My girlfriend Monica and I love to travel so
last year we both got iPhones with a GPS service. These things can help you plan your journey
and they draw the whole way step by step for
you. So I once grabbed Monica’s iPhone and
programmed a trip around town for her. The
next day I called her and said to look at the GPS
and follow it. So she went from one place to the
next and in each place I left a red rose for her to
collect.
At the end, she came back to where she had
started and that’s where I was waiting for her.
I told her to look at the GPS and the way that she
had gone created a heart on her GPS screen. She
already had the flowers so all that was left was
to pop the big question.

place in the world. The pictures of these places
are taken very often because they don’t want
the pictures to be outdated. And so my friend
told me when they would be taking the pictures of my town and I went to the main square
holding a huge sign, saying “Marry me Betty!!!”
These pictures are very accurate, you know, so
I was sure it would be possible to read the sign
on Google. And then I told Betty about Google
Maps and said I could show her our town and
our house. She was very excited and we sat down
at the computer and then I zoomed in on the
main square of our town and there was me and
the sign!

ROBOT WITH A SCALPEL
Heart bypass is a routine operation nowadays but still a very a drastic one. The doctors
have to cut your breastbone open in order to reach the heart and replace the blocked veins. But
some doctors have been testing an alternative:
a system known as da Vinci. Instead of opening
a patient’s chest, surgeons make a few small cuts
so that that a tiny robot can put its arms inside.
In traditional heart surgery the doctors must
break some of the bones in the patient’s chest.
With a robot performing the procedure, this is
not necessary, so after the surgery, the body can
focus on getting the heart well rather than dividing its attention between healing the heart, the
bones and the huge wound.

experiment, Doyle didn’t think twice. Obviously, there was some risk, but it seemed well
worth it.
Many doctors have long believed that robots could completely change the bypass surgery. Until recently, however, they didn’t have enough data to convince the rest of the medical world. But now they can finally report
that the first hundred patients have been operated on and responded very well.
Compared to traditional bypass patients,
they spent three days less in hospital. They needed about 60 percent less blood transfusions.
Generally, normal surgery patients have to take at least nine weeks off from work, but the
robot patients were back on their feet within
two or three weeks. Now, a year after the robot
surgeries, 99 percent of patients still have clear arteries, compared with 80 percent of patients who had conventional ”human” bypass
surgery.
The less-invasive surgery was also especially helpful with high-risk patients. These patients are the people who had high levels of sugar in the blood, were overweight or had breathing problems. For them, a normal bypass
operation would mean risking their lives.
Installing a new robot is a big investment
for a hospital. The equipment is very expensive – $1.3 million for a single operating room. But
on the other hand, if patients go home and return to work sooner, then there’s less cost

MUTT’S REUNION
On a Friday afternoon, when Ian Marshall
came home and greeted his dog Mutts asking

”Her sisters want to get together.” This was Ian’s
first glimpse of what’s becoming known as dog
reunion.
Ian and Tara had bought Mutts a little more
than two years before from a no-kill rescue shelter in York. They had wanted a pure-breed dog
with all the papers and parents with international medals at first. But eventually the high costs and problems that came with selecting the
right dog farm and family finally became too
much. So they decided to give an orphaned dog
a family and a home and looked into the local
shelters. In one of them they found Mutts. At
that time her name was Girl #1, because she was
one of five sisters that had been left on the side
of the road by their owner. So the Marshalls adopted her.
Two years later one of the other Girls’ owners,
now living in Bath, contacted the shelter and
asked to be put in touch with the other four
owners and e-mailed all four asking if they would fancy attending a dog reunion. Like family
reunions, dog reunions bring together dog relatives and can be very exciting parties with
hats, music and photos or very simple meetings
in local dog parks.
Tara was charmed and couldn’t wait. Ian, on
the other hand, was suspicious. He wasn’t very
keen on becoming one of those “crazy dog people.” Of course he loved his dog. He even allowed Mutts to sleep on the bed – something many owners view as going one step too far already. But a dog reunion was another matter. This
was one step away from spending Saturdays at
the dog hairdresser and beauty saloon and that
was a step Ian was not willing to take.
But a date at a local park had already been
set, and the five owners agreed to meet.
The menu had been decided and the list of
who brings the bones, the treats and the balls
made.
Tara was excited as if it was going to be her
own birthday. She even contacted a dog psychologist to learn how to make meeting her siblings easy for Mutts, but she was told that after
a long separation period, it was not very likely
the dogs would recognize one another. The psychologist said they shouldn’t expect too much
sisterly love to be shown. That the Marshalls
should be prepared for a bit of disappointment.
And this was where Ian drew the line. He would not pay anyone to tell him how to prepare
for a walk in the park with his dog. He would
not take part in a “walk” that required more preparations than his own wedding. There was no
reunion for Mutts. She was taken to the beach
for a whole day instead. And she didn’t seem
to mind at all.

A woman who disappeared in the jungle at
the age of 8 was found after 19 years. She was discovered by a farmer from a village near the jungle. Some time ago he noticed that food had vanished from his storage place, which was a bit
removed from the main village. So he decided
to watch it. Pretty soon he discovered a naked
woman who came to take some rice. The man
gathered a few friends and they set a trap to catch
the woman.
Once they had her, the local policeman remembered that a man from another village had
lost his daughter 19 years before and the potential father was notified. He came immediately
and had no doubt the girl was his daughter although her body and face were covered in dirt
and her hair was knee-long. The parents had
long ago given up hope of ever being reunited
with their daughter but to them there can be no
question that this is their little girl thanks to her
facial features and a distinctive mark on her back.
Yet, although the parents are convinced, the authorities have asked for a DNA test to confirm
the girl’s identity.
Unfortunately, after such a long time in the
jungle, the woman speaks no language so it’s very difficult to communicate with her and find
out what exactly happened. The only thing that
is known is that she disappeared while taking
care of her parents’ buffalo on the edge of the
jungle. Her parents think she must have wandered off into the jungle and got lost. It seems that
she survived by hiding during the day and searching for food at night, because she now sleeps
all days and gets up in the evening.
She is described as “part human and part animal” because she finds it very difficult to adapt
to civilized life. She refuses to shower, doesn’t
allow anyone to dress her and tries to scare everyone off by shouting at them like a wild animal.
But the parents are convinced that with time
and patience they will be able to get through to
her and be a normal family again. 1

A short while ago, when I became a beautician, I met many girls who didn’t like the way
they looked so they thought a bit of make-up
would help. They always asked me what diet
I was on because I had a good figure and beautiful skin. So I started reading about it, took
a few courses and now when they come to my
Feel Good – Look Good Clinic, we sit down together, talk about their lifestyle and I suggest
the best diet.

Diets? I’m an expert on these! You name it
– I’ve tried it and can tell you all about it! The
1000 calories diet, for example, will make you
weak. I couldn’t get out of bed in the mornings!
For the grapefruit diet you need a healthy stomach – I got such stomachaches I couldn’t breathe! But right now I’m testing this ‘white food
diet’ – you know, rice, chicken, milk – and it looks very promising! It’s the best diet ever!

Diets are the story of my life. I love food – sweets, meats, sandwiches – anything. And I don’t
even gain weight that easily, but the Diet Clinic
is my second home. Did you know that you can
be allergic to foods? I have this condition where certain ingredients cause me to break out in
a rash and I start scratching myself. And so I’m
not on one particular diet but from time to time,
when I start itching and scratching again, I must
get tested and find out what to cross off my shopping list.

The death of Captain Carey was certainly
the most interesting case Sherlock Holmes investigated in 1895.
Capitan Peter Carey was a brave and successful seal and whale fisher. For many years he commanded the ship ‘Sea Unicorn’, of Dundee in
Scotland. Peter Carey was a dangerous man.
When he commanded his ship, he was called
Black Peter not because of his black beard, but
because of his black character. Still, he made se-
veral successful voyages and in the year 1884, he
retired a wealthy man.
He travelled for some years and finally he bought a small place called Woodman’s Lee, in Sussex. There he lived for six years and there he was
killed in the most unusual circumstances.
In everyday life Peter Carey was a silent and
gloomy fellow. He lived with his wife, his daughter aged twenty and two servants. These servants
were continually changing because he was a very unpleasant man and a drunkard. He often beat his wife and daughter and drove them out of
doors in the middle of the night. When the vicar wanted to speak to him about it, he attacked
him wildly.
He built himself a small hut a few yards from
his house. He always called it ‘the cabin’ and he
slept there every night. He kept the key in his
pocket, he cleaned the place himself and did not
allow anyone to enter it.
There were two windows on each side of the
cabin, one turned towards the road. When the
light burned in it at night people used to wonder what Peter was doing there. Two days before the murder, a worker walking from Forest
Row at one o’clock in the morning, stopped as
he passed the cabin and looked at the window.
He saw a man standing by the window but he
was certain that it was not Peter Carey, whom
he knew well. 1

gesprungen und habe um Hilfe gerufen.

in mein Zimmer zurückzugehen. Hier musste

Früher habe ich mir gar keine Gedanken
darüber gemacht, ob man meine Lebensweise
gesund nennen kann. Alles hat sich auf einen
Schlag geändert, als mein bester Freund bei
einem Unfall tödlich verunglückte. Auf einmal
begann ich das Leben richtig zu schätzen und
was damit verbunden ist, auch meine Lebenseinstellung. Um das Leben voll genießen zu
können, muss man schon gesund sein und dafür
muss man etwas tun, sogar wenn man erst 16
ist. Seit ein paar Monaten trainiere ich Karate,
halte Diät. Das bedeutet, dass ich fast gar keine
fettreichen Produkte esse, frisches Obst und
Gemüse bevorzuge und auf Süßigkeiten verzichte. Ich habe jetzt den Eindruck, dass ich
in meine Zukunft investiere.

Ich habe mir gerade das Rauchen abgewöhnt
und das ist der erste Schritt, um in guter Form
zu sein. Ich war zwar kein Kettenraucher, aber
ich konnte schon spüren, dass ich süchtig bin.
Meine Gedanken kreisten um Zigaretten, ich
habe mein ganzes Taschengeld für diesen
Blödsinn ausgegeben, anstatt mir etwas Nettes
zu kaufen. Jetzt fühle ich mich wieder frei und
fit. Seit ich mit dem Rauchen aufgehört habe,
erreiche ich bessere Ergebnisse im Schwimmen
und erkälte mich nicht so oft, weil der Hals mit
keinem Gift mehr in Berührung kommt. Das Essen schmeckt auch anders und ich genieße es
mehr. Suchtfrei kann ich jetzt von einem langen, gesunden Leben träumen.

Hauptsache, dass der Kopf richtig tickt. Eine
gesunde Seele ist die Voraussetzung für einen
gesunden Körper. Man muss also Stress vermeiden oder, falls das nicht gelingt, abschalten können oder sich irgendwie abreagieren.
Ich tanze in solchen Situationen oder gehe im
Park spazieren. Dabei begleitet mich mein dreijähriger Hund Max. Nach einem einstündigen
Spaziergang fühle ich mich wie neugeboren
und vergesse allen Kummer. Typisch für
Mädchen. Ich lege auch viel Wert auf meine Figur, deswegen mache ich täglich Morgengymnastik, trinke stilles Wasser und benutze viele
Körperpflegemittel, damit die Haut schön jung
und straff bleibt. Viele meiner Freundinnen
bewegen sich überhaupt nicht, haben Gewichtsprobleme und schon die ersten Hautfalten.
Für mich würde das in meinem Alter das Ende der Welt bedeuten.
Seit drei Wochen läuft in unseren Kinos der
österreichisch-deutsche Spielfilm „Die Fälscher”.
Für die Regie und das Drehbuch ist Stefan Ruzowitzky verantwortlich, die Hauptrollen spielen Karl Markovics, August Diehl und Devid
Striesow. Die Uraufführung des Filmes fand auf
der Berlinale 2007 statt und im Februar 2008
gewann der Film den Oscar in der Kategorie
„Bester fremdsprachiger Film”. Diese Tatsache
hat wahrscheinlich dazu beigetragen, dass die
Besucherzahl in Österreich von weniger als
60 000 Kinobesuchern vor März auf etwa 188 000
bis Ende August gestiegen ist. Der Film basiert
auf den Erinnerungen Adolf Burgers. Die Geschichte spielt hauptsächlich im KZ Sachsenhausen. Manche Häftlinge genießen hier ungeahnte Privilegien, weil sie an einem
Fälschungsprojekt teilnehmen. Ihre Aufgabe
ist es, ausländische Devisen zu fälschen. Viele
dieser Gefangenen müssen mit ihren Gewissensbissen zurechtkommen. Die Frage nach der
richtigen Entscheidung, welche Grenze man
überschreiten darf, um das eigene Leben zu retten, quält sie jeden Tag. Die Geschichte fesselt
die Zuschauer von der ersten Sekunde an, die
schauspielerische Leistung ist hervorragend,
ein Stück der bisher unbekannten deutschen
Geschichte wird wirklichkeitsgetreu dargestellt.
Der Spielfilm ist ab 12 Jahren freigegeben
und dauert 98 Minuten.
Tickets können im Internet oder telefonisch
bestellt werden und müssen dann eine halbe
Stunde vor der Aufführung an der Kinokasse
abgeholt werden. Auf Studenten wartet eine
50-prozentige Ermäßigung.

Ich bin eine sehr empfindliche Person und
oft fühle ich mich nicht wohl. Bei zu hohem
Luftdruck habe ich sofort einen Migräneanfall, wenn es zu heiß ist, falle ich in Ohnmacht,
bei niedrigen Temperaturen bin ich sofort
erkältet. Ich bin auch gegen Wespenstiche,
Schokolade und Nüsse allergisch. Ich muss
wirklich aufpassen, aus welchen Zutaten meine Mahlzeiten bestehen, denn sonst beginnt
mein Hals anzuschwellen und ich könnte ersticken. Ich habe immer ein Medikament dabei, das mir in einem solchen Fall mein Leben
rettet. All diese Faktoren verursachen, dass
ich mich an gewisse Regeln halten und immer
aufpassen muss. Deswegen missachte ich Personen, die bewusst ihre Gesundheit aufs Spiel
setzen, sich falsch ernähren, süchtig sind oder
mit ihrem Körper experimentieren. Ich meR
