1.History, Culture and more
History
The history of Portugal dates back to the Early Middle Ages. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it
ascended to the status of a World power during Europe's "Age of Discovery" as it built up a vast empire,
including possessions in South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Over the following two centuries,
Portugal kept most of its colonies, but gradually lost much of its wealth and status as the Dutch, English, and
French took an increasing share of the spice and slave trades by surrounding or conquering the widelyscattered Portuguese trading posts and territories.
The name "Portugal" derives from a Roman or pre-Roman settlement called Portus Cale (the modern
city of Porto) near the mouth of the Douro River. The Romans referred to this region as the province of
Lusitania, and the prefix Luso (meaning "Portuguese") is still used in some contexts. In the ninth century,
during the reconquest (714–1140 C.E. ), Christian forces dominated the area between the Minho River,
which forms the border of modern Portugal in the north, and the Douro River, and the region became known
as Territorium Portucalense . In 1095, the king of Castile and Leon granted Portucale (northern Portugal) to
a Burgundian count. Despite the diversity of invading populations and distinct regional economies and ways
of living, Portugal is a homogeneous nation with a single national cultural identity and no ethnolinguistic
groups.
Portugal is a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Organisation
for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD), and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). It
entered the European Community (now the European Union) in 1986.
Viseu is a city and municipality in the Centro Region of Portugal and the capital of the district of the
same name, with a population of 99,274 inhabitants and center of the Viseu Dão Lafões intermunipical
community, with 267,633 inhabitants.
Settled during the period of the early Iberian castro culture, the territory of Viseu was populated by a
series of cultures, that include the Romans, Suebs, Visigoths and Moors. During the Roman occupation of
Iberia, Viriathus, rebel leader of the Lusitanians, is assumed to have lived for a time in territory. During the
Middle Ages, the city often served as seat for Visigothic nobles (such as King Roderic), and is considered
one of the probable birthplaces of Afonso Henriques, first King of Portugal.Viseu is a regional economic
hub with a strong wine industry and is the seat of international conglomerate Visabeira. Similarly, the city is
a cultural center, home to the nationally-acclaimed Grão Vasco Museum, seat of the Roman Catholic
Diocese of Viseu, and pole of national universities, including the Catholic University of Portugal.

Culture
Portuguese culture is based on a past that dates back to prehistoric times and has been heavily
influenced by a rich variety of countries and customs over the years. The eras of the Roman and Moorish
invasions as well as the ancient societies before that have all left their traces in a rich legacy of
archaeological remains that can be found throughout Portugal.
The ancient cave paintings at Escoural, the Roman township of Conímbriga, the Temple of Diana
in Évora and the typical Moorish architecture of the southern towns Olhão and Tavira are just some
examples of extraordinary cultural gems that can be found in the country.
Throughout the centuries, Portugal's arts have been enriched by foreign influences, including
Flemish, French and Italian. The voyages of the Portuguese discoverers opened the country to Oriental
inspiration and the revelation of Brazil's wealth of gold and jewels fed the Baroque flame in decoration.
Portugal has a huge cultural heritage that is just waiting to be discovered.
In Viseu, despite all the good traditional food that you need to try, you can find Museu Grão
Vasco, Casa Museu Almeida Moreira, Museu de Arte Sacra, Casa da Ribeira, Eco Museu Torredeita,
Museu Etnográfico de Silgueiros, Museu Etnográfico de Vila Chã de Sá, Solar do vinho do Dão, Museu
do Quartzo, Museu Municipal, Museu Etnográfico da Cava de Viriato, Teatro Viriato, Pavilhão Multiusos
de Viseu e Auditório Mirita Casimiro.

2.Why do you have to choose Portugal?
Imagine living in a country where there is a great diversity of landscapes and environments at short
distances: beaches with sand out of sight, mountains and golden plains, vibrant and cosmopolitan cities
and an ancient heritage.
Here you can enjoy water sports, play golf on the best courses in the world, contemplating nature,
experience the latest in wellness treatments or go to the discovery of heritage, wine and an unparalleled
cuisine. As for the climate, our winters are mild and the summer is warm and dry.
The Portuguese are gracious and welcoming, and receive all visitors, from whatever source. And in fact,
come from various parts of the world as the country is situated on the west coast of Europe, is therefore, a
gateway into the Schengen area. Much of the population speaks foreign languages, namely English.
Portugal has an excellent geographical location. The convergence of three continents - Europe, Africa and
America - has always been a central point in the most important international routes. Here you will find
international airports across the country - Lisbon, Faro and Porto have regular connections to major cities
in the world.
Did you know that Lisbon is only two hours and a half flight from Paris or London? If you want to
discover the beauties of Portugal, know that the country is served by a modern network of land routes: if
from Lisbon will take only two hours to Porto and Faro, the main cities of the north and south of Portugal,
and about six hours until Madrid.
Portugal is the 17th most peaceful country in the world in a sample of 153 countries (Global Peace Index
2011) and ranks 32nd out of 182 countries in Transparency International (Corruption Perception Index
2011).
In 2010, the European Consumers Choice Awards ranked Lisbon (the capital) as "Best Destination 2010"
and in 2011, one of 42 cities was elected in the world with higher quality of life for the Worldwide Quality
of Living Survey 2011. Viseu was for 2 years in a row, voted best city to live in Portugal. For most
foreigners, the cost of living is considered low.

5. Weak and strong points of our culture
Potuguese people are really friendly and always there to help me. They always smile to you even if
you are a stranger. But there is something that I noticed.. Is that they don’t think a lot before do
something, like they start to built a house but they will never finish it because of the money maybe.
And also they make the thing quickly and without thinking about the future. The culture is really
religious, there are a lot of churches and monuments in every city. The people are not stressed, they
take time to do things.
Portugal culture is such a rooted and rich culture, of course. whıle you are tasting a lot of diffirent
wine you can listen live Fado music.and you diffinetly can not camplaın for this situatıon. Football
is very importand too for portuguese people. When you enter at tipical portuguese cafe probably
you are gonna see the people they are watchıng fotboll as well. I have no world to explaın how
much is delicious and unforgettable portuguese food ... and ocean ... foz... tile art... night life ....
warm and helpful portuguese people and naturel, green areas.... for me it was not difficult to adapt
their culture. beouse everythıng was so good except cold fish smell.
