Bunkeraninder theReinhardtstraße Reinhardtstraße Bunker Berlin-Mitte Berlin-Mitte The Bunker Reinhardtstraße, corner of Albrechtstraße built 1942 Contents Press Announcement List of Artists and Curators Location Organiser Partners Artists Curators Imprint Press Announcement Art and locality - symbiosis or confrontation? The festival confronts dynamism and stability at a historic location, the aboveground bunker in the Reinhardtstraße, Berlin-Mitte. Originally constructed as a reaction to military helplessness, the bunker today signifies for us nothing beyond its own dominant presence, the hulking, weighty nature of the building challenging the artists to invest its innards with a softening vitality. INSIDEOUT is conceived with the intention of bringing Berlin art face to face with artistic positions of other cities; the festival draws exemplary impulses from the important centres Prague, Berlin and New York. INSIDEOUT is the first step towards transformation of the bunker into an exhibition space for new art in an international context. Our goal is to recuperate these unusual rooms for a continual programme of activities. Owners of the building Nippon Development Corporation will after closure of the exhibition begin a complete restoration and conversion of the building. More detailed information can be found appended to this press release. The building which will host the festival, the above-ground bunker in the Reinhardtstraße, has survived to the present day wholly intact. Constructed as part of the "Führer's special programme" under the direction of Albert Speer at the beginning of the 1940's, the structure served during the Second World War as protection against air raids. The legendary Berlin techno club "Bunker" occupied the building between 1990 and 1995. Closed by the authorities in December 1995, it will now once again be open to the public as an exhibtion space for contemporary art. The current owner Nippon Development Corporation is determined in the longer term to convert the bunker into a venue for culture. The Organiser The aktions galerie as a forum for new art. The aktions galerie was founded in 1994 to initiate and support artistic and cultural work. Since then the gallery has been holding exhibitions at monthly intervals; it has also presented a great many performances, music, dance and film events. In 1999 the amount of available exhibition space was increased through the addition of two additional galleries focussing on Asian and eastern European art. The aktions galerie has from its inception provided a forum for young artists. In the context of its many co-operative ventures with other organisations, international projects have been a particular area of emphasis. Since June of 2001 the organisation has been headquartered at 20/21 Auguststraße where it runs the Galerie DNA. As a follow-up to a 1996 invitation of the Goethe Institute in Luxemburg, the aktions galerie organised Berlin's first two-week UNDABDIEPOST festival in February of 1997. This initial show was able to attract more than 15,000 guests in 10 days. Subsequent festivals reached international dimensions with a steady rise to a level of more than 30,000 visitors. In November of 2000, the aktions galerie showed UNDABDIEPOST upon invitation of the Goethe Institute at Hong Kong's Festival of Visions. Partners and Patrons Partners of the aktions galerie for the INSIDEOUT festival are the Embassy of the United States of America in Germany, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Germany, the Kulturamt Mitte in Berlin and the Förderband e.V..
