Translation of the video lesson
This is lesson 7 of the Blues Lead Guitar series. We are going to be looking at five “licks”
(phrases) that come from Position 2. They are mostly based around the Minor
Pentatonic, in fact I think they are all based around the Minor Pentatonic. No additional
notes used. They will get you used to the feeling of what notes you can bend and where
the curls should come.

Again, as I have explained in previous lessons, you want to get the “lick” (phrase)
down, then you want to practice incorporating that lick as much as you can. Just using
one or two licks for a whole five minute backing track making sure you get all of those
things sounding “sweet” (good), and experiment with the variations of those licks, as I
explained earlier. It is very important that you learn the lick and then you learn how to
twist the licks around so they become your own creations if you like.

So, before we go to a close up and I show you each lick I am just going to go through
and play them all for you one at a time. The first lick that we have got here, those of
you using my Really Useful Blues Solos pack might recognise this one. It's an Albert
King style lick. And it sounds like this . . . Very nice little lick. Pretty straight forward.
Just using that really common little box at the top there . . . So with that one we are
using a bend, we are having to use a curl and a bit of vibrato. It's a good one. That's
number one.

Number two, again might be recognised from the Really Useful Blues Solos pack, in the
style of Eric Clapton. It's in a different key on that pack. It works as a really nice little
starter for your solo . . . And again . . . Nice little slide up, using an unusual finger for
the slide, which is a good thing. And working your vibrato. Like I said it's a nice one to
kick off your solo or to move positions, which is also another lesson.

OK, number three. You can play this one lots of different ways. This one incorporates a
roll. So we end up with this . . . So we get a big bend . . . Then we have got a . . . little
roll there at the end and finishing with a curl . . . Very tasty little lick that one.

Number four, we have got a little repeating pattern. Good for working on your hammer
ons and flick offs. I will play it slowly, but this lick also works quite fast once you get it
down. Let me just play it for you nice and slow . . . As I said this one can go pretty
quick . . . It works as a very nice repeating lick which is always a good thing to have in
your “repertoire” (skills).

And number five, again using a hammer on and pull off thing. But also an interesting
twist on the old bending trick here. We have got . . . So this time we have got little
hammer ons . . . Which we have to learn to roll with the first finger. And to finish we
have got quite an interesting bend, where we bend it up, release it, and then bend it
back up again. Bend it up, release it, and up.
So that's the five licks that we are going to be checking out. Let's get to a close up and
make sure you have got them exactly down.

OK, lick number one is starting here with the third finger on the tenth fret. We play up
the scale three notes . . . And then we do a full tone bend with the third finger at the
tenth fret . . . Making sure that we then mute the note while it is still bent up. Release
it, then we are playing the eighth fret with the first finger with a curl . . . And then
finishing back on the root note . . . And we play that lick nice and slow . . . And again . .
. Full speed . . . Try and get a nice vibrato on the end there using our standard form
vibrato.

OK, straight into lick number two. We are going to be starting here with the second
finger on the ninth fret. Now this is interesting because you are going to slide up to that
note. You don't need to think about where you slide from because it does not matter. It
is not a specific slide. You can start from two frets before, or three, or just one. It
doesn't really matter. I am going to start from two frets behind now, just so you can get
an idea but it doesn't really matter where you slide from.

To start with, just focus on where you are sliding to. So second finger, ninth fret, third
string . . . And then we have got the first finger . . . Roll . . . That's a nice roll there
going from the eighth fret of the second string to eighth fret of the first string. And then
third finger coming over to the root note . . . To end.

Number three is starting here with a big bend starting on the tenth fret. A big bend

down. Now put it down a little flatter than usual, here on the tenth fret of the thinnest
string because we are going to roll it over to play the tenth fret on the second string . . .

Here we go for lick number four. Lick number four is very “scalular” (??? leave as
English if needs be). Using the second finger down on the ninth fret there when we
come to it. We are starting here with the third finger on the tenth fret of the second
string. And we are going to flick that third finger off and play the note G with the first
finger on the same string . . . Then second finger is going to come over and play the
note E at the ninth fret . . . Back to the note G which is the eighth fret of the second
string, and then we hammer on the third finger . . . Eighth fret on the thinnest string . .
. Then ten, flick off to eight on the second string . . .
(Aqui vamos nós para o lick número quatro. O lick número quatro é muito “escalador”

And this works as a continuous patter. So I am just going to start doing this now really
slow . . . And again . . . Once you get it going and you are comfortable with that you
can start repeating it . . .

And the last lick we are checking out here is number five. Starting at the eighth fret,

have to use a roll there is because after that note it is rolling back onto the second
string. I am just going to cycle now the first six notes of this lick which is the main “gist”
(idea) of it. And you can repeat this in the real world as many times as you like. So it
will be . . .

I was exaggerating the roll there so you can see what I mean. Just a little faster . . .
Definitely worth practising that a little bit. Then we are finishing with our double bend.
So we are bending, relaxing then bending again. But without muting and without picking
it twice. Just one pick . . . Bend it up, relax it and then back up again . . .

Don't worry about the picking. The picking doesn't really matter, whether you are
picking up or down for those things. Don't be stressing “oh he didn't tell me whether to
pick with a down or an up” because it doesn't matter. Just play the licks. If you have
been practising your scale with alternate picking it should come out the right way.

Make sure again you take each lick one at a time and put it into a solo and practice
using it. Don't let it be a lick that you just learn as an individual thing. Try and work it
into your playing so hopefully it will come out naturally. Really important. I already
explained that before in a previous lesson.
