Mensaje desde la presidencia
Desde la última circular, la Comisión ha estado ocupada preparando nuestras sesiones
para el Congreso Regional de la UGI en Cracovia, el próximo agosto. Estoy contenta de
compartir que tendremos alrededor de una docena de sesiones relacionadas con el
tema principal del congreso “Cambios, Retos, Responsabilidad” (podéis consultar el
programa provisional en http://www.igu2014.org/programme). Estoy muy agradecida a
los grupos que han organizado estas sesiones que tratan algunas cuestiones de género
como, por ejemplo, metodologías participativas, movilidad, turismo, derechos
humanitarios, cadenas alimentarias, vidas diarias, paternidad y maternidad y medios de
comunicación, y supervivencia y progresión en la academia.
También estoy muy agradecida a nuestras colegas de la Facultad de Estudios
Regionales y Geografía de la Universidad de Varsovia, quienes han superado el reto de
organizar nuestro workshop precongreso sobre “El Género en las Nuevas Realidades:
Retos y Responsabilidades Desiguales”, el 16 y 17 de agosto. Durante el workshop se
revisará la amplia colección de experiencias postcoloniales en la investigación
geográfica y/o en la enseñanza de género alrededor del mundo. ¡Todavía están

Finalmente, estoy muy contenta de poder anunciar que la Comisión de Género le hizo
un reconocimiento a la catedrática Maria Dolors Garcia Ramon, de la Universidad
Autónoma de Barcelona, por sus múltiples contribuciones a la geografía feminista y a la
Comisión. Maria Dolors ha sido una de las defensoras más constante de la geografía
feminista en el ámbito internacional. Ella, que fue secretaria fundadora del Grupo de
Estudios de Género de la UGI (precedente de nuestra Comisión), ha organizado
congresos y obtenido fondos para su financiación, ha realizado investigaciones sobre
cuestiones de género y, también, ha sido mentora de muchos geógrafos y geógrafas
feministas a lo largo de su carrera. Le deseamos lo mejor en su próxima jubilación este
año. El reconocimiento tuvo lugar en el marco del congreso “Geografía Feminista:
quiénes somos, qué hacemos y porqué lo hacemos” celebrado en la Universidad de
Nebraska en Omaha, del 15 al 18 de mayo del 2014.
Y este año académico ya está a punto de acabar. Os deseo a todas un productivo
verano y ¡deseo veros a todas en Cracovia y Varsovia!

NOTICIAS DE TODO EL MUNDO
Felicitaciones a nuestras colegas de la Universidad de Waikato, Nueva Zelanda, por el
gran reconocimiento que les han concedido. Robyn Longhurst fue designada
Vicerectora de Educación de la Universidad, en enero 2014, y también recibió de la
universidad el premio del 2013 por su excelente dirección de postgrados. Lynda
Johnston ha recibido uno de los cuatro premios de la universidad a la excelencia
investigadora en reconocimiento al impacto generado en la comunidad. El premio honra
también más de 20 años dedicados a la formación de opiniones en la comunidad y a
proporcionar información al debate de temas como la igualdad en el matrimonio, la
identidad queer y la salud sexual y el bienestar. Lynda y Robyn han sido también
homenajeadas en el encuentro del 2014 de la Asociación Americana de Geografía.
Lynda fue premiada con el Premio Janice Monk al Servicio de las Perspectivas
Geográficas del Grupo Especializado de la Mujer mientras que Robyn estuvo presente
para recoger su premio del 2013, ya que el año anterior le había sido imposible asistir
en persona a su entrega.
El Día de Australia, el 26 de enero del 2014, Ruth Fincher (Catedrática de Geografía,
Universidad de Melbourne) recibió un importante reconocimiento del gobierno
australiano que la nombra Miembro de la Orden de Australia. Este premio honra sus
importantes aportaciones a la educación, particularmente a la geografía y los estudios
urbanos y a las asociaciones geográficas nacionales e internacionales. Ruth fue
Vicepresidenta de la Unión Geográfica Internacional entre el 2008 y el 2012, presidenta
de la Comisión de Geografía y Género de la UGI entre 1996 y el año 2000, miembro del
Comité Ejecutivo del Consejo Internacional Científico y Social del 2010 al 2013 y
actualmente es Presidenta del Comité Académico de la Universidad de Melbourne y
juega muchos otros roles dentro de la academia. ¡Enhorabuena por este gran
reconocimiento nacional!
En la VGDH (Asociación de la Geografía Alemana) se ha formado un grupo de trabajo
sobre género para llevar a cabo un estudio cualitativo y cuantitativo sobre la
persistencia de las desigualdades de género en los departamentos de geografía
alemanes. Además, el Deutscher Geographentag ha pasado a llamarse Deutscher
Kongress für Geographie para responder a la nueva realidad de la geografía alemana,
donde hombres y mujeres juegan ahora un importante rol. El antiguo nombre usaba
solamente la forma masculina de geógrafo (Geographen) y excluía a las geógrafas
femeninas (Geographinnen).
Felicitaciones a Anne Buttimer (Profesora Emérita, Universidad College, Dublín) quien
ha sido galardonada por la Asociación de Geógrafos Americanos, en su encuentro
anual de abril del 2014 en Tampa, Florida, con un premio de reconocimiento a su
carrera. El premio valora sus continuas contribuciones a la historia y filosofía de la
geografía y su papel en conectar la geografía con las políticas sociales. Además,
reconoce también su liderazgo internacional, que incluye la presidencia de la Unión
Internacional de Geografía (2000-2004) y actualmente la vicepresidencia de la
Academia Europaea.
Tovi Fenster, Universidad de Tel Aviv, ha ofrecido una serie de conferencias sobre
“Género y Ciudad” a finales de enero del 2014 en la Universidad de La Laguna, Tenerife
(Islas Canarias). Estas conferencias han sido organizadas por la catedrática Luz Marina
Garcia Herrera, quien ha activado un grupo de investigación sobre ese tema.
El libro Alternative Development: Unraveling Marginalization, Voice Change (Desarrollo
Alternativo: Resolviendo la Marginalización, Cambio de Voz) rinde tributo a la labor de
Ragnhild Lund, de la Universidad Noruega de Ciencia y Tecnología y miembro del
comité directivo de la Comisión de Geografía y Género de la UGI, por haber fomentado
el trabajo colaborativo internacional en el ámbito de los estudios de desarrollo y de
género. El libro, editado por Catherine Brun, Piers Blaikie y Michael Jones se ha
inspirado en las cuatro décadas en las que Ragnhild “combinó la vida académica y el
activismo con temas de desarrollo alternativo como los conocimientos y las prácticas
locales, la pobreza, el género, el medio ambiente y el desarrollo sostenible, y con
debates recientes como la migración forzada, el conflicto y el cambio climático”. El
volumen incluye un debate autobiográfico entre Ragnhild y Michael Jones sobre su vida
y carrera desde la mitad de la década de los 70. Los capítulos centrados en temas de
género están listados en la siguiente sección de artículos y capítulos de libro.
Felicitamos a Ragnhild por este volumen que le rinde tributo.
Felicitaciones a Nazgol Bagheri (Universidad de Texas, San Antonio) quien ha recibido
el Premio a la Mejor Tesis 2013 por la Universidad de Missouri-Kansas, habiendo sido
seleccionada por la Escuela Universitaria de Estudios de Posgrado de entre un grupo
altamente competitivo de solicitantes. Su tesis se titula “Modernizando el Espacio
Público: Identidades de Género, Múltiples Modernidades y Espacios Políticos en
Teheran”. Nazgol presentó también su investigación en el Congreso Regional de la UGI
en Kyoto (2013).
La damos la enhorabuena a Carolin Schurr quien ha recibido el Premio Latino América
para tesis realizadas en universidades suizas por su trabajo “Haciendo política, creando
espacios: una etnografía visual del cambio político en Ecuador”. El premio está valorado
en 6.000 francos suizos.
Más de 60 ponencias y/o paneles de la Asociación Americana de Geografía fueron
patrocinadas o copatrocinadas por el Grupo Especial de Perspectivas Geográficas
sobre Mujeres. Entre los grupos especiales copatrocinados estaban los de Sexualidad y
Espacio, Geografía del Desarrollo, Ecología Cultural y Política, Geografía
Latinoamericana, Geografía Rural e Historia y Geografía. Además de la representación
de Estados Unidos, había también geógrafos y geógrafas de Australia, Brasil, Canadá,
India, los Países Bajos, Nueva Zelanda, España y el Reino Unido. Podéis acceder a la

Felicitaciones a Karen Schwiter y a sus colegas, quienes han sido premiadas por la
Fundación Científica Nacional de Suiza con la subvención de más de un año para el
proyecto “Paternidad y maternidad prevista y trayectorias laborales. La interrelación de
los planes familiares y de la carrera profesional de los jóvenes adultos y sus
implicaciones en la segregación ocupacional de género”. El proyecto se lleva a cabo en
el Centro de Estudios de Género de la Universidad de Basilea desde junio 2014 a
diciembre 2016. Karen (Universidad de Zúrich) está actualmente pasando un semestre
investigando en Vancouver.
