IF PUBLIC speaking gives you the willies, the chances are you’ll be just as scared of virtual people, experts have
discovered. But in the long run these “avatars” will help you overcome your fears.
Mel Slater at University College London, and his colleague David-Paul Pertaub have developed a VR environment to
help people overcome their phobias. In their virtual seminar room, people have to give a presentation to eight
computer-generated people who can appear by turns fascinated, bored stiff or just annoying neutral.
While it’s not the first time VR has been used to treat phobias, such as fear of spiders or flying, no one knew if the
technique could also help people to overcome their social phobias.
To find out, Pertaub watched how people behave in seminars and programmed the virtual people to do the same
things: crossing their arms, frowning, yawning and putting their feet on the table. “Our negative audience is very
negative, “says Slater”.
Then Slater and Pertaub compared the performances of 43 volunteers who gave a talk either to an attentive
audience or to an unenthusiastic one. Surprisingly, the subjects responded as if the avatars were real.

In the 1918 elections the republicans won in almost every area except in the North, the region called Ulster. The new
parliament announced that Ireland was now a republic. Guerrilla fighting against the British began. As a result the
British government decided to make peace. In 1921 it agreed to the independence of the South of Ireland. But it also
insisted that Ulster, or Northern Ireland as it became known, should remain united with Britain. So, the island was
separated in two parts: Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.
However a minority has been since then ready and willing to use violent means to achieve a united Ireland. When the
country was divided, the population of the new republic was only 5% Protestant against 67% in Northern Ireland,
whose government was controlled by the Protestants. They feared the Catholics and kept them out of responsible
positions.
New riots began in 1969. The Irish Republican Army ( IRA ) started its campaign of shootings and bombings, and the
British army was drawn into fight. In 1972 the Northern Ireland government was removed and replaced with direct rule
from London. In 1985 Britain and Ireland made formal agreement at Hillsborough that they would exchange views on
Northern Ireland regularly. But this agreement is still controversial.
The future of Northern Ireland remains uncertain. It is unlikely that there will be more Catholics than Protestants for a
very long time. Meanwhile young people who live there cannot remember a time when there was peace in the
province.
