Alvaro Henrique - Biography
Alvaro Henrique has as his main artistical goal to share his passion for music, and has
done so by making concerts and recordings, making new works known, collaborating
with composers, enhancing classical music audiences, and sharing experiences with
music students.
He has shared his love for music with audiences in Brazil and abroad, including
venues such as the III Festival Nacional de Violao do Piauí (Brazil), the Festival de
Musica Classica Contemporanea de Lima (Peru), the Sergio Igor Chnee
International Festival (Finland), and solo performances in several countries.
Mr Henrique has represented the Brazilian culture abroad, playing in Peru, Jamaica,
Mozambique, Namibia, Ireland, England, Greece, Germany, Finland and Switzerland,
featuring national works, specially by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Cesar Guerra-Peixe.
He has premiered new works, and made the first world recording of Sighs (Jorge
Antunes), the solo guitar works of Claudio Santoro, the Suite for Guitar (Ernest
Mahle), the Cinco Intermezzos (Celso Mojola), among others. Has also motived
composers to write new works, and from this partnership resulted Gegensatz (Oliver
Thedieck), the Concertino para Violão e Grupo de Sopros e Percussão (Calimerio
Soares), and others.
Aware of the importance of enhancing the classical music audience, he has worked
on projects such as the CCBNB Audience Broadening Course, in Fortaleza, and
is Founder Presidente of the Guitar Society of Brasilia (BRAVIO), institution which
since 2005 promotes monthly free or low cost instrumental music events.
Has helped music students to reach their dreams by teaching lessons, giving lectures
and writing articles that, besides giving tools for the students to play better, aid them
to begin their musical career, as in the lectures in Brasilia about career planning for
musicians and the articles published at the Violao Pro Magazine on how to schedule
one's first recitals. He has also shared his experiences and knowledge in several
sites, magazines, and radio and TV shows.
In August 2009, Alvaro Henrique returned to Brazil after studies in Germany
under Franz Halasz. He has made performances after the 50th anniversary of
Brasilia with commissioned works by Jorge Antunes, Mario Ferraro and Carlos
Alberto da Silva written for the occasion. He is currently Guitar Professor at
the Universidade Federal de Uberlandia and prepares a Master in Music course at
the Universidade de Brasilia, researching about the expressive performance of
unpremiered compositions.
Alvaro Henrique – Reviews
In Alvaro Henrique’s music there were beautiful melodies, the life of music and the
streets, humour and drama. And all was made with a gentle smile, benefiting his
mainly gentle music. As he played, even the kids heard him on silence.

Correio Braziliense
The guitarist Alvaro Henrique performed an ecletic, very demanding, and high level
program, and talked informally with the audience which, showing great interest, asked
questions. A concert that pleased.

Alvaro Henrique – Suggested Programs
Complete Solo Guitar Works by Heitor Villa-Lobos
An unique feature of the artist, as Alvaro Henrique has been the only Brazilian to play
this repertoire this century. Enjoy in one evening all the works Heitor Villa-Lobos wrote
for the most Brazilian of the musical instruments. On this program one can appreciate
the virtuosity of the 12 Studies, the lyrical melodies of the 5 Preludes and the naïve
character of the Suite Popular Brasileira, listening on the same evening the African,
native Indian and European influence on the music of Brazil’s most known composer.
Time: 80 minutes (suggested 40 min, pause and 40 min)
Brazilian Guitar: beyond Villa-Lobos
This program has three versions: one with only classical music, one with only popular
music and the third with classical and popular music. For this last version, a 90
minutes concert with break is recommended, while for the others 60 minutes without a
break.
This concert displays a dialogue between Villa-Lobos’ music and by classical and/or
popular composers who were influenced by him. The popular version includes works
by Garoto, Radames Gnatalli and Paulo Bellinati, and the classical version includes
works by Guerra-Peixe and Mario Ferraro.
Time: 30 to 90 min. Above 60 minutes a break is suggested.
Complete Solo Guitar Works by Cesar Guerra-Peixe
Another repertoire few artists may offer. Guerra-Peixe is one of the best Brazilian
composers of the last half of the 20th century, and his work mixes the avant-garde
with the folklore in a way that, for Alvaro Henrique, resembles the work of painter
Candido Portinari. We can hear in this program the joy of the folklore with the
harshness of the German expressionism creating an intense, rough and unforgettable
work. As Villa-Lobos’, Guerra-Peixe influenced classical and popular composers, in
special Edino Krieger, Claudio Santoro, and the Armorial movement, which its main
artist is Ariano Suassuna.
Time: 60 min, no break.
Brasilia, Brazil
A selection of works by Brazilian composers, including pieces written for Alvaro
Henrique to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Brasilia. The program is a short travel
through Brazil`s history, which may include the earliest concert guitar pieces written by
the Italians who migrated to Brazil, to compositions which reflect the modernity of the
new Brazilian capital. Special mention is made to the “Little Suite from Brasilia”, a fivemovement work which describes some characteristics of Brazil’s capital (such as its
astounding sunset or the fragile beauty of its dry flowers), and the “Great Fantasita
Triomphale on the Brazilian National Anthem”, a set of virtuosic variations on Brazil’s
national anthem written for the piano by Louis Moreau Gottschalk and arranged for
the guitar by Alvaro Henrique.
Time: 30 to 90 min. Above 60 minutes a break is suggested.
Guitar and Tape
This performance requires another musician to control the sound diffusion. Preference
is made to a musician who already works with Alvaro Henrique, but a local musician
may be used if she/he has previous experience. The following equipament is also a
minimal requirement: sound player or notebook, mixer, active microphone with a
power source, 2 sound amps for the audience and 2 sound amps for the musician.
One more unique program Alvaro Henrique can offer. This program includes works by
Steve Reich, Jorge Antunes and Carlos Alberto da Silva. It is an unique opportunity to
hear the classical guitar “pumped up” by the technology resources. Special mention to
“Brasilia 50”, by Jorge Antunes and written for Alvaro Henrique. Each movement of
this piece depicts an historical event which took place in the 50 early years of Brasilia,
which includes the death of John Kennedy, the man landing on the moon, and
Brazilian military dictatorship cruelties. The tape recordings include excerpts of
interviews, speeches and songs which help to understand the historical event being
depicted.
Time: 15 to 60 min, no break
Melodia
An evening with different ways of writing melodies. The program includes works with
opera-like features, folk song simple melodies, pieces with more than one melody at
the same time, variations on a melody, and even a work with no melody at all – to our
surprise, often this is the one the audience loves more!
Time: 30 to 90 min. Above 60 minutes a break is suggested.
Virtuositá
The highest of what can be considered virtuoso guitar playing. Special mention to
Kazuhito Yamashita’s arrangement of Moussorgski’s “Pictures of an Exhibition”. This
arrangement, which reduces for one guitar all the resources of an orchestra, is so
demanding of the interpreter so much that nowadays only three musicians on the
whole work perform it live – and Alvaro Henrique is one of them.
Time: 40 to 90 min. Above 60 minutes a break is suggested.
Pocket Orchestra
It is attributed to Hector Berlioz the description of the guitar as a pocket orchestra. And
some guitarists, on their turn, call the guitar the “ambassador of the classical music”.
The purpose of this concert is to bring some of the orchestral repertoire for audiences,
halls, or events which don’t receive orchestras often. Special mention to Kazuhito
Yamashita’s arrangement of Moussorgski’s “Pictures of an Exhibition”. This
arrangement, which reduces for one guitar all the resources of an orchestra, is so
demanding of the interpreter so much that nowadays only three musicians on the
whole work perform it live – and Alvaro Henrique is one of them.
Time: 40 to 90 min. Above 60 minutes a break is suggested.
Masterpieces
Great composers, great works. This program aims to show the best of the guitar
repertoire. A great suggestion for audiences used to listening to classical music, in
special piano recitals and orchestral concerts.
Time: 30 to 90 min. Above 60 minutes a break is suggested.
Guitar Favourites
The most famous guitar pieces. Spain is a must-be on this program with the most
known guitar pieces; ideal for audiences who like the guitar but don’t often attend
piano recitals or orchestral concerts.
Time: 30 to 90 min. Above 60 minutes a break is suggested.
Hommage and Inspiration
Some masterpieces came to life by honouring other composers. This program focuses
on pieces which were inspired by other pieces. Depending on the available time, it will
be possible to play music by the composer who is being honoured and right after the
masterpiece inspired by it. Special mention to the Villa-Lobos’ “5 Preludios”, work who
honours the Brazilian countrymen, the choro, J. S. Bach, the Native Indian, and the
Rio de Janeiro Social Life.
Time: 30 to 90 min. Above 60 minutes a break is suggested.
Bachiana Brasileira
J. S. Bach is among the greatest composers ever, and his music influences several
composers. Many Brazilian composers were inspired by his music, be it the classical
Villa-Lobos or the popular Baden Powell. This program shows the music of Bach on a
replica of a baroque theorboed guitar and some Brazilian composers who were
influenced by him.
Time: 40 to 90 min. Above 60 minutes a break is suggested.
Alvaro Henrique – Lectures
For musicians:
Study Techniques for Musicians – Lecture (60 to 120 min.) or Course (8 to 12
hours).
For instrumentalists and singers, the lecture shows how to study better in less time. It
will include right and wrong study techniques, strategies and how they fit a purpose,
study planning and mental study. On the course it is possible to get deeper in to the
theme and make practical lessons. The bibliography includes academic research on
music cognition and books by world renowned musicians and teachers.
Beginning a Musical Career – Lecture (30 to 120 minutes).
For professionals-to-be or musicians in the early stages of their careers. It mentions
some requirements for a great start in the market, specially the classical music one.
The content includes ethics and professional etiquette, ideology for the success, how
to make promo material (photo, recording, bio), organizing the first performances, and
making a living as a classical soloist even in a third-world country.
Career Planning for Musicians – Lecture (30 to 120 min) or course (4 hours).
For musicians in the early stages of their careers. Let’s talk about how to create a map
to guide and manage one’s career, focusing on goals, strategies, timetables and
managing skills. On the course it will be possible to elaborate a career planning as an
example.
Reaching out the Musical Expressivity – Lecture (30 to 120 minutes).
The lecture mentions how Gestalt and music cognition concepts , especially Leonard
Meyer’s, David Huron’s and John Slobodas’, can be used to create an expressive
performance, and how they can be applied to the performance of different musical
styles. Alvaro Henrique researched this theme on his Master in Music.
For musicians and non-musicians:
Be an Expert – Lecture (20 to 60 minutes).
What makes some people reach the top of their field, while even more talented ones
fall on the way? With that question in mind, this lecture is about which choices may
lead to success, and how the minds of the experts work. Bibliography includes
academic research by Karl Anders Ericsson and others.
Art Appreciation: The Musical Discourse – Didactic Concert (30 to 60 minutes)
Part live performance, part lecture, this didactic concert aims to show how intertwined
are the way musical ideas are organized with other fields, especially logic and
rhetoric. Music will be used to explain the dialectical discourse, the Aristotelian logic,
and some rhetorical figures of speech such as the explicatio and the prolatio.
Art Appreciation: Brazilian History through the Guitar – Didactic concert (30 to
90 minutes), Course (2 to 8 hours)
The guitar is so part of the Brazilian identity that it is the only country of the world
which gives it a unique name: violao. Using the guitar as an entry point to look at
Brazil itself, this concert which is part lecture, part live performance, talks about
historical events which shaped Brazil as we know it and shows how they influenced
their guitar music. For a shorter didactic concert, it is suggested to focus on a specific
time period.
