Plaça Major Address Plaça Major 2 17820 Banyoles Spain . Banyoles old town used to be a deteriorated area in which vehicles and pedestrians cohabitated around a urban system of narrow streets and old sidewalks. The irrigation canals that originally were clean had become part of the sewer system of the city. Around the Central Square there were also sidewalks in which cars parked randomly. The process was to 'pedestrianize' the whole area, removing all the old sidewalks. The new intervention is made with travertine stone. This calcareous stone has always been present in the city's subsoil. All the enigmatic buildings, churches, medieval houses or monuments were also raised with travertine. The departing point is to cover the Central Square (the most relevant part of the project) using a tessellation of travertine. The proliferation of this tiling arrives to the streets and minor squares in different phases of the project. On the other hand, the irrigation system is uncovered intermittently across the pedestrian ways. photo: Adrià Goula . Project is public! . This project concerns the conversion of a small 50m2 restaurant into a Lounge Bar, at the riverside front in Porto, Massarelos. Plastered stucco boards were placed around the walls, hanging over a contrasting dark wooden floor. The customer’s area was separated from the services and supporting spaces such as the sanitary, the kitchen and the DJ cabin, installed in half of the former restaurant kitchen. After all, the DJ is the new coking master over here. These “fleshy” spaces got moulded in orange juicy colours, contrasting with the white/beige painted main room. The relation with the beautiful outside landscape was improved by emphasising the presence of the 4 existing windows as absences in the walls, inviting for contemplation. The lighting as well the furniture was carefully chosen, out of vintage stores, in order to fulfil the client’s will of spending few and creating an atmosphere that could be cosy, slightly minimalistic and sophisticated at the same time. photo: José Carlos Nunes de Oliveira . Casa da Musica Address Avenida da Boavista 604 4149 Porto Portugal http://www.casadamusica.pt/ . After Porto was selected one of the 2 cultural capitals of Europe in 2001, an international competition started, for a new concert hall to be positioned in the historical centre. The shape directly derived from ‘programmatic-piling-up’. Two shoe-box concert halls were piled first, the other public programs were added onto the shoe-boxes and the ‘remaining’ spaces between the public functions were filled up with secondary serving spaces, such as foyers, restaurant, terraces, technical spaces and vertical transport. A continuous route connects all functions and ‘remaining spaces’ by stairs, platforms and escalators: the building becomes an architectural adventure. The loop creates the possibility to use it for festivals with simultaneous performances. Wave-like corrugated glass is used in both the 1300 seat grand auditorium and its smaller 350 seat counterpart. Through material transparency each space reveals its contents to the city; showing an array of performances and cultural events. photo: Casa da Música . Project is public! . . . . . . . . . Restaurant Les Cols Address Carretera de la Canya 0 17800 Olot Spain http://www.lescols.com/ . Chef Fina Puigdevall converted the ground floor of her family’s 13th-century house into one of the ‘world’s best-looking dining’ establishments with typical Garrotxa gastronomy and she added five luxury rooms where diners can spend the night. Local RCR architects took glass as their main ingredient. ” Les Cols wants to offer the most intimate and familiar meals in today’s language. Fina likes the ennoblement of humble products; nature and landscape as her source of inspiration; reinterpreting and adapting the products from the land and her surroundings; the game between emptiness and space in the presentation; the contrast between tradition and avant-garde -the same ideas which have inspired the architectonic reforms of the restaurant.” Olot is a bit off the radar of mainstream tourism, but for hungry ones on the road between Bilbao and Barcelona, Les Cols is well worth a visit, even if it was only for the volcanic landscape of La Garrotxa. photo: Eugeni Pons . This café is situated along the river Douro in the old city centre. It is a simple glazed pavilion, integrated into the lively quayside surroundings. When all the glass doors on the south side are opened, the café is transformed into a large, covered open-air terrace. The only solid boxes are the two service-zones inside, one for the bar, and the other for sanitary services. The pavilion seems to hover above the ground on a small raised platform. The terrace has an amazing canopy, resembling the sails of the ships passing by. . Project is public! . Serralves Museum Address Rua D.João de Castro 210 4150-417 Porto Portugal http://www.serralves.pt/ . A roughly north-south longitudinal axis serves as the framework for the project. Two asymmetrical wings branch off to the south from the main body of the museum, creating a courtyard between them, while another courtyard is formed at the northern end between the L-shaped volume of the auditorium and the public entrance atrium. The volume of the main building is divided between exhibition spaces, offices and storage, an art library and a restaurant with adjoining terrace. The auditorium and bookstore have independent entrances and may be used when the museum itself is closed. The exhibition area is composed of several rooms, connected by a large U-shaped gallery - it occupies most of the entrance level, extending to the lower floor in one of the wings. The large doors that separate the different exhibition spaces and partition walls can be used to create different routes or organize separate exhibitions simultaneously. . Architecture Faculty Address Rua do Gólgota 215 4150 Porto Portugal http://www.fa.up.pt . The School of Architecture of Porto articulates along the limits of an ancient farm right next to the Douro river, creating a wide central space, like an interior square, surrounded by the built volumes. This intervention reveals a lot of sensibility with the surroundings, in communication with the river and the sea. Stairs and ramps distribute the various accesses to the different levels and functional zones. The apparent fragmentation of the build volumes, visible on the project drawings, recovers its continuity in the circulation at the inferior level. photo: Victor Popovici . Project is public! . Bouça Housing Complex Address Rua Melo II 453 4440 Porto Portugal . This project, from 1973, was integrated in the program SAAL in Porto to create social housing for poor people. And even though it was made through highly controlled costs, Siza Vieira managed to create a housing complex that is worth studying and visiting. In 1977 there where only two blocks completed. Nowadays, in 2004, all the blocks were concluded and a new life was given to this complex. Instead of having only poor people living here, the low prices and high quality living attracted artists, architects and young couples to settle in. With four levels, each block present an articulation in terms of passages that connect the whole complex. Together with the housing units there is also commercial spaces and green open spaces. photo: João Sousa . Project is public! . Casa das Artes Address Rua de Ruben A 4050 Porto Portugal . The building is located in the gardens of a neo-classical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century. The program for the competition proposed a cinema, an auditorium and an exhibition gallery, as well as the conservation of the gardens as they were. This is one of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura. It's mainly composed of two parallel granite stone walls, with all the programin the middle. With a very minimalistic approach, this building is composed of great building details, reminding some of Mies Van der Rohe's characteristics. photo: João Sousa . Project is public! . Manoel de Oliveira Cinema House Address Rua de Viana de Lima 4150 Porto Portugal . The Cinema House represents a significant change in the formal expression of Eduardo Souto de Moura. A change of style that approaches this work to the formal expression of the architecture of Siza Vieira. This building pretends to be similar to the surrounding houses, having some distortions to fit better on the plot. The overall image resembles to the lens of the camera, with dynamic eyes like the insects, searching for the views to the see in between the buildings. . photo: João Sousa Project is public! . Cinema Batalha Address Praça da Batalha 10 4050 Porto Portugal . Situated in the heart of the city of Porto, the proposal of Artur Andrade continues his development of the expressionist line with a curve façade that creates movement and great dynamics in tension with the glass façade that defines the corner of the square in a futuristic style. It was a very polemic building when constructed (1946) because of the fascist regime. Today it works as a lounge bar, a restaurant and a cinema/theatre. photo: João Sousa . Project is public! . House Mártires da Liberdade Address Rua Mártires da Liberdade 114-120 4050 Porto Portugal . Located in the centre of Porto, this building has two separate apartments with a garden and a commercial area. A new construction has been cleverly settled next to an existing 19th century house, creating an interesting architectural tension, and a rich dialogue in what comes to architectural language and expression. The total area of construction is approximately 500 sqmt, integrated in a 800 sqmt garden. . Project is not public! . . . . . . . . There is also an auditorium for 200 people determined to conferences, films projection and other shows. Its location, between the street "Entrequintas" and the gardens of the crystal palace has an intense presence with the nature giving it a peaceful environment to build a library. With a great attention to details, the main façade is covered with pine wood to create a shield from the sun to the exposition rooms. The library has to floors with a big opening that connects visually the two levels. photo: João Sousa . Project is public! . Oporto Blood Bank Address Rua do Bolama 133 4200 - 139 Porto Portugal http://www.ipsangue.org/maxcontent-documento-111.html . The O’Porto Blood Bank is built on a detached plot with an irregular polygon in the heart of a city block. The building-as-line runs through the polygon´s different directions searching its geometry. The Blood bank supports all activities of regional blood collection and analysis as well as its partition in 3 components (erythrocytes, plasma and platelets). These components are later to be distributed to hospitals and pharmaceutical industries. This typology is new and hardly tested. It has a great complexity due to permanent risk of blood contamination. Continuous scientific and technological developments force permanent alterations. It is therefore a building with an unstable interior, which will undergo frequent metamorphosis throughout its life. The building program is a linear sequential process (of blood disassembly). It suggests to be more adequate a low and fluid construction rather than a high building, as pointed out by the neighbouring housing buildings (5 and 6 levels). photo: FG+SG . Schiecentrale Phase 4B Address Schiehavenkade 1-526 3024 Rotterdam Netherlands http://www.schiecentrale.nl/ . Schiecentrale 4B is the final block in the redevelopment of the former Schiehaven power plant. It contains 156 live-work units, 20 quayside houses, supermarket, gymnasium, 400 parking places and a semi-public deck with sun terrace, podium and playground. This combination of functions adds life to the area, which has become the hub of the creative industry in Rotterdam in recent years. Schiecentrale 4B is a new building wrapped around the old power plant. The scale and size are in keeping with the metropolitan docklands context. The slab shape means that every live-work unit enjoys views of both the River Maas and the city of Rotterdam. All units are accessible from a gallery faced in a specially woven stainless-steel screen and have glazed facades with floor-to-ceiling harmonica doors on the west side. Attached to the gallery are storage units - normally hidden away, but now eye-catching objects. The free floor-plans of the lofts allow residents to determine the arrangement of rooms. photo: Ronald Tilleman . Project is not public! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
