highlight THE MANNERISM AND THE BAROQUE STYLES The Department of Cultural Affairs yearly opens an exhibition celebrating the World Heritage Day. The Direction of Services of Cultural Heritage has conceived a display under the theme of two great art movements: the Mannerism and the Baroque. “Get acquainted with Cultural Heritage: The Mannerism and the Baroque styles – From modest movements to exuberant volumes” opens on April 18th at the Sala dos Arcos - Colégio dos Jesuítas and may be visited until the 17th of June. The exhibition aims to highlight the potential of local Heritage as a privileged instrument of our educational system in the development of its student’s knowledge and skills. The exhibition is divided in two parts. A theoretical one, linked to the framework of the seasons and concepts of both artistic styles, and a practical one, where visitors can apply the concepts previously explained. The International World Heritage Day was created by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) on April 18th of 1982 and approved by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in the following year. This celebration aims to raise public awareness towards the diversity and vulnerability of cultural assets, as well as the effort involved in its protection and preservation. 2 exhibitions “Interpretations” Until April 9th Linogravura Exhibiton by Illimar Paul Mouraria Art Gallery Rua da Mouraria, 38 - Funchal Teephone.: 291 235 385 Monday to Friday: 5p.m. – 8p.m. Saturday: 10.30a.m. – 1.30p.m. [email protected] Drawing and painting exhibition by Maurício Fernandes Until April 10th Cultural Centre Anjos Teixeira Rua da Carreira, 137 – Funchal Telephone: 291 225 511 Monday to Friday: 4p.m. to 6p.m. exhibitions “Navegando com a 7.ª Arte” Until April 10th Documentary exhibition Casa da Cultura de Santana Sítio do Barreiro – Santana Telephone: 291 570 140 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday Friday and Sunday: 2p.m. – 7p.m. Org.: INATEL Foundation – Delegation of Funchal “Around the corner of the new Millennium” Until April 22nd Painting exhibition by Telmo Lima Centro Cívico do Estreito de Câmara de Lobos Largo do Patim - Estreito de Câmara de Lobos Telephone: 291 910 040 Monday to Friday: 10a.m. – 7p.m. “The Art of V for Vendetta” Until April 25th By David Lloyd Sequential Art Casa das Mudas Arts Centre Vale dos Amores – Calheta Telephone: 291 820 900 Tuesday to Sunday: 10a.m. – 1p.m.; What happens when a maid convinces her own boss on the eve of his première that he’s a terrible actor? He kills himself? Dismisses the employee? Or simply does not show up on at the theatre and without his awareness provides her with an opportunity to take his place in the play “I am them – we do about everything to pay the rent, don’t we?” This is the story if Lucineide (the name of the dangerous employee), who was once an actress and had the guts to do anything to discourage her boss from performing, exclusively for the opportunity of going back on stage. She is certain about her talent and that success results from a combination of innate abilities with a large share of luck. 13 municipality of culture “we do about everything to pay the rent, don’t we?” municipality of culture Updated information on: http://www.cm-machico.pt “I Am Them” municipality of culture April 1st and 2nd – 9p.m. Text & performance: Eduardo Gaspar Staging: Hugo Sovelas Machico Forum Org.: Machico City Hall and Department of Cultural Affairs National exhibition – “Portuguese tiles” April 1st to August 31st In partnership with the Portuguese National Tile Museum Solar do Ribeirinho Org.: Machico City Hall and Portuguese National Tile Museum “Idols of our (en) chant” April 2nd – 9p.m. Chamber choir and clarinet ensemble Machico Forum Org.: Machico City Hall and Madeira’s Department of Artistic Education International Children’s Book Day April 5th Different activities will be held by the Municipalities Schools Machico Municipal Library Org.: Machico City Hall 14 Theatre performance by the Madeira Music Conservatory – School of Fine Arts Students April 7th – at 3.30p.m. and at 9p.m. Machico Forum Free admission Org.: Machico City Hall and Madeira Music Conservatory – School of Fine Arts Madeira Music Conservatory presents: Classical Music Auditions with the students of Machico’s Conservatory Delegation April 8th – 7p.m. Machico Forum Free admission Org.: Machico City Hall and Madeira Music Conservatory – School of Fine Arts municipality of culture “Voices of the City” – 13th Edition 2nd and 3rd Rounds April 9th and 24th – 9p.m. April 9th Município Square – Machico April 24th Largo do Chafariz – Porto da Cruz Org.: Machico City Hall and Amigos da Música “MachicArtes” April 23rd – 8p.m. Machico Forum Org.: Machico City Hall and Machico Theatre Group Leisure activity: “Write your own music” April 28th – 3p.m. to 6p.m. Machico Municipal Library Org.: Machico City Hall, Municipal Library - Baú de Leitura project and FNAC Cinema – Selection of the best movies in the Islands.Doc Festival April 29th and 30th Machico Forum Org.: Machico City Hall and Global Arts Centre 15 archives and libraries Calouste Gulbenkian Municipal Library Municipal Theatre Baltazar Dias Avenida Arriaga - Funchal Phone: 291 227251 Monday to Friday: 9a.m. to 12.30p.m. and from 2p.m. to 7p.m. Câmara de Lobos Municipal Library Avenida da Autonomia, 5 - Câmara de Lobos Phone: 291910130 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 10a.m. - 6p.m. archives and libraries Wednesdays: 1p.m. – 6p.m. Documentation Centre Porta 33 Porta 33 Associação Quebra Costas Contemporary Art Centre Rua do Quebra Costas, 33 - Funchal Phone: 291 743038 Tuesday to Saturday: 4p.m. to 8p.m. (Other schedules require advance booking) www.porta33.com European Affairs Library CERNE - “Casa da Europa na Madeira” Rua Latino Coelho, 57, 3º - Funchal Phone: 291 235545 Monday to Friday: 9a.m. to 12p.m. and from 2p.m. to 5.30p.m. Fernando Augusto Theatre-theca Theatre and Performative Art’s Library Teatro Experimental do Funchal Rua do Hospital Velho, 42 - Funchal Phone: 291 226747 / 91 3035458 Monday to Friday: 4p.m. to 7p.m. (It requires advance booking) www.tef.pt 16 Foreign Culture’s Library Quinta Magnólia Rua Dr. Pita - Funchal Phone: 291 226414 Monday to Friday: 9a.m. to 5.30p.m. www.culturede.com Funchal’s Municipal Library Avenida Calouste Gulbenkian, 9 - Funchal Phone: 291 720137 Monday to Friday from 10a.m. to 7p.m. http://bmfunchal.blogs.sapo.pt John Dos Passos Library Cultural Centre John Dos Passos Rua Príncipe D.
