highlight THE “FESTA”, THE “LAPINHA” AND THE TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS CRIBS The “Festa” is a local expression that refers to the approaching of the Christmas season! It’s the time when all the preparations to live one of the most significant festivities of the year are finished and one of the periods most celebrated by locals. Through the streets wonder new colours and aromas and people’s movement intensifies, while around the archipelago everyone relives the Madeiran traditions. The traditional “Lapinha”, greatest symbol of the Madeiran “Festa” may be seen in almost every corner, sometimes associated and featuring either ancient or modern Christmas cribs. Whether in Funchal or in any other locality, it’s possible to find an endless number of “Lapinhas” and Christmas cribs. Beyond the traditional entrainment during this period in downtown Funchal, mainly at Avenida Arriaga, there also are many exhibitions worth attending until the end of January 2013. The Madeira Ethnographic Museum, in Ribeira Brava, the Madeira Regional Archives, in partnership with the Madeira’s Regional Public Library, and the House-Museum Frederico de Freitas, in Funchal, suggest quite interesting and different ways of celebrating this season, combining traditional and contemporary. Surely, good reasons to go around and carry on living and celebrating our traditionally Madeiran “Festa”. 2 exhibitions “Weaving threads and dreams…” Until December 9 Coordination e texts: Lídia Góes Ferreira Photography: Florêncio Pereira/ Rui Camacho Madeira Ethnographic Museum – Temporary Exhibitions Room Rua de São Francisco, 24 - Ribeira Brava Telephone: 291 952 598 Tuesday to Friday: 9.30am – 5.00pm Saturday to Sunday: 10.00am – 12.30pm; 1.30pm – 5.30pm; “Linen and wool tools, the origins and essence of Madeira’s Rural Settlement” & “Traditional Costumes of Madeira Archipelago” Until December 31 Exhibitions within the 47th Anniversary celebrations of the Boa Nova Folklore and Ethnographic Group Museological Nucleus of “Popular Art” Civic Center of Santa Maria Maior - Rua das Murteiras, 25-B – Funchal Telephone: 291 238 185 Monday to Friday: 10.00am – 12.30pm; 2.00pm – 5.30pm Org.: Boa Nova Folklore and Ethnographic Group “Winds of the mind … Looks from the Heart” Until January 3 Painting exhibition by Schalk W. It was frequently hired for concerts and recordings. It’s a piano of great historical importance in Portugal, considering that several recordings of Beethoven’s sonatas made by Sequeira Costa were performed in this piano, and in which, Artur Pizarro also played while it was still in Lisbon. In Madeira and before its “settling down” at the Municipal Theatre Baltazar Dias, the instrument spent some years in Madeira Casino Auditorium, being unfortunately object of an “amateur recovery” after a flood. Finally, through the initiative and owing it to the good offices of Mr. Artur Pizarro, the Bechstein was entirely restored in a specialized company, in England, a process that DRAC entrusted to the Associação Amigos do Conservatório de Música da Madeira to follow-up and monitor. Recently, the Bechstein returned to Madeira and is currently going through a process of climate adaptation. Its opening concert is scheduled for January 27 at the Municipal Theatre Baltazar Dias, where the magical hands of its “godfather”, Artur Pizarro, will play a specific programme and introduce to the audience the best qualities of this instrument. So, for the first time and from now on, the Region will have available two concert pianos in improved conditions, a fact that will certainly cover an extensive range of possibilities in terms of musical programming in the Region. 10 music / dance “Christmas in Funchal” 15th Christmas Carols Choirs’ Competition December 27, 29 and 30 – 9.30pm December27 – Funchal’s Cathedral December 29 and 30 – Colégio Church Org.: Orfeão Madeirense New Year’s Concert January 5 – 7.15pm “Orfeão Madeirense” The Carmo Church Org.: Orfeão Madeirense conferences Note: we regret to inform that the following event is exclusively held in Portuguese language. 8th Colloquium CIE-UMa – “The Future of Public Schools” December 6 and 7 University of Madeira (UMa) – Auditorium Further information: 291 705 150; But, when he arrives, Madalena is very sad because her mother won’t be able to arrive on time for the Christmas meal. Cusca together with his friend Fantocha decide to bake a honey cake to cheer up Madalena.
