Cabin Crew Job Profile - Aviation English Brazil
Vocabulary Flight attendants or cabin crew (historically known as stewards/stewardesses or air hosts/hostesses) are members of an aircrew employed by airlines primarily to ensure the safety but also the comfort of passengers aboard commercial flights, on select business jet aircraft, and on some military aircraft. The role of a flight attendant is not restricted to customer service although it is part of ensuring that passengers have a pleasant journey, flight attendants are also trained to have a pivotal role in ensuring that safety and security regulations are followed as well as being capable of administering first aid, all of which are prioritised above customer service. The primary and overriding responsibility of flight attendants is passenger safety. The number of flight attendants follows from international safety regulations. For planes with up to 19 passenger seats, no flight attendant is needed. For larger planes one flight attendant per 50 passenger seats is needed. Flight Attendants are important people: they are responsible for making sure safety regulations are observed onboard their aircraft. They instruct passengers in the use of equipment like seat belts and oxygen masks and they’re trained to help passengers evacuate in the event of an emergency landing. All of that comes on top of greeting passengers, helping them find their seats and stow their bags, serving meals, and coping with turbulence, airsickness—and occasionally with disruptive travelers. Flight attendants are often attracted to the job by the opportunity to travel. That opportunity comes with the necessity of working nights, weekends, and holidays—especially early in the career, because most airlines allow flight attendants to bid for the most desirable routes based on their seniority. If you’re interested you should apply directly to the airline to find out about that particular company’s requirements for flight attendants. You should be in excellent health, be able to speak clearly, be able to keep your weight in proportion to your height, and willing to relocate. Many airlines look for college graduates, and for international service, the ability to speak at least one foreign language will give you an advantage. Then you can expect several weeks of intensive training and many months of serving as a substitute attendant. You need to project confidence, strength and graciousness—because for most passengers, the flight attendant is the face of the airline. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqVnXv-hnzU Airsickness – Enjoo em um avião All of that – Tudo isso Desirable – Desejável Disruptive – Bagunceiro(a) / Que tende à desordem Early – No começo / Cedo Hard work – Trabalho duro/pesado Health – Saúde Height – Altura Holidays – Feriados Landing – Pouso / Aterrissagem Most – A maioria Often – Frequentemente On the inside – Por dentro On the outside – Por fora Oxygen masks – Máscaras de oxigênio On top – Acima Requirements – Exigências Seat belts – Cintos de segurança To allow – Permitir To bid for – Propor / Ofertar To cope – Lidar / Enfrentar To find – Encontrar To find out – Descobrir To greet – Cumprimentar To look – Parecer To make sure – Certificar-se To travel – Viajar To stow – Guardar / Acomodar Weekends – Finais de semana Weight – Peso Willing to – Ter força de vontade Vocabulary :: FLIGHT ATTENDANTS – JOB DESCRIPTION VIDEO :: Listen to the audio file and fill the gaps with the correct words. I’m Peter Mayer and today I’m here with Shelly Walsh. She’s been a flight attendant for nearly 5 years at FlyBy Airlines and she is here to share with us a bit of her typical day as an air hostess. Shelly, good morning, how are you? Shelly: Good morning! I’m great, thanks! Peter: So, Shelly. Tell us a little bit about your daily activities as a flight attendant. Shelly: Well, we start by waking up really early in the morning. We get dressed, go to the airport to meet the crew, then we have a pre-flight briefing to check all the details for the upcoming flight, and after the meeting we all have specific duties on the airplane. We need to check the emergency equipment, count the meals onboard, clean the aircraft… Peter: And all of that before the passengers start to board the plane? Shelly: Correct. When the passengers board the plane, everything must be in order, so we can greet them all, help them find their seats and stow their luggage. After the plane takes off, we will make announcements and then start the in-flight service, so we will serve drinks and meals to the passengers and the flight crew. We also have to be prepared for any emergency situation that might occur during the flight. Peter: And what sort of training do you receive to deal with on board emergencies? Shelly: Once you are hired, you will get intensive trainings for all kind of emergency situations. We receive trainings on fire fighting, and first aid... bomb threats also. Peter: Wow! It sounds very demanding! Shelly: It really is, but it’s also a very rewarding role. Peter: Ok, thanks a lot for talking to us and I wish you a safe flight! Shelly: Thank you, Peter. Have a nice day!
