ThisworkoriginatedinthecollectionofRogerMarx(1859Nancy–1913Paris),theeditor-in-chief
of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. It subsequently passed to Émile Laffon (1868–1931), whose
collectionwasdispersedattwoposthumoussales.Thefirst,whichwasheldbySotheby’sLondon
in1936,comprisedwatercoloursandpaintingsbyEugèneBoudin.Thesecond,inZurichin1938,
includedbothOldMasterandmodernistworksonpaper.PaulProuté,whoservedasoneofthe
auction’sexperts,acquiredthissheetatthatsale.
