half are sermons gathered in a single factitious volume (851.k.17.) which ‘share’ a Sloane number (c 3660) which only appears on the title page of the first item in the volume, Sermam gratulatorio, e panegyrico written by Father António Vieira, the famous Portuguese Jesuit philosopher, writer and pulpit-orator. 8 Sloane owned several works of João Curvo Semedo, a medical practitioner, a pioneer of chemistry in Portugal and creator of ‘secret remedies’. It is to be recalled that chemical and alchemical literature was a subject that interested Sloane, also holder of a ‘special eye remedy’; see Alison Walker, ‘Sir Hans Sloane and the Library of Dr Luke Rugeley’, The Library: the Transactions of the Bibliographical Society, 7th ser., xv:4 (2015), pp. 383-409. 5 2 eBLJ 2015, Article 10 Sloane’s Portuguese Books In this library, scientific-medical books are not the only treasures. In linguistics, we have, for example, two Latin-Portuguese dictionaries (Appendix B, 21 and 35) and two multilingual grammars (Appendix B, 46 and 101), one of them in the Kimbundu language of Angola. In poetry, there are epic compositions (e.g. Appendix B, 32, 37 and 130). We also note, as peculiarities, these three titles: the sadly famous censorious and expurgatory Index of 1624, Index Auctorum Dammatae Memoriae (Appendix B, 62); the first Portuguese periodical the Gazeta, designated as ‘da Restauração’ in a reference to the Portuguese War of Restoration (Appendix B, 59) and the only known copy of Luís Brochado’s Obra chamada Primauera dos Mininos, que trata de algūs seus estranhos nacimentos, dittos miraculosos, published in Coimbra in 1569 (Appendix B, 29). 3. Previous owners In this collection of one hundred and forty-two Portuguese printed works, two, Ambrósio Nunes’s Tractado … Peste (Appendix B, 84) and Manuel de Figueredo’s Hidrographia (Appendix B, 52), were donated by Sir Hans Sloane to the Bodleian Library during his lifetime and, at least four other books contain handwritten annotations and marginalia that deserve a more profound study. Eleven titles show previous ownership marks. Tomás Rodrigues da Veiga’s Practica Medica (Appendix B, 138), Francisco Álvares’s Ho Preste Ioam das Indias (Appendix B, 3) and Jorge de Lemos’s Hystoria dos cercos (Appendix B, 66) had as previous owner Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), the distinguished French politician who was also a renowned collector and bibliophile. These titles either bear the characteristic binding or the manuscript inscription ‘Bibliothecae Colbertinae’. After Colbert’s death his library was sold and dispersed in Paris in 1728. Another item perhaps related to Colbert is the widely read Chorographia of Gaspar Barreiros (Appendix B, 23) which belonged to Etienne Baluze (1630-1718), Colbert’s librarian. The volumes Methodus cognoscendi (Appendix B, 64), written by the Segovian doctor and humanist Andrés Laguna in Latin and published in Lisbon, and Tractado … Peste (which has no Sloane number but is listed in Sloane MS. 3995, f. 15) by the Portuguese physician Ambrósio Nunes (Appendix B, 83) belonged to Joseph Fenton (1565/70-1634), a London surgeon who owned an important medical library acquired by Sloane. Methodo de conhecer e curar o morbo Gallico (Appendix B, 13), a work in two volumes published in Lisbon, belonged to the personal library of the apothecary and medical practitioner Francis Bernard (1627-1698), sold after his death. Compendio das mais notaveis cousas que no Reyno de Portugal acontecerão (Appendix B, 67) bears on the verso of the front page a manuscript inscription ‘Samuel Bulteel anno 1658’ (this was the brother of John Bulteel, c. 1627-c. 1692), the Commentarios de Afonso Dalboquerque... (Appendix B, 1) has a previous owner Alexandre Petau (1610-1672) and the Latin text De antiquitatibus Lusitaniae (Appendix B, 102) belonged to Charles Killigrew (1655-1724/5). I also found a handwritten note that mentions a religious congregation, the Portuguese Jesuit College of ‘Cochim’ (Kochi, India), in Pedro Nunes, De Arte Atque Ratione Nauigandi (Appendix B, 86). 4. Concluding Notes At this point, and as mentioned at the beginning, it is a point worth stressing, even though not completely within the scope of this article, that in the Sloane Library there are many books written by Portuguese authors but published in the main cultural and printing capitals of Europe. A non-exhaustive research returned several titles, mainly in the medical area. Paradigmatic of these editions in foreign presses are titles written by Portuguese physicians, exiled Jews or New Christians, as is the case of Garcia da Orta, Amato Lusitano, Rodrigo da Fonseca, Estêvão Rodrigues de Castro or Filipe Montalto, amongst others. 3 eBLJ 2015, Article 10 Sloane’s Portuguese Books However, let us return to questions concerning the Portuguese printing presses. How did these books travel from Portugal to England? Certainly through commercial routes (terrestrial and maritime), but other forms of distribution and circulation should not be neglected,9 for example the main European book fairs (with emphasis on the biannual fair of Frankfurt) and the acquisition of books and private libraries at auction (cf. Point 3 above). Evidently, booksellers, agents and correspondents in the United Kingdom and abroad played a fundamental role in the process of acquisition and circulation of knowledge. It is known from his correspondence10 that Sloane kept a large network in Britain and abroad, through which he exchanged information about many issues and acquired various items including books. We also know that he developed the taste for collecting early on, acquiring, directly or through others, books and other kinds of items.11 In Sloane’s time, many still believed in the possibility of encompassing all available knowledge (in printed or manuscript form) and the great libraries, specially the aristocratic ones, were shaped by that conviction and the social status that it granted its owners. Even if certain books were not read, the existence of books written in Latin — and in other languages viewed as exotic — in important institutional, private, religious and non-religious libraries was considered a sign of erudition. I believe that this is the key to understanding the existence of many Portuguese books in old foreign libraries such as Cambridge and Oxford.12 On the other hand, we cannot exclude the internationalization13 and even the appropriation of Portuguese culture and the genuine interest of certain British institutions and personalities in acquiring Portuguese books on particular subjects.14 As a final point: Sloane had access to Portuguese books. Did he read them, take notes, reflecting on their content? Was he a devoted reader of Portuguese medical literature? We cannot tell for sure but we can speculate that from some of his books he derived some intellectual pleasure and practical utility. In the particular case of Sir Hans Sloane, I am convinced that the acquisition of Portuguese books was not prompted by mere status-seeking or dilettantism but was rather driven by true medical, scientific and cultural interests. Regarding this, we share the A lthough it is considered fortuitous, the circulation of books associated with university teaching is not irrelevant as well as political and diplomatic activity, religious activity, the gifts of authors, loans between individuals and institutions, collecting and cabinets of curiosities, travels and pilgrimages, smuggling, etc. 10 Sir Hans Sloane’s Correspondence Online: https://drc.usask.ca/projects/sloaneletters/doku.php?id=start; see also The Sloane Letters Blog – URL: http://www.sloaneletters.com/ 11 On his expedition to Jamaica, Sloane made a stopover in Madeira (1687) whose fauna and flora aroused his scientific interest; it is not unreasonable to conjecture that once there he seized this opportunity to obtain some Portuguese books. This journey and subsequent stay in the British West Indies would later result in his most emblematic scientific work: A Voyage to the Islands Madera, Barbadoes, Nieves, St Christophers, and Jamaica, 2 vols (London, 1707-25). From 1690 until the end of his long life, he was a multi-faceted collector of books, manuscripts and various artefacts: coins, medals, antiques and scientific instruments. 12 T. F. Earle, Portuguese Writers and English Readers: Books by Portuguese Writers Printed before 1640 in the Libraries of Oxford and Cambridge (Oxford, 2009). 13 Consider the paradigmatic example of the works of Jerónimo Osório. This humanist and Bishop of Silves was by far the best known Portuguese author in England until the eighteenth century (largely owing to his open letter to Queen Elizabeth I and his controversy with Walter Haddon and John Foxe); indeed, there is an unusually high number of copies of Osório’s books (mostly published outside Portugal including English editions and English translations) in Britain’s university, religious and private libraries: see T. F. Earle, ‘Portuguese Scholarship in Oxford in the Early Modern Period: The Case of Jerónimo Osório (Hieronymus Osorius)’, Bulletin of Spanish Studies, lxxxi (2004), pp. 1039-50 and also João M. N. Torrão, ‘D. Jerónimo Osório e o De gloria; um bestseller europeu de Quinhentos’, in António Andrade and Júlio Costa et al. (eds.), Humanismo, Diáspora e Ciência (séculos XVI e XVII): estudos, catálogo, exposição (Porto, 2013), pp. 233-50. 14 In the specific case of the medical sciences, besides Hans Sloane other English physicians like Joseph Fenton or Francis Bernard showed an interest in medical literature written by Portuguese medical practitioners. 9 4 eBLJ 2015, Article 10 Sloane’s Portuguese Books opinion of Pedraza Gracia when he says that: ‘Although there is no evidence that the owner has read all the books owned, it is precisely the bibliographical collection which provides the most valuable information about the owner.’15 In the future, other books from Portuguese presses may be located and identified as belonging to the library of Sir Hans Sloane, but for the moment this paper serves to indicate the significance of those which have been found. I am extremely grateful to Alison Walker (for encouragement, comments and valuable help given on a range of matters during the preparation of this article in draft form). I should also like to thank Amândio Morais Barros (suggestions and text review), Paula Andrade Martins (graphics and reviewing) and Matilde Queirós Vieira (translation into English). 15 5 eBLJ 2015, Article 10 Sloane’s Portuguese Books APPENDIX A 7 6 eBLJ 2015, Article 10 Sloane’s Portuguese Books 8 7 eBLJ 2015, Article 10 Sloane’s Portuguese Books 8 9 eBLJ 2015, Article 10 10 Sloane’s Portuguese Books 9 eBLJ 2015, Article 10 Sloane’s Portuguese Books APPENDIX B: List of Sloane’s Portuguese books Search undertaken from Sloane Printed Books Catalogue [http://www.bl.uk/catalogues/sloane/ AdvancedSearch.aspx], 1 January 2015.
