Some people think that writing well is a gift. Few know it is the net result of
hours of hard work and persistency. The twenty five pieces of writing you will
find in the third edition of Day by Day News were produced by students from
several different levels and ages who strove to improve the quality of their
texts. We hope you will enjoy reading articles, biographies of famous stars,
news, sports reports and thought-provoking stories.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate not only our young
writers but also our dedicated staff who diligently and professionally
motivated and helped our students with their work.
Have fun!

Stories of Mystery

Ghosts
The Haunted House
By FERNANDO NAKAMUTA – 16 – FCE
By ISABELA SVERNER – 13 – FCE
I am going to tell you about a very interesting story that
happened with a friend of mine called Steve. It happened
when Steve was only nine years old. He was a very healthy
and intelligent boy, he had a lot of friends and his parents
were very nice with him. You might be imagining that his life
was perfect but, unfortunately, he had a big problem with
ghosts.
Steve
had
always
believed in ghosts, he
used to see these
ghosts and for him they
were as real as anyone
else.
His parents took him to
all the doctors in his
city,
they
tried
everything but they
didn’t have any positive
result.
When their hope was almost over they found a very famous
ghost specialist. This man met Steve and said that it was a
very usual problem of children his age and that it would
disappear with time.
Steve turned 13 and the problem was still there, but the
ghosts didn’t scare him anymore. I asked him how he
eliminated this fear and he told me that one night when he
was going home, he saw the ghosts and without fear, Steve
turned his back on them and walked slowly into the house.
Steve turned his back on them and walked slowly into the
house. Lisa had said there were monsters in there, but he
wasn’t afraid, or at least he thought so.
He really wanted to show
everyone that he was brave
enough to go in the house they
had said was haunted. He
didn’t believe in these stories,
he needed to be brave. And
now that he started there was
no coming back. What would
Lisa think of him if he got out of
the
house
running
and
screaming like a baby?
Steve took a deep breath and opened the front door. It made
that strange sound of an old door being opened. He got in but
didn’t close the door so that he could still see the big hall with
a staircase at the end.
Tommy had said that the ball they had been playing with had
fallen upstairs. Steve inhaled and started climbing up. When
he got to the end he saw another hall, smaller this time, but
right next to a painting there was a broken window with a ball
below it.
He thought at first that it was too easy. He approached the
ball and was almost catching it when he heard something
moving behind him.
He turned around instinctively. “Hello?” It was all quiet again
and he got no answer. Now he was afraid. He was sure
something moved! Was he mad?
He turned again and caught the ball, but when he turned,
Lisa, Tommy and Bill were all there, wearing masks. Steve
almost died of fright!
The girl and the talking wind

Steve turned his back on them and walked slowly into the
house.
“-Steve!” - shouted his friend – “don’t go in it! You’ve heard
the strange voice! Do not go in…, do not dare me…”
No answer. Steve was already in. He went straight to the
room which they’ve seen the light from the window. He
walked in with silent steps. When he looked at the bed he
heard a loud and creepy scream and for a moment there was
blood all over it and a girl was dead. Then, it was all silent
again, but the door was closed.
He jumped through the glass window and heard the same
voice: “- I’ve warned you, you’ll be the next…”
When he hit the
ground
he
was
frightened to death.
He screamed to his
friend: “Run!” and they
were
both
crying.
Steve was so scared
he didn’t even realize
the glass pieces in his
skin and the girl
screaming
behind
them.
Scared
By BRUNO EXNER – 14 – Upper Intermediate II
Last Saturday I arranged with my friend to spend the whole
day playing “Call of Duty” at his house. As soon as I got there
his mother told us that she would go buy some soda for us.
His father was at work and his brother at University. When
she left we turned on the videogame and played until we
heard a noise coming from the kitchen. It sounded like
footsteps. We went to the kitchen to check what it was but we
saw nothing.
After that we went back to the TV room but while we were
playing the noise came back. We checked the kitchen again
and we found nothing. We decided to close the door.
By the time his mother arrived
we were scared! We told her
what was happening and, don’t
ask me how, she grabbed a
knife, opened the door and…
there was a cute little cat sitting
on the floor! The three of us
started to laugh.
When I and my friend turned the videogame on again there
was no Internet!

Jimmy Page
Justin Bieber
By GUILHERME GORGULHO – 14 – Upper Intermediate II
By RENATA SONODA – 14 – Pre Intermediate
When you think about the rock in the 70’s, you think
about Led Zeppelin. And when you think about Led
Zeppelin, you think of Jimmy Page.
Known as one of the richest, most famous and skillful guitar
players of the world, Jimmy Page created the best rock’n’roll
band ever.
Led Zeppelin started in 1968 with the classic formation. A
singer (Robert Plant), a drummer (John Bonham), a bassist
(John Paul Jones) and a guitarist (Jimmy Page). The band
made an unbelievable success, selling millions of albums and
performing at memorable concerts. But in 1980 John Bonham
died and the band was over.
After that, Page recorded a couple of albums and participated
in some music projects, for example, with the Black Crowes in
1997.
Nowadays, Jimmy Page
is 66 years old and what
used to be his long and
black hair turned into
white and short. In 2007
what everyone was
expecting since 1985 The Live Aid Concert happened. Led Zeppelin
was back for one
concert just for 20,000
people. They decided to
come back in order to
play a tribute to Ahmet
Ertegun, the founder of
their
recording
company, who had died
two months before.
After that, his last concert was in 2008, in the closing ceremony
of the Olympic Games. We hope he starts performing at
concerts again!
He is named Justin Drew
Bieber, known by Justin. Justin
was born in Stratford 16 years
st
ago, on the 1 of March. He plays
the piano, the guitar, the drums
and the trumpet. At the age of 12
nd
he won his first competition in 2
place. In order to show his family
his potential, he put some videos
of himself singing on You Tube.
Then Scooter Brown, his agent,
saw his performance and realized
how talented Justin was. After
that, he signed a contract with
Island
Records.
Then
his
professional career started.
His first album was “My World” and if not enough, four of his
singles were in TOP 15 in the Canadian Hot 100. This album
sold 137.000 copies in the first week. Bieber was nominated
the hottest star by J-14. That’s why he is the best singer ever.
Britney Spears
By MARCELO WAJSKOP – 13 – Teen 4
Britney Spears was
born on December
2nd, 1981. She lived
in a little town in
Louisiana until she
was eleven. Her first
performance was in
church choirs in her
home town. She didn’t
like the school at all.
She worked at the
Mickey Mouse Club
from 1992 to 1994.
Her first single hit came out in 1999, it was Baby One More
Time. She won the MTV Europe Awards in 1999 for Best
Female, Best Pop, Best Breakthrough Artist and Best Song.

Have you ever heard about Jimmy Hendrix? If you
haven’t, it’s time to renew the songs in your I Pod.
Johnny Allen Hendrix was his given name but when he
became famous in the late 50’s, people started to call him
Jimmy Hendrix. He was born in November 1942, in the USA.
Unfortunately, he died in 1970. Jimmy was a black man. He
wore tight, colorful and weird clothes and played his electric
guitar in the most beautiful way I’ve ever heard.
He became famous because he played his songs faster and
better than the other guitarists. Furthermore, in 2003 the
Rolling Stones magazine considered him the best guitarist in
the world, and I agree with them.
I’ve been his fan since my cousin introduced him to me one
year ago.
You can be the next. Just listen to one of his best songs.

The fastest is not always the best
Strange cuisine
By FERNANDO NAKAMUTA – 16 - FCE
By PEDRO V. DARVAS – 12 – Teen 5
Instead of polluting the atmosphere using cars and
buses, what about using the good old bicycle?
Yes, this good old bicycle is
one of the most popular
means of transportation in
Japan, where we can see
teenagers going to school by
bicycle, parents cycling with
their babies and even old
people using it.
This is due to several factors such as good streets without
potholes, differently from São Paulo, where we can find
potholes in almost every street we go. Besides, there is a
great number of parking lots for bicycles, much greater than
the number of parking lots for cars. That’s why most people in
Japan choose the bicycle to travel medium and small
distances, differently from other countries like Brazil, where
very few people do that.
The bicycle is not the fastest means of transportation, but it’s
the healthiest. It doesn’t cause any damage to the
atmosphere and it probably is the cheapest. You will never
have to worry about washing it, putting fuel in it or taking it to
the mechanic every week.
In conclusion, I think it’s a type of transportation that cities
should invest more on, building up more bike lanes,
encouraging people to pollute less and creating parking lots
for bicycles everywhere.

I love to try different food. Every place I travel to I try the
local food. Sometimes it’s very good, sometimes it’s terrible.
But it’s very nice to say to the people I know that I tried “that
thing”!
There was a time I went to Chile with my family and we ate
some seafood in a very good restaurant. My cousin loves to
eat strange food too, and we ordered some sea urchin. It was
like an orange tongue with a terrible sea taste. It was
disgusting. I hated it. But now, every time I talk about strange
food with someone I say: “I’ve eaten sea urchin”, and the
person says: “Wow”!
Museum robbed
Plans for next weekend
By JULIA DEMOLEIN – 13 - Teen 6
By STEPHANIE THOMPSON – 09 – Pre Teen 4
An important museum was robbed yesterday around
midnight. The thieves turned off the burglar alarm. When
they got in, the robbers overpowered four guards on the first
floor. To get to the second floor they broke a glass door.
The police found out that two Dega’s paintings were stolen
because of their high value. The police also think that at least
one of the robbers works in the museum.
People who work at the museum are being interrogated. One
of the guards was shot and he is at the hospital, but he will be
interrogated as soon as he gets out.
The only clue found was a pink cell phone that probably
belongs to one of the robbers.
My weekend is going to be great! I’m going to be in São
Paulo and I’m going to go to the club. I’m going to stay at a
house in the club. I’m going to get there by car and it takes 30
minutes. Before I get there, I’m going to school and after
school I’m going to eat, and then, I’m going to the club. There
I’m going to see horses, and my family is going with me. I’m
going to come back on Sunday night.
Hope your weekend is going to be great as my weekend!

Computer – A brilliant invention
You are what you wear
By THIAGO N. FRANCHI – 16 - FCE
By JOANA R. DEHEINZELIN – 15 - CAE
Today computers aren’t
only for rich people.
Almost everybody can be
in contact with this
brilliant invention that
has greatly improved our
lives.
Actually,
many
people have a computer at
home, but the ones who
don’t can go to any coffee
shop across the street and
use it.
Nowadays people got used to using the computer. It has
made some things much easier and faster to be done. A
hundred years ago nobody believed that today we would pay
bills or watch movies in a machine.
On the other hand, just like everything else, computers have
a bad side. Hackers use them to steal money or to invade
websites and destroy them. Besides, some pages on
pornography for example, which are not appropriate for
underage people, became easier to be accessed.
To sum up, computers can make
our lives much easier and can
open an enormous window to the
outside
world,
making
communication faster. However,
if specific laws or security
programs don’t protect people
from hackers they will continue to
steal us.
The Personal Stylist – A professional in
demand nowadays
By RENATA ROCHA – 17 - CAE
There is a new career in demand nowadays. Known as
Personal Stylist or Trend Coach their job is to help their
clients in search for the ideal image, finding out which clothes,
shapes and colors fit right on each person.
One of the best things of this job is the multiplicity of areas in
which they can act. As a Personal Stylist you can work for
companies offering workshops on dress code, you can work
at some stores offering assistance to customers or even in
beauty shops or gyms.
The importance of this job in the market is growing due to the
fact that appearance has now an undisputed value. More and
more people have less time to worry about details like where
to buy clothes suitable for their profile, or even to find out
what is missing or left in the wardrobe.
According to the trend of the unique, this is only one example
of the large group of professionals which are requested to
help in search for highlights in society, such as the Personal
Stylist. More than the customer’s personality, this reflects
some important values of our society where success and
recognition seem to be the main pillars to be met.
It’s often said
that
you
shouldn’t judge
people
by
appearances:
what matters is
the inside. This is
probably true, but
the wish to get to
know
someone
comes from your
first
impression.
The odds that you
become
friends
with
someone
lovely who has a
scruffy appearance
are much lower
than they would be
if this same person
was good looking.
Why? Because we
live in a society
where we are what
we wear.
This situation began when capitalism became our main
economical system. People started to value money more
than anything and clothes proved to be the best way to show
others how much you earned. Soon, clothes brands became
more valued than the garment itself.
But why should some textiles cost as much as a minimum
wage? That’s the greatest question but, even knowing how
non-sense it all is, whenever we need to be cheered up,
buying brand clothes seems great. What’s the reason for this
obsession? Advertising.
Nowadays, we see more ads in a year than a person would
see in his entire life 50 years ago. They make us look terrible,
while people with the right clothes appear to be perfect. So
we run to buy all their products, totally brainwashed by what
we’ve seen, resulting in a lot of people in debt and tons of
fake clothes: it’s a huge problem.
A problem to which the solution is not immediate: it comes
with people’s acquisition of knowledge about the subject and
determination to change the situation. Because why should
we be what we wear, if what really matters is the inside?

Music is immortal
By LUCIANA LIGEIRO – 14 - Pre Intermediate
What’s music for you? How often do you listen to music?
Do you create music or only enjoy it? Do you like music?
I’m almost sure that you answered with a big yes for this last
question, didn’t you? And not only you, but people all over the
world like and listen to music since they were born. Japanese
people, Africans, Americans, English people, women, men,
kids or old people. Everybody listens to it, and this big variety
of listeners exists because there is a big variety of music, too.
Or do you listen to the same music that your grandma does?
Well, I love music. Actually, I wouldn’t know how to live
without it! I listen to music all the time. My favorite singers are
John Mayer and Colbie Caillat, but I can listen to every kind of
music. Well, when I’m in the car, I often turn on the radio and
sleep! Really, music relaxes me a lot! And with the stress of
the week I wouldn’t stand living without my special sounds. I
like music to dance, too. Sometimes, I turn on my I Pod very
loud and dance alone in my room. When I realize I’m totally sweat
in my bed. Crazy, I know. Well, I
like music because it gives me
memories, too. You know that
special sound that you sang with
your friend? Or that music that
reminds you of your love? Well,
for me this kind of music is
immortal. Music is immortal.
So, that’s it. I love music.
The Finnish Designers at Tomie Otake
Institute
By CAROLINA MACEDO – 14 – Teen 6
The Finnish Art Exhibit
involves a group of
designers of different
types of art.
The exhibit is about the
Finnish Art, so there are
vases, furniture, clothes
and others. The exhibit is
organized
in
many
different ways. In a room
there are vases, banners,
furniture and others. In
another room there are
the same designed items
but made in a different
way. There is also a room
full of clothes, the most
different women’s clothes
I’ve seen.
At the exhibit there are
Nokia mobile phones, the
old ones and the new
ones. It’s very interesting
because you can see how
different they are and how
technology has developed
from ages until now.
I would recommend going
to the Finnish Art Exhibit,
because
it’s
very
interesting. You can see
many different types of art
and also many different
techniques and works of
art from different times in
history.
The role of music in my life
By ALINE ARAI – 15 - Pre Intermediate
Have you ever cried listening to a song? Have you ever
remembered important people in your life while you were
listening to music? Well, I have. So, how would you live
without music in your life?
As you know, there are so many kinds of music that I can’t
even say all of them. Pop, rock, metal, country, samba,
blues… different kinds of music for different kinds of people.
Each one has a style. And there are people that like all kinds
of music. I’m one of them. I listen to music when I study,
when I’m at school, when I’m playing at the computer, and
even when I’m asleep.
I think all the best experiences in
my life have songs that stand for
them. Very important people in
my life have their songs, too.
And every time I listen to those
songs I remember them. I
remember all these good
moments. That’s the role of
music in my life.
Music can be just for entertainment or can be your job. If
music is essential for me, imagine how important it is for
dancers, musicians and singers. That’s what they need to
live.
So, I’ll ask again: How would you live without music? Well, I
wouldn’t. I’m not a singer or a dancer, I don’t even know how
to play an instrument, but I think music is essential in
everyone’s life.

Being a Game Designer – The right choice
By MARINA LOBO – 14 - FCE
By PAULA GENTIL PEREIRA – 20 - CAE
Hi Dear,
How are you? We haven’t seen each other for two months,
right? I’ve received your letter asking how the exhibition was.
I’m writing to tell you how it was, and to invite you to spend
the weekend with me and my family in our country house.
Well, the exhibition was really different. It had some pieces of
furniture that we had never seen. The colors used were very
attractive and the shapes were fantastic. It was amazing to
see the time when some of them were made. It is practically
impossible to guess something that modern could have been
done so long ago.
What I most liked about it was the fact that some of the
pieces can be found in any place, but in the year they were
made, the 80’s, they were totally new and modern for the
time.
I’m sure you’d love to go. You’ll be amazed with the different
and sometimes strange shapes used. So tell me what you
think, ok? And let me know if you’re free next weekend. Best
wishes to you and your family.

Hairspray, The Musical - At the Plaza
Theatre
By ERICA YANAGUIHARA – 16 - CAE
I am sure you’ll agree that all over the world musicals are
a successful way of matching cheerful music to amusing
acting and choreography.
However, Los Angeles,
which was once known for
its
well-produced
musicals, hadn’t promoted
this kind of entertainment
for a long time until last
month, when “Hairspray –
The Musical” started to be
performed at the Plaza
Theatre.
It seems to me that if you are thinking of having a pleasant
time, attending this musical would be a suitable idea. Firstly,
from the very beginning to the end, the stage is filled with
well-made scenery as well as high-technological special
effects, which include colorful lights and actors hanging on
cables. On top of that, the cast is made up of hundreds of
good singers who are also talented dancers and actors.
Another advantage of this two-hour performance is that in
spite of being an event mainly recommended for children,
adults can easily have a good experience, once the plot is
well-written and the songs are beautiful.
Nevertheless,
not
everything is a “bed of
roses”. For instance, there
aren’t enough places for the
elderly at the audience and,
due to this lack, some
seventy-year-old ladies had
to sit far from the exit door.
In addition, there have been
many complaints about the
ticket price and not all
students can pay half of the
price.
The event could definitely be improved if the disadvantages
pointed above were fixed, but, in spite of them, I had a
remarkable time seeing this musical and I am certain that you
will also enjoy it if you are looking forward to attending an
inspiring performance and listening to some good music.
A game designer is someone who creates games for any
kind of entertainment such as computers, videogames, cell
phones and also ordinary games like card games or
chessboard ones. A game designer prescribes a concept and
how to play: in short, he works on the whole process. He also
needs to be updated with tendencies on TV, magazines and
trendy games to be a good designer. In a nutshell, a game
designer has to do a little bit of everything.
Today, it is rare to find
a video or computer
game where the main
programmer is also
the main designer,
except for common
games such as Tetris.
With very complex
games designers work
in teams, so it is a
different
group
dynamic where you
have to listen and be
listened to as well.
Being a game designer requires artistic and technical
competencies such as: ability with computers, drawing and
creativity. All this knowledge is used at the same time in the
process of making games.
In the global industry, this kind of worker is rare because
there aren’t College courses for this career. But in a few years
the job market will be more competitive and this will cause a
dispute among companies in search for game designers.
The process of creating games can cost millions of dollars, so
it is easy to understand why candidates are chosen carefully
and preference is given to the most recognized game
designers.
Nowadays,
the
industry of games
is
the
most
profitable kind of
industry
in
the
world, so anyone
interested in this
area should pay
attention to the
opportunities in the
future – it will be
worth it.

Brazil in the World Cup - a brief story
Robinho
By PEDRO PROTO – 13 – Pre Intermediate
By VITOR HO DE CASTRO – 14 – Upper Intermediate II
The World Cup is an international football competition in
which countries national teams compete to see which one is
the best.
During the last 18 tournaments, seven nations have won the
title. Brazil has won the World Cup five times, and the Brazilian
team is the only one that has played in every tournament. Italy
has won four titles, after Germany, which has won three titles.
But there are others as Uruguay and Argentina, with two titles
each, and England and France, with one title each.
The first time Brazil won the World Cup was in 1958 in
Sweden, against the Swedish Team by 2 x 0.
Brazil won the cup again in 1962 in Chile, against
Czechoslovakia by 3 x 1. In the 1970’s World Cup in Mexico,
where Brazil won the tournament too, the country received the
Jules Rimet trophy. But when it was in an exhibition in Rio de
Janeiro, someone stole and melt it! It was made of pure gold!
But Brazil continued competing and won in 1994 in USA
against Italy by 3 x 2 in the penalty shootout.
The last time Brazil won the cup was in 2002 in Japan, against
Germany by 2 x 0. This time Cafú, the team’s captain, lifted the
trophy.
Do you know Robson de Souza? He is a soccer player
known for his skills. He is internationally famous and
here in Brazil he’s a soccer star.
He’s black, has short hair and he’s small and very thin.
Recently, he’s been playing at Santos Futebol Clube and he
was admitted to the Brazilian soccer team a few times.
I’ve seen him in a Santos Match,
and I’ve been his fan since 2002,
when Santos won the Brazilian
championship,
beating
Corinthians in the final with a
score of 5 x 2 for Santos.
Particularly, I like his fast way to
play soccer and score goals, and
what he’s been doing for Santos
nowadays is great. Sometimes I
think he can be more humble,
because he humiliates the
opponent.
Robinho has everything to cheer up the stadium because of
his funny soccer, like scoring skilled goals.
2010! Is the Brazilian Team ready to win
the Cup for the sixth time?
GROUP WRITING: Alexandre Wright, Ana Flávia Lofrano,
Bruno Exner, Felipe V. Schiavon, Guilherme Gorgulho,
Guilherme Lofrano, Vitor Ho de Castro – Upper Intermediate II
We are afraid of losing this
year’s World Cup because
of what happened in 2006.
The current Brazilian team
was announced three weeks
ago and there is a big
difference from the 2006 one.
The first big difference is the
coach.
Dunga
has
no
experience but he tries
different players and is tough,
whereas Parreira insisted on
the same players and was
lenient.
Besides that, there are the players themselves. Some of them
deserve to be there while others don’t. One good example is
Kleberson. He’s a little bit old and never plays for Flamengo,
his current team. Brazil has many other good midfielders like
Paulo Henrique Ganso and Neymar. He shouldn’t be in our
team. Another example is Felipe Melo who disappointed the
Italian soccer fans during the last season.
Apart from that, the Brazilian team has always been
considered to be the best. However, some other teams are
getting better compared to the one we have now. It’s
dangerous for any team when the players think they are
superior because they might not take the training seriously.
To conclude, the Brazilian Team could be much better. We
believe it’s a functional and not a technical team. This means
the soccer may not be beautiful but we still stand a chance.
