Why Psychology
in Marburg?
The Department
The main focus of Psychology in Marburg lies on four advanced teaching
areas, which build up on broad basic studies in psychology:
Biological Psychology and Neuropsychology
■
Those who wish to aquire an integrated perspective on human behaviour
from the viewpoint of neuroscience and social science should study
Psychology in Marburg.
Our Department provides up-to-date lab facilities: Cognition and EEG,
fMRI facility in the Medical Department, conditioning and pupillometry,
biofeedback, emotion and psychophysiology, psychoacoustics, neurobiological animal research, child observation unit, behaviour assessment for
the study of social conflicts.
A solid grounding in psychological assessment and intervention ensures
that Psychology in Marburg offers excellent conditions for training as Child
and Youth Counsellor, School Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist, Industrial
and Organisational Psychologist. The Department also features an Outpatient Clinic, a post graduate Institute for Psychotherapy, and an Assessment and Counselling Centre for Gifted Children.

Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy

special emphasis on the assessment and intervention in psychological and somatizing disorders, prevention programmes and
social support, psychotherapy, health psychology
Economic, Industrial and Organisational Psychology
■
special emphasis on economic decision making, psychological
processes in organisations, training and behaviour modification
at the workplace, sources and prevention of interpersonal and
intergroup conflicts.
Doctoral students might be interested in joining one of our two graduate
schools (Brain and Behaviour, Group Related Enmity).
University and Town
Landgrave Philipp founded the university in 1527 as the first Protestant

German language courses on all levels are offered in Marburg on a low
cost basis. Preparation for the entrance examination requires about 800
teaching hours. Doctoral students require a good command of German or
English.
A limited number of places in residence halls (fully equipped
rooms for singles and apartments for couples) are available.

The student cafeteria offers a variety of very good low budget
meals throughout the day.
There are no tuition fees, but students are required to pay a
semester fee that covers subsidies for meals and housing and
includes a ticket for public transport in and around Marburg.

Internationalisation has always been a matter of course. Currently more
than 12% of the student population are foreign nationals.
The University is an integral part of the scenic town of Marburg situated on
the river Lahn 100 km north of Frankfurt. The town with its 80,000 inhabitants (approx. 50,000 in the centre) is dominated by the castle on the hill, its
18,000 students and about 6,000 people working for the university. A saying
goes "Other towns have a university, Marburg is a university". It reflects the
unique historic atmosphere. Wherever you are in the town, you are part of a
vibrant academic community.
