Dog Rescue An animal rescue charity in New Zealand is teaching three unwanted dogs how to drive in order to show how clever the animals can be – and why they deserve to find new homes. Monty, a giant schnauzer, Ginny, a whippet cross, and Porter, an old beardie cross, have spent the last seven weeks learning 10 or so sequential behaviours that will allow them to start the car, accelerate, change gears and, crucially, steer. The New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which is behind the initiative, hopes the three dogs will be able to demonstrate their newfound driving skills in a Mini adapted for paws, on live TV this weekend. Mark Vette, an animal trainer who has been putting the dogs through their paces, said: ‘[There are] no excuses. We’ve got to get in there and show that dogs can drive cars. It’ll be “dial-a-dog” the week after this.’ Mr Vette added that the dogs had already picked up some bad driving habits. ‘A couple of days ago the car was going too fast, the trainer nearly got run over,’ he said. Text: Matthew Champion, Rescue dogs learn how to drive in New Zealand, 06/12/2012, Metro, http://metro.co.uk/2012/12/06/rescuedogs-learn-how-to-drive-in-new-zealand-3303604/ 0. Jet Lag = Brain Damage for Hamsters What about humans? Have you ever traveled on a plane from North America to Europe? When you arrived, you probably noticed that it wasn’t very easy to fall asleep at bedtime or wake up in the morning. You had jet lag! Your body’s rhythm acts like a clock to tell you when you should be asleep, and when you should get hungry. When you change the time zone, it takes the clock a few days to adjust to the new schedule. What if you never really let your clock adjust? Pilots often go for long stretches of time without a regular sleeping and waking schedule. Erin Gibson of the University of California, Berkeley, wondered how jet lag affects the brain and thinking patterns. To find out, her team experimented with some hamsters. Gibson and her team didn’t actually send hamsters flying around the world. They created the effect of a long flight in the lab by making the sun rise six hours earlier than usual. If you traveled from New York City to Paris, you’d have the same time difference. Every three days for a full month, the hamsters’ schedule changed by another six hours, basically putting the animals in a permanent state of jet lag. The result? After a month of changing schedules, the hamsters had trouble with basic learning exercises that are easy for normal hamsters. Gibson told Science News that jet lag “is having a long-term effect on learning and memory.” More research needs to be done to see if this effect applies to people, too! Then answer the questions below using about 1 to 5 words or numbers. If your school has a strict uniform policy, spare a thought for the players at Wimbledon, where the dress policy has been tightened up! Unlike at other Grand Slam tennis tournaments, there is a traditional dress code for players at Wimbledon, which is ‘almost entirely white’. Over the years, players have tried to bend the rules a little, such as with coloured soles on their trainers, bright sweat bands or colourful underwear. No one will be allowed to get away with that this year, though, as all that’s allowed is a 1cm coloured trim on all items of a player’s clothing, including shorts, Tshirts, caps, headbands and socks! The tournament referee, Andrew Jarrett, has told all the players to expect the rules to be much tougher this year. There will be ‘a supply of suitable clothing’ in the referee’s office for any player who breaks the rules. So, if Andy Murray or Rafael Nadal are seen wearing clothes that don’t quite fit, it could be because they turned up for a match not wearing the ‘white’ thing! Text: Keilly Swift, Wearing the white thing at Wimbledon, 27/06/2014, FirstNews, http://www.firstnews.co.uk/news/wearing-the-whitething-at-wimbledon-i10911 0. How has the dress code at Wimbledon changed? It has tightened up. 1. How are the players at Wimbledon expected to dress? 2. How did players react towards the dress code in the past? 3. How much colour can players wear now? 4. What will happen to players who don’t follow the dress code? 18
