The University of Minho Student Union (AAUM) was founded in 1977, following University of Minho students’ demands and needs.
It is know as being managed by students for students.
AAUM was the second Portuguese association to receive the government title of Institution of Public Utility. Nowadays, it is one
of the biggest student unions in the country, with two headquarters, one in each University of Minho campi: Gualtar (Braga) and
Azurém (Guimarães).
The students union is composed of several departments such as Cultural, Administrative, Informatics and Sport amongst others,
with the intention of assisting students in many different ways.
Sport is an important department, considering the fact that in Portugal, national University sport competition is based on student
union representation.
AAUM has led the Portuguese University Sport national ranking for many years with several national titles and with University of
Minho students having taken part in FISU, EUSA and other international events. In 2006 and 2007 the Handball team was 2nd
placed in the European University Handball Championships winning the first points to Portugal in the European University Ranking.

FISU PRESIDENT
MESSAGE
Mensagem do Presidente da FISU
Dear Friends
You are gathered here in Braga today to take part in, or witness, the 10th World University Badminton
Championship 2008.
The International University Sports Federation and the Portuguese University Sports Federation thank you for
coming, and hope you will find the conditions here welcoming and right for your sport.
This championship, organised under the aegis of FISU, is part of our association's magnificent 2008 programme.
Some 32 championships are to be held this year, each in a different country and for a different sport.
Since the beginning of the sixties, more than 250 of such championships have been staged, covering a broad
range of disciplines. These biennial events, whose popularity has continued to grow over the years, lend
continuity to the programme of our federation. They also enable a large number of students and University
sport directors to exchange ideas outside of the Universiades.
As for 2006, 28 World University Championships, with 5852 participants, were each held in a different place
for a different sport. FISU is very proud of the enthusiasm these competitions generated among our member
associations.
FISU actively follows and supports these events, enabling student-athletes from all countries to meet in a
spirit of understanding and peace that contributes to the achievement of high-level technical results. If
performance naturally remains the primary concern of all athletes taking part in these championships, clearly
this pursuit implies a spirit of openness and curiosity towards those against whom they seek to measure
themselves.
In this sense, your presence here is already an achievement in its own right.
In the name of the International University Sports Federation, I wish you success and I hope that this experience
is a memorable one.
George E. Killian
FISU President
Estimados Amigos,
Badminton 2008.
A Federação Internacional do Desporto Universitário e a Federação de Desporto Universitário Português
membro.

RECTOR MESSAGE
Mensagem do Reitor da Universidade do Minho
Dear Friends,
The 10th World University Badminton Championship held in Braga, this year of 2008, is the first sports event
formally recognized by the Portuguese Government as a “sports event of national public relevance”.
The unique value of international university athletics lies in its potential to enhance education through
engagement in sport. It can contribute to the personal development of athletes, it can form a focus of campus
community for other students, and it can create bonds of shared loyalties to educational institutions among
students, alumni, faculty, and broader communities. It is also a road for the internationalization of academies.
I welcome all the teams, the athletes and the officials to our University, wish them a pleasant stay and a
Championship that will remain in your memories as a reference for fair and excellent competition, as well as
for friendship.
It is an honour to host these games.
Good luck to you all.
António Guimarães Rodrigues
University of Minho’s Rector
Estimados Amigos,
